Danger of LTTE taking the fight to civilian safe zone

Latest military reports indicate that the LTTE could have a fighting force of around 2,000 cadres, majority of whom are those forcibly recruited during the Cease-Fire and paraded before the media under such names as "RPG Commandos", "Leopard Commandos" and "Black Tigers".

Sources indicate that these cadres are fighting largely out of fear and are ready to flee every chance they get. Their morale is low but are unfortunately trapped by hardcore cadres and are afraid to surrender to the Army due to brainwashed mistrust in the SLA. However, the Army recently discovered families of LTTE martyrs among the civilians who had escaped to the government's side.

The major concern now is whether the fighting, which is concentrated mainly in and around Puthukudirippu and Ampalavanpokkanai could shift to the civilian safe zone as the Tigers run out of places to retreat. These areas start just north of Mulaitivu Town as one crosses the Wattuwan Bridge in Mulaitivu north.

Areas like Mullaivaikkal, Vellamullaivaikkal, Mathalang and Puthumathalang are designated civilian safe zones. These areas continue to be used for military purposes by the LTTE in complete disregard for civilian safety. Even the agents of a powerful multilateral humanitarian agency recently revealed that the two Zlin 143s involved in the aerial suicide mission on Colombo had taken off from near a civilian settlement along a stretch of beach at Mullaivaikkal in the designated civilian safe zone.

Meanwhile ground sources confirmed to DefenceWire that it was the 53 Division which had reached the Puthukudirippu built-up though the Commander of the 58 Division was quoted by the media as saying it was the 58 which had first breached the PTK built-up.

Now they are heading towards Iranapalai.

We may see some more complete big guns of the LTTE by the evening.

Solution: One nation, one God, one language, and one culture just like in America without affecting minorities.

Cannot accept this. One nation is OK. Other things are not OK. I like to listen to NDS but he sometimes goes too far.

Thanks for the link to NDS story.

/Solution: One nation, one God, one language, and one culture just like in America without affecting minorities./

Not really. What NDS says is
1. Sinhala leaders and sinhala mass
2. Tamils leders and (tamil leaders)
should accept that the main component in the culture in SL is sinhala culture. Existence of other cultures accepted but the main culture is sinhala.

Example: After national speak, Obama says God bless only. MR should say theruwan sarani only.

Example: Karuna. He doesn't need police powers and sinhalese don't need to punish him.

# I think sinhala people themselves must take leadership in every front in SL in such a way this happens naturally. The issue here was by an external force (British) Tamils had proportionately more in every thing and they start losing it when British left.

---------------

That is true. Like Shiites in Iraq. As soon as Sadam goes, the majority Shiites take over the country. The way it should. Why do we have to satisfy Tamils. They should get things pro rata as the way it happens in all civilized nations.

For your kind, civilans including babies are nothing but essential cannon fodder to protect the terrorist leaders.

Now please dont give us the crap that civilians are staying back on their own will and that sort of bullshit.. Not event the western media which has been very sympethetic to your LTTE buys that story anymore

In terms of strengthening our economy, the best way is to INVEST into Sri Lanka, rather than just sending money (which of course better than not doing anything).

You need to bring your expertise and Money both for the country to go forward!

Also it kind of proves that India's decision to NOT to send was right;

I also think there is a RAW hand in it to resregard the Pakistan;

But Pakistan also should have brains to anticipate such an attck & given more security & prove to the world that it's a safe place for Sports;

Anyway Our players becoming victims of India & Pakistan problems is so sad;

May be india wants to break the relationship with Pakistan & Srilanka ;

We should be wise & make pakistan apology to ask for more military co-ordination between two contries without hurting india

Sri Lankan team management had asked well before the 2nd test to tighten security for them for the lahore test. Pls check below NDTV report on 26th Feb.

" Sri Lankan team management has asked for beefed up security during their stay in Lahore for the second Test following protests against disqualification of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his brother from contesting elections or holding public office.

PCB Sources said the Sri Lankan team manager Brendan Kuruppu has asked for a security update and also requested to beef up the security cover for the team in Lahore where the second Test is due to start from Sunday.

"But for the moment the Sri Lankans have complete faith in the arrangements being made by the board," the board official said.

Lahore is the stronghold of the Sharif brothers. After their disqualification by the Supreme Court, President Asif Zardari imposed governor's rule in Punjab province dismissing the Muslim League Nawaz group government headed by Nawaz Sharif's brother Shahbaz Sharif."

Attack on our cricketers cannot be from Taliban or Pakistani militants alone. I strongly smell LTTE hand on this. Either they financed it or they hired Indian terrorists operating in Pakistan soil. There is a remote chance of LTTE cadres that do various type of manures in south India went to Pakistan to do this.

The attack is not typical Taliban operation; it bears the hallmark of LTTE operation. SLA should speed up its operation against LTTE regardless to out cry by Indians and IC. WE must kill all remaining terrorists of LTTE including its entire leadership.

I would like to f**k personally anybody who touch our cricketers.

George Binoy: Terror struck at the heart of cricket when masked gunmen attacked the bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team to the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Five cricketers, including Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lankan captain, and his deputy Kumar Sangakkara, received minor injuries. The attack also left six security men and two civilians dead. Duleep Mendis, the Sri Lanka Cricket chief, said that they were "getting the team back [to Sri Lanka] today".

6:47 George Binoy: Sri Lankan team to be evacuated

Ijaz Butt, the PCB chief, has said the Test has been called off. Salman Tasheer, the Punjab governor, said a helicopter will soon evacuate the Sri Lankan players from Gaddafi stadium and take them to a nearby airbase from where the team will fly back to Sri Lanka.

The reserve umpire Ahsan Raza was also injured in the attack. Nadeem Ghauri, the TV umpire, who was traveling in a bus behind the Sri Lanka team bus said the firing continued for some time. He said the bus driver was critically injured in the attack.

Umpire Steve Davis, who was on the team bus, called the terrorist attack “terrible”. “I’m lost for words,” he said.

6:48 George Binoy: Team to take first available flight home

Sri Lanka's foreign secretary Palitha Cohona has confirmed that the team will return today. He said they hoped to take the first available flight. He said that six players were hurt and that the players were being evacuated from the stadium and taken to a safe play. He's praising the Pakistan authorities for their cooperation and is appalled that a sporting team has been targeted in this manner.
6:49 George Binoy: Samaraweera and Paranavitana most seriously hurt

Our sources tell us Samaraweera and Paravitarana were the ones most seriously injured and have been taken to hospital. they had shrapnel wounds in the chest and hamstring which have been dressed and they are doing fine.
6:50 George Binoy: BCCI, CA condemn attacks

The BCCI issued a release expressing its "sorrow and anguish over the dastardly attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team at Lahore. We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured cricketers, and sympathize with their families and compatriots.

Cricket Australia chief executive officer James Sutherland said Australian cricket was shocked to hear the news. "Australian cricket has many friends in Sri Lanka and in Pakistan and we sincerely hope they are all safe after this awful incident,” he said. “Early reports are unclear but we are deeply saddened to hear reports that security officials in Pakistan have been killed in this attack."

This is what the Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapakse had to say. "I condemn this cowardly terrorist attack targeting the Sri Lankan cricket team," Rajapakse told AFP. "The Sri Lankan players had gone to Pakistan as ambassadors of goodwill."

6:50 George Binoy: Indians in NZ shocked

NDTV are reporting that there's shock among the players in the Indian dressing room in New Zealand ...

India were scheduled to tour Pakistan but the trip was cancelled after the terror attacks in Mumbai by Pakistan-based terrorists. Sri Lanka stepped in to fill the gap for Pakistan. Pakistan are scheduled to host the Champions Trophy later this year ...

6:50 George Binoy: How the attack happened

The Sri Lankans were on their way to the Gaddafi Stadium when their bus was attacked by five armed terrorists near Liberty market. Habibur Rehman, chief commissioner of police, said 12 masked terrorists fired at the Sri Lankan team bus. The gunmen shot at the wheels of the bus and also injured the driver. A grenade was also thrown at the bus but it missed.

"The bus came under attack as we were driving to the stadium, the gunmen targeted the wheels of the bus first and then the bus," Mahela Jayawardene told Cricinfo. "We all dived to the floor to take cover. About five players have been injured and also Paul Farbrace [a member of the support staff], but most of the injuries appear to be minor at this stage and caused by debris."

Lahore police chief Habib-ur Rehman said, "They appeared to be well-trained terrorists. They came on rickshaws." Television footage of several gunmen creeping through the trees, crouching to aim their kalashnikovs then running onto the next target were aired by Pakistan's private channel Geo, AFP reported. Crystals of broken glass littered the road next to a gun cartridge and an empty rocket-propelled grenade launcher. A police motorbike was shown crashed sideways into the road at the Liberty Chowk (roundabout) in Lahore. Bullet holes ripped through the windscreen of another vehicle and a white car was shown smashed headlong into the roundabout as nervous security officers guarded the site.

6:51 George Binoy: Concerns have come home to roost - Dickason

Reg Dickason, the security expert hired by England and Australia, said " A lot of concerns we raised during the Champions Trophy have unfortunately come home to roost. The notion of sporting teams being a protected species was held by many, but it was not a view that we shared, unfortunately."
6:52 George Binoy: Two car bombs defused

Pakistan police’s disposal unit inspector Abdul Ghafoor said that two car bombs had been defused, one at Liberty Square and the other at Firdus Park.

"We have defused a bomb in a white Hyundai and after some time we got information about a suspect car in the Firdus car park. We also defused the bomb there," he told AFP. Local sector warden Malik Fayyaz told AFP that grenades, three kilograms of explosives, a pistol and a one-metre detonating cable had been recovered.

6:52 George Binoy: Terrible and very sad - Miandad

"It has never happened before in Pakistan, sports persons haven’t been targeted," Javed Miandad told GEO TV. "It’s terrible and really sad. It looks like a well-thought and planned assault. Sri Lanka and Pakistan have always helped each other. They have never said no to tour Pakistan and have always helped us in troubled situations. The foreign teams were already not coming and this [incident] is going to affect Pakistan cricket in the future. This is not to say that cricket will stop. The world will have to stay united and fight terrorism. I hope they just don’t say they won’t tour Pakistan. If we do that we will only support the terrorists’ cause."
6:58 George Binoy: ICC statement on the Lahore attack

“We note with dismay and regret the events of this morning in Lahore and we condemn this attack without reservation," said Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive."

“It is a source of great sadness that there have been a number of fatalities in this attack and it is also very upsetting for the wider cricket family that some of the Sri Lanka players and one match official have been injured in this attack. At this time our thoughts and prayers are with the injured people and also the families of those who have died."

“I have confirmed with both Member Boards that the remainder of the tour has been cancelled and we are working hard to get our match officials out of the area as safely and as quickly as possible. I know, also, that the Pakistan Cricket Board is working with Sri Lanka Cricket to make sure the players are flown home at the earliest opportunity.”
7:00 Update: Inzamam to GEO TV

Inzamam-ul-Haq to GEO TV, “This is the first time that a cricket team has been seriously targeted. This is the most serious incident that has ever happened. Pakistan’s image will be hit and only time will tell how much damage has been done to Pakistan cricket. The World Cup too might be affected. Preparations for the world cup will start much before 2011 and no country would want to come now to Pakistan. As I said, we will know the extent of damage to our cricket in some time. So I am worried where Pakistan will get a chance to play, not only in Pakistan but outside as well. This is all so sad.”

7:03

7:10

7:16 Update: Samaraweera and Paranavitana out of danger

Samaraweera and Paranavitana were the most seriously injured but they are out of danger. "The two players are in hospital but are out of danger," Mendis told reporters adding "we are trying to get the team out of Pakistan as early as possible".
7:21 Update: Lawson "shocked and very very sad".

"I am shocked, and very, very sad," Lawson told Cricinfo. "It was an honest belief we held (that sporting teams would not be targetted by terrorists), and it is tragic that this has happened. I have been looking at the footage on TV and I know that area very well. I have a lot of friends over there and have been in contact."
7:25 Update: More reactions from Lawson

"Cricket won't be played in Pakistan for the forseeable future," Lawson told Cricinfo. "Pakistan look like they will become a wandering cricket team now. They will be playing at neutral venues, because you can guarantee that there won't be games there. Obviously, there is no chance of the Champions Trophy or the World Cup going ahead there."

7:28 Update: Security is priority - Modi

“We were fearful of the fact that cricketers may be targeted. It’s a very sad day for cricket that players have been targeted in Pakistan.” Modi told NDTV. “I think India is a very safe country. Yes we have had our share of attacks in the past. We are going to be extremely strict and tight in our security measures going forward. It is top most priority for us.”

7:30 Update: Sky news are reporting that the route of the Sri Lankan convoy was changed following the threat yesterday
7:37 Update: Nadeem Gauri, the TV umpire, to GEO TV: As soon as the bus reached the liberty market, we heard the noises of gun shots. We hid under the seats. The driver got shot and he died at the spot. The firing continued. The other umpire Ahsan Raza also got shot. All the umpires are safe now. Police squad got us to the airport.
7:37 Update:

Rameez Raja: I was entering through Ferozpur gate – this incident had happened near Liberty market gate – I heard the blast and the commotion. I never thought we will face a situation like this in Pakistan where sportspersons will be targeted. We have to get united and fight the terrorists. The civil society, sportsmen have to wake up and raise their voice. Time for staying quiet is over. Sri Lanka have always helped us and they are our friends in the cricketing world. Our way of life has been targeted. Our favorite pastime – cricket- has been targeted. Younis Khan’s triple ton garnered positive headlines across cricketing world. People had started to come in to watch and we were hoping that cricket would revive in Pakistan. Then this has happened.
7:45 Update: Sri Lankans airlifted out of Gaddafi Stadium

A helicopter landed on the centre pitch at Gaddafi stadium in Lahore. The Sri Lankan cricketers and support staff hurried towards the chopper, dragging their luggage. Some of the cricketers took pictures of the helicopter before boarding it. They will be flown to the airport from where they will leave for their country via Abu Dhabi.

Abdul Qadir to GEO TV: I don’t have words to express. This has never happened before in history. Cricket is such a sport that is loved across towns, cities and gullies in Pakistan. I had gone to the hospital and met Samaraweera and Tharanga. They were in the same room. I told them the country will be eternally grateful for coming to Pakistan to play.

7:52 Update:

New Zealand prime minister John Key said he was “very concerned at this turn of events, where an international sports team has been targeted by terrorists”.
8:00 Update:

We’re shocked but everyone is OK – Sangakkara

"There are a few injuries but everyone is safe and all the players are out of danger,” Kumar Sangakkara had told CNN IBN. "We are shocked, but apart from that everyone is okay. Thilan [Samaraweera] has a shrapnel wound in his leg, but he is fine. [Tharanga] Paranavitana had shrapnel in his chest, but thank God it wasn't very deep and just on the surface.

"I had shrapnel injuries in my shoulder, but they have all been removed and I'm okay now. Ajantha [Mendis] had shrapnel in his neck and scalp, but he too has had medical attention and is fine. Everyone else is perfectly all right.

"It's very unfortunate that this has happened. Everything had gone on very well until this morning, but it just goes to show that nothing is as it seems. I don't regret coming here to play cricket because that's what we have been doing all our lives. That is our profession.

"But I regret this incident, what has happened and the situation that we have had to go through. All we want to do now is to go back home to our families, get back home and be safe."

8:12 Update:

Attacks "frightening" - NZC chief

Justin Vaughan, New Zealand Cricket’s chief executive, said the attacks were “frightening” and that New Zealand would conduct a security review before their tour of Pakistan later this year.

"It's very frightening that for the first time a cricket team are what appears to be the specific target of terrorist action," Vaughan told NZPA. "That's never happened before -- previously all the incidents have been about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. This is a very different proposition and I think just a very frightening one for world cricket."

New Zealand are scheduled to play in Pakistan in November. "The tour is scheduled for November, and that's eight months away," Vaughan said. "We would be doing a security review prior to any commitment to the tour and that would normally take place around June or July. You'd have to say this would throw further doubt over that tour, but we don't make those sort of decisions off the cuff like that. This is really serious."
8:15 Update: Priority is safety and security of SL team - Lorgat

Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief, termed the attacks in Lahore on the Sri Lankan team bus as “pretty, pretty serious” and said that the repercussions could be severe for Pakistan’s cricket.

“It is pretty, pretty serious and it is very obvious that the landscape and the thinking has changed dramatically,” Lorgat told Cricinfo. Lorgat said the ICC’s top priority now was to arrange a safe trip back home for the Sri Lankan team. “Our priority is safety and security of the Lankan team and how to get them back home.”

Asked if the future of international cricket was in jeopardy in Pakistan at least in the immediate future, Lorgat said it would be too early to make any conclusive remarks but admitted it looked uncertain for the moment. “We are going to have to reevaluate what we do and where Pakistan plays its cricket.”

Lorgat also said that the terror attack in Lahore had come as an “absolute shock” for him because last year the ICC had done an assessment of suitable venues for the Champions Trophy and Lahore was listed as a safe place to play.

8:22 Update:

Wasim Akram said that Pakistan hosting the World Cup in 2011 was now a “distant dream”

"I don't want to talk about cricket alone. The attacks are unwarranted and have put Pakistan to shame. Please pray for us," Akram told ESPNStar. "I don't know who has done this but any attack on our guests is simply uncalled for.

"We should stand united under the circumstances and the world should understand that terrorism is now a universal concern. I can see a similar hand working in Mumbai and India must now know that Pakistan are equally at the receiving end.”

"How do you expect a foreign team to come to Pakistan now? We took pride in hosting our guests. This image has taken a beating. It's sad for Pakistan.”
8:25 Update: Pakistan's next assignment is an ODI series against Australia in the UAE. Cricket Australia's spokesman, Peter Young said: "We do not expect this to effect the series (in the UAE). We are due to complete a security inspection tour at the end of the week, and that is expected to go ahead as planned. "
8:27 Update: Waqar Younis on Geo Tv: "We pride ourselves on being a loving sporting nation but if these kinds of things happen, well it’s really sad. This is not good for our society or for our cricket. We wanted foreign teams to come and play but now it looks remote. Hopes of hosting World Cup is also receding. We have to agree with whatever ICC decides. People will refuse to travel to our part of the world."
8:32 Update:

The Australian Cricketers’ Association said the attack on the Sri Lankan team would have a “lasting impact” on the game in Pakistan.

"It is one of those things, you know the risk is pretty large in that part of the world in Pakistan, but there has always been a belief that sports people will not be targeted and I am just stunned," ACA’s chief Paul Marsh told AFP. "It is very sad that it has come to this for all the cricketers and Pakistan cricket in particular. This is not their doing but I am sure the fallout from this is going to have a lasting impact on Pakistan cricket and the future of the game in Pakistan."
9:26 Update:

Gamini Lokuge, the Sri Lankan sports minister, said a plane has been chartered to evacuate the cricket team from Lahore on Tuesday. "I don't have all the details, but we are chartering a plane to bring our cricketers home as soon as possible, preferably by tonight," Lokuge told AFP. Officials said earlier they were trying to fly the 25-member team through either Abu Dhabi or Dubai.
9:31 Update: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has also condemned the attack on Sri Lankan cricket players in Lahore. "The BCB is deeply concerned at this unprecedented attack on cricket, which is a symbol of hope and aspiration for millions in the subcontinent and around the world."

---------
If they get away it is work of the army and ISI. The gunman are captured on video, the security forces are just there. There is now fucking way they could get away. The only reason they got away was either ISI or military is behind the attack.

And off course behind all this is the hand of LTTE and the pupet master RAW. Haha

Just imagaine the plight of the country and families of those cricketers if a bigger disaster took place. Apart from thehuman costs what happened to Sri lanka Cricket after the rebel tour to South Africa would have got repeated.

Also spare a thouhght to Pakistanis. This is a country that gave us Multibarel guns from their fronts when we were cornered in Jaffna in early 2000's and India was only offering evacuation help but no guns. The poor contry will not see International cricket for a long time.

RAW... because it's just too risky the backlash...as they(India) want to have the high ground with regard to international terrorism...

the correct formula is,

r2= [(E1/E2)*(1+r1)] - 1

Moshe, bro..no you are wrong. Let me rederive the equations to show you why.

For clarity, let me use the notation rR = r1, rD= r2 for the ACTUAL annual interest rate in Rs, and the EQUIVALENT annual interest rate in USD.

Suppose, I am investing a principal of D1 USD, which is D1*E1 Rs, where E1 Rs/USD is the exchange rate at that time.

If the ANNUAL interest rate in SL on a n-year CD is rR, then the (principal+interest) after n years in Rs is

(D1*E1)*(1+rR)^n

When this is converted to USD at the end of n years, the (principal+interest) D2 in USD is given by

D2 = (D1*E1/E2)*(1+rR)^n (1)

where E2 Rs/USD is the exchange rate after n-years.

Now, we have to ask the question how much is the EQUIVALENT ANNUAL interest rate rD that this (principal+interest) D2 corresponds to in the US?

Since we invested D1 USD for n-years, at this EQUIVALENT ANNUAL interest rate of rD, to obtain the (principal+interest) D2 in USD, we have

D2= D1*(1+rD)^n (2)

Let us now use equations (1) and (2) to eliminate D2/D1 and arrive at

(1+rD)^n = (E1/E2)*(1+rR)^n

Taking the n-th root of this equation, we get

1+rD= [(E1/E2)^(1/n)]*(1+rR)

therefore,

rD= [(E1/E2)^(1/n)]*(1+rR) -1 (3)

Q.E.D

rD is the effective ANNUAL interest rate on this investment, as realized by the US investor. To evaluate how good that investment is, he should compare it against the ANNNUAL interest rate specified for an n-year CD in the US.

We can also arrive at an expression for the EQUIVALENT ANNUAL inflation rate i reflected in the exchange rates E1 and E2, by setting

E2= E1*(1+i)^n
so that

(E1/E2)^(1/n)= 1/(1+i) (4)

Then, substituting from Eqn (4) in Eqn (3) we get the much simpler expression for the EQUIVALENT interest rate in USD as

rD= (1+rR)/(1+i) - 1 (5)

in terms of the ACTUAL interest rate in Rs, and the EQUIVALENT ANNUAL foreign exchange inflation rate i.

All of the rest of my calculated results follow from expressions (3) and (5).

I have little doubt about LTTE's hand in the matter. Also, I think it has more than one stake holder as this single attack served many complex interests. Few points under discussion,

1. Tamil websites seemed the first to report.
2. India is hell bent to gain political capital and draw paralel with 26/11 attack pasing buck to Pakistan terrorists
3. LTTE and RAW have motivation to attack Pakistan-Sri Lanka interests(already has a precedance from last year)
4. Avenge GoSL victories
5. Shake the resolve of south for a communal backlash.

Like every other covert operation it may never come to light or even if it does, it would take a lot of time.

LTTE has tried to keep away from islamic terrorists. there were a few arm's length transactions; that's all. LTTE got more arms from non-muslim sources although it would have been easier to get from muslim sources.

Pro-LTTE outfit leader held for defending Rajiv's killing

Press Trust Of India
Dindigul, March 02, 2009
Leader of a pro-LTTE outift was on Monday arrested on the charge of defending the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi by the Tigers.

Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam leader Kolathur Mani was arrested in Salem for his speech at a public meeting here on February 26, police said.

Addressing the meeting, Mani had reportedly stated that "the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi was a right action".

This is the second time Mani had been arrested for speaking in support of banned LTTE since December last. Earlier, Mani, along with film director Seeman and another person, was arrested on December 19 for supporting the LTTE at a meeting in Erode district. Mani was later released on bail.

The state government had recently warned that it would not tolerate criticism of national leaders and burning of their portraits during protests over Sri Lankan Tamil issue.

Congress had also been demanding stringent action against pro-LTTE elements for burning effigies and portraits of party leaders over the issue.

Moshe,

Yes, let us agree to disagree.

But, here is the rub, you have confused my definition by giving a different equation for it. I was the one who originally defined what r2 (i.e, rD) as the annualized rate of return, as opposed to the total % return that you intended it to be. The equation I gave for MY DEFINITION was correct.

When we compare profitability of CDs, we always compare annual yields, not the total return, which is why I gave the equivalent annualized rate, incorporating the foreign exchange rate inflation, and not the total yield over the period, as you did.

So, we are not talking about the same thing, I am taking about an annualized equivalent rate of return, you are talking about the total % return over the entire period. You can use both to calculate the total return, as long as you understand the difference.

Driven by Jeffersonian instinct for the freedom of press, the Free-Our-Press website said the petition was inspired by the "call of conscience" of Lasantha Wickramatunga's final essay, where the late editor decried the plight of media freedom in Sri Lanka. The virtual campaign was launched with a new website that chronicles media suppression in Sri Lanka, and calls for 5000 supporters to join the campaign to woo Cooper.
]

Looks like Lasantha's killing by the Tamil terrorists was a part of this project.

Does anyone know who is on the extreme left ?

The man second from right is George Fernandez, former Indian Defence Minister,known LTTE supporter, the man who saved 18 people responsible for the death in the Rajiv Gandhi murder from the gallows, and who fired a Indian Navy chief for intercepting LTTE ships.

Patriots,

Pakistani's are our good friends and I can't think of a reason why Pakistani's would attack our cricketers. It is like saying that Sri Lankans attacked the former Pakistani Ambassador in Colombo. My gut feeling is that this is either LTTE or their partners in terror in Pakistan. Irrespective of our gut feelings, we should look at these terrorists in an open mind.

Can we ruled out LTTE or it's international arm has paid big money to execute this attack??

Becase over 10 gunmen joined for this attack..

Sam Perera said...

RC,

"LTTE is seeking international support at this time and they will be idiots to do something like attacking sports on international soil."

You are making an assumption that LTTE is acting rationally this moment, which I believe is not the case. For example, LTTE did it's failed suicide air attack when UN's John Holms was in Colombo. I am pretty sure that the suicide Sky Tiger attack shaped his testimony at UNSC next week. The of course we can go back to the killing of Rajiv Gandhi, in a time of not so screwed LTTE. Let's see what comes out of this attack.

2 things helped to servive our cricketers.
1. Driver who was keep driving uder gunfire.

2. Security staff who started attack towards terrorits and let Coach to pass the incident.

but it looks a well planed execution to target player to kill as they used rocket, grenade and after surrounded gunfire targetting the player coach. Security staff who were able to bering the gun fire at them to save players coach.

Pakistan promised us to give presidential security, but one vehicle with 7 policemen is definitely not presidential stuff, not at all by Pakistan standards.
Still – CEO of the SL Board stated this afternoon that he was happy with the security provided by Pakistani officials - Bullshit

This is a deliberate act to sour relations between Pakistan and SL.Definitly an Alkida related and perhaps these terrorists are from Kasmir,NW provinces or even from Afghanistan because they were carrying food, the almonds commonly eaten there. Our band of terrorists funded by the Diaspora may have funded this attack and the FBI agents will get involved to find out any international connections and this will be the much needed help we need to fight these terrorists and their fundraising diaspoora.Now that the tigers are getting decimated in Vanni they may open fronts like this speeding up their demise further.
All that talk about hearing Pottu hear and there or VP seen on a horse on a buffalo must be ignored as they may use this to distract us from looking for them elsewhere or take down the guard on them escaping. They are sure to continue else where. I am glad about hearing reports that the STF guys are combing the jungles in the south for them and this is overdue. We too heard a bit of gossip last August from the people in Rattota in Mathale that these guys keep coming to this towns from the nearby forests. I would urge the authorities to get the Rathhota police keep an eye on this as this place is only 1 ½ hours from Kandy. What we heard in Simalanduwa and Buthtala are now coming true.

It is very unlikely but not impossible for the attacks on the SL team. But this proves one thing. Terrorism has to be wiped out. I am proud it is being done at least in Sri Lanka.

I am sure you proud as well.

Peter would be proud? Peter is somebody who would be encouraging LTTE to use babies as cannon fodder to protect LTTE bigwigs to prolong the war for even few more weeks so that he can extend his refugee status in UK

yes, i can confirm,that our brave LTTE-troops left PTK-town last night due to the overwhelming pressure of the SLA. After one week of heavy urban fighting the dominance of the SLA simply was too strong. Please remind,that only 2000 LTTE-fighters fought against 20.000 SLA-soldiers with all heavy weaponry and an air force. The remaining LTTE-cadres left PTK-town around 02.00 h last night and withdrew to the region east of PTK towards the coast,which is called "Safe Zone" by the sinhalese genociders.

LTTE may have hired Lashkar to carry out the attack. Lashkar may have gotten the money and killed bunch of policemen and saved players since they love cricket.

Thank God players are alive. This reminds me of the Israeli Olympic attack in the past by Palestinian Terrorists.

There is a terror net around the world and LTTE is a big part of it.

comrades, don forget that good luck continues with SL. try to look on the brighter side.

we're winning the war while managing to disregard & show the finger to strong western + indian interference efforts. all our cricketers escaped without critical injuries.

while they killed hundreds in mumbai, they couldn't kill a single in lahore.

we must admit that the state security promised was nowhere to be seen. but we must never forget the 6 pakistani security officers who laid their lives to defend our players & the driver who had the wits to drive on under fire.

he should be handsomely rewarded by us, if not by the pakistanis for saving the entire SL team from a gruesome murder. it's no exaggeration.

The chances of LTTE at this stage of the conflict having the resources to pull off anything of the scale in Pakistan is slim to nothing...

this is purely a domestic terrorist operation to discredit the government of Zardari who is the husband of late Benazir Bhutto..
They (islamist militants) hate him just as much as her..

what the islamist want is to weaken the federal/central government...
that strengthens their hand..
more lawless the country more the chance of Sharia being seen attractive by the Locals...
exactly what happenned in Swat Valley...
militants thrive on disorder,lack of civil(secular) structures like provincial councils etc...
for examples see Iraq/algeria/chechnia

# I don't think its a wrong decision to tour in Pakistan.

# Given security may not be enough. Do we give similar security in Colombo?

# Pakistan (even terrorists there) have no reason to attack our cricket team.

# May be LTTE gave a contract. LTTE get weapons from terrorists in Paistan so they have good contacts. And LTTE DO have a reason for such an attack. Imagine the situation now in SL IF 6 cricketers are dead... Will public celebrate PTK fall...?

India "behind" for Sri Lanka team attack: Pakistan minister
A Pakistani minister accused India of being behind the attack on Sri Lanka's cricket team in the city of Lahore on Tuesday.
Tuesday, 03 March 2009 12:59
A Pakistani minister accused India of being behind the attack on Sri Lanka's cricket team in the city of Lahore on Tuesday, saying the attackers had crossed into Pakistan from India.

"The evidence which we have got shows that these terrorists entered from across the border from India," Sardar Nabil Ahmed Gabol, minister of state for shipping, told private Geo television.

"This was a conspiracy to defame Pakistan internationally."

"This incident took place in reaction to 26/11," he said referring to the Mumbai attacks in November in which at least 170 people were killed.

"It is a declaration of open war on Pakistan by India," said the minister, who is not one of the government's official spokesmen, but belongs to President Asif Ali Zardari's party.

I hope our defence and security folks are FULLY PREPARED for a very desperate Tamil terrorist attack in the south / Colombo.... in these final hours.

It's the responsibility and duty of us towards Motherlanka... to be exceptionally alert.

Today is an excellent day to round up, screen and arrest Tamil terrorist sleeper cells hiding in the notorious coastal belt... from Panadura to Puttlam.

Never take for granted the hard-earned peace we have CREATED through this war.

Because Tamil terrorists come in a plethora of names such as LTTE, ABC, XYZ, MIA, WTF etc… we need not spend too much time identifying or analyzing who or what they are.

And the mantra we need to use in order to keep ourselves glued to that ‘get-up and go’ mood?
