LTTE moving 130mm howitzers?

The Sri Lankan Army entered the village of Kiranchi yesterday after Tigers started withdrawing from the village in the face of the superior firepower of the 58 Division and the guile of the 2 Commando Regiment. A few Tiger units are still trapped inside the land mass at Devil's Point.

Kiranchi is the southern-most village at Devil's point, a strategic area for the LTTE for over two decades and often used as an area to observe movements at sea. The village was being infiltrated by 2 Commando along with Valaipadu and Palavi, as part of an overall strategy of making the areas west of the A-32 unsafe for LTTE, particularly after LTTE units withdrawing from Nachchikuda started moving towards Pooneryn and Devil's Point. By Friday, Tigers had almost completely withdrawn from Kiranchi. They are expected to completely abandon Devil's Point within the next few days.

58 Division troops are close to cutting off land-based escape routes for the trapped Tigers. 11 SLLI and 8GW troops operating ahead of 8th Mile Post on the A-32 are facing Chempiankundu Villu marshland from where they have around 3km to reach the Pooneryn-Paranthan road. The Tigers are expected to put up stiff resistance in this area.

If the road is captured, Tigers may start withdrawing from Pooneryn. Intelligence reports claim they have already moved 130mm howitzers from Pooeryn towards Paranthan along the Pooneryn-Paranthan road. If these reports are accurate, the threat to Jaffna has now been considerably reduced.

Tigers would have to recalculate their arti trajectory, acquire new targets and locations on GPS and DGPS and make new maps based on these calculations on latitudinal and longitudinal grids from areas south of Muhamalai and Kilali upto Elephant Pass or even Paranthan if they are to effectively defend against a southwards push by the 53 Division and the Mechanized Infantry. This could take weeks, even months.

For the Army, the push towards Pooneryn is a real investment for the future. If Pooneryn is captured, there is a serious possibility of the Navy operating a ferry between Sangupiddi Jetty in Pooneryn and Kerativu in Chavakachcheri. Not only will the government save money with such a move but the Army will save valuable deployment time by transporting troops by land to and from Jaffna.

Soldiers will be fresh when they get off in Jaffna or when they reach Mannar or Anuradhapura on leave. The Government may also build a bridge between the two points, which is nothing considering recent projects in the East and elsewhere including the new flyovers near Colombo and in the suburbs.

a couple of questions

a). Tigers have withdrawn from everywhere and now soon from Pooneryn. The numbers KIA are less, What would be the impact when they all converge in the Mullaitivu Jungles.

b)Tigers would have to recalculate their arti trajectory.....This could take weeks, even months. can you explain it a bit more. How do troops recalcultae arti trajec when they move FDL's forward.

3). iIf Pooneryn is captured.. why if? shouldn't it be when

thanks

perein,

the 53 and 55 Div commanders would have to make plans of crossing the several hundred meters of open terrain ahead of the Mohamalai, Kilali and NK defenceline as soon as aerial photos/satellite images and other recon tell them tigers are pulling back, but most importantly the arti and mortar points are being pulled back. I don't think they will break away from the FDL in great numbers like the last two times without proper calculations. Tiger trenches maybe un-manned or under-manned right now but there's still defence-in-depth further south. small arti correction teams can give locations of the troops to the 130s, 122s and 156s. This is why the 58's role is so crucial. LTTE's firepower assets are cattered all over the place in the Vnni, but still somewhat ready and focused in the north/jaffna. but th 58's move could break that focus forcing the tigers to take action to protect the assets. this is the time they will be most vulnerable. a lot can change as soon as 58 takes control of the paranthan-pooneryn road.

shan,

a)I think there's a difference between previous withdrawals and this. Earlier, LTTE used to coil itself and then suddenly recoil. for this to happen, they need a reserve. This is how charles anthony became a successful unit for the Tigers in the past. What we are now seeing is an altogether different LTTE, not because LTTE made mistakes but because Army has a better strategy. Army started eating into LTTE's under-trained units very early on thus forcing the Tigers to use their reserves. the reserves have suffered because of this. they cannot also concentrate on 6 divisions at the same time. So our guess is that, although a section of the reserves escape from pooneryn and kilinochchi towards mulaitivu, they will soon have to fight. fighting is limited to the capacity of your reserve and the supply of weapons and the integrity of your assets. with the northwestern coast regained, sri lanka navy will completely shot down the northeastern coast preventing supplies to the tigers. tigers are also no good in urban warfare. we saw this in the east, mannar etc. if you take a good look at the battle order map, you will see how 59 has already taken control of thick jungles and how TF-3 is heading towards oddusudan. this will limit the tigers to the northwestern half of mulaitivu. but the 55 division culd advance in them from the side along with the 53. all divisions in the northweastern coast could turn towards mulaitivu on the easterly direction after paranthan. this means 8 divisions marching on the remaining LTTE reserve. I would say that this is a very tall order for the Tigers. this is how we see the mulaitivu battle taking place.

-are we still using our close-in 81/82 mm mortars?

-what about recoilless-guns?.i have observed that these are not based on any platform, like a truck or jeep for support and stabilisation but instead just placed on the ground.

-have the new and refurbished Mi-35 hinds with night-capability sensors put into action or are we still using the existing mi-24's

Who knows, since the LTTE is hell-bent on stopping the 57 division from reaching Killi from the south, this might be the real intension of the SLA.

As we noted many weeks ago, the Sri Lanka Army will probably checkmate the LTTE’s Kilinochchi stronghold, not from the current operation by the 57 but from the operation working its way towards Paranthan from the northwest. Military tacticians have long realized that there’s more than one way to take Kilinochchi. Currently, the Tigers are using maximum force to hold down the 57 Division at Iranamadu, Akkarayan and Kokavil general areas. They cannot afford the 58 moving towards Paranthan from the Pooneryn-Paranthan road. This would make Muhamale and Kilinochchi untenable./
========

I dont see much in DW article other than going to Paranthan in the near future after clearing west of A32 and Pooneryn.

You suggested, instead of going to Pooneryn go to Pooneryn-Paranthan road aiming somewhere between Nallur and Periya Paranthan. That is the one I said too dangerous without clearing Pooneryn and west of A32.

SLA doing exactly as I predicted. Their final aim is Paranthan from the west, anybody can understand it easily.

Dr.Manmohan Singh
Hon’ble Prime - Minister
New Delhi

Date: Nov, 10 2008

Respected Prime Minister,

CPI State Secretary's letter to Indian PM
I am writing this letter to draw your attention to the latest developments in Sri Lanka.

All the political Parties in TamilNadu, demand in one voice to stop the war against the civilians in Sri Lanka, which is causing great concern in TamilNadu.

You are aware that the Ceasefire arrived at the initiative of the Norwegian govt’s representatives in 2002 had been unilaterally abrogated by the Sri Lankan govt in 2008, Feb. Many countries disapproved of this unilateral decision and requested the Sri Lankan govt to pursue the path of negotiation to arrive at a political settlement.

But the Sri Lankan govt. aggravated the situation by resorting to aerial bombing and also allround attack by the artillery. Lakhs of innocent people had been uprooted from their habitats and rendered homeless. Many innocent people were killed.

As their misery rose and their cries of sorrows also increased, the TamilNadu people of their own accord and instinctively reacted to the human tragedy and hence demanded an end to the war.

Any war however bitter it might be, should end one day as the first and second world wars have ended.

Hence, on behalf of the State Council of the CPI, I request you to use your good offices to impress upon the Sri Lankan President to stop the war and agree for a ceasefire.

One pertinent question was raised about the attitude of the LTTE, which is spearheading the Tamils movement, regarding such ceasefire efforts.

Hence, our party issued a public statement, requesting the fighting Tamil leadership in Sri Lanka, to spell out their stand, to ceasefire attempts, in unambiguous terms.

They have responded immediately in a positive manner. I am enclosing the statement of the LTTE’s Political advisor B.Nateson’s message.

Hence, as the assurance for ceasefire has been obtained from the LTTE, the Sri Lankan govt. must be persuaded to reciprocate positively for ending the war.

Delaying and dodging to resolve the ethnic conflict in SriLanka, will lead to fissiparous tendencies to grow in various parts of India.

As Indians, we feel, that the Sri Lankan ethnic conflict should he resolved amicably or else, the negative impact on India will have long term repercussions.

Hence, our party appeals to you, to treat it as important and act swiftly to end the war in SriLanka.

Yours sincerely,
D. Pandian

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SRI LANKA HEROIC ARMY AND BARBARIAN TAMIL TIGER TERRORIST

Army's human element saves teenage cadre's life
(By: Shanika Sriyananda)

She could have breathed her last in few minutes or would have been tucked with other dead bodies of her colleagues. Found among 17 dead bodies, she sustained serious injuries in the stomach and the left arm, yet had the luck to live, thanks to the keen eyes of a soldier, who is fighting a battle to liberate thousands of Tamils from the brutal clutches of LTTE.

The fighting escalated at 5.30 am, as the LTTE was still holding ground at the A 32 Road towards Pooneryn. An eight man team of the Delta Company of the 11th Sri Lanka Light Infantry at the Task Force 1, led by Captain Lalantha Kollurage was taking their maximum effort to capture the LTTE bunkers at Paddaruyal Villu between the 10th and 11th mile posts which is three and half km East of the Ponneryn - Mannar main road. After hours long heavy fighting using RPG attacks, the team managed to gain control of the location in the wee hours of November 1, killing 17 LTTE cadres.

While recovering dead bodies of the LTTE, soldiers found a female cadre left with serious injuries and heavily bleeding. The field medics gave her fist aid. After regaining consciousness she pleaded the soldiers to give her some water. Later she asked something to eat saying they were left without food for days. Honouring the moral values, the soldiers did not let her die and they treated her as one of their colleagues and was given saline. She was then brought to the nearest medical dressing station where she was treated.

This girl who was found lying unconsciously among the other dead bodies was in a trench. She was a cadre at the 'Yal-Selvam Paddai' and later attached to the 'Malathi' regiment. She was a resident at Mulankavil before being abducted by the LTTE. Trained in Jaffna, the 18 year old girl was brought down to Paddaruyal Villu from Muhamalai forcibly. She was blindfolded along-with few other female cadres and just dropped at the battle fronts and forced to fight with the advancing security forces.

The girl with her norm de guerilla 'Priya' was abducted by the LTTE few months ago and was given a crash training on weapon handling and basic battle training. Knowing nothing about the strength or the fighting capacity of the Security Forces, the teenage girls and boys were shown heroic pictures of the LTTE cadres and further misled by saying that the LTTE would confront any battle against the Security Forces. The young cadres were given an assurance that the LTTE would win the battle and they are on a winning path. The LTTE, in the verge of extinction is still continuing forcible child recruitment unabated also sowing seeds of hatred and separatism within the Wanni Tamil community who are denied all possible communication links to know the truth about the battle. The LTTE still maintains the human shield, according to information, and is using cruel punishments against those who try to flee the non-liberated areas. The outfit does not spare even 10 year olds and the sources said the LTTE terrorists are now abducting even small children for military fatigue while the other cadres are being sent to battle fronts.

According to the sources, the LTTE is using the tactic of deploying new recruits along the frontlines who were brought blindfolded with less acquaintance of the terrain and left with no other option except to fight for their survival against the advancing security forces. This tactic of the senior LTTE cadres using 'sacrifice of junior numbers' as an instrument to sustain their own demise, has brought much controversy triggering frustration and disgust among its grass-root ranks.

Priya had grenades and she did not bite the cyanide as she wanted to live. Priya's story will be the best example to show the difference between a professional army and a terrorist organisation.

During the Thoppigala operation, Sergeant K.G. Priyantha Pathirana was found with serious injuries and was taken by the LTTE as a POW. The LTTE terrorists, including female cadres, treated him in an inhumane way before his neck was cut while he was struggling for life. Later his head was displayed at the Illupadichenai junction. But, the fate of Priya turned a new leaf in her life and she will live to tell the difference.

The mission to rescue another 'human' at the battle front was a success due to immediate actions by the TF-1 troops and division Commander Brigadier Shavendra Silva. The teenager was given a new lease of life. It will be a show piece to tell the world that Sri Lanka is carrying a humanitarian operation and not a battle against those misled by the LTTE. Not only Priya but many LTTE carders who crossed to liberated areas with serious injuries, were given medical treatment alike the soldiers wounded in the battle fronts.

The highly disciplined soldiers carried Priya, more than a kilo meter from the point that they were fighting, simply to save a life of another human being. They did not disregard the international humanitarian laws and even the soldiers at the front lines are well aware about those values - not to kill even an enemy who is fighting for life.

Already, suffering from internal hemorrhage, Priya was carried by a stretcher to the nearest Medical Dressing Station (MDS) where she was given immediate treatment.

Then she was transported in an ambulance for over eight km to the main MDS where the military doctors of the TF-1 gave her treatment for the abdominal injuries.

Giving top priority, the teenage female cadre was airlifted to the Anuradhapura General Hospital for further treatment as she was badly injured. She was later transferred to the National Hospital - Colombo, for further treatments. Priya now awaits a new begin of freedom and life with the same 'foe' she was earlier forced to fight with. Destiny has pronounced well as Priya was saved and given a new hope of life by the same people whom she was taught (by LTTE) 'cruel' and 'aggressive' to her community.

He says that the gradual rise in death levels of his carders caused by global warming and the war means the eelam population may eventually be forced to resettle elsewhere.

The Eelam is the lowest nation in the world. Its area soon will be is little more than two square metres above sea level.

It's stupid to argue in this blog with inhuman blood hungry tamil tiger supporters. They like only to see blood and killings. This is the generation of ruthless killer pukabaharan. So best thing here (in this blog) not to disclose or publish vital info's. Instead publish real heroism of true defenders of our motherland.

Millions of tamils do not have their own land anywhere in this world. But thanks to killer pukabaharan they have spread all around the world and numbers in many countries. The day these racist will ask the parts in this major countries like Canada, France, Swiss, UK, Germany USA, Australia, Norway is not longer. They make maximum number of kids and when their people are major minority , then it will make fake history and say land belongs to them.

France took it's first lesson last days from tiger killer few days ago when French government banned the demonstration. This is clear example. Europe,Canada, USA and Australia get a good lesson from this racist tiger killers very soon. Then NO SORRY that time.

Why would it take the LTTE weeks to recalculate trajectory to hit a target? I spoke with a US Army guy from Op. Desert Storm who says it is a matter of minutes at most once the GPS coordinates for a target is known, to lob a shell. i am certain this type of software and technology is not all that hard to come by, and the LTTE should already have it. After all these guys have been using satellite technology for decades.

I'd assume that these guns could be used while on the move even.

gringo,

"Many analysts are surprised the Tigers have not unleashed more suicide bombings and unconventional attacks in the capital Colombo in response to being pressured up north... Reuters - C. Bryson Hull"

yes mate. this suck-kill-aiya is crying over it. soththi-pakaya-saravanamutta also cried over it some time back.

they don't know the reason. they think tigers out of INABILITY or SYMPATHY not carriying out these attacks.

the real reason is OUR TIT-FOR-TAT retaliations.

but tigers will TRY THEIR LUCK again and again. IF we are late in RETALIATING they will CONTINUE.

if you analyse all major terror attacks you can easily trace EACH OF THEM to a RETALIATION starting from the 25 APRIL 2006 attack.

retaliations are NOT knee jerk reactions as i say ALWAYS.

e.g. take the TIT-4-TAT on 25/4/2006. LTTE posisiotns AROUND civilian areas in tricvo was bombed by SLAF within hours of the terror attack. why trinco???? bcos by that time SLDFs had a plan to clear this area thereby splitting the east from the north. you know the rest about the east.

timing and/or the similarity (in some cases) was everything.

also the bus bombs recently had SIMILAR but MANY attacks in vanni. even ambulances were bombed!

when terror met terror, LTTE collapsed.

israel is VERY fluent in the ONLY LANGUAGE TERRORISTS understand. time to time HAMAS, JIHAD, AL AQSA, HEZBULLAH, etc., etc. try their luck by attacking israel, especially new developments/settlement.

EVERY part of the country is within terrorist KATYUSHA rockers, etc. BUT generally they DARE NOT attack israel.

why?

they also have an area to protect!!!! that is their weakness. we MUST exploit it.

whatever LTTE may boast, it has things, leaders, assets, an economy to protect. PLUS, these are MORE fragile than SL ones.

if SLAF, "DPU", etc. attack these, the damage would be ENORMOUS.

Moshe,

Sorry, mate,

That tele conf: took nearly 35 minutes.

Yes, I know that you are pissed-off, because LTTP moved howizers before we capture/destroy them.

Sooner or later it has to happen. Now they will position those in Paranthan or Periya Paranthen to use it against 53, 55, 58 and 57. However, 58 cannot do every thing at lightning speed, amte.

Those guns survived mainly because inaccuracy of SLAF, if we have to blame somebody, it has to be SLAF not 58. 58th division is the best fighting unit we have.

I know that DW is fond of 58 but they are good and bring results.

Even now, SLAF has many chances to take them out in Paranthan. They should try hard and get them before these guns do harm to advancing 58 along Pooneryn-Paranthan road.

Most of our casualties due to arti and mortar fire. It is shame we couldn't destroy them but you need to give some credit to LTTE becuase they are also making the best use of what they posses.

/"after Tigers started withdrawing..."

and they have moved 130 howitzers as well!!!

this is fcuking disappointing./

Well, this is not a surprise. If poonaryn is gonna fall then for what reason LTTP keep the heavy guns there, to gift to SLA. Of course they will move them.

If DPU can attack and destroy the heavy guns while they were located in poonaryn or while they move it that's great. But this will be fcuking difficult. (Forget about SLAF.)

/the chase away strategy is bound to fail./

Well, SLA's final objetive is annihilation. But LTTP will run for life after some point. They fought until they realise they can no longer resist.

/all these tigers should have been killed and their heavy guns destroyed in kiranchi, etc. there were no civilians./

I don't think they had heavy guns at Kiranchi. Mate, you can't kill all the tigers in Kiranchi as they will run for life. Point here is still they have land to run and hide. Thus to kill them SLA have to advance. That's what happeneing here and I see nothing wrong.

As you like if all the tigers get killed right there then SLA can just walk. But it won't happen.

/why did we chase them away with their machines???/

They simply moved them.

/totally unacceptable. SLDFs should replace chase away with harvesting and destroy LTTE capabilities than let them run with them./

Now here is the point. How long can LTTP run and hide while thier land is shrinking daily basis. After some point they will be boxed into the traingle of east of A9, north of A34 and sea/west of A35. Until then they can run with their guns unless they did some big mis-calculation.

/we should take LTTE's 4Ms (men, materials, machinery, methods) to end this. land, as you can see is not one of them. it is ONLY an enabler for taking away the 4Ms./

This is not clear. If you take off all their men still this will end and the rest can do nothing, right? What's the difference between materials and machinary? Land should be included here, I guess.

## I think right now LTTP main strategy is getting CFA; They need to get it before they loose poonaryn, K'chi, Paranthan, Muhamale, A9 etc. That's why they give heavy resistance sacrificing large number of cadres just to slow down sLA. Other wise I don't see any point sacrificing this many cadres (10,000+) for a loosing battle. LTTP also expect a lot from tamiznadu towards CFA.

Rana,

Put my name also to the pissed-off list due to DW report on moving 130mm Howitzers.

I can't figure out with air dominance how could this happen (same goes with LTTE's ability to build 20ft high earth bunds without being attacked).

My other concern is, if we can not block these how on earth we have a chance to capture the rats in the holes.

Can you please give me some clues, as to why this is the case.

Moshe Dyan said...

ninja,

mate, i force myself to think that you are joking!!!

in vaharei/thoppigala LTTE left MANY heavy guns (at least 2 152s, 1 MBRL). thats not the point. SLAF can have MANY opportunities to destroy them when on the move. these cannot be conclealed on the move.

annihilation GOT to be done when the opportunity exists. now these escapees are probably hiding inside the sarongs and sarees of civilians making it very difficult to annihilate them.

SLA approach (apart from SFs) is to chase away using a VERY high dose of fire power. it would be better if SLA has UAVs. again some fcuker was against SLA having UAVs.

tigers deploy informants but SLA cannot proportionately copy them.

NEVER postpone annihilation. the lower the number of hardcore terrorists in the mulaitivu jungles and in IDP camps, the better.

an escaped terrorist is like an escaped game hunt. bugger gets more and more experienced, angry and skilled in the NEXT battle.

T Storm,

Who said 53 and 55 can bypass EP and come down to Paranthan?

They can't unless they fly over EP. If they want they can come down to Pooneryn once it is cleared through the laggon using a ferry. Then we are weakening our position in Muhamalei, Kilali and Nagar Kovil.

No they will fight and come down as soon as situ is right. As DW said they will come down as small units, in slow motion to avoid debacle similar to earlier attempts.

After 25 years of back and forth, I never imagined that I would see the day the SLA would make it to the fringes of the Jaffna peninsular.
Due to a unique combination of political will, military leadership, and high morale of the soldiers, SLA is in the process of comprehensively defeating the LTTE.

Vakarei/ Thoppigala we found heavy guns becuz LTTP had no place to move them. (They did it from Sampur to Vakarei.)

Best way for annihilation is convince them they have some thing to defend. I guess, SLA used this principle and its working. In this way SLA better make them die in K'chi while fighting for weeks without taking it. However, time is a constraint. And SLDF need to balance war strategy with politics/ economy/ indian election and many more things we don't like. Thus I think thing are going on according to an overall plan.

We are still 4km off from Pooneryn-Paranthan road. Inbetween most difficult marshy terrain. You asking 58 to fly and stop heavy machinery and heavy guns from moving.

SLA is accomplishing things in the best way they can.

As Ninja say's if we have a matching air force there is no problem, we can destroy them even if they move it.

Problem is SLAF.

I also heard that LTTE casualties are very high, military is not giving the details for obvious reasons. It is also reported that military casualties are low and only few casualties are brought to the Anuradhapura hospital compared to those days. This is mainly because the 58th Division is advancing at a very high phase and LTTE is left with no time to place mines and booby traps.

I agree with you bro...

Saman/Moshey, let's not get ourselves in a twist at this moment bros...no compelling reason for it in my view.

The 130mm howz may have been moved under the cover of darkness and under intense armed escort by the LTTE (and this is where I too agree that SLAF must be the more vigilant party…and as Rana said, we don't quite expect SLA to fly 4km and set ambush to stop this kind of lethally protected maneuver)...but the word I got today from "Colombo" was that yes, although this is not something that we would like to see, in the end-game, no, actually it is NO FCUKING BIG DEAL!!!

The reason?

Intel has it that LTTE is acutely short of ammo for these “big-guns” and the only hope for replenishment was via TN...and this is why the SLA has been determined to seal off the west-coast (where LTTE got 95% of its supplies once the "floating warehouses" were sunk)...

So, yes, the whore-bastards/bitches may have the 130mm howz or even the 152mm artys in Mulativu, but what good would they be without ammo?

Instead of sacrificing a substantial number of our bravehearts to charge foolishly ahead and try to capture these guns, clearly the strategy has been to seal the west-coast and make these guns go numb from lack of ammo...quite like how a paper stapler is useless without staples or the analogy that I prefer, how useful a dick is to an impotent! LMSSAO!!!

So, rest easy patriots...do not let your blood boil...there are some nifty brains on our side in the execution of this war, and by and large, we can all agree that their strategies have paid hefty dividends to-date...right?

DW, good one about betting on horses. Reading the terrorist-supporter losers comments I keep thinking of the expression 'clutching at straws'.
Having realised the end is nigh for the LTTE if the war continues, Navindran is hoping for the Sri Lankan economy to collapse. The other monkeys haven't realised even that yet (thama mole padila nehe), and are still waiting for the miracle counter-attack.
It is very entertaining now to read their pathetic posts.

Moshe, Katti,

News on Maldives’s new president’s intention to buy land for Moldavians is an intriguing thought. I wish, if we had such far sighted leaders. Never heard before and in fact a reality they have to face. Good on him. I feel most costal areas of SL will go under water as well.

Some evidence that initial settlers of these fishiing islets were Sri Lankans (sinhalese) as they wer part of "hela bima". In fact we would have annexed those in 1948 when Brithish left if we were interested.

These thousand odd islands are very strategic to us as well. If we are not interested, India would be.

Why?

Remember some where in 1989 or so Uma Maheshwaren took some islands. Then India intervenes and bailed out Maldives. At that time I was in SL and in the thick of the things. Speculation was that it was an RAW plot. Apparently, until that time Abdul Gayum (educated in St. Thomas, ML) used to come to SL for every thing. In fact their major banks were Bank of Ceylon and Peoples Bank. Maldives used foreign missions in Colombo. Around the same period, it was also reported, based on a tip (no one knows who did that) to customs, our customs detained a Maldevian. Only a week after and few harresments, the detainee was Abdul Gayum (president at the time) was on his regular private visits to SL. This was a major diplomatic blunder. Also, media reported that, soon after that, Indian National Bank signed-up as the major bank of Maldives as well as Deli based foreign missins took over.

You may laugh your heads off if I say Maldives islands were part of “Hela Bima” long time ago and part of Sri Lanka. They talk Hala basa (Kumarathunga Munidasa’s) is still well preserved there although pronounce/sound as Arabic. Few examples,

- their language is called Divehi Bas
- Wathura tikak – pan podak (pronounce as fan fhodak)
- Names of islans “hikaduwa”, “dodanduwa”

We do not have land to few other Mother lands – but we must be smart enough not to walk out from the discussions, if that ever comes to that.

Katch said...

Anybody has any news on the Mankulam front? Wonder how the new task force is doing?
Defencewire?

Moshe Dyan said...

saman,

all that is fine mate. but look at the reality.

1. their language will NOT be preserved in SL better than in india. in SL they will become sinhala or tamil in language.

2. they can seriously affect the population (by 1.5%) which is highly detrimental to this tiny country with a MASSIVE population density. if 300,000 hit one district, then there are other problems too. if 300,000 are divided into many districts, then their identity will be lost.

3. in india they will have much more economic and religious opportunities than SL.

4. as you said correctly india is already in it in a big way. so let them take the baby.

5. in SL indian labourers didn't create trouble. but when the TOTAL number of tamils increased, that led to trouble. had the british brought in hindi speaking ppl instead, things would not be so bad. going by the same token, an artificial increase of a group can cause a lot of problems.

6. but SL should have a selective migration process where wealthy/qualified INDIVIDUALS and their family members can migrate (from the maldives).

an outright mass movement - NO.

Saman said...

Moshe,

I agree. I was not suggesting at all we must buy in to that. Especially, I dont think we should "sell" even a sq. inch of our country to any one (not even to the Queen).
I don't think Indians would ever allow selling their land for Maldivians either.

The point is, strategically,we can not afford to ignore or walk away from these facts.

But there are different ways to skin a cat.

Moshe,

Brother, I agree with you 100%. Wijayapala is the most able guy from the long list. If you have seen my earlier posts about a week ago, even Ninja or Saman laughed at me when I said "Wijayapala is the most moderate tiger lover or something". Moderate means, difficult to catch or difficult to expose to see what lies underneath.

However, he cannot do any harm to us, as long as we keep the unity within the camp and concentrate on attack defensive strategies.

On this Maldive thing, we need some time to digest whole issue. We should not jump the gun prematuerly. If we can allow that in controlled manner, we may gain economically from the move. After all all developed countries do that, they invite educated, wealthy and talented guys to come and reside in their countries to use them to raise their bar along with status.

Katch said...

Now now Bhahirav,

Mood swings are not the sole preserve of any particular race! People from all races can have mood swings!

BTW, I just watched a YuoTube link from Lanakweb. I felt nauseous just watching it. It showed what the Dhalits of India have to do for the so-called high-castes. They are angry! Looks like your brothers in TN will have their hands full soon. The Dhalit cause is the true cause in South Asia brother. We should all be putting pressure on India to enforce the law to liberate the Dhalits. I can see now that you guys really thought that we were Dhalits didn't you? Well, even the animals of 1983 could be considered kind in comparison to what the Dhalit anger could do to your supporters in TN.

Wijepala,

regarding "Sanghams"; agreed that sanghams refer in general to what we would call samithi. But the word Sangha has to be the root of it IMHO. Sangha did not exist prior to the Buddha or Maha Veera as far as I know. There is considerable doubt as to existence of Sangham culture prior to some way through the 1st millennium CE. So I would postulate that what is called "Tamil Sanghams" today did not exist at all. I would really like to see words that refer to "Tamil Sanghams" in ancient records. I don't think there is such records.

BTW, I don't know your history but you seem to have really pissed off some of the brothers here. You and Moshe appear to have an ongoing feud.
I don't want to get in between but may be it was a mistake to use the word "Modaya" in anger. After all that is what the "Tamil"cousins with their "othering" mindset use. If you are gonna call a brother "nigger" then do so with good humour. (e.g. Yo Moshe, how are you nigger!) and not in anger (e.g. Moshe you f#@ing modaya!).

I for one am not convinced that you are an LTTE mole at this stage. Neither am I a complete fool. I know that people can hide their identities and one has to consider all theories as plausible in a war.

Rana said...

I see the typical lankan mentality in these modayas likes of Moshy, rana and few others, who often depend on their patriotic bandwagon to support their views.

If you analysis the evolution of moshy on this blog, you will find out how rapidly these folks can change. Moshy started as statistician who relatively maintained the moderate views early, but it was short lived once his fellow modayas started to appreciate his garbage statistical models that put him in strong position to look for more popularity here, then come sudden rise of another born filthy scumbag,Assithri, who really made an influence on Moshy who finally decided to jump into filth game with hawkish and racist mix in order to gain more popularity among these modayas. His low point of DW stay was that he jumped into WP who infact is not a pro-Tamil but moshy stamped him as LTTE supporter to get advantage on him, unfortunately most of the Sinhalese are modayas, so these modayas believed what moshy said about WP.

Simply you can put Moshy's evolution in 3 phases, of them, first was bitch, second was slut, now whore.

What makes even funny here is that rana juvenile found out after moshy's comment that WP is pro-Tamil...ha ha ha..what a bunch of modayas. I still have in LTTE bcoz of these modayas.

SCENARIOS - Where is Sri Lanka's war heading?

C. Bryson Hull
Sri Lanka's government on Monday rejected a reiterated Tamil Tiger offer of a cease-fire out of hand, saying surrender or defeat are the only options left now for their opponents in a 25-year-old war. Skip related content
Analysts say the military is making gains and has the unflinching support of President Mahinda Rajapaksa in its mission to wipe out one the world's most ruthless and effective insurgent groups. Here are some scenarios of what could happen next:

FLANKING THE TIGERS: The military for the last month has said it was on the edge of the rebel capital of Kilinochchi, 330 km (205 miles) north of the capital Colombo. The fighting is heavy at several points encircling the town, and the rebels appear to be dug in well behind a maze of trenches and defences. But while the world's focus has been on that target -- the capture of which would provide a strategic advantage and a morale boost for the military -- soldiers have battled hard up the northwestern coast. Troops broke through Nachikkudah, a base for the rebel "Sea Tiger" naval units, a few weeks ago after more than a month of sustained, bloody combat. That cleared the way for soldiers to sweep rebels out of the Devil's Point area north of Nachikkudah while simultaneously heading for Pooneryn.

TAKING POONERYN: The Defence Ministry on Monday said soldiers were crossing the marshes south of Pooneryn, advancing on that strategic spit of land. Tiger artillery batteries there have kept soldiers garrisoned on the Jaffna Peninsula from crossing south towards Kilinochchi. Seizing Pooneryn would open up the A32 road that follows the northwest coast and give the army control of nearly all of the main north-south A9 road to Jaffna. Mechanised units in Jaffna would be free to move south. Kilinochchi would be encircled on three sides.

TIGERS HEAD EAST: With Kilinochchi under pressure, defence analysts say the Tigers have moved more battle-hardened troops there to defend it. But if the army takes Kilinochchi, the rebels would be forced into the jungle -- to which they are accustomed -- and to move east towards the port of Mullaitivu they still control. The army is advancing towards Mullaitivu from the south and southwest with nearly three full divisions and two weeks ago deployed Task Force III -- a new unit shy of division strength -- to fight east along the A34 road that terminates in Mullaitivu.

KILINOCHCHI FALLS: If that happens, analysts and market players say they expect a brief boost to the Colombo Stock Exchange and maybe some temporary relief to depreciation pressure on the rupee. But both tend to move on their own fundamentals after decades of war. Neither are looking good now amid a global financial crisis and an IMF warning that Sri Lanka's economic growth could be at risk if the country doesn't cut spending, stop supporting the rupee and ease reliance on expensive foreign short-term debt.

COUNTERATTACK: The Tigers could do what they have done after losing ground in the 1980s and 1990s, which is regroup and come back hard. But security analysts say the army is three times bigger and much more hardened than it was in the those days, with better weapons and tactics -- especially its use of small commando units for counterinsurgency and intelligence gathering. Anti-terrorism laws have also hit the Tigers' weapon supply, as has the sinking of much of its merchant smuggling fleet by the Sri Lankan navy, with foreign help.

COLOMBO ATTACKS SPIKE: Many analysts are surprised the Tigers have not unleashed more suicide bombings and unconventional attacks in the capital Colombo in response to being pressured up north. Their rudimentary air force of small civilian planes converted for guerrilla use bombed a power station in Colombo on October 28, and there have been at least seven blasts in the city since August 30. But the city is under heavy security and the government has no compunction about carrying out heavy-handed sweeps of Tamil areas to avert future attacks.

Whether or not the actual "Sangams" existed (it's hard to say because India in general did not have written historical traditions as in SL), the Sangam literature was written and preserved to the modern date. I think you missed my point that there isn't anything in the Sangam literature that would support the notion of a separate Tamil Eelam in ancient times.

"BTW, I don't know your history but you seem to have really pissed off some of the brothers here. You and Moshe appear to have an ongoing feud."

It started a few months ago when I called Moshe a "modaya" for referring to Anandasangaree as a "cunning bastard" (recently upgraded to "fcuking bastard") Perhaps I should've used a different term but I would not retract what I said. Sangaree gets enough crap from the LTTE supporters that anyone who is truly anti-LTTE could never tolerate any rubbish piled onto him by pseudo-patriots like Mushe.

"If you are gonna call a brother "nigger" then do so with good humour. (e.g. Yo Moshe, how are you nigger!) and not in anger (e.g. Moshe you f#@ing modaya!)."

No, Mushe is definitely a "f#@ing modaya" and I have to call it as it is. Any dimwit who insults one of the few Tamils who has the balls to stand up to the LTTE is not my "brother," no matter how "patriotic" he believes himself to be. Cyril Mathew called himself a patriot and look at the mess he got Sri Lanka into in 1983.

"I know that people can hide their identities and one has to consider all theories as plausible in a war."

The fact remains that the outcome of the war in SL will not be determined by what some bloggers here think. The MOD has ignored all of Mushe's ranting emails, while posting Anandasangaree's statements on army.lk and defence.lk. All of pete and shart's whining here does not and will not change the fact that the "modayas" and "chena boys" are pounding their asses in the Wanni.

Just as Mushe mislabeled me as LTTE supporter, you have mislabeled me as not being pro-Tamil. I see myself as equally pro-Tamil as pro-Sinhala. In fact, anyone who is pro-LTTE is contributing to the destruction of the Tamils in Sri Lanka and can never be "pro-Tamil."

Interesting post by DW.

Evaluating the past six weeks it is clear that the GOSL cannot but suppress the high SLA casualties. In a round about way, I think that is good—it is sign of a democracy at work despite this horrible war. Clearly, civilians are affected by the news of their KIA loved ones, and they might develop war fatigue. In times of such dire national security concerns, democracies have to make the bitter news less so.

I am often surprised by the cavalier manner of the expectations that the LTTE will be defeated overnight. Even 500 hardcore fighters can cause much pain to an advancing army. The current estimate of 5000 fighters should give pause any such optimism.

LEFT HOOK

The Left Hook of the SLA through Mannar to Killinochchi was in retrospect brilliant. The LTTE expected the SLA to fight their way through the Jaffna-Vavuniya axis and the SLA simply out witted them when the move began from Mannar up the coast.

Even with the left hook, it was disguised. When the SLA moved up the Western coast it seemed that Pooneryn was the object. (That was my preference too, given the need to remove the LTTE heavy guns that were making the Mahamulai-Kilai front costly for the SLA and the need to connect Jaffna to Colombo via a land route.)

With the LTTE hardening the Nachichikuda area to slow down the advance North, the Left Hook to Killinochchi was brilliantly executed leaving the SLA within 20 km of the LTTE “capital”. The loss of political prestige that this caused the LTTE cannot be underestimated. It has led to a shift in thinking abroad that the LTTE is finished as a conventional fighting force, and thus any forced route to independence is done and over with.

POLITICS OF WAR

Also useful in this exercise—in political terms—has been the destruction of the myth about military action against a non-state actor. Given the mythical status of the LTTE, its losses reverberate much further, all the way to the Department of Defence in the US. In the coming months, the US will redeploy to Afghanistan. They will come in not with the heavy fighting force necessarily, but with a politico-military strategy directly from the SLA-LTTE war.

What the DoD has learned from the LTTE reversal is the need for the Karuna factor and the use of small teams. Both are now in evidence in the strategy unveiled by the new US commander. It is no coincidence that the US Pacific Fleet commander is backing the SLA efforts.

For the US there is another longer term concern: preventing the GOSL from getting any closer to China. The Indo-US consensus this is encouraging for the Rajapakse government, who now need to rein in their Chinese sentiments somewhat and reciprocate Indian concerns vis-à-vis Tamilnadu, by being visibly interested in saving innocent Thamil lives, especially the human shields being used by the LTTE.

Rather than a cease fire, I therefore hope the war will slow down with the objectives of the Killinochchi and Pooneryn achieved. From then on, the GOSL should focus on LRRP missions to decapitate and destabilize the LTTE’s hold on the population. As part of this civilian focused war, the GOSL should attempt to use the offices of the international community to force the LTTE to allow IDPs to return to their vacated homes. Separating the LTTE from the people is not an easy task, but it must be done, and this is the best time to make a start. That being said, the usual caveats must be noted: there has to be a systematic screening of IDPS to determine which ones are LTTE and which ones not--science can come to help here.

I noticed the rancour in these pages. I can understand the GOSL vs. LTTE variation, which is inevitable, even if is unfortunate. But, the quality of debate between Sri Lanka sovereignty supporters can also get rather poor, as it seems many Sri Lankans are sniping at each other. That is too bad.

For example Moshe Dyan and Wijepala both offer good analysis, and should bury the hatchet. I like Wijepala’s contributions to in terms of their political sophistication, even though in such a forum it is wasted. He should be writing in one of the major Sri Lankan newspapers encouraging ethnic harmony and the need for the GOSL to treat Thamils with even greater respect than is afforded now. Moshe is a tactical guy, and not a political guy, so to take him in this forum is not useful.

In the context of the latest exchange, I must say that Mr. Anandasangree is cunning, as Moshe put in no uncertain term. Anandasangaree is a ‘soft separatist’ as I term him in the Lanka Academic site, where I have an open letter to him (of course he will never reply!). The soft separatists are long term Eelamists. Their strategy is first N+E for devolution using India, then separatism.

I hope Moshe and Wijeyapala can stand down and refocus their abundant energies on other matters.
