Zlin attack in Colombo and Mannar-Updated

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam Zlin 143 planes launched air attacks on Mannar and Colombo today. The Air Defence Systems are still active as we speak. Two gravity bombs have fallen near Kelanitissa thermal power plant damaging a cooling unit. A minor fire caused by the blast was subsequently put out by the Fire brigade.

An attack by Zlins on Thaladi camp in Mannar was reported prior to this attack. The blackout in Colombo was imposed only after this attack. The attack on Colombo commenced shortly after 11pm.

The Zlin 143 planes have escaped without damage. They are said to have come from an unknown location in Mannar and had avoided the SLAF radar at Vavuniya by flying very low, SLA Air Defence Unit told DefenceWire. Further details will follow.

The attack once again exposed serious defensive failures on the part of the SLAF. These defensive incapabilities were limited to the ground prior to Katunayake attack. However, with the emergence of TAF, the incapabilities extended to SLAF's own domain-- the airspace over the nation. Unlike the SLA and the SLN, SLAF has demonstrated it is incapable of fulfilling its role to the level expected.

Ninja,

This exactly what I was telling from morning, bro.

However, I don't think SLAF is bad, it is the management including the chief. The whole lot need a kick in the butt.

Usually, I dont like insulting our defence boys, after all they all do a great job. However, in this flying can thing SLAF is making me hide under tye table, bro.

See, f***ing tamils are laughing from their arse.

If LTTE terrorists can fly a Zlin repeatedly to Colombo and return, you can imagine how many flights are being made with seaplanes from the Wanni to the deep blue waters to replenish their depleted arsenal.

The bottom line is that SLAF is currently incapable of defending the country from these airborne threats. We need to recognize this and rectify the problem instead of playing the blame game. However, we should enforce accountability for not only the Air Force, but all government institutions.

hemantha & ninja,

SLAF MUST help this difficult journey.

for the info of anyone suspecting SLA advance, SLA has captured close to 10 villages in the past 10 days in kili!!!!!

anyone can dispute the death count, but no one has disputed these.

but there is no point trying to convince a section of the crowd. even after capturing the who area they will still say SLA failed to touch their hearts!!!!!!!!!!!

touch their clitoreses!!! lol!!!

one spirit very good point there.
There could be hidden runways in some of the south east asian countries.

They may not be able to bring too many arms this way. But it is a definite way to move important people in and out.

Even DW says SLAF has failed in their duty to fulfill whats required of them..
i wonder whether that's way too harsh...
we must not forget the fact that once an ultralight reached the whitehouse unchallenged and un-detected...
these low flying small targets are bloody hard to track...
SLAF is faced with a huge challenge even far superior countries have trouble dealing with so you really gotta analyze the situ properly before passing judgement...

though it's not said publicly... i'm pretty sure india is once again pulling gosl back from finishing ltte off.. lack of air strikes, ltte casualty numbers not being reported etc etc etc are quite obvious indications...

slaf vavuniya indra units failed to pick up yesterdays attackers... is it because the zlins flew below the ceiling or is it due to non-functioning equipment or anything of that sort???

Last time around katu radar tracked retreating planes that enabled F7's to zone in on the targets and take one out... why was that not the case this time??
how come even with a beechcraft airborne over north areas that we still missed the zlins?
have we been told to not use jets?

MD
i think it's foolish to rule out intercepting but the bigger need is better detection and tracking/monitoring equipment...
probably airborne warning systems like the present raytheon stuff we have...

Thanks for the information about Sri Lankan Jews [and it gave me some impression that you are also belonged to the same ethnic group].
I did a bit of analysis in response to Panhinda and Asithri regarding the roots [vague word] and expansion of Sinhala nation. I covered many ethnic groups whom migrated to SL during diff times and how they integrated with locals. I was with the opinion that there cant be any ethnic purity as many parties [eelamist, Sinhala chevenist etc] suggest. Migrant people got mixed with existing people who live in closer proximity and share few things [such as religion] in common, This integration denied all ethnic purities and created the composite versions what we see as main ethnic groups of today. I went thru many migrant races, castes and groups, but have missed the Chinese and Thai ppl [as stated by a friend of mine] and Jews.
In fact I never knew of them until I saw the research work of Fiona Kumari Campbell which you stated - nice to see another feather in our hat, and sort of unhappy that I didn’t know about them before. Does anyone know about any living evidence for their existence?
I really like the variety of SL population, and am very proud of us all. It is not a small tale that SL-Jew origin brothers and SL-Muslim origin brothers share the same patriotic opinion w/o a difference whereas Jews and Muslims outside SL might feel enemies in one another. It means that we all value SL above ethnicity. Notably, there is a huge amount of SL-tamil brothers who also share our opinion and recognize the menace of separatism as we do. And it gives a feeling that term SL is stronger than anything else.
What I don’t understand is why tamil diasporah misses this simple point and get deadlocked in some bullshit about ethnic purity, superiority and segregation. Maybe they are gospel-reading books like Ramayan, Mahavamsa and unable to comprehend the ground realities. Maybe they took wrong actions in 1983 and revenge feeling over-ride their sense. Their reluctance to accept that they took wrong action has taken its toll over them. Further they walk towards wrong direction, harder it is for them to come back. I’m sure that realization will fall upon their future generations, but as long as these rotten eggs are there, they will keep on emitting the poison, and continue executing the gradual genocide of their helpless wanni relatives.
Eliminating pussycats wont sort out this cancer. They will invent some other means of fulfilling their sadistic revenge feelings. There are few possible ends to their menace.
1. Local tamils fight against the diasporah slavery. They ignore the bullshit.
2. Reduction [NOTE: by means of migration, don’t worry SL wont kill them as they claim] of tamils into insignificant %
3. Demise of rotten egg generation. The next generation will take the eelam ideology like a parental religion. They will continue holding pongu tamil ritually like Christmas, but wont really have a way to convert it to the menace of their fore-fathers.
4. International laws: Note that availability of technology and arms has become such an issue all over the world and in next 100 years we will see strict methods of avoiding this happening. If not there will be a time, that ppl turn terrorists for any small injustice.

Meanwhile, cheers for the SL Unity against separation.

I am realy worry about our ground intelligence, why we cannot get the location of where they hide f***ing Zlins. If we have DPU, we should ask them to locate it without delay.

I don't like the idea of sneaking Zlins to Colombo and targeting important but vulnerable assets.

However, SLAF should start bombing along FDL on LTTE side to kill as many as possible, at least.

As some body pointed out 6000 sorties and 02 tigers for each 12000 dead tigers and dead tigers are good tigers.

I also read somewhere, Israel hiring academic think tanks to work on strategies. Though they are not military or defence experts, they have brains to develop strategies. I think SL should do that. Take a panal of 8-12 academic vizards and ask them to come up with solutions for a given problem. That type of panal can produce innovative ideas which can be implemented by military/defence experts.

However, the point is not that, we must force India to come up with steady stand.

"To be or not to be"

If the answer is to be they should give assurance that they will not interfere with war what ever happend in the battle front. If the answer is not to be forget about India and try everything without India.

Even if they invade us! I don't think they will go to that extent.

Troops capture Jayapuram
Troops of Task Force 01 have successfully gained total control over another LTTE stronghold, Jayapuram, located northeast of Nachchikuda in Kilinochchi district this morning, 29 October, following days long fighting, the latest report received from the battlefront said.

LTTE terrorists have strengthened their defences in Jayapuram built-up area and given stiff resistance on advancing troops towards Nachchikuda. As the security forces launched a multi-pronged offensive to encircling the LTTE's western coastal bastion, Nachchikuda, LTTE terrorists unable to the secure their main resistance point, Jayapuram, located East of the Mannar - Punaryn man road (A 32) road and 6Km northeast of Nachchikuda.

Troops now engaged in further consolidation operation in the area.

Clearly visible alarming points.

Preparedness and Recation time of SLAF.
( more drills guys, Do you know drills, mock attacks )

Inability to lock the radars
(Get a working Radar from a friendly country)

Indiscriminate shooting to air
( Corodinate coordinate )

Inability to identify the location of take off and landing. This is humiliating
( Can not we get some LRP on this and spys with big rewards ? )

Lack of stratergy
Why can not we have a bunch of small air crafts that matches the zlin calibre, We can take off from Galle face?

They didnt come from Mannar, they avoided the Radar by going over the sea for some distance to avoid the Indra, if it took of from Mannar it would have been noted. Not India, they havent brought the Zlins into Mullaithivu yet, I think they are comming from North of Kili on the Western coast. We need to detect them with more Radars, we need more of them, immagine running a radar from Vauvuniya and trying to detect a zling on the western coast, then the F7 or J7's as they call it can take them out. But the J7 is a training aircraft, they should procure those mig 29's or air crafts with Air to Air and Air to Groung combat capabilities. MI24's need to be preserved for the battlefield, they are on constant standby, thinking beyond the LTTE and into protecting Sri Lankan Air Space is essential.

Wijayapala, WELL SAID

“I would certainly take what they say any day over the MOD.”

“The problem with UTHR is not its reporting (which although not perfect is the best reporting available) but its politics. The UTHR as a matter of principle is anti-war, which is perfectly ok, but it errs in suggesting that the conflict can be solved through federalism, as if devolution will make the LTTE magically disappear.”

Past performance is almost always a good indicator of present behaviour, but people change for many reasons. Their mental, physical, psychological and emotional needs change. Organisations also change. One reason that they change are that they are made of people. These people have some similar needs. These needs may evolve.

While I personally take the UTHR’s word over MOD, I will be careful. I think it safe to believe that UTHR’s people are much more principled than our MOD people or politicians. Sometimes when we are so engrossed in a goal/Aim/ideal, it may transform us to the very opposite to what we expect from us because of the tunnel vision; we will begin to justify the means of achieving our end.

In the current UTHR bulletin (I admit that I just skimmed over it and did not have time to read it carefully.), it seems to suggest that a soldier did not know where he was. Was he brought there blindfolded or in a plane flying very high that he was not able to see landmarks. I have a question mark over this.

To finish this I would like to say this:

The cruellest thing about war is not life loss, property loss or heinous crimes against women and children. The cruellest thing about war is that some times it is unavoidable. The second cruellest thing about war is that both warring parties can claim this unavoidability of war as the motivation for war. The third worst thing about war is that it is not the just side which wins war. It is the mightier and wiser side that wins a war. Even it may be the most unscrupulous side which wins. That is why LTTE is using all the dirty tricks.

After the war, there is a lot more work to make it a just war. Even though I do not believe our politicians steadfastly stand on principles, for the sake of Tamil people I wish that LTTE will be annihilated. This is good for whole of Sri Lanka. I believe that if we had a Sinhalese equivalence of UTHR, we could have reached Tamil peoples hearts and minds more effectively. If the Buddhist clergy stood for Tamil people there would have been no Prabhakarans.

Just after the CFA many Sinhalese people were saying they would vote him for President. So if LTTE stood on principles that were just and fair it would have won more support.

Many say that Tamils grievances are more of perceived nature than real. At the moment of perceiving it, it becomes reality for them. I think Sinhalese people were thinking as Tamils being not so worthy. May be they think of us that way too.
But, it hurts since we are the majority.

As a Sinhalese who lived in Trincomalee, I was aware of this Sinhalese psyche. Racism and sexism is everywhere, in all of the countries. In Sri Lanka if we are against separatism and we want to live together then we need to respect them.

This psyche fo being superior, I think, has now changed. To demonstrate the existence of this mentality I will give an example. Even in this blog, when people want to insult LTTE, they use the word SAKKILI. Cleaning toilet is a job. In fact, it is an essential service. For instance, if garbage was not removed from our streets, then we will all get sick. I cannot say the same thing about professional sports. They stop their bogus profession. Nothing will happen to us. (Oh yea TV companies loose money. Some jobs will be lost. Economy will go down.) But if the toilets are not cleaned garbage is not removed, then the recession that comes with that is not generated by psychological factors but by real health problems. I respect and honour those people who provide us an essential service over any sport star. I remember a saying I heard many times in the South. “Marry a white woman. We can live with that. Marry a Tamil, then you loose us.”

Wijeyapala, I have a feeling that I know you! Is it so! I do not intend to make regular contributions. If I keep silent over comments of yours or others, please understand.

Hi Mate nice to have you back, but regarding this article and the writers view, I cannot agree. Here is “MY” report on what happened, which I have drafted in reply to his article and is written based on knowledge I have gained on the web and the wire. Please note that this is only my opinion

I don't think that anybody needs to quit his/her job over this small issue and I don't think that the TAF coming and dropping a couple of bombs, is something of a disgrace like he tells. Also he's wrong to say that the SLAF aircraft didn't attempt to intercept, because SLAF scrambled 3 aircraft immediately [4minutes] after the first "knowledge" of the planes, but all three aircraft had to return to base in a short time because they couldn't pick-up the Zlin's on their radars and were running short on fuel..

The Zlins flew extremely low over the ocean [thought to be about 1.5km out over the sea] and turned and headed into shore at Wattala, using the Colombo lighthouse as a guide beacon. Flew directly towards Kalanitissa, dropped bombs and headed back much the same way they came...Now, there are many factors as to why they were or could be successful...

1]. Flying over the ocean enables the pilots to fly below 200feet, where the radars cannot get them..
2]. The LTTE obviously knew that India pulled-out their Indra2 radar operatives to go home to their families for Diwali...and so, Indra2 was not functioning, or was partly functioning. [Should just sell that shit and buy the Chinese ground radar system]
3]. All Air strikes in Vanni had been called off since early October because of bad weather, but as they were called off, the SLAF decided to put the work-horse MI-24/35 to much needed and overdue service and maintenance. Also the MIG's are undergoing similar maintenance and services - Yesterday, after a long break the first SLAF sortie was carried out and a target close to the Parantan junction was engaged [LTTE website Tamil'nut' says the SLAF attack destroyed a school, but then they always say that]

The author talks of "Tin-can" and "Toy" planes, but actually the same tac-tic has been used long ago by the North Koreans against the US during the Korean war and the US was powerless to do anything about it...It was called then what it is called now, "BED CHECK CHARLEY" strategy. [I picked up this info on ‘defencewire’ and researched it - Google Bed check charlie]

[Quote - Ref:DefenceWire = nilavan said... ] They are using a 'Bed check Charlie' strategy successfully used in Korea by communist forces against the United States. Some of the 'aircraft' then were as old as the Polikarpov bi-planes dating from well before the second World War. The slow moving aircraft slipped under American radar, dropped a few bombs and flew away, leaving the much faster American F-86 Sabre jets helpless.

Similar tactics have also been used in other wars, including in the second world war and many separatist wars. [un-quote]

I think "OUR" forces are doing a terrific job and as for Mahinda in his "Lunkett", spending the night in the TempleTrees bunker, that’s okay because I hear “tiger uncle” is without lunkett and living full-time in the bunker under a fcuking “Ambaralla” tree.

I believe MR is the best leader we have ever had, at least in my lifetime. No white ass kissing fool like all the other kok-suckers we had before.

Jaya wewa!

Rereading this chaps article, it is like his just pissed-off because somebody spoilt his good nights sleep...No electricity, no fan, mosquito’s bite and he woke up this morning feeling shit…so, he took his morning crap in the paper…!

Hi Free Trade,

I do agree that if the TAF was flying 200 Meters over the sea then thats a Radar blindspot, but the fact is that a Zlin needs to take off from the ground within the northern territories, aswell as it would have hit above 4km at one time even during the trip to colombo, they are not stealth fighters just tin cans, if you understand the concept.

Reality is that there was no threat to the air by anyone that the only motive SLAF purchased jets was for ground targets, but in todays context we have threats from the air that are realistic.

Purchasing fixed ground radars is dangerous, they should be mobile, that is better, we need radars which have a larger range and we need do move away from dependancy of foreign resources controlling them.

Central Province is a bit of a long shot, say I take off from Devils Point or that Protruding peace of land, I would have to fly towards land comming into the radars view point, and then when comming close to the central province I would need to increase my altitude, that would stick like a sore thumb on the radar, 7 minutes for a F7 to be in the air, the LTTE would be risking one more of there remaining fleet of 4 Zlings, they are safe as long as they come through the sea, avoiding land.

putting SLN would be like turning ones ass to the TAF and saying kick me in the middle of the night with a few torpedos and no Surface to air combat ability.

A must read comment:
TAF's first use of air crafts was to sprinkle flowers over the cemeteries of the slain LTTE cadres in Mulliyawalai during the annual Heroes Day celebrations. Then they hovered over Palali firing rockets, attacked Katunayaka airbase, Palali again, Colombo on Cricket world cup night, Anuradhapura,Welioya, Trico Harbor, Vavuniya, and now they are back in Colombo giving us blackouts and trying to kill our President. They have improved, that's for sure. We, on the other hand, have a variety of birds and can't get them to at least put a hole in a Zling 143 (I've never seen pictures, smoke nor have heard explosions of SLAF's claim on shooting down TAF Zling143).

When are we going to get serious about our air space and defending it?

We have many MI24 variants, recently upgraded with/to intercept aircraft by adding radar, electronic warfare systems, FLIR, fully functional helmet mounted target tracking systems, and AAMs. These bird fly at 335 km/h (range is about 450 km) while Zlings fly at 266 km/h.

When we knew they came from Mannar, 20 minutes is ample time to get few of them MI 24's airborn to scan the skys.

Didn't the authorities sleep while we were up at night? President's life is way too important but he should value every citizen's life as if it was his own.

I'm so proud about our battle progresses that we gain on each day. I should thank the authorities and the administration for these, in the mean time we could have avoided what happened that night and take our defenses to new heights.

All we need is unity, alertness, a bit of common sense and to go the extra mile while carrying that "always smiles" smile.

Let's not fail again.

My special thanks to all our heroes of all forces who are in the front. My heart feels your strength. Dominate enemy territory and cut every throat. I know every one of you will be safe and pray for more strength.
Jaya Shri.

Thundering typhoooooons,

I was reading this blog and laughing to myself about the electronic war fair done on this blog by some people. Some are suggesting about traffic radar jamming systems. What a joke. And some paint which can absorb radar rays.

Read the below link on wikipedia to have little fair knowledge about aircraft radar jammers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radar_jamming_and_deception

And if you think you want more type AIRCRART RADAR JAMMING on Google/Yahoo/firefox, will get so many till next tin can attack.

lttp can buy some sort of radar jammers, they have enough money earned with drug/human trafficking/prostitution/arms smuggling etc etc.

But in the air its a differant story. They could use radar jammers but ground radars had the detection. These missiles are heat seeking missiles. These radar jammers some of you idiots talking about are active forward detection type. The distance of these are??????????.But F-7's, if at all, were airborne coming behind the tin cans.If you are talking about 360 degree coverage in air,you must have Airbone Early Warning systems (Aewac's) aircraft.

If you talk about paint. Many airforces in the world would go for that.Stealth not the paint.its all about avoidind radar re reflection back to the originator and avoid heat signature from your aircraft engine. Its far ahead for our intelligent die ass poras=lttp.
Some of these technologies you cannot buy at all.Especially when somebody not from legitimate forces, they will start suspecting.

Guys my conclusion is F-7 were not airborne, atleast on time. Now they say their F-7 couldn,t lock on these tin cans. This is basically to blame SLAF themself that day. What went wrong, they know it very well.
Talking about moles in the AF.Yes they work for lttp money.SLAF still couldn,t get rid off them from their valuable bases.

Anonymous said...

yap Saman

This is like the lame thing to do, if the air force had sent F7's up to hunt the Zlins it would have been released with the occurrence not 2 days later when the air forces credibility is brought into ?. So the Audit of the Air Force should be done, by a foreign air defense body who will not only look into moles but holes in the Air forces capability against all possible threats.

We cannot accept any attacks against innocent civiliens. It is in Sri Lanka or India. We must condemen such attacks.

I know that LTTE also involved similar attacks in Sri Lanka. We always requst them to avoid such attacks. They said sometimes it happen because of some reason (Ill explain the reason later if you want) but trying to minimize them.

Sri Lanka as a democratically elected governement also indicriminately attack civilians. You cannot say you missed the target. All pilots must check the locality and verify the location and pull the trigger.
