All quiet on the battlefront

Today was a day of closure in the LTTE's violent saga. However, some interesting developments can be expected within the next day or two from the Eastern Province as Ram and Umaram and their teams are traced down.

The two leaders moved their families to the north soon after their split with Karuna in 2004. Their fate may be revealed in due course as more bodies are recovered from the battlefield.

As reported by the media, LTTE's former police and 'political wing' chief and chief spokesman Nadesan, his family, Pulidevan and his family and Ramesh and his family have all died and their bodies discovered by the Special Forces.

There were rumours that the two leaders had gone down on their knees and begged the Special Forces at which point they assumed the Special Forces to smile and let them go.

Rumours are that Prabhakaran's entire family was dead. These rumours indicate that even Prabha's daughter, Duharga was there at the scene. Until otherwise indicated by the government, at this moment in particular, their bodies are nowhere to be found.

Other leaders like Lawrence, Karikalan, Ilanthirayan, Papa, Sempian etc are also dead. Their bodies might also be discovered in due course.

The chief of the LTTE's Mine-laying unit and a chief innovator of the Jhonny Mine and other deadly IEDs has died having lost both his legs in a mysterious blast. The LTTE's chief of smuggling with India and the deputy of the international procurement units (not Castro) have also died.

Meanwhile the last batch of the 80,500 civilians rescued after the final operation on the 15th were dispatched to Vavuniya today. With this the total number of civilians rescued is a staggering 350,000.

Look at the return of we can never defeat the LTTE militeraly doomsday eelamist theorists.

We should always do opposite to what these terrorists tell us because they are always trying to lead us down a wrong path.

When they said ceasfire we went to war and we won. When they said federal we said unitary and keep our mother land united.

Now they say small army and big police. That means we need to have big army and small police. Everyone knows police can be corrupt but not army. LTTE only grew because our police was useless. When army got into action LTTE was wiped out. So better we keep army big and forget about police.

Thanks to terrorists for giving away your plans so we can be prepared. Miss Information terrorist will probably say the same.

I have notice an quite interesting dialog emerging here on energy, a vital area that needs to be looked at very carefully in the agenda of the post-war development of SL.

Integrating renewable energy sources is a very much studied topic world over these days. There are many unresolved issues when it comes to situations where the proportion of renewable sources is substantial. As many power engineers understand frequency (50Hz +- 1%) and voltage (230 V +- 6% ?) control under inherently intermittent and random generation by renewables is very challenging and needs a lot of research (One may want to look at how some EU countries specially Spain is doing with wind and solar power). Furthermore solar energy is available only during daytime and utilities would be forced to maintain conventional generating capacity to provide energy during dark hours unless they maintain huge energy storage facilities, very very costly currently. So my feeling is that it is extremely difficult to judge the best way to integrate a substantial proportion of renewables offhand. As such, we need a lot of research to be done before developing a plan to integrate renewables.

This suggests that we need to get relevant people to commence good research programs on these areas. CEB (Perhaps day are limited!) never had a research arm as far as I know. But I think that they have a big project management arm to handle foreign funded projects!

By no means I am underestimating the potential contribution of renewables in energy sector of the country. But we need to study them thoroughly and even develop new technology required to accommodate renewables efficiently.

With regard to the discussion on the size of our SLDF:
This is a big optimization problem with a large number of variables and parameters in mathematical terms. I guess we need very high level research to reach optimum figures!

Hence,I think we need to keep on throwing ideas in forums like this. But there should be a group of experts in relevant institution to grasp those ideas, convert them into practical problems and solve them scientifically without letting solutions to emerge out of whims and fancies of individuals.

This is just a suggestion and carries no intention to criticize any blogger in the community

Superb talk by Basil.. i naver thought Basil is capable of issuing comments like this. Full Article
Basil tells international community to be our partners, not monitors
By Vindya Amaranayake

The international community is welcome to provide Sri Lanka with assistance, but it should be according to the wishes of the people of this country, including the people of the North, Senior Presidential Advisor and MP Basil Rakapaksa said in a message to the international community.

“If they want to be our friends, then they should be genuine friends. We do not want ‘monitors,’ we need partners. Be our partners in this task to help our people,” Rajapaksa said.

He expressed the government’s gratitude towards the countries that have already pledged support and added, “We will have discussions with them. And, if it is purely money, meant for the development of the people and the country, we will accept it. Otherwise, we will not. We have learnt our lesson. We will not forget it. For the last 30 years, this country suffered. Our position is, we do not want Trojan Horses. We will not accept that.”

Highlighting that ‘international community’ does not signify just a handful of nations, he emphasised that many nations across the globe helped Sri Lanka defeat terrorism. He also said although one or two individuals in a country criticise the Sri Lankan Government, it does not mean the people of that country are not sympathetic towards Lanka’s fight against terrorism.
Rajapaksa stressed the point that it was the people of this country, and not the members of the international community, who had to endure the bitter civil war for nearly three decades and therefore, they know the pain of that suffering more than anyone else.
“The international community must understand that it is we, the people of this country, who had to endure this problem. There is nobody else, who understands the repercussions and the sufferings than us. The suffering was not confined to the individual communities of Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims or the Burghers. Every single person in this country suffered. Not those who are outside the country.”

[Mate, you seem to be a very junior engineer trying to learn A, B, C of power generation and transmission. You also sounded like working for CEB in renewable source section.

My advice to you “DO NOT TRY TO REINVENT THE WHEEL” . There are thousands of excellent engineering brains working on energy issues and solutions. I am one of them. My last advice to you is – keep learning!

May 24, 2009 1:13 PM]

I never worked in the Renewable Section of the CEB. It is news to me that energy can be renewed. I thought that only things like houses, cars and of course HOPES can be renewed. Like the RENEWED HOPES of those pigs who are waiting for the Fat Pig to come alive and create Eelam for them to live happily ever after.

They do not understand that Eelam (a Government of Pigs For the Pigs and By the Pigs) can neither be created nor destroyed. No, I am not a pig. I say Eelam cannot be destroyed because it cannot be created. Are you stupid? How can you destroy something that has neither been created nor will ever be created?

They say things like energy can be converted from one form to another. For example, The Fat Pig has been converted to a whole lot of bacon and one single sausage (and not a very long sausage at that). But you cannot convert all that rotting bacon and the single sausage (if they can locate it) back to a Fat Pig again. It is called a non reversible process. So the pigs waiting for his resurrection from the dead are in for a beeeeg disappointment.

Yes I am trying to learn Power Generation. Especially how a Fat Pig used to generate Power using stupid pigs (even piglets) as fuel. That is a fine renewable energy source for you because pigs breed like pigs (no that doesn't sound right, is it rats?). Anyway there will never be a shortage of stupid pigs in the world.

The Fat Pig also tried to do Power Transmission like in his annual Mahaveer Speech, where he usually squeals that the formation of Eelam is just around the corner. Finally, he found out the hard way that what was just around the corner was not Eelam but one of our Army Kollas from Giranduru Kotte hoding a rifle.

And UKW, Don't hold your breath this year for the Transmission of Power through the Mahaveer speech. Our Army Kolla from Giranduru Kotte pulled the plug off that too. And it is not going to be replugged as long as those Kollas are there.

OK I will try not to Reinvent the WHEEL if you promise not to try to invent WHEELAM (WILD HOG EELAM).

The LTTE have admitted for the first time that their leader Velupillai Prabhakaran is dead.

A spokesman for the group also told the BBC that it would now use non-violent methods to fight for Tamils’ rights.

Sri Lanka’s army last week released pictures it said showed Prabhakaran’s body after its final offensive.

The statement from the Tamil Tigers (LTTE) said he was killed “fighting the military oppression of the Sri Lankan government” last Sunday.

The statement was signed by the defeated group’s head of international relations, Selvarasa Pathmanathan.

It said that the LTTE had declared a week of mourning for their dead leader, starting on 25 May.

In a telephone interview with the BBC, Mr Pathmanathan said Prabhakaran had died on 17 May but did not give details of the circumstances.

“We have already announced that we have given up violence and agreed to enter a democratic process to achieve the rights for the Tamil (self) determination of our people,” he said.

He called me right away and told me that he will announce it to the media.

As I said before, KP, though a pig, is a smart pig. Not like some pigs who are still dreaming of W.H. EELAM. He is so smart that he knows that I am smart too and will not say something unless I know what I am talking about.

KP has also promised that the pigs will behave properly hereafter but will try to win Eelam peacefully!! ha! ha! Pigs? peaceful? don't make me laugh.

He still wants a place for pigs to be born, live and die in full freedom as pigs. We have already given you that 3rd part, where you can die. But for the other two all you need is some nice mud and a whole lot of shit.

I don't think that even KP's word is going to convince the pigs like you know who. They are soooooooooo stupid.

Head of International Secretariat of the Intelligence wing of the LTTE, Mr. Arivazhakan, who contacted TamilNet Friday categorically denied the reports that the LTTE leader Mr. Velupillai Pirapaharan has been killed. Mr. Arivazhakan urged the global Tamil community not to trust the "engineered rumours," being spread by the Government of Sri Lanka and its military establishment.

"Our beloved leader is alive," he said and added that the LTTE leadership will make contact with its people at a suitable time in future.

"These rumours have been set afloat to confuse the global Tamil community which has been voicing support for the liberation of Tamil Eelam," he further said.

Mr. Arivazhakan, who verified his identity through a senior reporter in Sri Lanka, did not reveal his location due to security reasons.

[Sara,

You said ONE of the most important things mentioned so far in this debate on energy options: What is the cost?

But, the Cost/KW installed is not the correct criterion to use to decide on the correct energy option. That is a measure only of the capital cost of equipment. Instead, all of the following factors must be considered in comparing energy options:

1. Capital cost
2. Fuel costs (zero for wind/solar)
3. Operating & maintenance costs
4. Financing Costs including Inflation
5. Price of competing energy sources
6. Operating period
7. Equipment Salvage, Disposal and End-of-life Replacement costs]

The IAEA report gives these too, which I did not mention before. It also uses NBV Net Back Value, which is the same thing that you are talking of. Some call it the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCE).

I fully agree with what you have said.

anyway one more thing we have to consider is the rapid variations in PV & wind power during the day as someone had mentioned already. This means that we cannot allow it to be more than a certain maximumm % of the total generation or have to install expensive storage systems.

I would be grateful to have from you the latest cost parameters if you have them.

The Real Story

Certain leaders of the LTTE contacted the army and wanted to surrender. Namingly Nadesan, pulidevcan and Ilango, As a gesture of their surrender they released POW's and came with white flags. But this was just a diversionery tactic.
The LTTE began a massive operation after that with 500 black tigers when the army was expecting prabha to surrender like Nadesan etc... Initialy the LTTE took over the 3 bunkers of the 53rd division for around 3 hours and and stole an ambulance. Then the army counter attacked using thermobaric weapons reducing around 300 tigers into ashes. Around 40 SLA gave their lives to the motherland. After this they found a body which resembled the body of prabha in the ambulance and out of euphoria told the president who was in jordan and he declared victory. On his arrival on sunday however the DNA test came out nagative and bascially the govt was shitting in their pants and thats why the victory speech wasnt made on sunday.
Hence the army started to look for prabhas body like mad dogs and found prabha hiding in the kadolana with his youngest son Balachandran. According to reports Prabha was in shock that no black tigers were around. Also after the failed attempt all the top LTTE leaders surrendered to the army and prabha was brought to colombo.
Prabha was borught to col, interogated and executed under the orders of GR. Even the president had no idea until he was killed, because GR felt that HE would feel sympathetic towards Prabha.. After he was executed prabha was air droped to pudumathalan to be found by soldiers. Wife and Daughter surrendered as well after the failure of the attack and they were executed along with the other leaders and the younger son. The executions were done by SF and commando teams.

I thought that pigs are the most stupid animals in the world and here is Hilary immediately diproving my theory. She wants $ 48.6 billion just to talk about war!!!

If that was given to SF he would have finished off all the pigs in the world (there are supposed to be 2 billion) and still be left with a couple of billions to spare. And there would be hardly any talking. That would work out as about $ 25 per pig. Not bad when you consider the bacon and sauasages that he is going to sell on the side, which should more than offset the cost.

We can also offer Hilary a good sausage or two as Bill is not in active service.

You are right. To go for a powerful air fore is not within the means of SL at present. The Navy must be developed and technology along with it. This is a project which involves years of planning development.

In the meantime a 500 000 strong Army will be a strong deterrent for any nation which dares to step foot in SL again. Americans (don't forget) could not end things by bombing the hell out of Iraq. They had to commit ground troops.

There are nearly 100 000 kids who qualify for University yearly but only a fraction get places. Dfence University should offer them scholarships and a wage so that they can obtain qualification including defence and intelligence training. The brightest can be posted overseas.

KP is going to be more dangerous than VP as he has found the most effective way to get back their promised land by using their vast finances and getting in to the political arena where VP never did to the disappointment of people like KP.
KP’s plan is to fund and get together with the Tamil politicians and contest the future elections thus acquiring the foothold they need in the island. Then they will use their money to infiltrate every Dpt buying and bribing their way to power and control thereby getting to achieve their goal.
Only way to prevent this to resettle the displaced Muslims and Sinhalese in those areas they lived once and call an election. Prior to this all patties that are patriotic must pass legislation to ban any communal or religious parties in the island thus preventing these Diaspora funded terrorists creeping back to the island.Nip it in the bud before it’s too late. Read the lies of the so-called journalist Marie Colvin of the Times:

The paragraphs below appear after a fabricated sequence events in which s/he has been in the ears of various World Leaders and their emissaries including Vijay Nambiar. Having told lies (that Vijay Nambiar is sure to deny) the so-called journo goes on to say this to cover tracks:

"The source said all in the group were killed. He is now in hiding, fearful for his life. Chandra Nehru has fled the country after being threatened, the MP says, by the president and his brother.

Over the past few days, Nambiar’s role as UN envoy has come into question. His brother, Satish, has been a paid consultant to the Sri Lankan army since 2002. Satish once wrote that General Sarath Fonseka, commander of the Sri Lankan armed forces, “displayed the qualities of a great military leader”. "

Then the Pièce de résistance:

"I am in a difficult position as a journalist reporting this story. I first went to Sri Lanka in 2001 to investigate reports that the government was blocking food and medical supplies to half a million Tamils. Journalists had been largely banned from the northern Tamil area for six years.

I found people living in squalor and doctors pleading for medicine. Leaders such as Nadesan and Puleedevan told me they had reduced their demands from independence to autonomy within Sri Lanka.

As I was being smuggled out of the area at night, we were ambushed by the Sri Lankan army. I was unhurt until I shouted, “Journalist, journalist.” Then they fired an RPG at me, severely wounding me. "

Haa Haaa Haaa.

Methinks that this journalist is Tamil and an LTTE member. Even a white woman (hilarious) would have more self-respect than to spin such a yarn!

One of the most appalling steps taken by all GOSL is not to start private universities in the country. We fought for our status & priveledges being the best in the country to get the highest marks to enter the universities and being top of the lot and did not want the unfortunate lot who just missed the entrance clamouring back door entry if private universities introduced.

-----------------------
Totally agree. Not every one can study the level required by our Advance Level. In the west you have a concept of TAFE. Also there are universities where the main focus is oriented less towards theory and more towards industry. We need to go in that direction. We need all our population to have some kind of Tertiary Education. Then we should try to get them exposed to overseas job markets. Even a qualification from a substandard University is better than having none at all. Also some of the people who went to these universities come up with much better creative ideas than the ones who go to the best Universities.

"It's time to stop this annual political motivated exercise of dealing with one single situation on the account of many other more severe. The need to improve the health situation of the Palestinian people is proper and valid, but we should be at least as sensitive to the needs of many others.

Statement by Ron Adam, Deputy Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations in Geneva,
to the 62nd World Health Assembly
on World Health Organization Resolution WHA62.2:

Health conditions in the occupied Palestinian territory, including east Jerusalem, and in the occupied Syrian Golan

"Unimaginable Human Catastrophe", this is the Red Cross description of the health situation in Sri Lanka these days. The statement was issued on Friday, last week. Now, we are actually approaching the end of the conflict, but the facts on the ground are beginning to unfold. There are 3,000 dead bodies lying on the ground in the war zone and a further 25,000 people critically injured. The international community pleads to protect and support the remaining thousand of starving civilians caught in the conflict zone. WHO's HAC announced that more than 115,000 people have fled LTTE-controlled areas between 20 April and 3 May while an estimated 15,000 -20,000 remain in the area, suffering from potential diseases and lack of clean water.

Distinguished delegates,

It was extremely urgent and important for the Executive Board under the chairmanship of Sri Lanka to bring the conflict in Gaza for a discussion and a resolution in the Board, albeit for the efforts by some to discourage the chairman from doing so. Now, when thousands are bring killed and tens of thousands are in grave health situation in Sri Lanka, there is no urgency of his part, or some Arab countries to discuss the situation in that region.

WHO Executive Board and the Assembly must decide: either to include on the agenda all urgent health situations or not to politicize this organ at all.

In January this year the EB adopted an unprecedented resolution which called for the withdrawal of armed forces from an area. Can you imagine that such a resolution could have been adopted today on the situation in Sri Lanka? NO. As the WHO should not have dealt with the situation in Gaza, or for that matter to discuss annually the "health situation of the Palestinians in the OPT", so it will not have a debate on the armed conflict in Sri Lanka and its affect on civilian population. These kind of debates take place in the General Assembly or the Security Council of the United Nations.

During 60 years of WHO there was never such an intervention of the organization in a conflict between two narratives, and that is the right approach.

Exactly as there was no discussion, nor a resolution on the health situation in Haiti, where tropical storm Fay and hurricanes Gustav, Hanna and Ike swept across the tiny nation in August and September 2008 and left hundreds of people killed, thousands without shelter and more than 80 per cent of agricultural production lost and the drinking water supply severely affected.

Nor on the health situation in Ethiopia where the needs for food and drinking water rose relentlessly last year, from more than 2 million to 4.6 million in June, to nearly 6.5 million people in Ethiopia in October 2008 - mostly in the southern regions of the country.

Did any Member State had proposed to discuss the health situation in Djibouti, Kenya and Somalia, countries on which the United Nations said some 17 million people were in jeopardy in 2008, preserving the Horn of Africa’s reputation as the most urgent humanitarian crisis in the world?

And the same goes to situation of some 200,000 people who, according to Red Cross, were severely affected from virulent epidemic of dengue fever in Rio de Janeiro, of these 200 died, mostly in the favelas, "those impoverished districts devoid of any proper medical or social infrastructure", as the Red Cross puts it.

Moshe Dyan said...

contd....

Did someone propose to discuss and decide on the health situation in Zimbabwe, where 7 million people - of the country’s approximately 11 million - were in need of food aid early in 2009, according to the World Food Programme, because of failed harvests? And in addition, since last August, a widespread cholera outbreak, under-resourced and under-staffed health systems, and inadequate access to safe drinking water and hygiene have been threatening the wellbeing of tens of thousands of Zimbabweans. As of mid May, the total number of people contracting cholera reached 97,800 and the death toll stood at 4,300. According to the Red Cross, shortages of medicines, equipment and staff at health facilities throughout the country have been compounding the health challenges.

And we will probably not discuss the health situation in Pakistan, where as of 15 May, according to WHO's HAC, the Provincial Relief reported 1,716,026 IDPs have been registered in 11 districts, more than 230,000 in 25 IDP camps and almost 1.5 millions outside camps.

Thousands of civilians and militants were killed in less than a month, according to the United Nations. WHO reported some 22 disease outbreaks of varying severity since August, including acute watery diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, measles, malaria, chicken pox and mumps. Fatalities related to waterborne diseases had also been recorded. WHO also reported that over 4,000 children under the age of five suffered from acute malnutrition. “This is a huge and rapidly unfolding emergency”, the High Commissioner of Refugees said recently.

This Assembly will probably not discuss or adopt a resolution on the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where in the past nine months have seen renewed fighting in which hundreds have been killed and more than half a million people were displaced. Only since the beginning of the year, an estimated 100,000 people in the eastern province of South Kivu have been displaced by fear of armed groups.

Mr. Chairman,

We did not mention here the long lasting critical health situation in Darful, with countless numbers of people have been killed and wounded, or the evolving situation in Chad and of many other specific critical situations around the globe. But those poor, sick and dying people will not get the same attention of this august assembly. Why? Because the Arabs will not raise their plight here, hence the attention is allocated to Palestinians only.

Colleagues! The agenda of WHO is hijacked, as the agenda in other Agencies, as the agenda of the HR Council was. The EU is still looking for signatures in order to call for a special session on Sri Lanka, with no results. It's time to stop this annual political motivated exercise of dealing with one single situation on the account of many other more severe. You either deal with all conflicts or you don't deal with any. The need to improve the health situation of the Palestinian people is proper and valid, but we should be at least as sensitive to the needs of many others. Mr. Chairman, let me tell you very clearly and loudly - we have nothing to hide, all the information is open and we have answers to the questions on health matters on the ground. These answers are irrelevant and the initiators of this agenda item are not interesting to hear them.

Moshe Dyan said...

contd....

Distinguished Colleagues, I don't call on you to vote for my country or against Palestine. I only say: think of WHO. This absurd exercise is not a given demand from god. It's time to stop. Vote against this resolution, which has nothing to do with health and everything to do with politics. As the debate here will have nothing to do with the facts in the reality. It is not a vote against a people. It is a vote against the principle of singling out one situation on the account of other. And if you can't do it this year, think about it toward the next year.

Mr. Chairman, Israel calls for a vote on this resolution, although we are aware of the results. Member States will vote not according to their conscience and care for the Organization and its more-than-ever busy agenda but due to irrelevant political calculations. I hope, for the Organization and for the UN at large that this annual fruitless politically motivated exercise will come to end some time in the future. Thank you Mr. Chairman."

You are right, not allowing private universities to be established is a HUGE MISTAKE.

We need to have about 60000-80000 kids entering universities each year, but instead we only have abot 20000 new openings each in the public universities. And too many of the kids take social-studies, liberal arts, arts, socialogy.... etc kinda of majors. This is not the future.

The future is math, engineering, IT, science and business.

Right now we are not building the workforce of the future. It could cost us big time in the future.

This is how you would stimulate the economy, build technology appropriate for defence and other needs of a 21st century country and build the future Intelligence Community. Provide training to soldiers who are veterans of the recent War.
This should be their reward.

WRT JVP, you are absolutely correct. I've spoken to them. They are not likely to be a problem for the Defence Uni. One of their chief complaints is that the best teachers will go to the private Uni's.

Well, pay the teachers better. OTOH, invite expatriate experts to come on sabbatical or working holidays, work for free while having a holiday. Holding a 5 week course for example would not be hard while seeing the sights of Sri Lanka. Provide these guys with decent but cheap accomodation and they will be happy to hold workshops at Hambanthota and Pasikuda. They will provide their services for nothing while having a holiday and having a tax exemption in the country of residence.

Ananda-USA said...

Saul, Bro,

What's with the **Expletives Deleted** stuff? Can you repost your query...I can't find it... and I'll be happy to answer you.

I too feel concerned about lack of INFORMATION on what is being done to help the civilian IDPs more quickly, since the Victory on March 18, 2009. But, lack of INFORMATION does not mean they are not being helped; that news has just taken a back seat to other events such as the Victory itself, and fending off LTTE initiated moves in Western countries. For example, Ban Ki-Moon's "UN" comments have been completely distorted by the LTTE and are plastered all over the world to demonize the GOSL.

Regarding the IDPs, the GOSL has said they will be returned to their homes within 3 months. They need to be screened for LTTE cadre hiding among them as IDPs; those cadre have to be sent to rehabilitation...I wrote before why this is a MUST and must be handled in combination with PROBATION, CUSTODY and JOB TRAINING programs. 10,000 LTTE cadre have already been captured and/or identified among the IDPs.

When the IDPs are returned to their homes, they still have to be helped to make a living, and survive until their incomes are restored, and local food and other markets, essential to living, are restored.

The GOSL is moving to jump start their farming again, provide them seed, fertilizer etc, and arrange for collection of their produce and take them to markets in cities in the South. Such delivery-to-market assistance is routine in the tea growing highland areas, to collect tea leaves and take them to factories. Also, in the South, vegetables are collected by government and private companies from farmers and brought to market; so this is not a brandnew venture for the GOSL to institute. This is ONE of the ways being contemplated for helping IDPs resume their lives in their own homes.

Lots of money is pouring in from various countries, including Rs. 500 million from India, for helping the IDPs, both in the short term, and in the short term.

Partiots at DW look at things at different time scales, short, intermediate and long term, as their interest is piqued. That does not mean they are oblivious or indifferent to the needs of the IDPs.

If you care to contribute PERSONALLY to helping Sri Lanka Tamil IDPs, please go to http://www.futuresrilanka.com/ and make a contribution .

Many of us, including myself, have contributed, and are contributing, to this fund.

One of their chief complaints is that the best teachers will go to the private Uni's.

-------------------------
Undergraduate degrees don't need the best lecturers. They become important at post graduate level. Undergraduate subjects are pretty basic (Not sure about medicine though).

When it comes to post graduate level, the professors would hire only the best of the best. They would never higher ordinary students. Otherwise their own research would be at jeopardy. Therefore it is very likely they would end taking students from the best uni such as Katubadha etc for post graduate work. So this thing about best professors going to well paid universities becomes irrelevant.
What ever happens no one can buy intelligence, therefore intelligent students get the right place what ever happens (Maybe this doesn't apply to arts students. That is why JVP must be worried about).

Ananda -USA, first and foremost my apologies to you and other people on this blog. You have always been courteous, and I crossed a line.

But I crossed a line deliberately.

Here's why:

I want SL to win. I have been open about it. BuT after the GREAT victory of the SLA I am worried that the SL government is NOT doing enough for the IDPs and that makes me very worried.

If the SL government loses this war - i.e. that of international opinion - a lot of victories will have been in vain.

Therefore my urgency; I do NOT see the SL patriots here talking of how to support the IDPs. I believe that is the highest priority today.

So with my best wishes, I am trying to provoke a response. You are - as I said despite the fact that I disagree with you 90% of the time - a very very intelligent, but more important, UPRIGHT, person. Like S am and Moshe.

I see too much of what the SLA government should doo in the future, NOT enough of what it should do NOW.

Therefore, I am trying to reach out to you to help the IDPs. I could be wrong; I may be a fool. But I am NOT trolling.

Saul,

OK..apology accepted. But, I think the MEANS you adopted to get OUR ATTENTION is wrong and counterproductive to you. You can still get the same attention courteously. That said, lets MOVE AWAY from this.

SUGGESTION:
Why don't you THINK OF SOME SOLUTIONS, and make some CONCRETE SUGGESTIONS on what WE at DW could do MORE to help IDPs. Also, come up with some ideas that the GOSL could implement, and if they are good, I will pass them onto the GOSL.

FURTHER INFO:
You may not know, BUT MOST PEOPLE IN THE SOUTH of Sri Lanka are RUNNING to Help the IDPs, in every way they can.

I spoke to two of my sister's in SL today; they said they are helping collect AID for IDPs at local Buddhist Temples. It is JUST LIKE THE post-TSUNAMI aid that was collected and delivered to LTTE-held areas by the people in the South.

For security reasons, these people cannot go inside the IDP camps, only people authorized by Govt can do so, for good reason. The GOSL is depleting govt hospitals of doctors in the south and are sending them to help the IDPs.

Two of my nephews, out of three brothers who are all young medical doctors, are working in IDP camps. BTW, the Muslim doctor who was assasinated by the LTTE was their boss; and they were VERY upset by that.

As Moshe said, Sadhu Sri Sri Ravi Shankar who visited the IDP camps after the rescue of the 130,000 refugees from Puthumathalan, but before the remaining 50,000 or so were rescued from the truncated NFZ, said "the IDP camps in SL are much better than those in INDIA"; and the Indian IDP camps are PERMANENT ones that have been operating for years!

So, whose information on IDPs are you LISTENING to? The real story on Bab Ki Moon's comments will soon be clarified by the UN itself...wait...have patience...understyand that this is a propaganda war against the GOSL.

FINALLY, I REPEAT:

Why don't you THINK OF SOME SOLUTIONS, and make some CONCRETE SUGGESTIONS on what WE at DW could do MORE to help IDPs. Also, come up with some ideas that the GOSL could implement, and if they are good, I will pass them onto the GOSL.

As far as what I have done personally, I have donated cash and nonperishable food items to help IDPs. Not only that, the people in the town I live has donated lots of things to IDPs, not just once but several times. If you can go to SL today, I suggest you to visit hospitals in towns like Anuradhapura or Kurunegala. It is my first hand knowledge that many of the locals go to the hospitals every day with food and other supplies to IDPs. However, none of these are substitutes to settling my brothers and sisters in their homes. I know that the government is trying the best to clear the mines, bombs etc before IDPs get settled while filtering LTTE members from IDP centers. The other day, President talked about settling everybody in 180 days. I believe that 180 days is the most realistic time frame to settle our fellow citizens in their original villages. I also strongly encourage my fellow patriots living abroad to donate cash to "Northern Civilian Funds" without any delay. We need to help ourselves by helping to our brothers and sisters in distress. I hope that I provided you a satisfactory answer.

Patriots,

This is on the IDP's. Watched most of what is going on. I agree with GOSL, we need to screen and do it quickly, and before civilians go back clean up the land mines and also find buried weapons.

But in the mean time, we need to start setting up better structures as far as drainage, sanitation, medical facilities etc. We need to get going quickly before rains starts down the road and all the mosquito borne diseases come out.

This is the time government needs to talk to the IDP's tell them what went on etc. Ask them how things can be done till they go back to safe places etc.

I would not want the INGo's as they will start their mischief again.
But just sitting on our butts and talking about what needs to happen 10 years from now on will not help what needs to be done immediately.

We need some sense of measure as to how we are doing this. Like if the rate of illness are down, if the children are back to schooling, if the adults are given some understanding of what is expected of them as Sri Lanka citizens as much as what is responsibility of the Sri Lanka Government to the Sri Lanka citizens.

Keep in mind they were under LTTE for decades and and may not have any sense of how they relate to the rest of Sri Lanka. Now it is very easy to win the hearts and minds of these people as they are in few places - not scattered all over the vanni.

And finally, do not split hairs on wind energy, solar energy or what ever for the future. The situation is very fluid right now. Sri Lanka should grab it with both hands and not loose it.

SamThank you for your answer. I appreciate it. I know/ knew you were a fine fellow. :)

Ananda- USA, perhaps I over reacted, we will see. But the fact remains that VERY little of what SL is doing for the IDPs is becoming known to the world at large.

Now, you asked for my suggestions,. Here are my suggestions, based on my expertise (which is the media - BTW, I will not reveal my background but I can guarantee you that you know and have heard many times the name of the news media company I work for(
:)) :

1. First, get a PR/MEDIA policy in place. The world needs to know how SL is helping the IDPs, RIGHT NOW. The stories of the common person from the SL south, helping the IDPs, are GOLD.

Take these to the world media.

2. MR is a great man; I believe that. But tell him to appear in a few American interviews, in a 'freestyle manner'. The impact will be amazing.

3. Find stories of the SLA helping the common person - quickly, and disseminate these to the new media. These stories are also gold.

4. Put the bitterness to a side; if you cannot, try and make MEDIA driven gestures to the tamil diaspora - for example, an appeal (it is useless if it is not media supported) to the diaspora to help IDPs.

If the diaspora responds, great. If it does not, the world will remember.

If the world does not remember, SL government will make sure that the world does not forget!

5. Most of all GET A PR/ MEDIA POLICY IN PLACE.

You guys have won the war; now win the peace.

You seem to be very much concerned about IDP camps and displaced people living there. Do not forget that these people were with LTTE willingly or unwillingly for more than 06 months to date with much more poorer conditions. They were running continuously from place to place while ducking for shells and mortars from both sides. At least they are not running now, no shells or mortars to haunt them. They have secure place to live with food medicine and medical facilities. They must bear security procedures for next few months which will be for their own good.

As the time goes by conditions will improve and more facilities will be available.

Also do not forget there thousands of other people living in SL and India without a shelter, food and medicine conveniently available to them like in this IDP case. They are better off than most of other poor people who were silently gone through all the hardships due to the war.

They stopped all the financial help given to us (including Japan) around two years back in order to screw our war effort and as a result we had to go to Iran, and seek high interest loans from banks to find money for our survival.
Now, let’s think for a moment.
Were we to take a pro-Israel stance or were to follow the middle path would not have made the pro-Israel block change their mind and stop screwing us. But it would have made Muslim countries polarizing against us. If that was the case our economy would have collapsed already. We would definitely loose UNHRC resolution today. It would have been suicidal.
So it looks like we were forced to take an anti Israel stance in some cases for our own survival. It is not very disciplined and I am not happy with it. But was the most correct thing to do considering the mess we were in. As a result Israel did not loose anything and we earned a chance to survive.
If we decided to do the opposite, still, Israel wouldn't have lost or gained anything and we would have lost everything.

GE,

fully agree.

it is clearly true and we had HIGH PROFILE violators too!!

this joke must stop.

tamil madu with a population density of 511 persons per sq km is overcrowded.

SL's pop density is around 320.

SL's NORTH pop density is around 110.

so it is VERY attractive for tamil nadu, etc. ppl to come to SL STILL.

according to govt sources there are AT LEAST 100,000 tamil illegal immigrants from tamil nadu are there in the country. they are not those who stayed back from 1976, but those came to SL within the last 10 years.

securiting our boarders should be the NUMBER ONE security priority.

hemantha,

that is what prompted SL.

1. but SL was NOT pressurised by ANYONE at the WHO. very unlikely that an outsider pressurised SL bcos in that case they are not there to vote anyway.

there are only 2 arab countries in it now. they too are VERY MILD on israel.

the 34 as at now. (membership of this changes by rotation among 190+ WHO members.)

russian federation

sao tome and principe
singapore
slovenia
sri lanka
tunisia
turkey
uganda
united arab emirates
united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland
united states of america

2. even countries like china, russia would prefer to keep politics away from WHO although they supported the move this time. nimal siripala de silva had the support of the majority to become the chairman. seems like he used this power to push through the other resolution.

3. nimal siripala de silva bragged too much about israel since landing in SL which is not required.

4. VERY UNFORTUNATE that the TYPE, TIMING of the resolution conflicts with another UN body's agenda affecting SL.

anyway, as you said if SL had to do it, there's no choice but do it. its OUR survival that matters MOST after all.

but like mayil, ananda & nilambare said, we should seek behind the scene cooperation from israel now.

"Malaysia backs Sri Lankan resolution

Malaysia has expressed support for a draft resolution introduced by Sri Lanka at the Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva, in pursuant of Malaysia's principled position with regard to non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries.

Foreign Minister Datuk Anifah Aman said the members of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) and Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in the HRC had also expressed support for the Sri Lankan draft resolution based on the same principle.

The draft resolution relating to the situation in Sri Lanka reaffirmed the principles and purposes of the United Nations (UN), including the principles of non-interference in matters which were essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of states, he said in a statement.

"This is precisely the case with Sri Lanka, and it has the sovereign rights to undertake appropriate means in dealing with the internal situation, without the interference of other countries or the UN," Anifah said, adding that this important principle had been endorsed by NAM as well as OIC. "

[ This is on the IDP's.

Very well said, brother!

The IDPSs do need to understand thay their stay in the IDP camps IS IN THEIR INTEREST, and FOR THEIR PROTECTION, because:

1. Their tormentors, the LTTE need to be separated out

2. The land needs to be demined

3. The hidden arms need to be found

4. Military and police posts have to be re-establioshed to maintain law and order and ensure security

5. Basic government services such as post-offices, bus services, village councils, medical centers etc have to be setup

6. Food and other market centers have to be setup.

7. Food & other aid distribution centers have to be setup

8. Means for self-employment (e.g., farming) and/or small industries have to be set up; otherwise they will starve.

The ONLY PART of your post that I didn't agree with was about the discussions on energy self-sufficiency, education, communications etc for ensuring a prosperous self-sufficient future for Sri Lanka. These ideas take a LONG TIME to gell and gain acceptance, need to be sifted and discussed NOW.

IDPs: Govt. already acting on agreed areas of priority - President to Ban Ki-moonDefence.lk
May 25, 2009

The Government is already giving the highest priority to the issues raised by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon with regard to the massive influx of Internally Displaced Persons held hostage by the LTTE, and matters that have arisen following the defeat of LTTE terrorism, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa at their meeting at President's House, in Kandy today (May 23).

The Secretary General, who met the President after a visit to IDP relief villages in Vavuniya earlier today, said progress must come in three critical areas such as immediate humanitarian relief, followed by reintegration and reconstruction, leading to a sustainable and equitable political solution in Sri Lanka.

Responding to the Secretary General's observation that progress on all these areas must proceed in parallel, with the least delay, President Rajapaksa said these areas had already been recognized as those needing the highest priority, and that work was already in place to address them. He said there were still some aspects of security of the IDPs that had to be assured in view of the likely presence of LTTE infiltrators among the large numbers who had come to the Government areas. All action was being taken to ensure the safety of the IDPs, and to expedite their resettlement and reintegration into society.

President Rajapaksa said the Government was already working on a plan to resettle most of the IDPs within 180 days. He told the UNSG that all resettlement will be done under internationally accepted norms. This would require ensuring the safety of the IDPs, as well as their rehabilitation, and providing them with new skills for successful livelihood.

President Rajapaksa also said the Government was committed to a political solution, and for this purpose action would be taken based on the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.

The UN Secretary General who appreciated the conditions the relief village at Chettikulam that he visited earlier today, said there was room for improvement, which would require the wider assistance of the International Community. He understood the immense pressures brought on the Government as a result of the sudden arrival of such large numbers of people seeking relief, who had been held hostage for a long period.

The UN Secretary General requested the Government to allow greater access to international relief agencies that will be able to help with their experience and expertise. President Rajapaksa said that as conditions improved, especially with regard to security, there would be no objections to such assistance, from organizations that were genuinely interested in the well being of the IDPs and the needs of rehabilitation and reconstruction.

Mr. Ban Ki-moon assured President Rajapaksa that the UN would extend all assistance to Sri Lanka in facing up to this new challenge following the ending of hostilities in the country.

Over 10,000 ex-terrorists under Govt care

(By: Shanika SRIYANANDA)
Defence.lk
May 25, 2009

From the day the Wanni battle took a fierce turn over 10,000 LTTE terrorists surrendered to the military, according to top military officials.

The continuous defeats of the LTTE had made its cadres to abandon the outfit in large numbers. Over 7,237 terrorists who had surrendered to the military are now being rehabilitated at various rehabilitation centres. Among them are 1,601 females.

Another batch of 202 terrorists including 80 males are living in IDP camps. According to officials, they were identified by the military and separated from the refugees in the welfare camps. "They surrendered to the troops when the military offensives got tough. The 202 terrorists including females are well trained LTTE terrorists", they said. The officials said over 2,379 LTTE terrorists were identified by the military. Among them are terrorists who volunteered to surrender to the troops.

Over 2,065 males said that they surrendered to the troops at the Forward Defence Lines as they were disillusioned with their leadership. They had sensed the historic defeat and realised that the LTTE cadres had to fight to protect the life of the LTTE leader and not for Eelam. The terrorists who surrendered are provided with facilities and most of them have been sent to rehabilitation camps.

Over 271,967 refugees have sought protection under the Government. The majority of them who had been kept by the late LTTE leader as hostages fled the No Fire Zone in Puthumathalan despite the terrorists' tough warnings from April 20-22.

Having successfully concluded the world's biggest hostage rescue operation, the military saved the lives of over 180,000 people without firing a single round of bullets.

The IDPs are being facilitated in Government welfare centres in 29 locations, including Government schools.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Sri Lanka Army said that over 6,000 soldiers had sacrificed their lives and over 30,000 were injured.

According to sources, the LTTE suffered a loss of over 22,000 terrorists.

Can't we get one of the people who runs these camps to blog in to a site like this. Then we would be able to talk them and get a better understanding of what is going on.

What is the possibility of getting government to allow an individual to blog in to such well know site once a week or so on a know hour. So people are able to ask questions and get more information on what is happening. I think this would be a great way to make our departments efficient with ideas from all over the world.

One thing I never can understand is why they keep pregnant mothers, or mothers with 3 four young kids inside the camps.

Can't we release them to one of their relatives (and make the relative responsible for the person)? I mean what are the chances of one of them being a LTTE Terrorists? Even if they are, it is unlikely they would continue to do so now.

Ananda-USA said...

PATRIOTS,

It must be obvious to ALL PATRIOTS, the UNSEEMLY HURRY of the LTTE Diaspora, and those countries supporting them, to get the civilians resettled, is partly to

1. make sure resettlement before the necessary facilities and services are in place is a failure so that the IC and NGOs can make a case for inserting themselves into the country again, start setting up "administrations" of their own as independent sub-national groups subject to no law, and reporting to only foreign powers;

2. to prevent sufficient time for the hidden arms to be recovered by the SLA, so that the released civilians can get them and deliver them to the LTTE cadre;

3. to prevent a thorough screening and control of the IDPs for LTTE cadre;

4. to prevent the establishment of OMNIPRESENT military and police posts so that these activities can go unobserved;

5. to have foreign pro-LTTE "doctors" who can can continue to make false claims against GOSL personnel;

6. to create a foreign presence that can continue to "de-brief" the IDPs with false allegations, and sustain LTTE cadre as bona-fide' "civilians" to allow them to engineer manufactured "evidence" against the GOSL;

That is why, I am TOTALLY OPPOSED to the IC, INGOs and even local NGOs working within these camps.

The GOSL should take whatever funds IC and INGOs can provide, and employ staff, as temporary/permanent GOSL employees subject to the laws of Sri Lanka, to work within these camps.

The sponsors of this work, should only be taken on GUIDED TOURS of the camps accompanied by GOSL officers. Every visit, and every interview, must be accurately documented with Videos, OTHERWISE we will walk into a series of PROPAGANDA TRAPS being set for the GOSL ALL OVER AGAIN.

US Justice Dept. files "Motion to Dismiss" in IMF case
[TamilNet, Sunday, 24 May 2009, 11:45 GMT]
Responding to the law suit filed in the District Court of District of Columbia requesting to obtain a declaratory judgment to force the United States to oppose Sri Lanka’s pending IMF loan application, the lawyers representing the defendants, Timothy Geithner, Secretary of the Treasury, and Meg Lundsager, Executive Director of the IMF, filed a motion in the Court to dismiss the case on the grounds that the plaintiff has no standing, the court lacks jurisdiction, there is no private right of action to enforce "policy goals," and under federal law both defendants are immune from legal prosecution, Bruce Fein, counsel for the plaintiff said.

An "INSIDE STORY" from the NFZ

"LTTE took desperate measures in final hours"

By Srinath Prasanna Jayasuriya

DailyMirror.lk
May 25, 2009

* LTTE forcibly recruited children * Parents who opposed were attacked

While the LTTE was being surrounded by the advancing troops during the last phase of the war, the rebels are reported to have adopted desperate measures to recruit new cadres to their fold.

Naval rating G.H. Chaminda Kumara -- who was in LTTE custody with five other security forces personnel since November 2006 until they were rescued by the armed forces said some mothers took poison after their children were snatched away by the LTTE. Chaminda said about 5,000 LTTE cadres were able to flee the fighting with groups of civilians.

“Even the LTTE cadres who were tasked to guard us threw away their guns, cyanide capsules and the uniform to join thousands of civilians fleeing the No Fire Zone (NFZ). They had realized that they had no alternative but to escape to government controlled area, if they were to save their lives. They felt there was no point in fighting and there was no reason to perish in the face of the unstoppable military juggernaut and it was best to run for safety,” he said.

“Once, the tigers abducted a 20-year-old girl residing in a tsunami welfare village in the NFZ. She was a former LTTE cadre and was evading the terrorists. During a struggle between the girl’s family members and the LTTE cadres who were attempting to abduct her, the girl’s brother attacked two terrorists with a sword and killed them. The other terrorists then grabbed him and hacked him to death before taken the girl away.

“We saw how parents wept when their children were abducted. We could not bear to see the way the terrorists treated them when they pleaded and attempted to prevent their children from being abducted. They beat the family members with gun butts and poles. Those who attacked the Tigers were murdered in cold blood. A large number of parents committed suicide by setting themselves on fire taking poison as they could not endure the pain of seeing their children being taken away by the LTTE,” Chamida said.

Narrating his experiences under LTTE custody he said the terrorist outfit true to its history of brutality meted inhuman punishment to cadres who attempted to flee the organization.“They were chained to iron posts and hit with wires and Palmyra poles until their skins peeled off. Many of the victims succumbed to those injuries. There are instances where the wounds got infected without medicine and the victim suffered a horrible death. The LTTE killers were so inhumane that they refused to give a glass of water to their dying comrades, probably out of fear,” he recalled.

Chaminda said when the armed forces shelled Vadduwal the area where the six prisoners-of-war (POW) had been detained; the LTTE cadres appeared terribly frightened and took the six captives to another unknown place.

“We were brought to Pallimune and Kahapalama after the government declared the area as a No Fire Zone. There were four LTTE prisons set up at houses in the newly demarcated NFZ. About 400 to 600 inmates captured by the LTTE had been imprisoned at these four houses.

An "INSIDE STORY" from the NFZ (Continued)

G.H. Chaminda Kumara was captured by Tigers in 2006 while he was serving in the ship ‘Green Ocean’ at Point Pedro. On November 9, 2006 sea tigers launched an attack on Green Ocean at Point Pedro when it was transporting some civilians from Trincomalee to KKS.

Navy Dovra P461 and P416 were among the fleet of naval craft that attacked the Sea Tigers and the navy was able to save the Green Ocean and the other navy personnel. Dovra craft were attacked by the Sea Tigers and four navy cadres fell to the sea and were captured by the Tigers. G.H. Chaminda Kumara Hewage, P.D.K Vijaya Kumara, K.H.K.A. Kumarasiri and Anil Priyantha were taken into Tiger custody.

Chaminda said four of them were blindfolded and brought to the Tiger’s Peace Secretariat at Kilinochchi and produced before Pulidevan. Anil Priyantha was admitted to the Kilinochchi hospital as he was severely injured. The three of us were questioned for hours and imprisoned in Kaunaipuram. There were 50 to 60 others in that prison on charges of murder and women abuse. The camp comprised an eight-roomed house and was well guarded.

He said they were given pittu and brinjal curry for breakfast. Rice and curry for lunch and rice or bread for dinner.

“We spent nearly two years in the camp and were able to see our family members with the intervention of the ICRC. There was information that humanitarian operations were successful. Our camp area was bombed and the Tiger leader Lieutenant Colonel Aravindan shifted the camp to Mullaitivu. There were about 70 prisoners in a single room about 10 feet by 10 feet in size. There were about 300-400 prisoners most of whom were those who attempted to flee from the Tigers.

He said some Tiger-defectors whom they spoke to said this was an un-winnable war and were caught when attempting to flee. They were subjected to untold suffering and torture.

When the tiger bastions were falling one by one the number of escapees increased beyond control. Hundreds of tigers were killed by the army.

“We gathered information from Tiger higher-ups. Some of them were optimistic while many others sounded pessimistic.

With the army approaching the NFZ, the detainees were remanded at Pudumattalan Tiger police station and were later shifted to an under ground jail about 200 meters from where the Jordanian ship “Para 3” was marooned.

The provision of food gradually deteriorated and meals were confined only to gruel for all three meals

Violence Spreads in Punjab: Army called in

ExpressBuzz.com
May 25, 2009

JALANDHAR / AMBALA: Several parts of Punjab continued to be on the boil Monday with trains burnt and key highways blocked as violence by followers of the Dera Sachh Khand, opposing the attack on sect leaders in the Austrian capital Vienna, spread and brought the state to a standstill.

Armed with sticks, swords, bricks and stones, sect followers came out in large numbers in Punjab's Doaba belt and tension spread in Jalandhar, Phagwara, Hoshiarpur and Nawanshahr towns.

Curfew was imposed by the district authorities in Hoshiarpur town, 150 km from Chandigarh, following violence by members of the sect, who are from the Dalit Sikh community and followers of Guru Ravidass, as news came in of a top leader dying of his injuries following a clash in a Vienna gurdwara Sunday.

Protests also spread to neighbouring Haryana where sect followers blocked with trees the Chandigarh-Delhi National Highway No. 1 near Kingfisher resort, and squatted on the road.

Angry crowds continued to hold several areas in Jalandhar district to ransom despite curfew being imposed in the entire district Sunday night.

Train bogies were torched at the Jalandhar Cantonment station, a key highway blocked and vehicles and shops set afire. No police personnel were present on the spot when the protesters torched railway property. Trains were also attacked in Phagwara town, 20 km from Jalandhar.

Sect leader Sant Rama Nand, 57, the second-in-command, died in a hospital in the Austrian capital Vienna, following an armed attack involving rival Sikh groups at a gurdwara the previous day. The attack also left at least 16 people injured.

The condition of the sect head Sant Niranjan Dass, 68, who was the second guest guru speaking at the Vienna gurdwara, was stable after undergoing emergency surgery, doctors there said.

The violence that had begun with news of the attack Sunday reignited with Sant Rama Nand's death.

Punjab Police and district authorities remained mute spectators at several points where the protesters resorted to violence. At the Amritsar bus stand, just a handful of policemen were present when youth damaged state transport and private buses and other vehicles.

There were reports that even vehicles of police officials were targeted by mobs in this city.

Other towns also remained tense after a night of violence. Most areas in the state came to a standstill as shops and other commercial establishments did not open Monday morning fearing violence from the sect protesters.

Protests and violence were also reported from Patiala, Ludhiana and Bathinda with government and private property being damaged.

Road and railway traffic was severely affected in Jalandhar district and adjoining areas. Protesters blocked National Highway (NH) No. 1 between Jalandhar and Phagwara at several places. Railway traffic on this busy route between Delhi and Jammu was also crippled.

Vehicles, shops and other property were damaged by the protesters by either setting them on fire or in stone-pelting. Burning tyres and road blocks could be seen at several places.

The Dera Sachh Khand sect has considerable following among Dalit Sikhs across Punjab, especially in the Doaba belt (between rivers Sutlej and Beas).

The ruling Akali Dal in Punjab has called for a shutdown across the state to protest the Vienna incident.

Government spokesperson Harcharan Bains said that the Punjab government was doing everything to keep the volatile situation under control.

This (violence) involves religious sentiments of the people. The government will take appropriate action as required, Bains told media in Chandigarh.

Moshe
You are right there are illegal migrations from TN as I myself witnessed it in early 60s in Jaffna when we had our business there and paid a heavy price for exposing it and the punishment was vetted out by the likes of Bradman Weerakoon who was the Private Sec to Dudley S.They deported my business friend while coming from Jaffna where the top jobs of the Immigration was held by the Jaffna Tamils. Most of the smugglers from VVT are from TN and in fact they took us to some place in TN in a fast boat and we couldn’t believe our eyes how we could enter another country without a passport and VP is from that lot from TN.
We saw at least 20 to 30 illegal immigrants landing in the evening when the tide was out. Top cop there was furious when we brought this to the notice of him similarly when we brought a similar incident when we saw infiltrations to Katharagama areas soon after Toppigala affair we were told by the top cops there to mind our own business or get back to UK.

Sky Sat TV is just showing in Ch 531-Miltary History where the real footage of the US troopers executing North Korean soldiers where they were tied behind their back and shot on the head. One of the troopers named Blanchard was narrating this on film with real footage where he refused to execute the last remaining North Koreans and they were handed over to the South Korean troops. This was a war crime but it was perhaps appropriate due to the situation there where they were in a dangerous mine field where their ability to control or secure these unfortunate prisoners. So US must understand the ground situations in SL without making a fuss over Sri Lankan affairs where that island had been fighting one of the worst terrorist outfits.

Dear wijayapala,

“How many Tamils do you think will get killed over the next 25 years, compared to those who were killed over the last 25?”

That’s a nonsensical comparison from the vantage of my argument, since those killed over the last 25 years include the 7000+ casualties of the last 6 months, which I argued against, not for, by supporting the ceasefire calls.

The number of innocent Tamils and Sinhalese who will be killed over the next 25 years will depend on how long it takes people to end communalism and tyranny in SL politics. The manner in which this war has ended will, I think, make this harder, not easier, to achieve.

“By shelling the SLA for however long you think appropriate to sit and wait for the LTTE to release the civilians.”

How would the LTTE have been able to keep shelling the SLA indefinitely, with the arms embargo the SLDF and international community had imposed?

“In any case I am more interested in hearing what the UTHR has to say about the East, rather than another ignorant western journalist.”

UTHR has sort of dropped the ball of late. From what I can see, it’s only released 3 bulletins in the last 2 years, despite a huge upsurge in human rights violations by both the LTTE and SLA in that period. HRW, on the other hand, has been doing a very good job at consistently and vociferously charting human rights abuses, and has not had much nice to say about the situation in the East. Can you name and cite any independent organisations that have praised what has happened in the East over the last few years? The Island and SPUR don’t count.

“Things shifted by the end of the CFA, though. The Tamils felt betrayed by the LTTE which had first promised peace but then started screaming about iruthi por. The people had already known that the LTTE could never win militarily and could only suck their children into an endless pit. That is why virtually no one stepped forward on behalf of the LTTE in recent years.”

There has certainly been growing disenchantment with the LTTE, but this has not translated into increasing esteem for the SLG. This is why the GOSL is current imprisoning hundreds of thousands of its supposed citizens in concentration camps, and not allowing any independent aid organisations into those camps to ask them how they feel about what’s going on.

For all your meandering, at the end of the day, you have lined yourself squarely behind a government that veils itself in secrecy. By supporting a government whose modus operandi is secrecy, you have essentially given it a carte blanche to do whatever it likes. I am sure that you are clever enough to know very well what it is doing with those priveleges. So when all the sorry stories of SLA war crimes surface in the months and years to come – and they have already started – that will be for your conscience to deal with.

“Then you clearly don't seem to know much about the east. The LTTE conscripted children by the thousands per year to feed the northern war. How does that compare with the number of children currently at large in the TMVP????”

Can you provide a credible source indicating that the LTTE conscripted children by the “thousands per year”? More importantly, can you show that they were recruiting at this rate in the period 2006-2009, since this was the period with which we are comparing GOSL-backed Karuna?

Funny thing is that now that the LTTE is gone, only SLA-backed Karuna keeps child soldiers. How are you enjoying that company? I hear they are having a field day recruiting children in the newly formed concentration camps, too. Is this your idea of liberation?

“You're absolutely right- the LTTE has done so much to improve things for the Tamils. I wish I had figured that out.”

Where did I ever imply that I believe that? It’s perfectly possible to argue that the LTTE and GOSL have both been equally inept at improving the lot for the average Tamil (and Sinhalese). And that is what I'm arguing. By criticising the SLG mercilessly, I needn’t rub shoulders with the LTTE.

Reasonably Treasonable said...

Dear wijayapala,

(cont.)

“You have a very good point, but you haven't shown how things would be better with an intact LTTE in control of the north (and/or east), a situation which would require a large number of soldiers in any case. At least now we have an excuse to demobilize the SLA, slowly in stages of course.”

You believe that the “peace” that has been achieved through war will create an atmosphere conducive to democratisation of SL politics, de-militarisation etc. My own argument is not much different – had, for instance, an LTTE statelet/regional autonomous zone been established in the North/East (or, if you take the more minimalist position I’ve argued for in the last few posts, just a few square km of land in the NE…), and a situation of relative peace prevailed (like during the CFA period), then the Tamils in LTTE territory would be less willing to stand idly by while the Tigers trampled over them. The LTTE would lose its “excuse” for its brutal measures (and in the South, so would the GOSL). Of course, the fight wouldn’t be easy – on the contrary, it would be damn hard. But so was the war. And at least, in this case, the right people would be fighting, and for the right reasons.

“Killing Fonseka wouldn't end the war, because he's not in charge of the govt. You missed my point about democratic systems vs. non-democratic.”

He’s not in charge of the govt, but it would be hard to deny that if Fonseka, and, say, his closest circle of advisors, had been assassinated early in the piece, the war would not have taken a different turn. Or that killing military leaders at certain critical junctures can reduce enemy morale, and score decisive victories, even in democracies. I’m not saying that these things justify suicide bombings that kill civilians – but apparently you are.

“BTW, did the IC find anything "morally objectionable" to the attempted killing of Fonseka which did result in other people's deaths?? Or the killing of dozens of soldiers in December 2005 during the CFA?”

I can’t speak for the IC, but I can speak for myself. Yes, I found those actions appalling, and I feel very badly for all the people killed and their families.

I'm very happy for whatever remains of the LTTE to be tried in person or absentia for the many war crimes committed by that outfit over the years. Just as GOSL and SLA figures responsible for war crimes should be.

Rivira gives a good account of the final battle. It says that Karuna identifed Fat pig by a wart on the right leg as I had surmised before. Also, as I said, the carcass was undressed for this purpose.

The poor guy had been hiding in the Kadolana grove like a terrifed rat throughout the night and had gone without any dinner too. (sob!)

Also Note the following:

1) SACRIFICE: Whatever other faults FP may have the, lack of wilingness to make sacrifices for the cause is not one of them. See how he sacrificed his favorite dinner of Mutton Curry & String Hoppers (MC & SH) that fateful night.

2) SELFLESSNESS: What a selfless leader FP is! He never failed to serve (MC & SH) to the suicide zombies. But when his time came he there was no one to do that for him.

Lots of talk about IDP but very little speak about War Heroes. Are we missing the point here?

DW was thoroughly focused on the war and all of us came here to read about that. Now that the war is over, there is hardly any talk about the "Unknown Soldier".

My suggestion is that Ananda-USA could concentrate on IDP & Renewable Energy; Sam Perera could become the spokesman for War Heros and Apino could continue to be the "pigslayer". Others could assume suitable roles.

We folks, standing on the kerbside, could applaud, encourage and enable not only our mavericks but War Heroes, too.

If someone could write about a War Hero and give some information about their situation and how to support them: where to make a donation directly to the War Hero or his/her family, then I could make a small donation every month when I get paid. I think others would join in - a little drop by many people could make the bucket full and overflow.

If there is a photo of the War Hero, then we could start creating an on-line memorial too.

Thanks!

Myth of 'Living Prabhakaran'

Paris, 26 May, (Asiantribune.com): While the top diaspora members fight over the future strategy of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the Tamil professionals and commercial establishments in Europe have expressed disgust over 'utterly selfish motives' of the LTTE’s Department of Diaspora Affairs (DDA). They were referring to the DDA’s statement that the 'LTTE leadership is safe and it will re-emerge when the right time comes.'

"The DDA has kept on feeding us stories that Tigers would fight back and deal a fatal blow to the Sri Lankan army and collected thousands of EUROs for various emergency funds," stated Gopal Sivarasa, a trader in Tamil predominant La Chapelle in Paris. "Even last week we donated funds after the tiny beachhead of Mulaithivu was encircled by the Sri Lankan army. The DDA said that they wanted funds for missiles for the final assault which will kill 'thousands of soldiers.' Because we had hopes against hope, we donated as much as we could. I wonder where all that money is?" he lamented.

Another trader, who did not disclose his name, wanted the French police to investigate into the affairs of DDA which included extortion, intimidation and money laundering. "I am sure large part of the funds went into their pockets," he said furiously. "That is why the DDA says Prabhakaran is alive. The whole world including LTTE leaders such as Kumaran (Selvaraja) Pathmanathan knows the truth that Prabhakaran was killed on May 17."

It is apparent that the LTTE dispora leadership is split on future strategies. While Pathmanathan has acknowledged the death of Prabhakaran in an interview with BBC, the LTTE’s DDA wants to keep the myth alive to ensure future fund collections. The DDA got hold of LTTE mouthpiece Tamilnet, which carried a statement that "the Tamil national cause cannot afford to be deviated and exploited by others through questions such as whether the LTTE leader V. Pirapaharan is alive or not or whether the armed struggle has to be continued or not. The Tamil diaspora, the only section of the Eezham Tamil community that has the freedom and means to come out with authentic voice, has a historic responsibility in telling the world what they aspire for in no uncertain terms, and in seeing their righteous cause not hijacked by their enemies."

It is evident hat the DDA believes that Pathmanathan is 'hijacking' the organization and he is ‘the enemy’.

Pathmanathan, as the head of the LTTE’s Department of International Relations, on Sunday announced that the LTTE Leader Velupillai Pirapaharan attained 'martyrdom fighting the military oppression of the Sri Lankan state on 17 May.' However, the LTTE’s Department for Diaspora Affairs (DDA) told TamilNet that it would not comment without explicit authorisation from the LTTE leadership. In the meantime, the Intelligence Department of the Tigers reiterated on Sunday that the LTTE leadership is safe and it will re-emerge when the right time comes.

The DDA has funded the election campaigns of Tamil Nadu politicians such as V Gopalasamy alias Vaiko of MDMK and Pazha Nedumaran of Kamraj Congress. Hence they immediately expressed scepticism Sunday on the reports of Mr. Pirapaharan's demise, thus supporting the DDA.

"Whoever emerges victorious in this leadership struggle, we will not donate a cent hereafter," says Kumarappah Nathan of the phone-card shop at La Chapelle. "We have been fooled many times but we continued to contribute as long as Prabhakaran was alive and the LTTE held territory. Now any contribution is just like throwing water in the river".

Many Tamil diaspora members pointed out that evidence for Pirapaharan's demise was conclusive. "There is no doubt about Prabhakaran’s body and the Sri Lankan military displayed it as proof it had won a quarter-century civil war," Gopal said. "Now we have accepted that and we will send remittances to our poor relations in the north and no more donations for the LTTE".

Max Headroom said...

Patriots,

This is an extract from a post written by Karu Jayasuriya at Transcurrents by DBSJ:

"In our haste to celebrate, let us not forget those who made the celebrations possible – the members of the armed forces who lost life and limb in this war against terror. Let us ensure that the families of those who sacrificed their lives on the battlefield are cared for; that those who sustained injuries and are disabled today are provided for; that those who died so that we could live are never forgotten."

For us, who have watched all celebrations and glorifications here in Sri Lanka, no one has show cased them.

How would it have been if General Sarath Fonseka and H.E, the President bestowed all those "Nambu Namas" on the valiant, brave and highly motivated combatants of the SLDF, without whom this victory would not have been possible? That would have been, more than a symbolic gesture and more fitting than kneeling on the tarmac of KIA.

Where they failed - earlier it was the three-wheeler General - we, mere mortals could/should make a fitting, ever lasting contribution to our war heroes? Could someone point me/us in the right direction?

Thank you very much!

Bravo, brother!

You can make contributions at

http://www.RanaViruFund.org

very conveniently, ONLINE.

They have several programs:

1. To provide Medical Equipment for Veterans Hospitals (like at Ragama), and Gel Socks for Amputees. You can contribute any amount ONLINE.

2. Sponsor Rana Viru kids education. You can signup to contribute at least $10/mth for 4 years or pay up front for the entire period. It is all explained at the site.

3. Donate hospital beds

Many at DW, including myself, already contribute to these causes. I contribute monthly to the Medical Equipment program, and sponsor multiple kids as well.

If you are interested in contributing to IDPs welfare, a convenient way to do that is through

http://www.futuresrilanka.com

This program sends food, especially milk for babies and kids, through Maliban Industries. I contribute to that too.

A customer enters a pest shop.

Customer: 'Ello, I wish to register a complaint.

(The owner does not respond.)

C: 'Ello, Miss?

Owner: What do you mean "miss"?

C: I'm sorry, I have a cold. I wish to make a complaint!

O: We're closin' for lunch.

C: Never mind that, my lad. I wish to complain about this Praba what I purchased not half an hour ago from this very boutique.

O: Oh yes, the, uh, the Norwegian Blue,...What's,uh...What's wrong with it?

C: I'll tell you what's wrong with it, my lad. 'E's dead, that's what's wrong with it!

O: No, no, 'e's uh,...he's resting.

C: Look, matey, I know a dead Praba when I see one, and I'm looking at one right now.

O: No no he's not dead, he's, he's restin'! Remarkable bird, the Norwegian Blue, idn'it, ay? Beautiful plumage!

C: The plumage don't enter into it. It's stone dead.

O: Nononono, no, no! 'E's resting!

C: All right then, if he's restin', I'll wake him up!

(shouting at the cage)

'Ello, Mister Polly Praba! I've got a lovely fresh cuttle fish for you if you show...(owner hits the cage)

O: There, he moved!

C: No, he didn't, that was you hitting the cage!

O: I never!!

C: Yes, you did!

O: I never, never did anything...

C: (yelling and hitting the cage repeatedly) 'ELLO Prabby!!!!!

Testing! Testing! Testing! Testing! This is your nine o'clock alarm call!

(Takes Praba out of the cage and thumps his head on the counter. Throws it him in the air and watches him plummet to the floor.)

C: Now that's what I call a dead Praba.

O: No, no.....No, 'e's stunned!

C: STUNNED?!?

O: Yeah! You stunned him, just as he was wakin' up! Norwegian Blues stun easily, major.

C: Um...now look...now look, mate, I've definitely 'ad enough of this. That Praba is definitely deceased, and when I purchased it not 'alf an hour ago, you assured me that its total lack of movement was due to it bein' tired and shagged out following a prolonged squawk.

O: Well, he's...he's, ah...probably pining for the fjords.

C: PININ' for the FJORDS?!?!?!? What kind of talk is that?, look, why did he fall flat on his back the moment I got 'im home?

O: The Norwegian Blue prefers kippin' on it's back! Remarkable bird, id'nit, squire? Lovely plumage!

C: Look, I took the liberty of examining that Praba when I got it home, and I discovered the only reason that it had been sitting on its perch in the first place was that it had been NAILED there.

(pause)

O: Well, o'course it was nailed there! If I hadn't nailed that bird down, it would have nuzzled up to those bars, bent 'em apart with its beak, and VOOM! Feeweeweewee!

C: "VOOM"?!? Mate, this bird wouldn't "voom" if you put four million volts through it! 'E's bleedin' demised!

O: No no! 'E's pining!

C: 'E's not pinin'! 'E's passed on! This Praba is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker!

'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If you hadn't nailed 'im to the perch 'e'd be pushing up the daisies!

'Is metabolic processes are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig!

'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!!

THIS IS AN EX-PRABA!!

(pause)

O: Well, I'd better replace it, then.

(he takes a quick peek behind the counter)

O: Sorry squire, I've had a look 'round the back of the shop, and uh, we're right out of Prabas.

C: I see. I see, I get the picture.

O: I got a slug.

(pause)

C: (sweet as sugar) Pray, does it talk?

O: Nnnnot really.

C: WELL IT'S HARDLY A BLOODY REPLACEMENT, IS IT?!!???!!?

O: Look, if you go to my brother's pet shop in West Ham, he'll replace the Praba for you.

C:West Ham, eh? Very well.

We should back Sri Lankan fight with terror

By Bernard Dineen
[Yorkshirepost.co.uk]
May 25, 2009

The Palace of Westminster has been under virtual siege for weeks from mobs of Tamils in Parliament Square. They have tried to break through police cordons in protests about the assault on the Tamil Tiger separatists by the Sri Lankan army.

This is just the latest example of foreign conflicts being inflicted on us in Britain. Most of the 250,000 Tamils who have entered Britain have no right to be here. If they were genuinely fleeing persecution, they could cross the straits into southern India, when they would be in Tail Nadu, their Tamil-speaking homeland. But the Indian Government is not stupid and has no intention of encouraging them. Once again, Britain is the soft touch. In many ways, we have only ourselves to blame by portraying the Tamil Tigers as gallant freedom-fighters instead of the terrorist thugs they really are.

The BBC has persistently encouraged this picture by its sympathetic portraying of the terrorists. Pictures of Tamil refugees in Sri Lanka are heartbreaking, but the blame for their misery lies squarely with the Tiger leadership, notably the ruthless dictator, Velupillai Prabhakaran. He has established a death cult, training suicide bombers, and child soldiers. One suicide bomber killed 90 and injured 1,500. The Tigers murdered the Indian Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi, in 1991 and blew up the Sri Lankan president. At times, they were more than a match for the Sri Lankan army, but the government held firm and has now defeated the terrorists, killing their leader. The Indian Government has imposed a naval blockade on the Tigers.

Whenever they were in retreat, there were anguished calls for a ceasefire from people like David Milliband. Instead, we should support the Sri Lankan government in its attempt to build a united country and defeat terrorism.

But when you listen to HRC, HRW, AI all the westerners and their stooges are. Now to me this looks like the modern day imperialist. It is just like saying you brown skins do not know shit. But we the superior types have all the answers.

I think the GOSL should call a spade a spade. I am heartened MR and GR are setting the stage to get some respect on this.

We also need to tell the world very clearly why there is an issue as some INGO's clearly collaborated with the LTTE terrorist.

They may be wanting to get their people out before it is found out.

Anyways, SL name will be dragged through the mud many times in the future. We need to be steady and also need to take care of the IDP to the best of Sri Lanka's ability - do it in a way all Sri Lankans can be proud of being Sri Lankans.

MD,

VP actually side lined KP sometime back. During last few weeks of ealam; KP got hold of Eric Soleheim and persuaded Eric to call VP and make amendments. Due to pressure from Eric VP appointed KP as international spokesperson as well as LTTE leader in absence of VP.

Hard core LTTE supporters now suspect KP for betrayal of their leadership in the 11th hour. They will try to eliminate KP for us. Faction fight is assured as lot of money involved. LTTE mafia in the west will not give up that easily. KP will be a marked man and he has to hide from his own followers now.

GOSL should get the UNSG Ban Ki-moon
to clarify if he really said what he said about the IDP camps.

UNSG says thing not very clearly - could be a language issue. But, GOSl being at the receiving end of it should ask him to clarify it.

Why because we are hearing two story lines, one states he UNSG said what he said when he saw the area of conflict. The other states he said etc etc when he saw the IDP camps.

Overall they are trying to screw SL with words. Same way that Gasbag Navi Pillay did it.

Patriots,

I smell a rat here. Either Pottu killed VP and vanished into Mulatiev jungles with Castro or SLA is keeping them alive for information etc.

I will not believe Pottu is dead until it is confirmed by SLA because he is a master of disguise and could deceive his own mother, if he wants. Without him mission is not accomplished!

---------------------
Mate, give it a rest.
If he has escaped, it is because our army wanted him to escape. Stop worrying. LTTE is irrelevant now. After few years time no one even know who LTTE was.

Thusitha,

Let us hope that you are correct but do not forget Pottu is the most wanted man to SLA after VP or even more than VP.

He is also capable of rekindling LTTE hopes out side Sri Lanka. His knowledge and experience about the organisation and its network is very dangerous for peace in our mother land.

That is why I said “mission is not accomplished without killing Pottu”.

[ Patriots,

I want to pose a question to all.

INGO's keep stating that GOSL should give access to NGO's. Then few weeks ago same crowd was stating no independent reporters in the conflict zone etc.

So the issue is --> "Are Sri Lankans are not good enough to look after their own people? Are are not independent enough to report on our country's happenings?

...........]

Brother, you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT: We are perfectly capable of doing everything that is needed to take care of BOTH the IDPs, and our NATIONAL SECURITY.

Rhe UN, ICRC etc want to be assured of two things:

1. the IDPs are getting the assistance they need
2. the GOSL is IN FACT handling it satisfactorily.

AND, that should be their ONLY ROLE in Sri Lanka.

They don't care a DAMN for our SECURITY NEEDS.

That is why I wrote a post yesterday, and another one about a month ago, recommending that the GOSL require ALL aid given by IC to be delivered to the GOSL, and that the GOSL employ temporary & permanent staff to undertake the work. No foreign employees need come to acquire a VESTED interest in keeping the pot boiling. After all, our people need good jobs too...much more than these foreigners.

To satisfy the "CONCERNS" 1 & 2, the GOSL should setup and assign a group of people the FULL TIME JOB of conducting GUIDED TOURS for these "Humanitarian Organizations" and "Sponsors". The GUIDED TOURS and INTERVIEWS with IDPs should be recorded accurately on Video, and no unescorted visits by them should be allowed.

The ONLY LEGITIMATE role of the IC reps is that of observing, not DOING any of the work, and certainly not cooking up false allegations on surreptious unescorted visits.

They are demanding "unimpeded access" as if they have any rights to do mischief as they please in this sovereign country.

Patriots, having been to Scarborough Toronto- I can tell you LTTE has lots business under normal peoples name.

The owners of these stores are either very stingy, or very upright people who do not care for money or people who do not own the stores.

I am saying that because they do not act the part. Need to admit this is all observations from afar - I do not know Tamil to converse with any of them and frankly I would be killed if I ask the questions I want to ask - being a normal Sri Lankan.

But now think what will happen when the owner/ I prefer to call the enforcer LTTE is not there to enforce the profit sharing plan.

Now who is going to take the legally registered owner to court saying I need my share of the business profit? Well Vesapillai is in hell with the rest of the mafia - so no way of threatening the Sri Lanka based elatives. A call to government of Sri Lanka will also get the enforcers in Sri Lanka out of the picture very quickly.

So the fun is about to start in Scarborough. I feel sorry for the Canadians. LTTE really took them for a "Parangiya kotte giya wage" ride. Also keep in mind ordinary Tamils were forced to part with their earnings. What happens once they start asking for their money back - million dollar question is where is their money. Money look the same no identifing mark.
