BREAKING NEWS

The Sri Lanka Army is within 700m of Paranthan junction. Paranthan junction is expected to fall within the next 24-72 hours.

The LTTE's hold on the strategic Paranthan junction along the A9 is failing rapidly as 58 spearheaded by 2 Commando came upto 700m of the A-9 north of Paranthan junction this evening.

Meanwhile Tiger strength in Kilinochchi too is gradually being eased as cadres are being pulled back towards Mulaitivu. The Tigers new objective of protecting Mulaitivu is surprising as it reinforces Mullayaveli. It seems as if the LTTE is running out of time and ideas on which area to protect.

Pottu,

Ceaseless wave is replacing fallen cadres regularly and launching non stop attackes. The idea is to demoralise opponents and make them retreat.

You cannot do that with present SLDF as their moral is high and numbers are greater.

Another important thing is LTTP is now heavily depends on inexperienced cadres whom are low in self steme and determination.

Their only strength at present is not having an alternative other than fight as senior cadres watching them from behind.

Vesapille has the experience of 30 years using others for his survivel.

Downfall of LTTP can be accelerated by guarding fuel supply into Wanni. They must be getting fuel from southsomehow despite all security checks.

LTTE open for peace talks - Nadesan

LTTE are open to restarting peace talks with the government, despite the continuing military offensive aimed at crushing the group, LTTE political chief Balasingham Nadesan told The Associated Press.

Nadesan told The Associated Press the rebels did not believe they were facing imminent defeat.

"We have made several strategic withdrawals in order to save the lives of our people and maintain the strength of our forces. When the time and place is conducive, we will regain the land we have lost," he said in an e-mail sent to the AP late Tuesday.

Nadesan also added that the rebels had not abandoned hopes for new peace talks.

"We have always been ready for peace talks, but the Sri Lankan government has been always insisting on a military solution," he said.

I think LTTE should keep sending their dogs to Killi.

Cos remember that just capturing Killi is not what we want cos Killi is just another jungle for us but killing enough terroists is the key.

I think its important that we show LTTE that we like to gain control of Killi so LTTE will send more cardres. But guys we all know that the SLA is only on a humanitarian effort :)

We should make them feel they r also a part of this country and they have the freedom to grow and prosper so that they will never take arms again....

Tiger Hunting!
Parnanthan is just another town, not the end of the war. There may be over 5000 battled hardened cadres still left in this triangle. SLA focus more on hunting than capturing land and keep the casualties to minimum. Now the cream of the LTTE fighting force is in the front. Even the black tigers are open ducks. This is the opportunity to exterminate the enemy. When the enemy is gone (gone baby gone!~) land will fall. Current hunting rate is above 20 per day. Unfortunately, our rate is also higher than anticipated. Further, capturing more land will spread the troops density and making them vulnerable to attacks. With Monsoon is almost over, there is no hurry! BTW, our snipers are doing their best these days, last week alone they have got over 40 targets. Yesterday 6 more. This is the way to go!! One by one, we give you Eelam the hell!

Pre-History
Just to add few things to the history discussions here. Sri Lanka was a well civilized country much more earlier than Vijaya and even before India!

Oldest human remains discovered in Lanka (Ambalanthota) are belived to be from 123,000 BC. Humans living amongst huge lions, Hippos and Rhinos, native Lankan is stronger and taller than many Lankans today. He had large jaws, large teeth, and large foreheads. They practice the Mahasona (Yaksa) belief.

Anthropologists say that the skeletal remains of man found in the Balangoda caves are over 28,000 years old and that the skeletal remains of the Buttala man may be twice that old. Therefore the possibility of the existence of several highly advance civilizations such as the Tharaka, Mahabali and Ravana in this island may not be just legendary.

Ancient statues sculptured in stone of King Ravana, have several heads on one body. He wears a crown on each head. It is impossible to believe that King Ravana had several heads. It is more likely that the crowned heads is an indication that he did reign over several countries from Lankapura, the then capital city in Heladiva. Legendary. King Ravana is reputed to be from the Yakkha clan and there is a school of thought that this island first known as Heladiva was later (900 BC) known as Sivuhela as four clans or tribes of Hela people were its inhabitants. The four were Yakkha, Raksha, Naga and Deva (Asura) tribes, who already had their own alphabet, have started trade with the outside world. Their largest town was 26-acres. Lanka’s fertile soil, availability of water, Iron technology, mineral resources & pearl fishing come to the attention of many business people from Asia & middle East. (Among them are South Indians, Persians, and Greeks).

Vijaya and his band of invaders from the Sinhabahu clan blended with the people of Sivuhela and the country was subsequently referred to as the Sinhela. A legendary belief is that this Sinhabahu clan originated from a man whose father was a lion and mother was a human. Science has proven beyond reasonable doubt that such a union is genetically impossible. It is therefore logical to infer that this clan may have originated from a man who behaved like a lion, the king of beasts.

The offspring of this lion and human union was named Sinhabahu. Sinhabahu killed his own lion father with a bow and arrow and was crowned king by the Vengas after the demise of their king who was Sinhabahu's grandfather from the maternal side. He left his kingdom with his own sister Sinhasivali whom he married subsequently and built a new city by the name of Sinhapura. The eldest of his sons was Prince Vijaya. He was of evil conduct and his followers were no better. They committed many intolerable deeds of violence. The people demanded the king to kill his own son Vijaya. Instead King Sinhabahu banished Vijaya and seven hundred of his followers with half of their heads shaven from Sinhapura. The ship in which they were banished from Sinhapura sailed the Indian Ocean and arrived at the harbour of Thambapanni in Sivuhela. Prince Vijaya befriended a Yakkhini Princess and with her help defeated the Yakkha army and himself adorned the garments of the Yakkha king. He made Kuvanna the Yakkhini Princess his mistress but after she gave birth to a son and daughter through him betrayed her and was to take the daughter of the King of Madhura as his queen. This is the first recorded betrayal in our history!

However it is still premature for any one to dwell on deadlines set by media who describes minor information, elaborately to attract an audience, as I have always maintained the reality only shared between SLDF and Tigers.
From what I have read in many of the blogs and forums I have observed that Tamil participants by default believe that their fighters are self healing and as mentioned by one of the bloggers, Mavaeerar cemeteries are there to bury Eelam dogs and cows who perished in many thousands.
This conflict has been a good learning process for most Sri Lankan politicians and her citizens. For Sri Lankan Tamil the process of this Fake Struggle had been very costly in terms of their future. A curse put upon them by bunch of under educated Tamils who explored uneducated Tamils.
This war is coming to an end with huge costs for surviving citizens and to the country. At least the time has come to compromise to forget the past and build the country for the next generations in Sri Lanka. But I doubt very much until Tamils adapt to the surroundings by giving up their tribal beliefs.
Thanks to a very skilled SLDF Commanders appointed by a strong President with a weak opposition party run by a puppet, seeing through to the Eelam Tamil Terror Elimination process successfully to protect every citizen of Sri Lanka.

[The biggest problem is really not making the crafts fly/control but 1)getting real-time transmission of data back to base 2) controlling over larger distances and 3)securing the control transmission (if the control transmission can be disrupted, the LTTE will make them fall out of the sky, or acquire the craft themselves).

If these can be figured out, we are pretty much there. But these are not simple problems to figure out, or LTTE would have built their own UAVs by now.]

Actually, items 1 & 2 are not difficult to do. Item 3, related to transmission security, resistance to jamming, and redundancy of the signal is usually solved by encryption and spread-spectrum channel-hopping technologies, some of which are employed in cell phones within the telecommunications frequency bands. In addition, helmets with built-in audio-visual displays and video-game-like stick controls can be used for more intuitive control of the UAVs by the controllers.

All of these craft can be equipped with explosive self-destruct charges that can be remotely or automatically activated such as upon the receipt of a command signal, or upon unauthorized tampering. Fake spoofing command signals that try to take over the craft can also be recognized and rejected with command ID strings.

I don't know why the LTTE has not developed their own UAVs, but they certainly could have; there are no insuperable difficulties. They could have bought UAVs, and at the least used simple r/c controlled craft for audio-visual imaging of the battlefield.

These is information well known in the industry and open literature. I can't reveal more that in this public forum.

That's right. And when the LTTE makes a decision and starts acting on it, the SLA takes a new tack, and LTTE has to change plans and cadre dispositions all over again.
All the time, we keep reducing the enemy and closing the net.

[Thanks to a very skilled SLDF Commanders appointed by a strong President]

A strong President and a National Govt are essential for the future survival of Sri Lanka as one nation.

Therefore, it is critical for the safety of our country that the central government of Sri Lanka is by far the dominant power in the country, and the only one with control over the police, and the armed forces. No entity, other than the GOSL, should be endowed with the power to negotiate with foreign powers of behalf of Sri Lankan people.

Large Provincial Councils are a danger to the integrity of the country, because they are large administrative units compared to Sri Lanka as a whole, and can band together on some basis (ethnicity, ideology, party politics, egos of powerful leaders) to form powerful alliances that can threaten the elected National Govt and lead to disintegration of the country.

There are many examples of this in the history of our country, in addition to the Eelam threat, and we should learn from it. Sri Lanka should permanently dissolve and eliminate Provincial Councils, and not have any internal administrative entities larger than a District.

"The high price of Sri Lanka’s war"
by Ranjith Jayasundera in Sunday Leader

AS the government's war against the LTTE enters the bloodiest phase in the country's history, our research has found that the costly war of attrition is irreparably scarring an entire generation of Sri Lanka's youth.

AS the government's war against the LTTE enters the bloodiest phase in the country's history, our research has found that the costly war of attrition is irreparably scarring an entire generation of Sri Lanka's youth.

The Sunday Leader has obtained a draft copy of a study circulated for peer review by Dr. Rohan M. Jayatunge and army psychiatrists that provides some insights into the trauma that soldiers faced after combat before 2008, a year in which over 1,200 soldiers have been killed from just six divisions.

According to the scientific study, there is a severe spread of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) amongst soldiers who have served in combat in the north and east and survived to tell the tale.

The paper, titled Psychological Management Of Combat Stress - A Study Based On Sri Lankan Combatants, reveals that over 17,000 soldiers were killed in combat up to 2001, and interestingly enough, it also claims a similar number of LTTE cadres killed in the same period, indicating a 1:1 kill ratio.

Further, the army claims to have killed over 9,000 Tigers in 2008 to date. Coupled with media reports of over 350 civilians killed in combat this year, Eelam War IV has cost Sri Lanka over 10,500 lives in 2008, the highest number of people killed in any one year during the conflict's 25 year history.

It must be remembered that even these figures are only accurate up until the end of October, when the military officially stopped giving out casualty figures for its own losses or those of the LTTE for "security reasons."

In the last month however, it is well known that gruelling battles have taken place with heavy casualties on both sides as the army pushes harder to surround and capture Killinochchi, and bridge the gap between its forces in Muhamalai and those on the northern tip of the country's mainland.

Fighting

In one particularly fierce three day bout of fighting, Defence Watch Spokesman and SLFP (M) Parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera told journalists that over 200 soldiers had been killed in fighting, between November 15 and 18 alone.

Never in any one month this year has the government ever admitted that it lost more than 200 soldiers, thus the increase in intensity of the combat action in the month of November, with the budget debate looming, and many deadlines having been missed for the capture of Killinochchi, is alarming.

The Sunday Leader's journalists researched the available data on conflict related deaths in Sri Lanka since 1994 and the data confirms that the country has just endured the bloodiest year in its 25 year history of waging and surviving war.

The second bloodiest year in the conflict was 1995, when Jaffna was recaptured by the army, with the deaths of approximately 5,000 soldiers and LTTE cadres in total. This is less than half as many as had been killed by November 2008, when the army's casualty count began to skyrocket as losses peaked by coincidence on President Rajapakse's birthday, just days after he awarded a one year extension to Army Commander Sarath Fonseka.

We have no choice but to await with baited breath the final tally of men, women and children who would have been laid to rest this year by the war. What is remarkable is that the government has managed to hide the human cost of the battle by maintaining tight control of what is published in the media.

Campaign

However, several excerpts from the yet-unpublished military trauma report show that this war is not as glamorous as the government makes it out to be in its glitzy recruitment and propaganda campaign. Rarely enough do we stop to think of the trauma undergone by the families of soldiers who lost loved ones in this campaign, and never at all does the level of stress undergone by war survivors occur to anyone.

The report highlights the experience of a 32 year old lance corporal who witnessed a fellow soldier die in a landmine explosion. "Even though he managed to escape without a single injury, he saw how his friend died in the blast. His depressive features appeared as survival guilt, self blame, hopelessness, grief and bereavement."

There is also another account of a private who witnessed his best friend, another soldier in his unit, being killed in a sniper attack. "After the confirmation" of the death, the private "was ordered to bury the body," but felt that the body was warm to the touch, possibly due to hot weather.

"After some years he had an irrational feeling that he buried the man alive," the report said, before spiralling into depression. The report is jam-packed with similar instances of surviving soldiers having their lives wrecked for good by what they experienced in the 'glorious' liberation crusade.

Explode

A lieutenant who witnessed seven soldiers explode due to an incoming enemy mortar and became schizophrenic, a sergeant who lost a leg and became violent and addicted to cannabis, and a captain who served for 20 years being "exposed to heavy combat" who felt a "misfit to civil society" and found it "uneasy to work with civilians," are the stories scattered throughout the study.

All of these examples are from soldiers who were in combat prior to 2008, which has now turned out to be the most deadly year in the history of the war by the government's own statistical killing claims.

Slain

Most importantly, this was before the armed forces were committed to a war of attrition over a year-long campaign in which over 1,200 of their own were slain and over 7,000 permanently maimed and scarred. At least some senior officers will recall and recant the fact that several hundred soldiers did not have to die to capture Pooneryn in 1992, and also that the capture was inconsequential as the base was recaptured by the LTTE but one year later.

They will also remember that Killinochchi was captured by the army in 1996 without 1,000 soldiers dying trying, and that Madhu - and its now infamous shrine - was also captured in 1999.

In that campaign as in this one, the army held Jaffna and attempted to corner the LTTE into the Mullaitivu jungles, before they sprang out of nowhere and wreaked havoc across the island, seizing both Madhu and Killinochchi - and everything in between - in a blitzkrieg of Nazi proportions.

Although the Tigers may not have such a capability any longer, they need not strike so hard in order to cripple the country, a fact that has now been lost on every major political party in the country including the UNP, which just announced its tacit support for the war in its bloodiest ever phase.

The Tigers need do little more than let the country drag itself further into debt with the cost of its war, while believing they are closer to success, and inflict maximum casualties upon the army and terrorise Colombo with suicide bombs, to bring Sri Lanka to a position where barely a country will turn to help.

With every nation in the world reeling from the shockwaves of the global economic crisis it is unlikely that there will be any country willing to come to the aid of an island that is pursuing an internationally condemned war of attrition and territory as its first priority.

Devastating

The recent accusations that the air force has been using cluster bombs against civilian targets in the Wanni, would also prove devastating if it can be proven. To its credit, the government has denied the allegation, and the LTTE and its proxies have been unable to find any evidence of actual unexploded cluster 'bomblets' that such weapons always leave behind.

Alongside the revelation made by Mangala Samaraweera in parliament that the air force has dropped over 14 kilotonnes of explosives in the Wanni this year, if cluster bombs were to be used, Sri Lanka's air force would set a second world record.

The SLAF already holds the unenviable record of being the first, only and thus most frequent dropper of bombs on its own citizens, and the government would gain little from being seen in the eyes of the world as having used cluster munitions on a refugee camp as alleged by some NGOs and the LTTE.

Factors such as this are what bring memories of how the United States lost the war in Vietnam not in the Viet Cong jungles but in the living rooms of Americans at home who witnessed the brutality that the war inflicted to all sides, and pressured that government to abandon Vietnam.

The lines that the army is now holding are stretched across several hundred kilometres and with every advance the terrain becomes more favourable to the LTTE due to their familiarity with the combat environment.

As the campaign gets longer, the troops on the frontline will become wearier and a lot of them must already be under immense psychological stress from prolonged exposure to combat conditions. The study of military combat stress says as much.

"The percentage of study subjects whose responses met the screening criteria for major depression, generalised anxiety, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was significantly higher after serving" in the north and east.

Shot

"There was a strong reported relation between combat experiences such as being shot at, handling dead bodies, knowing someone who was killed or killing the enemy, and the prevalence of PTSD," the study concluded, adding finally that there was "a significant risk of mental health problems especially regarding combat related PTSD."

These are exactly the kind of poor conditions that the late Major General Janaka Perera warned would imperil the military campaign should it drag on for months through the monsoon and beyond.

In order to maintain its popularity and war fever in the south, the government would have to prevent the LTTE from repeating their Eelam War III performance of materialising out of the Mullaitivu jungles and smashing through army lines like so many dominoes.

For the sake of the next thousand soldiers who are now on the front line, we can only hope that the military leadership is as competent at protecting its own as it is at marketing and fighting wars of words and propaganda.

Its interesting to see how the divisions movements have been in relation to their start point.

58- Mannar, Vedi, Pooneryn and Paranthan - Movement L shape - that of a Knight

57 - Mannar towards Kili - Movement diagonally - that of a bishop

59 - Movement almost vertically up - Movement of a Rook

TF3 - Horizontal movement - Rook

So the Chess Board analogy looks good!

Wonder what 53,55 would be - The Queen (?) biding its time till the blockades are removed to enter into the center of the board where is can exert the maximum force?

The race to Kilinochchi begins
]

After the above declaration our troops liberated;

Pooneryn
Nadunkarni
Kokavil
Sinna Paranthan
Mulliyawalai
...
...

Next one to fall seems to be the all improtant Paranthan. Our forces may very well liberate Elephant Pass well before Kilinochchi.

Does it appear to you that Army commander was not being very truthful when he told Prbakaran that he's going to take Kilinochchi? Vezapissa's advices should tell him not to trust Lt. Gen. Sarath Fonseka any more :)

As for us modayas we are in no hurry. We are happy to see the LTTE terrorists locked in protecting its defacto capital while our troops bring other vital places under their control

As for you, you can continue to count the number of days to liberate Kilinochchi while ignoring all the other places that are taken away from your dreamland

As you are pointing out, it is urgent that we fully understand and follow what is happening in our neighbouring India. We must actively participate in Indian forums and make our views heard. Most Indians are extremely sympathetic towards the Sri Lankan people, after all we are the direct hirers of the Great Dharmashoaka.

Mighty Vishnu, the creator and destroyer of worlds,…

In fact, the concept of Hindu Thrimurthy is logics itself : Brhama the creator, Vishnu the preserver, Shiva the destroyer / recycler. These are three faces of the same supreme being, the Brahman.

Hindus consider Buddha as a Vishnu avatar, because Buddhism appears to be a philosophy for making the creation a happier place to live. This is not exactly correct since the ultimate aim of Buddhism is to go beyond Brahman itself ( Nirvana ) and be free from the Samsara ( Brahman ). Hindu Maoksha is the same and Nirvana .

As a Buddhist I profit also from more earthly Hindu concepts.

"The high price of Sri Lanka’s war"
by Ranjith Jayasundera in Sunday Leader

Well, someone is trying to sandbag the victory wagon of SLG. I hope the intentions aren't malicious.

It is true the war isn't pretty and the damages have been brutal for us even though we don't talk about them.

What the article doesn't tell is the alternative if we don't go through this difficult process.

Current operation is undoing our own mistakes with a significant price.

The lessons should be not to letting repeating the history again.

It is true, war is easy. After the war is the most difficult. Hopefully the leanings of winnings will be applied to after the war and SLG will pull us out of the mess than being the next Pakistan.

Unfortunately, this grace has left Sri Lanka and most Sri Lankan temples a long time ago.

Modern Sri Lankans have abused Buddhism much more than their counterparts in the history.

"SLAF fighter jets, MI-24 helicopter gunships made successive ground-support air assaults at identified LTTE resistance positions and mobile units in general area Paranthan, today (Dec 31).

The air strikes were carried out since 12.30p.m, Air Force Spokesperson Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara said. At 12.30p.m, MI-24 helicopter gunships made initial attacks at LTTE, followed by 2 consecutive raids East and South of the Paranthan junction at 12.45p.m., and 2.45p.m, respectively.

The raids were concentrated at LTTE resistance positions while another attack was carried out at an LTTE command post and 2 vehicles fitted with anti-air craft guns in the Paranthan junction. The command post was destroyed along with a vehicle Spokesperson, Wing Commander Nanayakkara said, adding that the other vehicle was also damaged in the air strike."

earlier SLAF attacks were on targets west of paranthan. now they have shifted to east and south! clearly SLA has advanced.

now the challenge is to clear the east and south of para.

LTTE's use of AA guns show how important para is which is LTTE's gateway to their "historical jaffna kingdom".

two days ago i posted a video link to israeli jet attacking a haman truck carrying GRAD rockets and prayed that one day SLAF will hunt and attack like this. it came true in 2 days!

but this also means the battle FOR and IN para is far from over.

but we are winning it.

well done SLAF & SLA.

In any AF operation, there is a risk, that risk of miss hiting is 1mm to 5 cm, when it comes to mig, f series

People passionate about LTTE work hard, got their education, and integrated to the institutions that matters to push their fake cause down the throat of the rest of the world.

Meanwhile, we have developed a culture to dance around AK47.

he he he... excellent move by the MR led GOSL, which should get the bonus for taking on the LTTE pigs instead of `talking` to them.

Further, I would prefer to see the final victory is so planned.. so that it would arrive on the eve of next general election.... (this is my personal prediction too)... fittingly rewarding the present leadership... and the next five years could be used to lay the necessary foundation to develop the whole country.

This could be pre-planned... after totally sealing off the remaining terrorist enclaves to prevent supplies coming in.... and starting the waiting game to set-off civilians attacks against the LTTE pigs.

Slow... painful death... from the hands of the very civilians who were taken hostage.

That would be a world’s first... only from a `modaya` brand nation.

Kill more.... achieve more.

Buddhism has no place here.

Modern Sri Lankans have abused Buddhism much more than their counterparts in the history.

I disagree. This war was basically thrust upon us. After trying to avoid the inevitable for 30 years, we are finally going about it the correct way, with the will, determination and the ferocity required to win it.

However, as we proceed, we must keep in mind what we are fighting for; it is to preserve the unity of the country; a country largely guided by the tenets of the Buddha sasana; and to deliver the fruits of peaceful co-existence to our people as soon as possible.

Keeping Buddhist teachings in mind, will sustain our troops on the battle front, and us here, emotionally, and will prevent excesses normally associated with a brutal war such as this. It is a difficult thing to kill the enemy at one moment, and help heal them the next when they are captured. Buddhism helps people maintain that balance and self-control. Ultimately, both our troops and the defeated enemy must join civilian society. They will be able to do so without becoming violent social misfits only if they can maintain a measure of rational humanity. Buddhism (and other compassionate religions)will help them do that. If society as a whole does not provide these fighters on both sides with that emotional support, we will create a monster with whom the rest of the population will find difficult to live with in the future. Ultimately, religion is what prevents us from descending into barbarism, even as we fight a brutal war of survival.

It is in this context that I worry about whether the defeated Tiger cadre, who have known no parental love in their childhood, and have only imbibed hate and violence from the LTTE as they grew up, can ever be successfully rehabilitated to become productive members of society. They will need a lot of close supervision, lots of psychological assistance, lots of contact with monks and priests, well meaning mentors, adoptive parents if they have none of their own, education for those who did not go to school, and assistance in training for meaningful employment, in the future. THis is essential not only from a humanitarian standpoint, but also from the point of view of self preservation of the society at large.

The Sinhala soldier is emotionally better off, having the support of his community. I hope their needs are not forgotten when they war ends. I can think of no one better suited to participate in helping in the rehabilitation of the captured Tiger cadre, than our own Sinhala soldiers, because they have shared the kinship of the horrors of this war.

Indeed, there are aspects of monks, priests, laymen and temples that are quite contrary to the essence of the religion; that is something we must work on to correct. However, that is no reason to issue a blanket broad-brush condemnation of religious institutions as a whole. Many times in Sri Lanka's history, the Buddha Sasana has been cleansed by the reigning monarch. In christianity, emperor Constantine the Great, did the same, defrocking abusive priests, and enforcing peace between different segments of a warring clergy. Every religion has had corruption and schisms, and great healers, both royal and common, have emerged to heal the difference and refocus the clergy on the reasons that justify their existence.

You are right! Many Indians loved it and supported me (I am posting under the handle of Sinha since no posts are accepted any more from Ananda-USA because I posted too many times in one news article!) and the gist of my message in their comments!

When you are in Rome, you have to do as the Romans do. So, rather than try to convince them of the justice of our cause with Buddha's teachings, I sometimes try to use Hindu teachings and gods...it relates to them better.
