Danger of LTTE taking the fight to civilian safe zone

Latest military reports indicate that the LTTE could have a fighting force of around 2,000 cadres, majority of whom are those forcibly recruited during the Cease-Fire and paraded before the media under such names as "RPG Commandos", "Leopard Commandos" and "Black Tigers".

Sources indicate that these cadres are fighting largely out of fear and are ready to flee every chance they get. Their morale is low but are unfortunately trapped by hardcore cadres and are afraid to surrender to the Army due to brainwashed mistrust in the SLA. However, the Army recently discovered families of LTTE martyrs among the civilians who had escaped to the government's side.

The major concern now is whether the fighting, which is concentrated mainly in and around Puthukudirippu and Ampalavanpokkanai could shift to the civilian safe zone as the Tigers run out of places to retreat. These areas start just north of Mulaitivu Town as one crosses the Wattuwan Bridge in Mulaitivu north.

Areas like Mullaivaikkal, Vellamullaivaikkal, Mathalang and Puthumathalang are designated civilian safe zones. These areas continue to be used for military purposes by the LTTE in complete disregard for civilian safety. Even the agents of a powerful multilateral humanitarian agency recently revealed that the two Zlin 143s involved in the aerial suicide mission on Colombo had taken off from near a civilian settlement along a stretch of beach at Mullaivaikkal in the designated civilian safe zone.

Meanwhile ground sources confirmed to DefenceWire that it was the 53 Division which had reached the Puthukudirippu built-up though the Commander of the 58 Division was quoted by the media as saying it was the 58 which had first breached the PTK built-up.

"I think that video was an old one, I dont think our troops goes by this kind of truck anymore in battle fields..for sure now days..."

I have to disagree with you.
Some times even the Brigade Commander has to travel to the battlefield in his personal vehicle, which is in the best condition a Land Rover.. else it is a Toyota Jeep.

Simply, we do not have enough APCs to transport troops.

Dear Kasturi,

You take the CAKE... lol

you start with this...

"Most Sri Lanka patriots believe demise of LTTE is due to sheer brilliance of His Excellency the president of SL, his brother, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakshe and SL Army commander Lt.Gen. Sarath Fonseka. While there is good part of truth in that theory and the bravery of SLDF high calibre officers, rank and file, there is also another equally true facts are coming from the behaviour of Prabhakaran during last 20 years or so."

and end with this...

"Therefore, if MR, GR and SF have done their bit to get rid of bad rubbish, then Prabhakaran also did his part of self immolation by bringing eelam down in an irreversible process."

LOL...i see your true colors...sis

So...our fight was a only a "BIT"

lol

So...we fought a mauled outfit?

And we are harping...?

is that what you r trying to say...?

..and you get upset with SAkiliya comment?

and not with Chenaboys and Moda sinhalaya...?

So don't forget...I doubt your allegiance...i doubt your thought processes...i believe you need to come clean...

Good evening jack1234,

I hope that we all are waiting to see terrorists getting vanquished soon. Night time is always dangerous for our boys in Puthu and I hope that they are extra vigilant. Everyday, I go to sleep hoping our boys will comeback victorious and unscathed in everything they do. I am still waiting for the official confirmation of capture of Puthu. News is very flaky these days about Puthu.

as you can see I am not that well versed in the Military lingo!!
to me it looks like we are still on the perimeter of the town...
Unable to pierce the Terras FWD lines....
And it seems we are not going in full throttle with full force and completely overwhelm them?
3 divisions are being put on reserve, leave etc....
Just my humble,non military observation
think we need a blitz krieg type attack,
collateral damage yes but it wll be over soon....
should not drag this for too long...

Yes true muchun,
But my point is that IC pressure hasn't lessenned because of slow ,careful going of the SLA...
infact I'd say the LTTE lobby is using it to their advantage to press their case for a ceasefire/rescue from the IC...
The best thing we can do is not to give them any more time/any more breathing space.....
Think the israeli's this time treated the Hamas with TLC....
nope they went in with overwhelming force....
and it worked i'd say!!!

I have a feeling the demise of the LTTE top hierachy will be at the hands of those 70-100000 people they've held hostage.
You can push people only so far and I bet one of them civilians will snap and go beserk....
or maybe like the fate that befell "Laurent Kabila" Of "Democratic republic of congo", The Fat Pig will be taken out by one of them trusted inner circle bodyguards fed up with all this eelam shit.
In Kabila's case it was a teenager that pulled the trigger.....
now how ironic and fitting end for VP it would be...

There is one blogger who used to come here very often. He should be able to answer who Rajan Philips is better than everyone of us.

If you would Google his name, you should find about him. Engineer by profession, he is 'NOT' a supporter of LTTE.

Please do not add him to your list Sam.. Some people here may want to or already have Add him to the LTTE list, but I will not.

It would be like labelling DBS Jeyaraj as LTTE too.

Above is my personal opinion. I may be wrong too.

I think our boys attck using some specific weapons designed to attck ground to sea. But the way it was fired was not correct according to me. It should have been fired horizontal to the target, lowering the weapon. It will bounce on the water and once hit the hard surface it will blow. But I'm just an ordinary guy and have no idea whatsoever. LOL :-) just think after watching this video.

Anyway, what puzzled me is what the f*** our Navy is doing. Once captured, can't they come near coast upto that point (RABS and all other suitable means). SLA is doing all the hardwork building bunkers using heavy sand bags, demining ect. Can someone know about navy or have info on this clarify please? (Maybe I'm wrong)

NOLTTE=peace,

I agree. The list contains mostly very public personnel who have engaged in wanton anti Sri Lankan and pro LTTE acts. Also it is about ideological and political defeat of these unsavory elements. I was just curious to know who he is. Understandably, we will hear more of this in months to come. My personal view is that we have a long way to go in building bridges. That is why I am a strong proponent of improving our forces in strength and quality.

Cheers!

Prior to 1983 so called black July; there were number of Tamil militant groups operating on north of Sri Lanka. TELO, PLOTE, EROS, EPRLF and LTTE are some of them. However, their violence and harassments were limited to Tamil officers and civilians. They were scared to touch Sinhalese people who were operating and living in the north fearing a back clash from Sinhalese that could endanger their kith and kin living in the south.

It is very interesting to investigate; why LTTE break that hidden rule followed by all other militants. By exploding a powerful claymore mine and subsequently killing and mutilating remains of dead and alive soldiers shows clearly this was a well planned attack to provoke Sinhalese in the south against Tamil civilians.

Not only that, certain Tamil groups in the south were ready with cameras and videos to record as much as incidents possible for propaganda work. Then they distributed these materials speedily around the world. Most Tamils who were living in Colombo were relocated to north facilitating LTTE to recruit them freely. This was a master plan and Prabhakaran couldn’t have done it alone wit handful of supporters. This is a deliberate act planned by Research & Analysis Wing (RAW) of India with the help of Tamil Nadu politicians to destabilise Sri Lanka.

After the above incident LTTE tried the same tactics number of times without much success.

On 14th May 1985, LTTE gun men killed 120 and wounded 85 pilgrims, Buddhist monks and civilians at sacred Jaya Siri Maha Bodhi, Anuradhapura.

Similarly, On 2nd of June 1987 LTTE stopped bus carrying 33 Buddhist monks and few civilians, most of them were young novice monks; took them by force to the nearby Aranthalawa bush and used machine guns and swords to kill them all. This act has no military bearings what so ever and a deliberate attack on clergy to provoke Sinhalese in the south.
Then, at 0600 hrs Sri Lankan time on 25 January 1998 the Tamil Tiger terrorists blasted a high powered truck bomb in the city centre of Kandy, Sri Lanka’s ancient capital, killing scores of people and damaging the most revered 1000 year old world heritage site-the Temple of the Tooth.
Except for the first minor incident all other gruesome attacks on religious icons, clergy and civilians were tolerated by majority Sinhalese with tears but without harming innocent Tamils in the south.

Initiative and efforts undertaken by SLG to eradicate worst terrorist group in the modern world must be praised by all peace loving citizens in the world.

Patriots,

This is a window in to MIA's father's mind. Eelamist are still contemplating Eelam, now withing Sri Lanka. Otherwise, it is going to be a protracted guerrilla war waged by remnants of LTTE according to Arulpagasam. To quote a few words of his wisdom,

"Arudpragasam noted that Sri Lanka is not living in an era where a solution can be imposed against the will of a people. He observed that the present solution attempted in the island, which is via military combat, is about imposing a unitary state and for the Tamil people, this means the Sinhalese rule over them, which is what brought them to the current state in the first place. “It is necessary that we work out a solution that is going to be acceptable to the Tamil people.” With the question of acceptability arising, it was queried as to what exactly he proposes as acceptable to the Tamil people, to which he responded that although there are many other communities as well, the conflict is between the Tamil people in the North-East and the Sinhalese of the South - “The solution lies in bringing a new Sri Lanka into existence where people will feel their rights have been met and they don’t feel threatened.”

Who's will is he talking about? He seems to be justifying a solution to satisfy a minority against the will of the majority. To some reason, we need to bend over backwards to satisfy the will of the minority by totally ignoring the will of the majority. Democratic principles seem to be not something Mr. Arulparagasam can fathom. Furthermore, he has already arrived at the conclusion that there won't be any political solution at all.

Patriots, these are the characters and trends we will have to deal with in the future. Therefore, we need to improve/reshape our forces to face such threats while we are working on a mutually acceptable political solution. Otherwise, we and we alone are responsible for nearsighted policies promoted by many selfserving politicians and peacenikes.

"You have misunderstood.

the r2 is the annualized yield. So, for n years the yield is (1+r2)^n. So, if r2= 0.1058, then the total yield over 5 years is 1.1058^5= 1.653 or 65.3% yield over 5 years. Compare that against the 1.0188^5 = 1.0976 or 9.76% over 5 years from US banks!

You confused r2, the yield over 1 year with the yield of (1+r2)^5 over 5 years. :) :)"

no mate. with all due respect i humbly think you have got a little bit confused.

the correct formula is,

r2= [(E1/E2)*(1+r1)] - 1

your formula is,

r2= [(E1/E2)^(1/n)*(1+r1)] - 1

there is no "(^1/n)" in the formula!!!

check it out here. (or any site with finance stuff)

so if SL interest rate is 15% p.a. for 5 years and the spot exchange rate is Rs. 105 and after 5 years the rate is Rs. 120......

the US$ rate you are getting will be.....

r2= [(E1/E2)*(1+r1)] - 1

= 105/120*1.15-1
= 0.625% p.a

HSBS gives me 1.88%!!!

you can test this on ACTUAL US$/SLR in the recent past.

for e.g. from 2006 to 2009.

113.7430/102.1459= 1.1135346

[2009 jan ex rate/2006 jan ex rate]

if the SLR interest rate was 15%, US$ was around 3.3%. this sounds about right.

Who didn’t fear to defend our shores

Because they dared, because they died
Our be loving nation will live for ever,
Our unity, our peace and our pride

And since they paid the ultimate price
Were they held their life so cheap
And blithely made the greatest sacrifice
They knew the value so paid the price

With regard to invsting in NRFC accounts in Sri Lanka, the investor do not have to convert the dollars or GBP to Sri Lankan Rupees. Therefore as long as you get a higher rate of interest than that of rates offered by your local banks, you will gain. The amount of dollars/pounds will be the same at the end of the period with the additional interest.

The banks also offer a bonus that is approximately 20%.

The best satisafation would be that you gave the use of your earnings to your country without losing it, and in fact benefitting than if you had with local (foreign) banks. Its like you get rewarded for been patriotic.

If you have other investment options that gives you a higher yeild then investing in bank deposits, that a different story. The option of inevsting in Sri Lankan NRFC accounts/deposits is for you who invest money in bank term deposits in your countries.

We also need to convince the Central bank to introduce a bond for expat Sri lankans, rather than
paying large rates of interest to foriegn banks. (especially with the downgrade of the country rating by Fitch Central bank will have to pay a premium to borrow funds.

(There was a window of oppotunity when the TBrate for SL Rupee was 20% to convert funds and invest in SL Rupees. This is/was there as US$ is 'managed' by the Central Bank. I dont advise converting your currency as SL Rupee may need further depreciation for our products to be competitive and if you are caught in between then you would lose. Hence if you are not a finance expert just use NRFC deposits that do not require a conversion of the currency and help Sri Lanka.

M.I.A. and the bogey of genocide in Sri Lanka

By Dr. Muttukrishna Sarvananthan

I listened to the interview of Tavis Smiley of the Public Service Broadcasting (PBS) with Mathangi (aka Maya) Arulpragasam a hip-hop artist (stage name M.I.A.- Missing in Action) who has been nominated for Grammy and Oscar Awards for 2009.

Maya was born in Sri Lanka, so she claims (though I cannot confirm this fact but give her the benefit of the doubt) but lived most part of her life first in India and then in the UK and currently a British citizen, to the best of my knowledge. I don't think she has visited Sri Lanka ever since her family migrated to India in the early 1980s (and later to the UK), to the best of my knowledge.

Misinformation

Most of what M.I.A. said about the civil war in Sri Lanka during the course of the aforementioned interview was misinformation at best, blatant lies at worse, either due to ignorance or deceit. "It is ironic that I am the only Tamil, turned out to be the only voice for the Tamil people in the Western media" thundered M.I.A., a claim that smacks of self indulgence and echoes the claim of the LTTE that it is the sole representative of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. A claim accepted by very few Tamils in Sri Lanka or in the diasporas.

"There is a genocide going on, systematic genocide since 1983, Tamils being 20 percent of the population getting wiped out. 350,000 stuck in the battle zone getting wiped out. There are 4,000 Tamil Tiger soldiers but the Sri Lankan government, a million soldiers big, wants to wipe out the whole Tamil population," claims the self-appointed spokesperson and saviour of the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

I can forgive M.I.A. for her lack of understanding of the meaning of 'genocide' because she is not educated enough to understand such terms. I can refer her to an elaborate recent interview with Dr. Franklin Lamb by International Lawyers Without Borders. According to a statement issued by the United Nations on February 16, 2009, the LTTE is abusing Tamil civilians in the conflict zone as a human shield and shooting and killing civilians attempting to flee the conflict zone.

The UN also highlighted the fact that children under the age of 14 are forcibly recruited by the LTTE to fight this futile war. Is not the sacrifice of the Tamil children for a lost cause, a genocide of the next generation of the Tamil community?

When and how did M.I.A. count 350,000 Tamils in the battle zone? How did she know that there are one million soldiers in the Sri Lankan armed forces?

Tamils wiped out?

As a person who has undertaken post-conflict needs assessment in the conflict zones in early 2003 and post-tsunami needs assessment in early 2005 for the UN (mostly in LTTE-controlled territories) , I can authoritatively say that there are only about 100,000-150, 000 people in the battle zone (i.e. LTTE-held area in the Wanni) as of mid-February 2009, which amounts to a mere 0.50 - 0.75 % of the total population of Sri Lanka (circa 20 million). So, how on earth can she claim that Tamils accounting for 20% of the population are being wiped out?

Of course, unacceptable numbers of innocent Tamil civilians are being killed in the past few weeks by both sides, which is certainly a cause for grave concern. To the best of my knowledge, there are only about 300,000 personnel in the police and three armed forces (army, air force and the navy) of Sri Lanka, and not a million as M.I.A. claims.

Two ethnicities

M.I.A. also claimed that there are "two ethnicities - majority Sinhalese and minority Tamils" in Sri Lanka, which is factually incorrect. There are, in fact, several ethnic communities living in Sri Lanka - Sinhalese, Tamils of North and East, Muslims (though bulk of them speak Tamil they prefer to be identified as a separate ethnicity), Hill-country Tamils (migrants from Tamil Nadu state in India during the British colonial rule), Malays, Burghers, Chinese, Veddahs (indigenous people), Sindhis, Bohras, Memons, etc.

The self-professed "only voice for the Tamils in the Western media" left out some other 'truths' of the civil war in Sri Lanka. Perhaps, because she has been traveling around the world as a "refugee" she has not been in touch with what was happening in her imagined homeland.

Cannot she remember the truth that LTTE massacred hundreds of Muslim worshipers in two mosques in Eravur and Kattankudy in the Batticaloa District (Eastern Province) in 1990? Cannot she remember the truth that innocent Sinhalese villagers were hacked to death by machetes and swords by the LTTE throughout this nasty civil war in the Eastern and Northern Provinces? Could not she remember the truth that nearly 100,000 Muslims were evicted from their homes at gunpoint in the Northern Province by the LTTE in 1990?

Muslims were given only 72 hours (in many cases only 24 hours) notice to vacate their historical habitats and were not allowed to take their furniture or consumer durables along with them. Was not the massacre at the mosques genocide? Was not the forcible eviction of Muslims from the north ethnic cleansing?

"Tamil civilians do not have the right to speak or right to think, right to live," so goes celebrity untruths of M.I.A. who has not even visited Sri Lanka in the past 25 years or more to make this sweeping claim. I myself (a Tamil from Northern Sri Lanka) have been criticising the Sri Lankan government on matters of economic policies, human rights violations by the security forces, corruption, transparency and accountability of public finances, etc. in public forums such as the media. Of course, I am fortunate to be still alive, but not many other critics of the government are, particularly media personnel, in the past three years. These excesses by the security forces are nowhere near a genocidal situation.

Whether M.I.A. wins the Grammy and/or the Oscar or not, M.I.A., an epitome of the art of deception by some impervious and insular Tamils among the diasporas, deserves a naattu patrallar (person affectionate to the country or patriot) award from the demon god of the Wanni.

In any event, poor civilians caught up in this vicious civil war would have never heard of M.I.A. or hi-hop music, nor are they interested. This kind of celebrity untruths will boomerang on the worldwide Tamil community as liars of the first order. Even the actual truths will be construed as untruths or at least suspected by the international community.

As an ethnic Tamil myself, on the one hand I am proud of M.I.A. being nominated for the Grammy and Oscar Awards, on the other hand I am disgraced by her blatant lies on television on behalf of "all Tamils" in Sri Lanka (and beyond), whereas nobody has given her permission to represent all Tamils.

As a learned person I have bit of advice for M.I.A. and the like, members of Tamil diasporas around the world; "It is preferable to tell the truth, small in its dimensions, than a large lie artfully embellished. " (Ernesto 'Che' Guevara, 1985, Guerrilla Warfare, Manchester: University Press, pp146).

"SKIP SHELLING/BOMBING"

Chinthana4Lions said...

you can see the shell goes slowly and hits the water and looks like it bounce back in to air ASAP kinda sometimes?

Bro, this is indeed possible from a Hydrodynamic point of view, and has been practiced intentionally in the past in warfare.

It is an often used technique in bombing ships at near the waterline from aircraft, and is called "skip bombing" (see below for text of an article from Wikipedia.org). Shells fired from artillery or ship guns can behave in the same way.

The idea is to make the shells or bombs hit the water at a very low angle to the water surface, so that it has a very low momentum normal to the water in the vertical direction, while most of its momentum is parallel to the water surface in the horizontal direction. The shell/bomb interacts with the surface to depress the water surface sufficiently: 1. to raise the water around it and generate a hydrostatic pressure under the shell, and 2. to create an inertial dynamic pressure from the inertial acceleration of the water underneath it. This creates sufficient dynamic pressure underneath the shell/bomb surface acting on its surface, to prevent further penetration of the surface by the shell/bomb and to reverse its vertical momentum. When the vertical momentum is reversed, it now proceeds "reflected upwards" by the surface at an angle of reflection approximately equal to the original angle of incidence on the surface. That is, the shell/bomb path is almost like a light beam reflected off a mirror surface. This works as long as the vertical momentum component is small enough not to completely nonlinearly disrupt the plane surface of the water, and prevent a "specular" reflection by the surface.

This method of "skip bombing" was used in WW-II against Japanese and German ships by the US Air force to hit the ships near the waterline and cause them to sink, with minimal expenditure of bombs compared to demolishing the superstructure of the ship. It was also used by the British to destroy massive dams of reservoirs in Germany by hitting the dam at its foot on the downstream side, where it will exploit the force exterted by the water pressure on the upstream side to cause catastrophic collapse of the dam by rapid dynamic fracture propagation from the blast hole. The movie "The Dam Busters" was based on the first of these British missions.

By firing artillery guns at a flat trajectory to cause the shell to skip along the surface, you can create more damage and sink a ship/boat than if you hit its superstructure to demolish above water level structures and/or cause a fire. The ultimate goal of sinking an enemy ship can be more directly achieved by "skip shelling," but that level of accuracy of artillery fire is not easily achieved when one, or both, of the attacking gun, and the target, are moving at the same time.

Wikipedia.org Article on Skip Bombing
Skip bombing was a low-level bombing technique refined for use against Imperial Japanese Navy warships and transports by Major William Benn of the 63rd Squadron, 43rd Bomb Group (Heavy), 5th Air Force, United States Army Air Forces in the Southwest Pacific Area theatre during World War II. General George Kenney has been credited with developing skip bombing.[1][2]

The first time skip bombing was used was at the base of Rabaul on New Britain. The United States 5th Army Air Force used B-25 bombers to attack and destroy Japanese ships. It proved to be very effective and received growing popularity. The only drawback was that it took a large amount of skill to perfect. Sometimes the bombs would detonate too soon, or in some cases, sink.[3]

The bombing aircraft flew at very low altitudes (200 to 250 feet above sea level) at speeds ranging from 200 to 250 miles per hour. They would release a "stick" of two to four bombs, usually 500- or 1,000-pound bombs equipped with four- to five-second time delay fuses at a distance of 60 to 300 feet from the side of the target ship. The bombs would "skip" over the surface of the water in a manner similar to stone skipping and either bounce into the side of the ship and detonate, submerge and explode under the ship, or bounce over the target and explode as an air burst. All outcomes were found to be effective. Unlike the Upkeep drum-shaped bomb developed by the British for use against German dams in WWII, this technique used standard bomb types.

Various aircraft types were used for skip-bombing attacks, including B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers, B-25 Mitchell medium bombers, and A-20 Havoc attack bombers. These were supported by heavily-armed Royal Australian Air Force Bristol Beaufighters, which would suppress Japanese antiaircraft fire with their machine guns and autocannons. Soviets used lend-leased A-20 Havoc and P-40 Tomahawk as well as Il-2 sturmoviks (also used for air defence suppression). Skip bombers were often used by aviation of North Sea Fleet in combination with torpedo bombers (usually the same A-20, skip bomber and torpedo bomber operated in pair). Skip bombers were called "topmachtoviks" (топмачтовики) in Russian, because they were flying "at the level of ship mast tops".

A notable use of this technique was during the Battle of the Bismarck Sea (March 2 – March 4, 1943), off the northern coast of New Guinea.

Normal people were never his audience; it was academic people but even many of them were unable to understand what he says.

He was branded as a sinhala racist and mostly its sinahlese rejected him even without listening to him saying he is racist.

I haven't seen so far any one countering his arguements.

We live in a time where a sinhalese is reluctant to introduce himself as a sinhalese. (Well, we are SL citizens but sinhalese as well.) Ironically, those who reject 'sinhalas' talk about 'tamils'.

[I have played against Thilan Samaraweera. He was an spin bowler at school either from Ananda or Nalanda. Not much of a good bat from memory.]

Priyasantha,

Good bat's life has more weight than bad bat? In your tone, he is expendable. Your timing of analysis is wrong when someone is injured through foul play.

Please stop shedding crocodile tears for civilians. Start blood letting for LTTE.

Please say what exactly in your mind:

"Let the LITE continue the genocide of Tamils"

What a world! Everything is upside down downside up.

Right side Left, Left side right.

In these terms, Mother Theresa and Mahatma Gandhi should be terrorists. If not LTTE-ers have to be terrorists!

What a world!

Do objects still fall down?

How about in Wanni?

Do they fall up in Wanni?

Is even Sun God's Physics must be different from Physics of nature.

Finally LTTE is decided to fight from No Fire Zone Ah.

Attack on SL Cricket team show resemblence of Mumbai Terror attacks.

May be Indian ROW agency behind the attack.

Main points of NDS video:

SL Tamils are 350 years old.
Tamil separatist maniacs have spoiled good Tamils.
Origin of the conflict is lack of respect to Sinhalese Buddhist culture by some Tamils and refusing to accept it.

Solution: One nation, one God, one language, and one culture just like in America without affecting minorities.

@ Thusitha,

Just read many comments over the news Australia link... and LTTE is all over the place..

as one said there...

"Or is this another party with vested interestes (like the LTTE) trying to kill two birds with one stone? They are at war with the Sri Lankan govt and they hate Pakistan for providng military assistance to SL govt. This hurts both their enemies."

possible....!
