At the gates of the grand finale of Eelam War IV

Teams from the 58 Division spearheaded by Commandos managed to enter the main built-up area of the Puthukudirippu Town last afternoon but the Town could not be completely cleared due to stiff resistance from small teams of hardcore LTTE fighters who are moving about and engaging the Army in hit-and-run waves even as we speak.

Fighting is raging in visible-range as infantry units fight almost face-to-face with the Tigers at times. Beyond visual range or Trajectory Weapons like the LTTE's heavy guns have fallen silent. 120mm mortars seems to be the only heavy artillery the Tigers have and these are being fired occasionally from civilian settlements in the general area Mathalang and even from the designated No Fire Zones. 130 and 152 fire has ceased almost completely.

Tigers aren't the only ones who have limited the heavy firepower. Whereas the LTTE has abandoned its heavy guns due to lack of shells, SLA has limited theirs due to concerns of civilian safety. Clearing Puthukudirippu might take weeks as the Tigers have painstakingly booby trapped all buildings, including houses that FIBUA teams could potentially use for cover and tactical advantage.

Despite all obstacles the indicators are that the Tigers might withdraw further towards civilian settlements tonight or tomorrow morning. Capturing Puthukudirippu permanently is a matter of time. Ground sources claim that the Tigers might attempt one massive attack tonight or early tomorrow morning. If this attack doesn't come, it could come soon after the Town is secured.

We are fast approaching the final hours of Eelam War IV. The ball is in the LTTE's court now to try and prevent it. If the LTTE does not come up with a miracle within the next 12hrs, the next alternative for the Tigers is to either die at the hands of the SLA or hide among the civilians.

Reply to my email from Foreign & Commonwealth Office - England

Dear ********,
Thank you for your e-mail of 6 February 2009 to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office Minister of State, Bill Rammell MP, about the situation in Sri Lanka. The South Asia Group at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office which leads on Sri Lanka issues has been asked to reply.

We are extremely concerned about the impact that the conflict in northern Sri Lanka is having on civilians. Recent military developments have given rise to a deteriorating humanitarian situation. Civilians have been killed, while others have been wounded and are in desperate need of medical treatment. Humanitarian agencies are not able to deliver assistance. In a statement on 29 January, the Foreign Secretary called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Sri Lanka so that civilians have the opportunity to move away from the conflict area and humanitarian assistance can be safely delivered. Wounded civilians must receive the care they urgently need and if necessary must be safely evacuated to appropriate medical facilities where they can be treated. We continue to urge all parties to facilitate safe and open access for humanitarian agencies to work in areas affected by the conflict and to abide by their obligations under International humanitarian law.

In January, the Department for International Development committed an additional £2.5 million in humanitarian aid to the £2.5 million already provided in October 2008. These funds are being used to help underwrite the efforts of key UN agencies, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and other humanitarian agencies organisations on the ground in Sri Lanka to provide protection and deliver humanitarian assistance.

We condemn the killing of civilians in the strongest possible terms and urge all parties to the conflict in Sri Lanka to take action to avoid civilian casualties.

The Foreign Secretary made clear in his statement on 2 February that we are deeply saddened by the reports of civilian casualties from the shelling of the ICRC hospital in Puthukkudiyiruppu.

We urge all parties not to fire out of or into the "safe zone" or in the vicinity of the Puthukkudiyiruppu hospital, or any other medical structure. The Foreign Secretary repeated these calls in a joint statement with US Secretary of State Clinton on 3 February.

In his Written Ministerial Statement on 21 January, the Foreign Secretary called on both sides to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and to ensure the safety of civilians. This follows earlier calls by Lord Malloch Brown and Shahid Malik in their joint statement of 26 September 2008.

Most reports on the ground suggest that Government of Sri Lanka bombing in the north is focussed on LTTE targets, and that the bombing is not indiscriminate. Nevertheless, we continue to underline to all sides the importance of protecting civilians in ongoing military activity, both by avoiding civilian casualties in bombing raids and by allowing civilians to move away from potential military targets.

The UK wishes to work constructively with the Government of Sri Lanka to help alleviate the humanitarian situation. We believe that for peace to be sustainable, an inclusive political process that takes fully into account the legitimate concerns of all Sri Lankan communities, Sinhalese, Tamil and Muslim, is essential. The UK will do what it can to help.

On 12 February the Prime Minister appointed Des Browne, MP, as his Special Envoy for Sri Lanka. The appointment of an envoy is a measure of the UK's commitment to work constructively with the Government of Sri Lanka. Presently, the Sri Lankan government has yet to accept the appointment. We continue to discuss this appointment with them.

Subject: Britain says Sri Lanka hospital attack 'unacceptable' - Yahoo news

Dear Bill,

I am a Sri Lankan ******** and I have noticed your comment given to international media about your concern over Sri Lanka war situation. It looks that you have not received latest correct information about this issue in Sri Lanka . Please visit below link to watch the noted hospital (Puthukudduyiruppu hospital) video pictures taken by Sri Lanka air force beach craft yesterday (Feb 5) at around 1.55p.m.

It is impotent that collecting much as possible information and evidence before making such serious comments to the international medias as responsible MP of British parliament.

If you listen to the choice of horror words by NGO/Aid Agencies/HRW to motivate powerful forces are:

1) Guerrilla warfare even after LTTE is defeated.
2) Ruptured relationship.
3) Camps with trapped civilians.
4) Political solution.

Interestingly, they rhyme well with TamilNet .

[ NO END TO TERRORISM WITH RUPTURED RELATIONSHIP

The present military-centered mindset cannot be expected to bring peace now or in the future. The government and larger society need to recognize the political roots of terrorism and address that problem without equivocation.]

One another reason was that, for such movements to gain momentum or grow, you definitely need external assistance.Like Pak supporting Khalistan in Punjab and still supporting Kashmiri's in J&K

Such situation never arose in TN and even now there is no coducive atmosphere for such movement to gain momentum.

Actually, I beg to differ. In my view, both the environment/ atmosphere and the external assistance now exist for proceeding full speed ahead on the Greater Dravidian Nation agenda.

1. I see a nexus of power-hungry internal rabble-rousers (Vaiko, Thirumalavan, Ramadoss, Karunanidhi) coming together for personal gain on the Greater Dravidian Nation agenda. Karunanidhi is driven by dynastic amibitions...and writes poems praising Thamiselvan...in his emotional moments. Vaiko is a bosom pal of Prabhakaran, having broken bread with him hiding in the Wanni. Ramadoss is desperate to find a platform to propel himself into power, whether it is by exploiting Vanniyar-rights or Dalit rights. And then there is good old Thirumavalavan...getting rich fast on the LTTE payroll. Many of these guys bemoan the lack of an independent nation for Tamils, and stoke manufactured grievances against the non-Tamil Northern Indians.

2. The "external" input to this witches brew comes from that prodigal son Prabhakaran, the LTTE organization, and the Sri Lankan Tamil Diaspora. They still have a vast income generating machine for destabilizing Tamil Nadu, with a tax-paying diaspora population, investments in a vast array of businesses, established scams, front offices, safe houses, a phalanx of well trained international NGOs, and purchased politicians in western countries. We are talking here of a mature 0.5-2.0 billion USD/year criminal business enterprise. The LTTE mafia, spread out all over the world, need jobs, and dare not let their "cause" die. Well, Sri Lanka is too dangerous a place for them now, we are too well organized to cope with their antics; and with a SLDF scheduled to perhaps double in size in the coming years, there no possibility of a safe haven in Sri Lanka; that is gone for good. So,the LTTE now needs a friendly home and a different place to ply its "Tamil cause" with their characteristic enthusiasm.

3. What better place is there for them than the Tamil majority Tamil Nadu, and India, whose leaders are babes in the woods totally unprepared to cope with these con-artists. You see, they had a big problem in Sri Lanka...they were a very small minority...that problem does not exist in Tamil Nadu. They will come home to roost in Tamil Nadu, with "umbilical cord" appeals, bribery, threats and murder as their well-worn tools of the trade. Here is a fertile ground for mayhem, where gullible people can be whipped up into an ethnic frenzy and made to immolate themselves like flies in a bonfire. They have already grease the wheels and bought all the necessary politicians needed to stoke the fire for the big rollout of the LTTE bandwagon. For example, there is our hero Thirumavalavan who went on a "fast unto death" and called it off "upon heartfelt pleas made" by another LTTE lackey because he was too valuable to the cause to be allowed to pass into the netherworld. I think people who call off fasts unto death prematurely should be immediately beheaded...don't you? Calling off fasts without achieving their goals gives every upright politician, like Mahatma Gandhi, a bad name...quite reprehensible. Mind you, the poor people who burnt themselves were Indian Tamils, not Sri Lankan Tamils, and certainly not the LTTE operatives who have complex plans to raise families, and see their children through college in the best of western universities, and retire in luxury. That is LTTE leader's forte... getting other people to sacrifice themselves on the altar of their cause.

4. There is already a group of militants training in Tamil Nadu for guerilla warfare...they only lack a fulltime leader with impeccable credentials in terrorism...enter the maximum Thalaivar....Vellupillai Prabhakaran!

5. Politicians in Tamil Nadu have already announced the Greater Dravidian Nation (GDN) principle: they claim to represent, and assert jurisdiction over, all Tamil people allover in the world, no matter how small a fraction of the total population of a country they are. All they ask for is that you are a majority in a region no matter how small..could be a a street, a village, a borough...and that becomes a part of the Greater Dravidian Nation with an inalienable right of self-determination as a part od the GDN. It was a similar assertion by Hitler with respect to the German Diaspora in Europe that started WW-II...which basically destroyed a whole generation of German people. In the case of Tamil people, it is only going to jeopardize their security, and their image, all over the world.

6. Summarizing, all ingredients, potentially including a fifth-column within the RAW organization, necessary and perhaps sufficient to set Tamil Nadu on fire, now exist in Tamil Nadu. I hope some leaders will emerge in Tamil Nadu with the wisdom to recognize this looming danger to the lives of their people. In Sri Lanka, unfortunately, our leaders did not have that vision, or the determination, to resist it with all their strength, until now.

Ananda-USA,
Well said.

In my assesment, the situation has neither gone that worse nor is there any scope for such developments.WHy??

1>Yes,there is a nexus amongst Vaiko\Thiruma\Ramadoss & Karuna has been left out of this. The reason that Ramadoss went against Karuna is very simple. He switches alliance every poll.He only needed a reason to move out now.If you go back to the start of the current drama going on in TN now,it was neither Vaiko or Thiruma or Ramadoss who started it.It all started as a simple protest by CPI-India to grab some media space.Karuna didnt like it as he considers himself to be the self annointed leader of the world tamils and jumped in the foray.Vaiko who has been a buddy for VP all along, didnt like it and Ramadoss who needed a reason jumped into the fray to form a nice cocktail.JJ who has been staunch opposer to Tigers,as usual made her stance clear
Vaiko was completely sidelined in ADMK alliance and for him to have a better bargaining power,he needs an umbrella organization through which he can get better benifits in the forthcoming polls.Money trickling in from Tigers and diaspora is only an incentive.

Even when the Dravidian nation concept was at its peak in the late 60's,it never had a forcefull voice. In my assesion, what leaders like Annadurai \ Periyar couldnt do,Vaiko\Ramadoss\Thiruma can never even dream about it.

I repeat, the only problem that Tamilnadu faces is the CM is not a one with strong will, but always ensures that he doesnt loose out.Enter JJ and all these guys will be put in their place. The rulling Congress too is not very happy about the noise made by these people, hence in all likelyhood,Congress and JJ could go together. When that happens, these people will be put in their places.

2>Prabha gives the external force - I agree. But not for reasons that you predict. You people might have watched VP more closely than I did.Do you think he is the sort of the person who could leave out the supreme post to someone else.Do you think he can accept the leadership of a Karuna or his son \ Vaiko \ Ramadoss etc.He can never do it.We have ample proof for this in the way that he ruthlessly went about eliminating his fellow Tamil militants. He is definitely behing the rubble rousing in TN now,but that is for a diff reason. He is testing waters to see,if the situation in TN could turn so much that ,if he decides to escape he can carryout his operations in Tamilnadu. If the base that he built in 80's and removed completely during the 90's be built again.

Remember for him to do that,he needs to have a State government and Central govt that is coducive to him.He had his base here when Indira in Centre & MGR in state helped him. When MGR died,Karuna came to power and also in Central VP Singh came to power in a coalition which had Karuna as one of its main members. So again the situation was conducive for him.But when JJ in state and Congress in Centre came back, his base was evicted and he had to forget TN.Remember even during the 2002,CFA inspite of the repeated requests from LTTE and also to some extent from GoSL,the Indian govt(Remember it was the BJP Govt in Centre) and JJ in state didnt allow Bala to land in Chennai nor undergo medical treatment in TN.

3>As I said before Thiruma \ Vaiko \ Ramadoss cannot perform the task as Tigers believe. They cannot generate enough hysteria amongst the masses for an atmosphere where Tiger's can unleash their propoganda. As you said people who self immolated are Indian tamils. But what needs to be understood is self immolation is such a curse on TN.You know people self immolate for obscure reasons. When Vaiko was evicted from DMK,4 of his supporters self immolated and died. But the same Vaiko later was in alliance with Karuna and I still remember the teary eyed press conference he did as he has come back to his elder brother again. So the point I am trying to make is these are usual ones for people of Tamilnadu and they are well used to it.All these will not do anything to change their mindset even a bit.

4>I dont know from where you got that. But I can assure that there is no iota of truth in that. You know even the Naxal movement was killed ruthlessly and TN is not the right place for that.

5>I agree that Karuna claims to be the self annointed leader of world Tamils. But he was put in place by the Malaysian minister when Karuna voiced his opinion on the state of tamils there.I find it really really surprising that such strong statements never came from GoSL.Why?

So with all this,I can clearly say that such danger does not exist in Tamilnadu. The Tiger's had a chance to do so earlier. If not for May21,1991,I am so sure that Tiger's could have atlease used Tamilnadu as a safe haven for escaping cadres and treating their injured cadres. But VP and his king sized ego killed all such possibility in one stroke. With all this war raging, you can see we dont even have any refugee impedus to India - that itself explains India's position and moreso the atmosphere here in Tamilnadu.
To conclude,I would like to state, the ruckus created by Vaiko and his fellow joker's has already started to fizzle out and once the election dates for Central election are announced, this issue will be completely forgotten. Why - because those joker's know that they cant harves any votes with this issue and thats all that matters.

The subtle terror of the International Relief Organizations by By Christian Eckert

An article by a foreign journalist calling for the investigation of NGOs.

Our govt. should not let go of the NGOs who supported terrorism. They should be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.
