A secret plan to extract Prabhakaran and Poddu Ammaan from the battlezone has/is in operation. A team of influential Tamil expatriates had arrived in Chennai to coordinate this mission, which is being organized by the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) of India.
The plan was/is to extract Prabhakaran and Poddu Ammaan and bring them to safety and to coordinate disruptive attacks in Sri Lanka from abroad. It is DefenceWire's understanding that the plan was hatched under pressure from Tamil Nadu and to hold Sri Lanka to ransom over the long-run. An unspecified sum of money has been put together as the budget for this operation and two Ukrainian mercenary pilots have also been recruited, sources told DefenceWire.
The second part of the plot is to get the remaining top-ranking LTTE leaders to surrender to the ICRC, which, according to international norms, prevents any interference from the Army. This was to ensure the lives of these second and third-rung leaders will be safe and they would receive amnesty since no specific charges can be leveled against them by the AG's Department. After receiving amnesty, the men and women cannot be touched and they would be free to coordinate their plans in Sri Lanka.
There is now fresh doubt as to whether Prabhakaran and Poddu have already been extracted. The Navy said last week it had fired at a plane that had come and landed at Puthukudiirippu and left. The Air Force refused this claim. The SLAF has recently been having some problem detecting and intercepting small low-flying aircrafts.
There is also some doubt as to whether an escape was made via the sea. 10 Tigers were extracted on the 18th of this month by an LTTE Sea Tiger Boat from Pulmoddai, indicating some gaps in the Navy's own defenses.

Sri Lanka has lost unquantifiable wealth in the form of human capital lost, in combat as well as immigration. Today an end of an era is dawning. Still we are committing brave lives into a final cleansing of our national soul by drenching it in young blood. Anyway I have a question about Sethusamudram. I have heard many things about it but I am unclear what is was exactly intended for, and who benefits.
Sethu was originally touted by its supporters as a great strategic asset for India, enhancing both maritime security and commerce by creating a shortcut and bypassing Sri Lanka between the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. A Sri Lankan journalist had written along these lines.
Conversely, Sethu was seen in Sri Lanka in quite negative terms, as it would ruin the port industry in Colombo and potentially disrupt the ecosystem in the Palk Bay (one reason cited for the relatively less damage to western Sri Lanka from the tsunami was the Sethu bridge).
Therefore it was a bit surprising when Indian navy chief Adm. Suresh Mehta stated that large ships would not be able to use the Sethu canal, thus making the entire strategic value of the project irrelevant. It seems that Sethu would only be valuable for local (i.e. Tamil Nadu) commerce.

I agree about the logic against the Sethu project. There may also be a startegic risk to Sri Lanka from a security point if it is TN that will control it. It would be better to offer a compromise solution to TN by offering a rapid transit system from Trinco to Mannar (at a cheaper rate than they could get in paying off the cost of Sethu project). make it a win-win which attracts cooperation of TN which will ensure that they would not want to disrupt SL politics again. Otherwise SL could also make a big hoo0hah along the lines of International Law and demarcation and insist on joint operation and monitoring of a Sethu Channel.
The latter is less desireable for SL.

I have been reading the latest crop of misguided humanists advocating the same follies that put Sri Lanka in mortal jeopardy in the recent past. A new "misguided humanists club" has emerged for this very purpose, some even acknowledging to have been "former LTTE supporters", but not now, we are happily informed!

These are the same people who had no solution to our problems except to sit on the sidelines wringing their hands in hypocritical sorrow, while aiding and abetting the destruction of our country with their divisive discouraging pronouncements.
These are the same people, now that a few brave leaders have taken up the challenge of unifying the country, and brilliantly succeeding in its defense, who are re-emerging from hiding to tell us that we should dance to the same discredited tunes they sang in the past.
Sri Lanka should never again be allowed to fall victim to the arguments of these people who will neither recognize, nor acknowledge, the errors of their ways, their failure to defend this country and all of our people. Yet presume they know what we should now do to protect it in the future.
We should now instinctively recognize the subtle destructive arguments offered by acknowledged LTTE supporters, and their more-dangerous witting and unwitting Sinhala collaborators, for who they really are, and reject them in full.
Sri Lanka must be fair to all of its people; this can be achieved by enforcing equal rights and equal responsibilities, yielding NO MORE, nor witholding ANY LESS, without any devolution of power to ethnic regions.
FAIRNESS implies EQUALITY...no community should expect to be granted MORE, or expect to receive LESS. All of Sri Lanka belongs to all of its people, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, language or caste. Let us actively put that concept into practice. Let us move now to DISMANTLE ALL FORMS OF DEVOLUTION OF POWER to Provincial Councils on ethnic, religious, linguistic or caste bases, and eliminate all administrative units sufficiently large to undermine and challenge the national government.
We should quickly move to ethnically integrate the country and demolish the very foundation for separatist demands. If India presumes to oppose us on this, we should firmly say "No Thanks", for you are not qualified to advise us! In support of declining their advice, we should point out the complete chaos prevalent in their country, the low-level of social equity in India compared to our own, and request they get back to us if they need any advice from us in solving their problems.

Associated Press kills story about civilians deaths after realizing they were subjected to a hoax

The Associated Press in a notice sent to all its client publications requested to kill the Sri Lanka war story that said 300 civilians have been killed and 1000 other civilians have been injured after realizing that they have been subjected to a hoax.
In the notice the Associated Press said, "Kill the Sri Lanka-Civil War story, V5414. The source denies he wrote the letter that said more than 300 civilians had been killed and 1,000 wounded in fighting in northern Sri Lanka."
Most of the Western news agencies have been subjected to the hoax of a letter purported to have been written by a Medical administrative doctor in the form of an urgent appeal letter emailed to news agencies embassies and aid agencies etc.
Dr. Varatharaja, the Regional Director of Health Services (RDGS) Mullaitivu, who is purported to be the originator of this "appeal" has denied any association with it, and states its contents are false and exaggerated; that it has not originated from him or his office, and that he does not agree with its contents, and that this "appeal" circulated in order to embarrass him.
An official Sri Lanka government statement said, "This is issued as an "URGENT APPEAL to the Government of Sri Lanka, the ICRC, the UN and the international community for medical supplies and medical teams to be sent to the Mullaitivu district." This false appeal refers to an "acute shortage of essential drugs and medical personnel in hospitals in the Mullaitivu District", aims at showing a major humanitarian catastrophe in the area.
This false "appeal" refers to "heavy fighting and continuous multi-barrel artillery shelling has resulted in more than that 300 internally displaced persons being killed and over 1000 'hundred' injured in Suthanthirapuram, Udaiyaarkaddu and Vallipuram in the Mullaitivu District".
A Sri Lanka government Health Ministry official said, "I must mention here that the first quarter drugs to these districts have been dispatched by the Ministry on priority even before the other districts were supplied.
Furthermore, I wish to state with utmost responsibility that I have been contacted by Dr. Vartharaja twice today, 27/1/2009 and he has categorically denied that the above mentioned public appeal has been made by him or originated from his office and he further stated that he does not agree with the contents of this appeal and that its contents are false and exaggerated in order to embarrass him. However, he requested me to expedite the delivery of the first quarter drugs from Vavuniya as the stocks were getting depleted.
"He further said that he does not have access to e-mail or fax facility to release such a statement and expressed his dismay and concern about it. It is therefore obvious that this has been done by destructive elements with sinister motives who want to embarrass the government and implicate Dr. Varatharaja with false propaganda. He also sought advice from me as to what he should do when the troops advanced towards the Pudukkudiyiruppu hospital. I advised him to move into the cleared areas with the patients to which request he very clearly replied that the LTTE has not given him permission to do so and that he feared to do it without their permission".

At DW, I recommended a CENSUS as the FIRST thing we should do, but I don't know whether I said it first. There was some discussion afterwards.
I completely agree with you; especially that it be done before the patriotism wanes and the nay-sayers begin to rule the roost.
Keeping INGOs and NGO out of the country will be an important part of preserving unity and focus within the country. Otherwise, these guys will soon be telling the GOSL what to do next, and the GOSL will be kept distracted forvever putting out the fires they light. The Govt should have a uniform policy and law that they can direct the NGOs and INGOs to without too much discussion.
Incidentally,
I don't believe any of the hogwasg that has been handed to us by the Media, by the UN, by the ICRC, by other NGOs about the number of civilians trapped in uncleared areas at present. Part of the LTTE strategy in moving civilians out of areas well before they abandon them has been partly to prevent an accurate head count. They tell the UN and ICRC how many people they have, and these agencies pass it on to the GOSL...that is the way they have been getting MUCH MORE supplies than warrented by the civilian population under their control. It has been a CON-GAME from start to end.
I am expecting no more than 50,000 civilians, largely Mahaveer families, to be still in the uncleared areas.
I expect the reasons to be:
1. Serve as a human shield.
2. To continue to get supplies (food, fuel, medical) from the GOSL as long as they can,
and perhaps most importantly
3. To provide an escape route for the rank-and-file LTTE cadre by hiding their weapons and joing the crowd as "civilians." These are carefully selected Mahaveer families trusted not to identify and turn-in the LTTE cadres hiding among and posing as civilians. Other Vanni civilians, especially those who have suffered at the hands of both the LTTE and the Mahaveer families (e.g., by asymmetric distribution of GOSL provided essentials) are EXCLUDED from this civilian population. These civilians also would assist in hiding, and know the whereabouts of the arms, ammunition, explosives, communications equipment, supplies. The SLA and Military Intelligence should be especially careful and rigorous in interrrogating these people and keeping them under observation in the future. In a way, MI now has a way of identifying in one fell swoop those people who are trusted to serve the LTTE in the FUTURE.
Finally, I think the SLA is going to find very little of the arms used against the SLA. Even the heavy artillery guns, the mortars, aircraft, will all have been dismantled and hidden. These hiding places could be in jungles, beaches, near-offshore sea, wells, reservoirs, streams (in sealed barrels?), house floors, house roofs, backyards, PAVED and UNPAVED public streets, etc.
FINDING these arms and equipment will be a major post-war task. Interrogation and surveillance of the Mahaveer families remaining in the current uncleared area will be central to preventing a resurgence of guerilla warfare in the years that lie ahead!
One of the benefits of living in a tropical country is that the wet and humid environment causes a rapid deterioration of anything metal, including weapons. Even the arms caches that were discovered in Thoppigala were basically unusable because of rust. The AK47/T56 has a Chrome-lined barrel so it can take a lot of wear during regular use but everything else in the gun is prone to rust if exposed to the elements. Sri Lanka is not like Iraq, a semi-arid environment, where weapons can be stored for a length of time. Therefore, the chances that the LTTE can store weapons for the long-haul is not feasible in my opinion.

Did anyone watch the Al-Jazeera's recent report on the status of the LTTE? In it, there were three gentlemen, of which two were supportive of the military offensive. However, one of them, an antropologist from US West coast, had appalling skills of expression, and didn't say anything useful. The other one, a journalist from Sunday Observer was much better, but even then, not quite upto standard. The LTTE supporting guy, another anthropologist, was very quite eloquent; and did what he had to do quite skillfully (at least better than both our guys).
My question is WHY can't we have the best of our guys at the forefront of these debates? If I was invited for an interview, and if I felt I was not really the best person to skillfully discuss the issue, I would have asked someone better.
It was rather pathetic listening to those dimwits.

The coexistence has created problems because of diaspora influence. The Tamils living among Sinhalses do understand each other well.
I think integration reduces social tension and competition between groups.

It is pertinent to note that some of the Sinhalese kings had inscriptions in Tamil (the older language) as well.
Perhaps this was because Tamils always had a stake in Sri Lanka, and the Kings wanted to make sure that invading (or otherwise) Tamil people understood the royal decrees; and importantly they considered Tamils to be a part of our nation.
Those kings, it seems understood the cyclical nature of war and peace that existed amongst the two communities.
Are we hoping mend this ancient rift/good-will cycle just by trying to force the two communities to live together? Or is there a something more that could be done? That is the question.
Remember, take a step back, and we are already living as an integrated community within Sri Lanka. It is only a question of perspective - the size of the region that is under issue.

Concerned by New Delhi's inaction and driven by the need to bring about change in the prevailing tragic scenario in Vanni, five leaders of prominent Tamil Nadu parties, Vaiko, Dr. S. Ramadoss, Nedumaran, Thirumavalavan and D. Pandian, jointly launched the Eezham Tamils Protection Movement (ETPM) following a consultative meeting in Chennai Wednesday. Top leaders of the Pattali Makkal Katchi, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Communist Party of India, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Tamil Nationalist Movement held closeted discussions on how to save the Eelam Tamils.
Tamil Nationalist Movement leader Nedumaran has been chosen as the convenor of this front. As the first step, the ETPM has announced a silent black-flag protest near the Gandhi Statue on the Marina beach in Chennai on Friday, Jan 30, Gandhi's death anniversary.
According to news-reports, the ETPM will meet again on Jan 31 in order to include other political, religious, social organizations, trade unions, NGOs, Tamil organizations, women's and student's movements under the common umbrella. The meeting on Saturday will also chalk out the strategy to save Tamils and stop genocide on the island.
Those who took part in Wednesday's meeting include PMK founder-leader Dr.S.Ramadoss and party president G.K.Mani; CPI's veteran leader Nallakannu, state secretary D. Pandian and joint-secretary C.Mahendran; MDMK's general secretary Vaiko, deputy general secretary Mallai Satya and member of parliament K.S.Radhakrishnan; VCK's President Thirumavalavan, Joint General Secretary Chozha Nambiar, Headquarters Secretary Vanniarasu and Spokesperson Aarvalan; and Tamil Nationalist Movement's President Nedumaran.

Submarine tech has a high premium on it. If the 35ft long one discovered by Task Force 3 is in working operation, who supplied the know-how? Norwegian Secret Service? There was a report that Norwegian Naval Commando's were training LTTE cadres in Thailand a few years back. They also had a hand in delaying the shipment of MBRLs to SL.
Whatever its sorce, the Navy should gets its engineers onto this to clone, improve and perfect the tech.... its about time the SL Navy had a Submarine Force! Now I have seen more and more posts from terrorists like Nadesan, Pulidevan etc. in tamilnut quite reasontly. But they were silent quite a few months specially after October 2008. I think it's a clear indication that these terrorists have fled the country during November December period and got settled in countries like Norway specially Pulidevan. So now they can start their propaganda work from remote. I think it's very important that somehow SLG should eliminate these cowards and their cheap propaganda.
