Danger of LTTE taking the fight to civilian safe zone

Latest military reports indicate that the LTTE could have a fighting force of around 2,000 cadres, majority of whom are those forcibly recruited during the Cease-Fire and paraded before the media under such names as "RPG Commandos", "Leopard Commandos" and "Black Tigers".

Sources indicate that these cadres are fighting largely out of fear and are ready to flee every chance they get. Their morale is low but are unfortunately trapped by hardcore cadres and are afraid to surrender to the Army due to brainwashed mistrust in the SLA. However, the Army recently discovered families of LTTE martyrs among the civilians who had escaped to the government's side.

The major concern now is whether the fighting, which is concentrated mainly in and around Puthukudirippu and Ampalavanpokkanai could shift to the civilian safe zone as the Tigers run out of places to retreat. These areas start just north of Mulaitivu Town as one crosses the Wattuwan Bridge in Mulaitivu north.

Areas like Mullaivaikkal, Vellamullaivaikkal, Mathalang and Puthumathalang are designated civilian safe zones. These areas continue to be used for military purposes by the LTTE in complete disregard for civilian safety. Even the agents of a powerful multilateral humanitarian agency recently revealed that the two Zlin 143s involved in the aerial suicide mission on Colombo had taken off from near a civilian settlement along a stretch of beach at Mullaivaikkal in the designated civilian safe zone.

Meanwhile ground sources confirmed to DefenceWire that it was the 53 Division which had reached the Puthukudirippu built-up though the Commander of the 58 Division was quoted by the media as saying it was the 58 which had first breached the PTK built-up.

As our Foreign Secretary said, this attack won't damage our relationship with Pakistan.

We will let the authorities in respective countries to investigate and find out who is behind the attack.

The lesson we should learn from this is that terrorists have the ability to attack anywhere any place they wish. We have to be prepared.

As Gringo said, this is a good day to round up all the LTTE infiltrators and weed out the South.

It is reported that LTTE is active in Wilpattu again (perhaps about 40 of them). Similarly there are few in the Eastern jungles, and the newly liberated Mulative jungles. We need to smoke them out as well.

Wipe them out.. wipe them out!

In a terrorist attack reminiscent of the Mumbai attacks, 6 Sri Lankan cricket players were lightly injured while a third umpire was critically injured while on their bus. The incident took place outside the Qaddafi Stadium in Lahore, the capital of Pakistan's Punjab province. Five people have been confirmed dead from the security detail. While the Mumbai attack showed confusion and cowering Indian security forces, the Pakistani reaction, in contrast was swift, taking casualties but effectively repulsing an organized and surpise attack.

The attack was well organized and involved two bomb blasts followed by small arms firing. While five security guards were killed and several injured, the security forces managed to repulse the attack. The attackers numbered 12 and came on motorcycles, fired indiscriminately and then fled, leaving back ammunition bags and weapons. The firing continued for about 25 minutes.

Bags of ammunition was left in front of Al-Fatah store in neighborhood of Gulberg. Weapons left behind included 84mm Carl Gustav recoiless rifles, controversially a standard issue weapon to the Indian Army, a weapon not typically found with the Taliban.

Carl Gustavs are of Swedish origin and exported to the Indian army and never exported to the Mujahideen. RPG-22 rocket propelled anti-tank grenades, another standard issue for the Indian special forces (and another weapon less typical for the Taliban who more typically prefer RPG-7s) was also used. A senior defense correspondent, while remaining anonymous, states that the choice of weapons as well as other evidence, clearly indicates India's hand in the present attack and is being seen as a "response" to the Mumbai attacks.

Terrorist attacks perpetrated by RAW have many previous precedents but given the present sensitivities and the Indian reaction to the Mumbai attacks, they could prove to be a catalyst for heightened tensions between the two belleaguered neighbors.

Sri Lankan cricketers Kumar Sangakkara, Ajantha Mendis, Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Paranavithana received minor wounds. The Third Umpire is seriously injured and The cricket team has been recalled by Sri Lanka in light of these attacks.

Gavin Scovell, a sports producer and a witness to the attacks applauded the security detail for their rapid and calm response. In a press release, he stated:

"The guards were brilliant. They weren't panicking. They were very calm," Scovell said. "It must have been a terrifying experience, but they handled it well."

Meanwhile, two unidentified bodies have been found but it has not been released yet if these are of the attackers or of civilians.

Some time ago recently I met 4 Indian air line pilots here and one of them is a Tamil from TN and he said then how sad they are that their leaders are interfering in the affairs of SL.All of them have been to Col. on flights and have gone with their families on holidays. They all said how friendly our people were. To day I got a call from this Tamil Pilot who just landed somewhere in the world and was distressed upon hearing about this attack while he was flying. He was extremely distressed as he is a very strong cricket fan. He is extremely friendly just as most of the Tamil Nadu citizens I have met and all of them condemn the terrorists in Sl and their leaders helping them for no other reasons than for corruption. All of them say that they(the politicians in TN) should devote their energies in affairs of Tamil Nadu where there’s so much neglect. I find these Tamils so friendly and you can see many such young in Malaysia and they truly despise these terrorists in SL giving all Tamils a bad name. I too have met a few Tamils from Mauritius who are truly angry with these terrorists and one of them even said that they are happy to know that one of our’kings’lived and died in their island which they have adopted him as their king. I found out that they were referring to Ehalapola Dissawa who lived and died there. None of them speak Tamil but speak English and French and they have Tamil names. Also there there’s another lot in a sugar growing island in the Carrabian where the terrorist lobby tried to settle and do some sort of smuggling and they were all evicted as they had no part with their fake struggle.

The South Asian countries should work together to eliminate terror and bring peace and prosperity to their peoples.

This region together with China was the industrial power house of the world even in the 18th century !

But the region failed to produce quality arms in sufficient number which the west did and the conquered the region just with that.

It is calculated that, for the west to recover from current economic crisis, the best thing to do is to destroy the budding industrial infrastructure in the region.

We have LTTE, the agent of the west, trying to split India and SL. They are also trying to create chaos in the region with the help of Al-Quaida type terror outfits which were originally created by USA.

And to confound the things, it seems RAW is infested with LTTE agents.

If the Cricket team had been killed, it would have created a lot of resentment from us towards Pakistanis .. lack of appropriate security etc. This could have spoiled the great military co-operation that exists between Pakistan & SL.

The regional intelligence agencies must collaborate to weed out external threats ( Ex. Tamil Diaspora).

Whoever responsible for this shooting, i think their target was to break ties between SL and Pakistan(this is only one possibility). Our leaders are not stupid to break ties with Pakistan in this kinda situation. Palitha Kohona mentioned in a phone interview that,(with NDTV i guess), this incident wouldn't break ties with Pak.

I thought the bus was the one next to the gunmen on the video, apparently it was a bigger one had some bullet holes in the front as well.

I was hoping to see spray of machine gun bullet holes and they were not there.

The media hasn't taken LTTE in to the front as suspects yet. They don't rule them out either.

- UNP: SL govt sent cricket team to the dangerous Pak, in order to obtain military supprt. So govt should go home.

- JVP: Govt officials spent xxx and yyy on safety calculations. Still terrorists attacked.

- Pussycats: two SL cricketers dead and 5 wounded on a deadly attack on SL team by MUSLIM terrorists

- Arujna: There was nothing wrong in touring in PAK. it was the fault of security evaluation of current board.

- Thilanga: Our cricketers are being risked by the previous and current cricket administrations

- Pramodya: Cricket has become life and death, players shud be given higher pay and insurance.

- Australia/England/SA/NZL: Pak has become too dangerous to travel. SL is also at closer proximacy to Pak, and Bangladesh was once a part of it. We will reconsider the tours in these countries. Notably India is not a risky place, and no change for all tours there and participation in IPL.

- ICC: [will list it for next board meeting in one year. Will start paying millions to this security evaluation firm who has no representative in Asia]

The evidence I see in media is highly indicative of the attackers' intent to kill SL players. Therefore, it is very likely that the attackers had a bone to pick with Sri Lanka or they were acting on behalf of some other party who had a bone to pick with SL. I am at a loss to believe that either India or Pakistan wanted to kill SL cricket players. I will give the investigation a few days to clarify the picture. As I stated above, with all due respect to my Indian friends, I am glad that this didn't happen in Mumbai. Otherwise we would have been mourning by now. It is the action of real battle hardened cops and commandos of Pakistan that saved the lives of SL cricket players together with the brave and sensible bus driver. This instance reminds me LTTE's attempt to take Pakistan High Commissioner Bashir Wali's life in Colombo and how our Commandos gave their lives to save the HC.

On a funny note, Ajantha Mendis could have handled the whole situation by himself alone if he had SL Army Special Forces training instead of Arty Gunner training. Still he could have provided good cover if he had the right weapon is his hands.

Sam, no offence taken. I am in shock that this could have happened. My hearfelt thanks that the SL team players are all safe.

I will suggest that comparing the first few days in Mumbai to what happened in Lahore and Colombo is unjustified.

1. Lahore and Colombo were single strikes against one target. The attackers were in the open all through.

Mumbai was about 6-7 simultaneous attacks in different parts of the city. By the time the forces reatced the killers had mostly holed up in covered locations. Those that didn't, were taken out.

2. Lahore and Colombo were examples where the protection was provided by governments for single high value targets, and by highly trained, specialist, defence teams.

Mumbai was - initially- a case of poorly trained 'beat constables', typical in South Asia, against highly armed killers. I challenge most local constabularies, trained as they are for 'policing', to do much better.

Whether the response could have been better once the Indian special forces go into the game, can be debated.

Very interesting to hear that Pakistani captain decided not to leave with the SL team the last minutes. Was he given instructions to do so?

As an example, if they succeded in killing SL team, It would be good for the USA so that they can attack islamic militants. Same is true for Pakistani Govt. if there intention was to Attack Muslims so they can get sympathisers.
Can't discount LTTE as they can prove they are all powerful and attack from anywhere. They might not take responsibility as the attack did not succeed.
RAW because they can continue to kill muslims in Kashmir.

Would be very interesting to see who did it in the end. But we would never know who were the pupet masters who autherize this attack.

At the end of the day, no matter you consider a house, a village, a city, a department, a company, a nation etc. you need a strong leader.

Sinhalese has not has the chance to establish that strong leadership until MR in the recent past.

Our leadership is still weaker when you compare with leaders like Obama.

This lack of Sinhalese leadership was the reason for Tamil uprising. If we had learned to whip the asses of trouble makers from earlier on, we wouldn't have created this mess.

From now onwards, we should make sure no minority or NGO or Western opinion dictate our governing of the nation.

Any NGOs working in Sri Lanka should be sent back to their own nations since we know none of them have helped us so far. You can see the mess they have created when you head North.

The way we govern ourselves has to come within.

After reading most of the materials related to yesterday shooting at Lahore; there is no doubt in my mind about India’s involvement in this abominable act.

It is not primarily to punish SL for undertaking the tour after India’s refusal to play with Pakistan but to discredit Pakistan government as well as deprive Pakistan Cricket Board from home series with any other countries and avenge Mumbai attacks too. They also slap SL cricket for not taking their advice not to tour Pakistan.

It is not a secret that Indian backed terrorists are operating in Pakistan soil and Pakistan backed terrorists are operating in Indian soil. The Lahore attack must be a dirty job of Indian terrorists who are operating heavily in Karachchi and Lahore. They have staged this attack carefully in such style to connect Mumbai and Lahore incidents together to discredit Pakistan.

Indians and their dirty politics are on the top again. Excellent Pakistan-Sri Lanka relation as at present is a sore thorn in Indians face and using covert operation to damage these relations could be the reason.

These are truly scary scenes... and we cannot thank enough to the president for his vision and determination. In the early 2000s... I thought our only option was to 'hire' a leader on contract from the International Management Market... in order to save Sri Lanka.

2. change the consitution to make life miserable for a president, MPs who are not working for the betterment of the country taking him as an example
3. ban racism, seperatism, terrorism, supporting these crap
4. change the election law to filtre out these shit.

Totally agree. It is very unlikely he will survive long. I can't beleive he is still alive. We need some one like him. Otherwise there would be a huge vacum when he is gone. Just like Rohana Wijeweera, Prabhakaran (Once he is gone). Otherwise we would be in Deep shit again. Since no one would be able to challenge MR, he should start grooming a successful leader ASAP as he has no fear of loosing his post.
Yeah, some one should publish this in one in a mainstream paper. We need to have a succession plan and we need to know who its going to be. God, please let it not be the current prime minister.

Sinhalese Buddhists didn't have any problem protecting the motherland for 2000 years; from King Dutugamunu to Weera Puran Appu.

After British era, with Olcott a new stream of buddhists (Olcott buddhists) emerged with knowledge of English language, western culture and science and they were in 'high' level social status. It is these people (and now most of them are marxists or 'former' marxists..listen to the guy at the end of yesterday NSD clip..) who oppose war saying buddhits can't kill. Vast majority of other buddhists (sinhala buddhists) do have common sense and also know buddhism.

this is exactly what happened in the 80's....

The Christian missionaries too genuinely fell for this trap and I know few here who now realizes that these minorities have taken them for a ride. This is the reason why most of the foreign Embassies employ them but they don’t understand they are hurting the local majority when contracts and employment are not fairly distributed Philippines have immensely benefitted by these bases in Subic bay and Clark’s AB resulting in may Philippines getting residency in US.I was told San Diego is full of them, one time employee at these bases.JVP might oppose this.

VoA they suspected could be used for spying on their southern nuclear and defense facilities.

This is the same reason they refused us acquiring 3D radar from China.

They also had a fear US will establish a base in Trinco.

This is partly true. Tamils have been told to seek shelter with Buddhists whenever they are in trouble. This was specially true in the Middle East.

When I asked about that from a Tamil lady married to a Sinhalese whether it is true or not, she confirmed.

She said Jaffna Tamils are the most opportunists (she was from Jaffna) than Eastern Tamil who's heart is bit warmer.

So my fellow friends, don't take Buddhism out of your house.

The fact that it took us this long to crack the code on how to defeat the LTTE has in my humble opinion nothing to do with us being a majority buddhist country....
Religion hardly,if at all is a factor...
what we lacked is astute and courageous political leaders and capable military commanders to come together for a common purpose(defeat LTTE)..
this did not happen until MR and SF crossed paths...
Think if Gen. Kobbakaduwa had the same courageous political masters..
we would have squished this fuckers long time ago....

the US declared "War on terror" foreign/defence policy helped us now as well...
But religion ... nah...
remember our Buddhist monks have been the most vociferous critics of the LTTE from the very begining...
That explains why LTTE butchered so many of our monks..

I think US doesn’t need VOA to spy on India as there are much better methods available to them. They might want Trinco as the future threat to them might come in the Middle East, Iran Afghanistan and even Pakistan.Trinco is at an ideal distance for their operations. I doubt that US will ever fall behind countries like China and India or even Russia as their infrastructure and mainly educational institutions so well established will keep them ahead of others and with the defeat of our labour government this time might put UK back to it former self. I can vouch for UK’s ability given the correct party at the helm.

It took us that long since we did not have the backbone to go after Terrorists. We were lead to believe that there can be only a political solution and no other leader had the spine to totally declare the war against them. Remember, since were were depending on foreign aid, we were not allowed to buy weapons to kill Terrorists.

We were told negotiate, negotiate negotiate.

Some of the politicians used LTTE to cover up their inability to govern as well.

The Sinhalese who ruled Sri Lanka prior to MR was not quite Sinhalese enough to declare a war against LTTE.
They never wanted to mess up the relationships with Tamils who never cared about Sinhalese.

Even today some of the Sinhalese don't have the backbone to express themselves really fearing they will be called a Racist.

very true Kasthuri,
But Mahatthayas's importance has been over stated and exaggerated over the years I reckon...

it was only one reason, a small one. obviously, believing LTTE cooked-up BULLSHIT was the MAIN reason followed by incompetency.

JRJ's "beliefs" led him to cut down the move by a great lankan thinker to produce guns and bullets in SL. would have been fcuking good for a start.

ppl generally hate killing no matter what the reason is. the death penalty was scrapped by SWORD's "beliefs". gradually the severity of punishment also followed a downward trend.

all our leaders tried really hard to sort things out peacefully even when LTTE showed no compassion.

etc, etc.

other societies with different "beliefs" were VERY quick to use extreme violence.

කස්තුරි..Kasthuri said...

Jack1234,

Mahattaya was very popular figure among senior cadres of LTTE prior to his demis. He was the deputy leader and had over 500 loyalists. Most of them were systematically eliminated by Prbhakaran after killing mahattaya.

That is the starting point of disintegration of LTTE. After mahattaya’s demis only Karuna became deputy to Prabha and given full control over eastern region. This corrupted Karuna beyond his responsibilities and defected just before, he got killed by LTTE.

So Karuna’s defection and loss of eastern region is initiated by mahattaya killing. Even Anton Balasingham and his wife Adele tried to stop Prabha from killing mahattaya but failed.

SLA got good intelligence and material support from mahattaya and Karuna loyalists

Moshe Dyan said...

it was not quite karuna's split that helped us but HOW we used it.

if RW ponnaya was there he would have killed them all just to please the LTTE. in fact there was a clause in the CFA to disarm "para-military" groups. LTTE named TMVp as a paramilitary group.

කස්තුරි..Kasthuri said...

A bit About R Premadasa and what he did; you decide who he was

In 1989 elections, R Premadasa became the second executive president of Sri Lanka. Soon after popular and able Lalith Athulathmudali amd Ganini Dissanayake was side lined and Ranjan wijeratne and Sirisena cooray were given high portfolios by the president.

He also overlooked Lalith and Gamini to appoint inert Wijethunga as the prime minister. On March 2, 1991, the Deputy Minister of Defence and the General Secretary of the UNP, Ranjan Wijeratne, was killed by a LTTE suicide bomber.

Plotting with the assassination of Lieutenant-General Denzil Kobbekaduwa, the secret transfer of weapons to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) by President Premadasa were not secrets to the sub sequent commission of inquiry. Also, the evidence given by the army deserter turned witness Wisva Kumara has been extensively discussed in dealing with the Commission of Inquiry into the assassination of Kobbekaduwa and nine others at Araly Pont, Kayts on August 8, 1992.

The commission also found that superior officers of the army, Special Task Force (STF) and persons who held executive and administrative positions in Premadasa's government, namely General Sepala Attyagalle, Secretary of Defense, K H J Wijedasa, Secretary to the President, Brigadier Bohoran of the army, Lionel Karunasena and Sahabandhu and Commandant and the Deputy Commandant of the STF and a host of other officers have all admitted and confirmed both in their testimony of the witness Wisva Kumara, to the fact that arms and ammunition, including 6mm RPG guns, mortars, self loading rifles, 400, T81 automatic rifles, T56 automatic rifles, pistols, hand grenades, ammunition and equipment for all communications sets etc and other components of modern warfare were given to the LTTE.

Tear gas rifles, tear gas, signal flames, pistols, finger cups, etc and hand-held integrated circuits, SG 700 car antennas, video cassettes, boot mounts, tilting boot mounts pipe mounts etc were also passed on. Furthermore, the LTTE ordered the import of numerous items, such as well drilling machines, radios, cables, mobile sets, head phones, microphones, batteries, amplifiers and water purification tablets which were imported and addressed to Defence Secretary General Sepala Attyagala, c/o A S Balasingham of the LTTE. The duty on these imported items was paid by the Defence Ministry.

Money was also secretly given to the LTTE in 1989 and in 1990. Weapons were given from Government stocks, from armouries, specially imported for the purpose of usage of the air force, army, navy and STF on the orders of the President, ostensibly to crush the Tamil National Army, thought to be fostered by the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF), and through that the IPKF was able to read the intentions and the signals of the Sri Lankan Government and would leave the country.

On 11 June 1990, the LTTE surrounded the police stations in the Batticaloa and Amparai police divisions and asked the police to surrender and they would transport them to Amparai. The Government asked the police to act with restraint. Some police officers were prepared to hold their positions and fight and requested Artillery and Air support. Later that day IGP (Inspector General Police) informed that such a support was not available. The police were asked to surrender. They did so believing that they would be transported to Sinhala areas. In some stations LTTE opened fire and police officers were killed.

The LTTE entered all stations breaking open the gates and fences, broke open the armories and took all weapons and ammunitions. In the Amparai district the police officers were herded into vehicles and then taken to Kanchikudicahiaru jungles and shot dead.

Meantime, Luxman Perera, Member of the Municipal Council (MMC) wrote a play using the title "Me -Kawuda – Karanne Monawada?" (Who is he - What is he doing?).

Luxman Perera's drama was meant to be a satire on the Premadasa's administration. Luxman Perera joined hands with journalist and media man Richard Soyza.

A few days before the first performance of the drama, a van without a number plate arrived at Luxman's home at night and took him away. He disappeared. He was presumed dead. It was rumoured that Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ronnie Gunasinghe was responsible for the abduction and murder of Luxman and Richard Soysa.

On August 30, 1991, Athulathmudali, Premachandra and Gamini Dissanayake were sacked from the UNP by the Working Committee of the Party to get killed later by either LTTE or our own gangs sponsored by the state.

mate, have to disagree.

MR was the opposition leader by majority PA vote. JVP had no choice but join with the PA.

had the parliament not dissolved, things would have been VERY easy for MR. he would be the SLFP candidate backed by the JVP in 2005. it would have been after the tsunami, karuna-prabha fun times, massive fuel price hikes, etc. which would have been shit for the UNP.

i speculate in that event MR should have won with close to 60% vote and immediately dissolved the parliament and got a strong govt too.

the greed of the UNP in 2001 costed them the 2005 election and the greed of SLFP in 2004 costed them a strong parliament and almost the 2005 election.

We already know all about Peter and his journey to Sri Lanka to find his lost aunty. He is trying to get us upset, but if you think about it there's no need. Cricket players were slightly hurt but none were seriously injured or killed- no harm was really done and there was no "lesson for moda Lanka" for participating in the match. If the Paks want another match on their turf, we'll give them a good one.

Peter and his fellow travelers on the other hand are hopefully learning a far more fundamental lesson on the foolishness of starting a war that cannot be won. Hopefully he will explain to us why no one in the world is paying attention to the "genocide" in the Vanni- not even with these TN & diaspora halfwits barbecuing themselves (there's another question for Pete to answer- why nobody in Tamileelam is setting themselves on fire?).

Alas, it would be too much to expect Pete to generate the modicum of intellect to figure that out. A Sivaram he is truly not (and it is only now that I realize what a crime we committed by getting rid of Taraki).

The equal rights for tamils has to come from Tamils. The caste system in Tamils is the one that is depriving the rights of the tamil massess.

Second is willingness to give what you ask for (or what you already get). While Tamils live in Colombo, kandy and Galle and study in Colombo schools and in uiversities, and conduct business, the Sinahalese and Muslims should have the ability to do the same in Jaffna and Mullathivu.

We Sinahalese have always given and continue to give all communities equal rights. But we cannot give parts of this country to satisfy statehood dreams of any other community or any ethinic group.

Mahinda is wise enough not to pay attention to Mushe, but he is not the architect of Sri Lanka's victory. That credit goes to Gotabhaya and Sarath Fonseka- if Mahinda did not have these two, he would not have achieved the current victory and Sri Lanka would be in a real mess.

The proof for this will be demonstrated after the war is won and Mahinda will have to deal with running the country without a war or the LTTE to occupy people's attention.

For the 2 days the Pakistan Team and the Sri Lankan Team went for training together. However on the third day or the day of the attack, the pakistan team said they would join later. How come your pakistani brothers are willing to scarifice your buddisht lives to safeguard their own arses.

It looks like its another crushing and humuliating defeat for Mahindha. He prostituted your cricket players so that he will get favours and weapons from Pakistan. Today they are suffering because of this.

Prabha likes cricket as it is rumoured. The LTTE till today has used the cricket match times to launch attacks but never attacked the team. Its so much easier in Sri Lanka to do so then in Pakistan.

Even B.Raman is trying to put a spin that the LTTE might have used their pakistani accuqantence for this. His spin also comes out almost immediately. Hence it may actually be a plan to immediately draw attention away from RAW. The sad bad is after being humuliated by the LTTE by not adhering to the battle plans he laid out, he know feels he needs revenge. Unfortunately he forgot the new zeeland team was attacked in pakistan 3 years ago and they were lucky they were in the hotel when the suicde bomber went off.

It serves Indian dual purpose to potray pakistan as a terrorist state and also justify why the Indian team should not go there.

Hum Re-Pays An Old Debt To LTTE In Lahore?
http://www.southasiaanalysis.org/papers31/paper3081.html

Regardless of the Indian involvement, its obvious that the Sri Lankan team was choosen by the pakistanis because, one you are insignifcant as a country, secondly the dead would generally be buddisht who are non hindu and no muslim. Hence who cares if they die in south asia except for your people of course.

The outcome of this action would also come as a warning for the sri lankan goverment and its people.

This also brings me to a point of the LTTE under Prabha brought about by Puligal blogspot. If the LTTE is not sole represntative of the tamils, then self imotalaitation overseas could easily turn into attacks against sri lankan entities overseas. This would be unabated and uncontrolled.

As much as the people of eelam get killed, raped and humuliated on a daily basis by the government of sri lanka, i do not think that since colonial rule, regardless of the differences, sports has always been a uniting factor. People of both countries have often forgotten their national differences when they play for their schools etc. In the years following eelam's independnece it would be good for both countries unlike india and pakistan to behave civily and conduct their "cold wars" on the cricket pitch or rugby feild.

with equal rights must come equal responsibilities.

the problem is lacking responsibilities especially from tamils towards SL.

the other tricky thing is equal rights should be for each individual (not community). so obviously a larger community will have more rights than a smaller community. this is normal.

SL should seriously consider cutting down rights of those who cannot bear responsibility. in other words giving all the rights to an irresponsible person is dangerous.

e.g. seperatists may not have the right to contest elections

e.g. terrorists may not have the right to life!!!

Wijayapala,

Your post make me go back a while:

"It is now generally accepted that the conduct of modern warfare is not only about troops, weapons, generals and battlefields - it is also about perceptions. The manner in which a war is perceived by states and their populations today can have a strategic impact on its conduct. Real time images of a battlefield, flashed round the world can shape strategic decisions about the war and the mindset of one's strategic allies. For many years, the role of media as an indispensable component of modern war making has been conceptualized and discussed in military journals and symposia as the "CNN effect. Analyses in LTTE journals and the tenor and content of discussions that Pirapaharan has had with some foreign media consultants in recent years clearly indicate that the Tigers have been making an extensive study of the "CNN effect". .."

What you are written about Premadasa is interesting and we will read in the morning.
Before I sign off to work I have a joke about Premadasa that was going around the hill capital. It goes like this.
A kattadiya had said to Premadasa that his job will be taken by a person named Wije, having sleepless nights he began to look for this wije.
First he thought it could be Upali Wijewardena and he was dealt with.
Still the Kattadiya was saying this wije would take over his job then he began to look again and got rid of Wije kumaratunge, still the Kattadiyya was still going on of this wije and he started looking for this Wije and he thought he found that person in Wijeweera and he was history, but eventually when he was killed by the terrorists and he was succeeded by Wijethunge.
Contrary to what you guys says only brave politicians during that time were DB Wijethunge who unleashed the army under Algama and the STF on the terrorist in the East,Almost wiping them out.Ranjan too was brave enough call them terrorist and ordered them to lay down the arms, but Premadasa was not brave enough to call the people who murdered people terrorists and when his friend Thevis Guruge was killed he referred to the killers as unknown people, never referred to them as terrorists. I was there right through defending my plantation and business where I lost respect to our people or authorities who were cowards where a little chit by a kid was enough to close the houses, shops and even Police stations and I am grateful to the JVP to highlighting this weakness as I had the privilege to talk about it with Denzil who was at that time was in a camp in Polonnaruwa.

Kasthuri,

"After mahattaya’s demis only Karuna became deputy to Prabha and given full control over eastern region."

This is not exactly true- Karuna had been the Batticaloa/Ampara commander since 1987, he was the longest-serving LTTE district commander. He functioned quite independently from Mahattaya, the Vanni district commander who rose to prominence after Kittu left the scene.

Karuna was never appointed as Thalaivar's deputy. That position remained vacant after Mahattaya was deposed and executed. Arguably, Karuna was Thalaivar's unofficial deputy because of the clout he wielded (demonstrated by his participation in the "peace process").

Things went wrong after Vanni flunkies like Pottu Amman, Nadesan, and Thamilenthi got jealous of Karuna's independence and tried to centralize things. They called him to task for corruption, truly a joke given how the obese poruppalars (LTTE commissars) skimmed from the "liberation struggle," and the rest is history.

Same thing happened incidentally with KP, the LTTE's arms broker. KP's operation was incredibly crooked with him pocketing a lot of Peter's life savings (should have saved that for aunty), but like Karuna KP got the job done and that is what should have mattered. Sadly, Thamilselvan and Castro would have none of this and stripped the poor sod of his responsibilities, leading to all those arrests in the US, UK, and France and episodes like the Jeyadevan story.

"A bit About R Premadasa and what he did; you decide who he was"

Premadasa for all his faults got the Indians out of Sri Lanka, just as Mahinda (thanks to Gota) is getting the LTTE out. We all hate Premadasa largely for things that happened after the IPKF left- at the time, helping the LTTE fight the Indian invader appeared to be a good idea. Similarly Mahinda's legacy will probably be more determined by what he does after the LTTE departs and other issues take priority.

/Pakistan's cricketers came within a whisker of being caught up in the terrorist attack in Lahore this morning and owed their near-miss to a last-minute change of plan, according to the team's coach. Intikhab Alam said that the captain, Younis Khan, decided not to leave for the stadium at the same time as the Sri Lankans as they had previously.

According to Alam, both teams usually departed together at about 8:40am, but that did not happen this morning. "The Sri Lankans decided to leave five minutes early today and our captain had decided we would go separately," he said.

Alam said that the Pakistani players only came to know about the attack when they reached the nearby Mall road. They immediately returned to the hotel. "It was a terrifying incident and we sat down together worried about the Sri Lankan players' safety," he said. "We have been in touch with the Sri Lankan players and officials and we have done our best to show them our support."

He added that it was a black day in the history of Pakistan cricket, but insisted that the Pakistan Cricket Board should continue to try to convince other international teams that it was safe to tour the country.

"This could have happened anywhere in the world but we need to continue our efforts to convince teams it is safe to come and play in our country," he said.

A senior Pakistan board official has urged the international cricket community not to isolate the country following the attack. "I will only say what happened today is a great tragedy," the Pakistan Cricket Board's director of human resources, Wasim Bari, said.

"But at a time when terrorist attacks are taking place all over the world, Pakistan cricket should not be abandoned or isolated."

The former Test captain said he was greatly encouraged by statements coming out of Sri Lanka that they did not regret visiting Pakistan for the Test series and urged support rather than rejection.

"It is very easy now to just say 'let's stop going to Pakistan'," he added. "But we need the support of the international cricket community. We can still hold international matches. Terrorists have tried to hit cricket targets in other countries as well."/

Couldnt find a stronger word that Gruesome to describe the happenings in Lahore yesterday.Thank God all the cricketer's are safe.

Was glued to the TV all day long as all the channels showed clips of gunmen firing \ moving positions etc

Lots of conspiracy theories doing the round and Pakistan will have to get to the bottom of this incident to get the facts out.

3 suspects immediately come to mind in the aftermath of this incident.

1>Rogue elements in Pak's defence services - ISI or the Army who want to fish in troubled waters
2>Indian angle - India wanting to expose to the world about Pakistan and also sour the relations between Pak and GoSL
3>LTTE using its connection with Pak based outfits to strike at the willpower of GoSL \ Taliban based militia striking.

In my opinion the First and Second options, dont hold much ground.
Because,
1>Armed forces want to use the existing political turmoil in Pak.In anycase,it appears soon the military will take charge in Pak.They wouldnt have wanted such a controversy now.Entire World is looking at Pakistan with lots of worry and that is something the military establishment could have done away with.God forbidden, had something serious happened to any of the cricketers,Pakistan would have paid a very very heavy price for it.

2>Indian connection - India or RAW should be completely dumb to carry out a operation of such magnitude in Pakistan.India has completely tightened the screws on Pakistan diplomatically post 26/11.Why should India do anything that would release the pressure on Pakistan or make it fall from its high ground.People can argue it was a revenge operation. But definitely not on a High profile target like the Sri cricket team. The ramifications would have been too much had something gone wrong.Getting one guy like India did with Kasab and then India would have to dance to Pak's tunes just like Pak did now.More importantly the isolation that Pak faces in IC post 26/11 would have been turned back.India moved its cards very well to get Pak into the current position in IC.Why would they present a opppurtunity on a Golden platter to make Pak escape from it?

3>The third suspect are the Tigers\Taliban backed militia. One thing that struck me immediately as soon as the clippings came on TV yesterday was "These guys are not shooting to Kill".They were at very close range and had grenade's,RPG's and 2 cars laden with explosives.12 of them on a Fidayeeen attack could wreck havoc. But it was not the case.Their intentions clrealy seemed to take hostages ala the Munich Olympics scenario.Luckily for Srilankan team, their bus driver was alert enough and that saved them.Again, was it done by LTTE or was it done by the numerous Taliban backed militia we have to wait to know. But taking hostages would have meant the Pak govt would have bent over backwards to get them released.A hostage situation could have helped the Tiger's as well. But if this situation is true, then the ISI definitely would be fuming just like RAW did in the early 90's.For rogue they maybe, but ISI would never do something that would damage Pak in the IC.

The worrying point is 12 of those attackers went scot free after being in the public \ media glare for 15 long minutes.Thats pathetic and so is the security given to the Srilankan cricket team. Moreover this incident occured even after the route to Gaddafi stadium was changed in the morning.Pak has lot of questions to answer and hope they conduct a thorough investigation to get the cowards who launched these attacks.

It is very difficult to analyse the Indian factor in SL.Because of the Tamil Nadu politics and our terrorists’ influence with TN politicians. To be at peace with TN where Mrs Nehru had much support for congress party in TN she was compelled to allow the tigers to be given facilities there.
I remember the day we sat at the VIP table with General Artygalle at a function in London where a high official of the Indian govt invited himself to the function where one of our mates tagged along with me to listen to him as there was a general concern about the Parripu drop. I think he was from the RAW. He explained to us the obligation the central govt had to TN politics and he seems to appreciate Gamini Dissanayake like Ranil he seems to shuttle back and forth with Delhi. I think they realized the predicament of the Indian Central govt and it implication on us.
This special relationship was noted when Rajiv visited Colombo where at a presentation of guests to him he shook hands with all the guests in line that includes Gamini Dissanayake and after passing him he comeback and again shook his hand and pattered him at the back as if he was very special to Rajive. If we remember in answer to this undue interference from the TN Gamini was tasked to spear head the mighty Mahwali project where much employment was given to many Tamils in the East as well as to some Sinhalese and Muslims. He was winning the hearts and minds of the neglected Tamils who came to our fold, where I had the privilege of going to Bati and Trinco where we were entertained by the Tamil friends, where I manage to sponsor three Tamil kids in Trinity while the parents were sent to middle East. This development made people like Karuna,VP and another tiger leaders mad a leader named Karikallan conveyed his displeasure to the people working there.Gamini was made a target for getting down the Indians and doing the Mahavally project and settling Sinhalese and Muslim people there. I think VP didn’t like Gamini and Rajiv for this and was made history as uplifting the living standards of Tamils would have alienated the separatist cause, the reason for killing Rajiv and Gamini. There was a nasty campaign against Gamini by them saying that he had accumulated vast sums in UK and Australia. This is happening in SL where a national icon is being brought down by mere speculation and business leaders are in remand bringing chaos in our business circle with a confidence issue at the same time the clever tiger lobby had regained the FASTCASH trade depriving the much needed foreign exchange at this crucial time where all these FC outlets are now closed and our leaders are disgraced and locked up.For the sake of these problems MR must reign in RW who can get foreign aid to develop the island with the IT and other trimmings and keep the central govt of India happy and control the TN factor and JVP guys to be in charge of the rural areas of South. Time for party politics must be discarded for the sake of the country’s future.

Sri Lanka owes much to Pakistan for its help in supplying arms and military training to defeat the LTTE. However, the political situation in Pakistan is very tragic. All civilian governments in that country have been totally ineffective and corrupt. Also with a neighbor like India intent on destroying the state these regimes have not had the where withal to last very long.

A man who was in prison for twelve years and who has suffered persecution under a military and a civilian government (the previous Nawaz Sharif regime) is now head of state. His less than flattering nick-name is Mr. Ten-percent. Benazir Bhutto was resurrected by western regimes as an alternate leader when the west, specifically the US, felt that Musharaff was loosing popular support.

Zadari has been amenable to the west to which he owes his position. Some say he has been too servile to the west to the detriment of his country's own interests.

On Feb 13, Diane Feinstein, a Jewish-American U.S. senator from California dropped a bombshell. Ms. Feinstein, who happens to be Chairman of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee reveled to the world that U.S. drones that have been bombing Pakistan almost daily are actually operating from Pakistani airbases with the consent of the Pakistan government. This statement undermined any pretense the Pakistani Government was putting up that they had no control over the drone flights.

One of the mistakes Musharaff made was sending the army into the North West frontier when even the British had not done that during colonial times. Musharaff may have made many mistakes but his record on governance and corruption is much better than any civilian government in Pakistan. He picked for a Prime Minister and other top positions technocrats who held positions in the World Bank and other international organizations. Overall, I think, a military government is necessary for a country like Pakistan to survive.

I feel very sorry for the lives of the Pakistani guards who died defending our team.

However, I don't agree with your dismissal of the LTTE-RAW connection. Do you remember my thesis that there could be Rogue RAW Sub-groups still favoring the LTTE and the Greater Dravidian Nation agenda? These kinds of dirty tricks, to set Sri Lanka and Pakistan against one-another, was partly what I had in mind. This attempt will fail in doing that; I have no doubt.

"This was the worst idea, he should have let IPKF to finish the job by killing VP and his clan instead RP gave them rebirth with weapons and money."

I don't think IPKF had any intention of finishing the job or killing Thalaivar. Their goal was to "pressure" Thalaivar into their arrangement but no way he was going to do that. The evidence is that IPKF generals were talking about staying in SL for 10-20 years- they had no intention of leaving. I think Premadasa realized this which led to the alliance with LTTE.

Premadasa's big mistake though was trusting Thalaivar, and that cost him his life (R. Gandhi made the same mistake).

I understand your POV.Until investigation proceeds further,we can only consider the various possibilities.Lets wait and watch.

My thoughts were based on a simple query "Who gets the immediate maximum benifits on the success of a hostage situation"

I think the answer could be only Taliban based militia and LTTE.Not sure how the GoSL would have responded if those attackers succeeded in their mission, which I strongly belive was to take hostages.

Did rogue elements of RAW concour this attack,I am not really convinced as you are in this topic.I beg to differ on this. The stakes are much much higher and the fact that such operation was occuring in an environment completely hostile to RAW.One blip, like it happened in Mumbai when Kasab was caught alive,India and RAW would have lost the complete game they painstakingly built since 26/11.

My suspicion is strongly on Taliban based militia who are really hell bent on making Pakistan their new base since the US intervention in Afghanistant has eroded much of their base. Its not a secret that Tiger's have close relationship with Taliban - hope you remember Ramzi Yusuf entered the US with documents forged by Tigers.

Anyways,we have to wait and watch - but my fear is,will the current political turmoil in Pakistan allow a quick \ waterproof investigation.Unfortunately the answer seems to be NO

Ananda-USA said...

which I strongly belive was to take hostages.

You could be right! The taking of high-profile Sri Lankan hostages could very well have been the objective of the attack.

That is supported by the folowing observations:

1. They did not seem to want to kill the Sri Lankan cricketers

2. They could use the hostages either to rescue Prabakaran, or to demand a halt to completing the offensive against the LTTE. This is the LLTE's urgent need.

However, this still does not resolve the issue of who the party, or parties, assisting the LTTE could be.

Also, as you say, that may take a very long time to be disclosed, if ever.
