A 30-man LTTE team that breached the 59 Division FDL launched a string of attack this morning killing 15 soldiers in the process. The team had landed in Security Forces dominated Mulaitivu from the Nanthikadal lagoon around 6 a.m. undetected by the Army.
The team launched attacks on an Army Bus, Tractor and two Tanks causing damage to the four vehicles. The team then called in artillery at the FDL and coordinated a strike at the 59 FDL breaching it for a period of time until the Special Forces and Commandos were called in to secure the area. 11 Tigers were also killed in the counter attack, which is still ongoing.
Meanwhile an LTTE plane made a landing around 1.5kms ahead of the 58 Division's FDL at Visuamadu North. A heavy barrage of MBRL fire was immediately directed to the area. No movement was observed from the area following the attack. The Plane had landed on a tar road, further confirming the Army's doubts that it was not always using the landing strips discovered in the area.
In another development, a group of Tiger explosives experts on a mission to blow up the Iranamadu Tank Bund were caught following a daring amphibious operation along with a large quantity of explosives. If the bund was blasted, it could have caused irreparable damage to the area and made the progress of the Army extremely difficult.

Terrorists Return to Terrorism after Rehabilitation & Release
When captured LTTE cadre, fully trained in terrorist skills, are rehabilitated and released, they can easily return to terrorism, especially if offered much more money by separatists, than they can earn working as an ordinary citizen.
To counter this, the security forces of Sri Lanka will have to maintain a probationary reporting system, monitoring and surveillance of these individuals for a long time to come.
In addition, although they are released with minimal penalties now, a condition of release must be that they would be very severely dealt with, including capital punishment, if they commit crimes in the future as repeat offenders. These penalties must be an order-of-magnitude more severe than for first time offenders.
Appropriate legislation should be passed in Parliament to provide the necessary legal authority for such controls, surveillance and punishment under the law.

"DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Eleven Saudis who were released from Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and then passed through a Saudi rehabilitation program for former jihadists are now believed to have fled the country and joined terrorist groups abroad, Saudi officials said Tuesday.
The 11 former detainees include two who were already identified last month as members of a Yemeni terrorist group. Their names were on a list of 85 wanted terrorism suspects made public Tuesday by the Saudi Interior Ministry.
The announcement further underscored the difficulties faced by the Obama administration as it prepares to close the Guantánamo detention center. All told, 14 Saudis now appear to have rejoined terrorist groups after their return from Guantánamo, including the 11 living abroad and 3 who were rearrested in Saudi Arabia after their return.
Any perceived weaknesses in the Saudi program — widely viewed as a successful model — could pose problems for the return of the remaining Guantánamo detainees. Almost half of those are Yemeni, and their return depends in part on Yemen’s creation of a rehabilitation program based on the Saudi one.
It is not clear whether any of the 11 former detainees being sought by Saudi Arabia have taken part in terrorist attacks. Last month, American counterterrorism officials confirmed that Said Ali al-Shihri, a Saudi who was released from Guantánamo in November 2007, had become the deputy leader of the Yemeni branch of Al Qaeda, and that he was suspected of being involved in a deadly attack on the United States Embassy in Sana, Yemen’s capital, last year. Shortly afterward, Mr. Shihri appeared in a propaganda video alongside another former Guantánamo detainee, identified as Abu Hareth Muhammad al-Awfi.
Saudi officials have issued lists of wanted militants before, but the list of 85 — all but two of them Saudi — was the largest so far. As in the past, the authorities appealed for the men to return and turn themselves in.
“They will, of course, be interviewed and investigated and prosecuted for any crimes they may have committed,” said Gen. Mansour al-Turki, the chief spokesman of the Interior Ministry. “But by turning themselves in before committing any crime, they will have a better chance to be returned to their families.”
Although the Saudi authorities have mounted a fierce campaign against domestic terrorists in recent years, there is strong public sympathy for those who go abroad to fight in Muslim countries believed to be under occupation by foreigners. Accordingly, the government is more careful in dealing with them.
It is not clear why the Saudi authorities chose to identify the 11 former Guantánamo detainees or how long they have known about them. Muhammad bin Nayef, the Saudi minister who oversees the counterterrorism program, traveled to Yemen after the video showing the two Saudi jihadists appeared. Mr. Nayef has strong relationships with American and British intelligence officials, and he may have decided that more transparency would be helpful, said Bernard Haykel, a professor at Princeton University and an expert on Saudi Arabia.
In addition to releasing the list of 85 terrorism suspects, Saudi officials made a striking accusation: one of the men on it, Abdullah al-Qarawi, is a Saudi who has been operating from Iran for three years.
Mr. Qarawi, 35, is believed to have been behind some of the terrorist attacks in recent years inside Saudi Arabia, said a Saudi security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, saying he was not authorized to discuss the matter in public.
Known to followers as “the Star,” Mr. Qarawi is in charge of leading Al Qaeda’s operations in the Persian Gulf and Iran, and of bringing new members into Afghanistan, the official said. He is believed to have more than 100 Saudis working for him in Iran, where they move about freely, the official added.
Saudi Arabia and the United States have accused Iran in the past of harboring Qaeda members, and Iran has denied it. Saudi Arabia, which sees itself as the leader of the Muslim world, views Iran’s revolutionary Shiite regime with hostility, especially in light of its nuclear ambitions.
The list of 85 suspects also included Nasir al-Wuhayshi, the leader of the Yemeni branch of Al Qaeda, which recently announced that it was merging with the Saudi branch. Over the past year or so, the Yemeni group appears to have expanded and brought in a number of Saudis, experts say. Its leaders say they will use Yemen, which shares a border with Saudi Arabia, as a base to launch ambitious attacks throughout the region, including in Saudi Arabia and East Africa.
“I think Saudi Arabia is now taking very seriously the threat coming from Yemen,” said Gregory Johnsen, a terrorism analyst with experience in Yemen.
Yemen, long viewed as a haven for jihadists, began cooperating with the United States on counterterrorism in 2001, and it has had some notable successes. But its tribal structure, weak state and mountainous terrain have proven to be obstacles. Yemen’s unusually flexible policies — in which convicted terrorists are sometimes paroled in exchange for pledges of passivity and help in negotiating with other militants — have also drawn criticism from American officials.
All this has complicated the task of repatriating the Yemenis in Guantánamo. In recent months, their return seemed imminent, in part because of an agreement to create a rehabilitation program based on the Saudi one. Yemen briefly ran its own program for former jihadists. Saudi Arabia created a more ambitious prison-based program in 2004 and expanded it in 2007 to include a more therapeutic segment after release.
Last year, Saudi officials said none of the program’s graduates had returned to violence. That appears to have changed with the news about the former Guantánamo detainees, who went through the program before fleeing the country.

Over 95% of the Sri Lankans, specially Sinhalese I have associated with have tried to stab me in the back. Yet, I have found opportunity to give back to Sri Lanka.
I remember a long time ago when I was a student, I went to Petta and bought a luggage. When I try to put it in a bus to take home, none of the bus drivers would let me take it. I understand the bomb scare. I showed them that the bag was empty, they did not listen. So, I took a cab and went home never to help any Sri Lankan anywhere. That thought did not last long since. Later, I was heavily taken by the Sri Lankan passport office. I can go over and over. Yet, I have invested lot of time and money in Sri Lanka. I have helped provide a village with other amenities like many helpful expats around. When I tried to create a remote learning center, it was Sri Lankan who worked against me and made me unsuccessful. I tried to help a coconut replantation effort and when I failed, the person I worked with in Sri Lanka wrote me a humiliating letter blaming for stealing his ideas even though I stole none.
Bribing, I can live with. How can I get over the feeling that I am filling into a well that has no bottom?
I met a prominent Sri Lankan monk who is heading a sincere humanitarian work around the world. I asked him why he is not doing anything in Sri Lanka? He said, last time when he took some crutches for war veterans, people fought over them and then he saw one of the doctor stole few of them from the backdoor.
Your pragmatic approach is to change the people outside Sri Lanka and making them to accommodate without asking people in Sri Lanka to change.

"MULLAITTIVU: TIGER terrorists’ long list of bizarre network of underground bunkers, luxurious homes, storages, camp complexes, etc received a new dimension on Tuesday (3) morning when the troops uncovered a far-fetched colossal Torture Chamber cum an Open Prison of the LTTE in the west of VISUAMADU area, reminiscent of the yesteryear Nazi Era torture chambers, Auschwitz, the Jews death camp.
The entire LTTE Prison complex spreading over five acres in extent has been fenced with barbed wire rolls to a height of about 10 ft and includes tiny cells, made of concrete and cement with only thin openings for ventilation. All the metal doors to the chambers can be padlocked from the outside as the photos depict.
Bringing memories of age-old royal punishments (Dandukanda) meted out to traitors in our old kingdoms were a pair of metal handcuffs, found weilded to the ground with concrete, inside one of the dark Torture Chambers in the complex. (see photo)
The entire complex has been guarded through four turrets of about 30-40 ft from all four corners of the precincts. Three MP's detained at Northern Sri Lanka check point

Feb 04, Medawachchiya: Three opposition parliamentarians of main opposition United National Party and Tamil National Alliance were detained at the Medawachchiya police checkpoint for more than three hours this morning as they haven't had permission to move towards Mannar, police said.
UNP Parliamentarian Jayalath Jayawardene along with TNA Parliamentarians Suresh Premachandran and C. Chandranehru has tried to move towards Mannar to meet the Mannar Bishop Rayappu Joseph this morning.
According to the sources they were detained at the Medawachchiya police checkpoint for more than three hours and then were turned back as they were not granted permission to proceed.
Dr. Jayalath Jayawardene said that they sought the permission to go to Mannar as they wanted to meet Bishop Joseph and the displaced in the cleared areas.
However police said the MP's were not allowed to move ahead because they didn’t have permission from the Ministry of Defence to enter into the area.

Deputy sea tiger leader killed; fall of Chalai imminent
Adding another huge setback for the LTTE terrorists in Wanni battlefront the Deputy LTTE sea tiger leader and three other sea tiger leaders were killed in a fierce confrontation took place in north of Chalai yesterday, 4 February, the latest military sources in battlefront said.
According to the available information, LTTE sea tiger deputy leader known as Vinayagam was killed as troops of 55 Division on mission to capture LTTE's last sea tiger base, Chalai, launched an effective offensive thrust against LTTE resistance. The intense fighting reported between 1.45PM to 2.00 PM, defence sources said.
By intercepting LTTE communication channels, it is revealed that terrorists were unable to locate the body of the killed deputy sea tiger leader so far as troops continued their offensive on remaining LTTE positions in the area.
Meanwhile, In-charge of LTTE land fighting group known as Kader and sea tiger Pooneryn area leader know as Pahalawan were also killed during the confrontation, military sources further confirmed.
Sea tiger special leader known as Sinna Kannan was killed in a separate confrontation reported in north of Chalai around 8.50 AM yesterday. He was later given the self-styled rank of 'Lt. Colonel', Electronic Warfare (EW) sources confirmed intercepting LTTE communication channels. Eight more sea tigers were also killed during the battle.
Troops are now heading towards Chalai, the only remaining sea tiger base, gaining more LTTE hiding areas amidst stiff resistance given by the terrorists.

agreed 100%. GR revolutionized the modern electronic and web warfare which was never a part of SLDF.
i would also like to see MR or GR taking the initiative to develop a govt funded military R&D facility. There are lots of super talent passing out from SL universities and other technical colleges who are capable of creating some good quality military equipment. i can remember when i submitted a proposal to the ministry of a UAV they did not even bothered to send me a reply letter atleast rejecting the idea. so i gave it up.
a quality R&D facility would not only save money but will be very helpful for innovative military plans.

Colombo, 05 February, (Asiantribune.com): Sri Lanka Army’s 55 Division commanded by Brigadier Prasna Silva captured Chali one of the main sea Tiger base. LTTE’s sea Tiger base Chali is one of main base from where the LTTE have their loading and unloading of weapons to Sri Lanka and also they do have the biggest sea tiger base.
Today morning around 10.00am a 12 years old girls came in front of the troops raising her hand to pretend as she was going to surrender and when soldiers went close to here she blew herself. This is evidence that LTTE use Children for suicide bombing.
In the meantime, top rung LTTE leaders Vinayagam alias Mike -4, Pagalavan, Cader, Sinnakannan, Annavelan and at least a dozen more of them were killed in the battle to capture Chalai.

There were six teams of Sea Tigers fighting on land. Each one was led by a senior leader.
Intercepted communication is weak.
It can mean one of a few things.
1. All six leaders were killed.
2. All six teams were annihilated.
3. Terras lost contact with all six teams.
4. Terras ordered all six teams to withdraw.
I don't know why army website went ahead and published the first eventuality. Although we are all hopeful that the second scenario is true.
I think Defence website will publish the story once we get more confirmation.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka accepts that they have made an error regarding the use of cluster munitions by the Sri Lankan military. He has told the Government Peace Secretariat that an apology is due, says Peace Secretariat head Prof. Rajiva Wijeyasinghe.
