A game of wits and guts

As the Avenues of Approach led by the 53, 58 and TF-8 troops make the treacherous journey north to south along Valairmadam and Vellamullaivaikkaal, the 59 Division, which is the closest Division to the LTTE Leader Prabhakaran's final hideout, seems to be gearing for a surprise.

The recent temporary transfer of Brigadier Prasanna Silva, undoubtedly the best soldier among all the military commanders on the ground, last Friday as the field commander for the 59 Division is a classic case of the Army Commander winning the game of wits and guts over his 'counterpart'.

The 59 Division ended their offensive operations soon after the capture of Mullaitivu Town where they are positioned todate. The coastline from Mullaitivu Town north towards Vellamullaivaikkaal is a challenging terrain.

The Nanthikadal lagoon has to be crossed via the Vattuwaan bridge immediately north of Mullaitivu Town, which is booby trapped. Any attempt to cross this lagoon requires exceptional military genius; one that Prasanna has demonstrated again and again starting from a surprise amphibious assault on Vakarai to the 65km advance from Nagarkovil, via Chalai with very low casualties.

One of the very few, true Special Forces officers available to us (Direct enlistment as a young officer), Brigadier Silva has excelled in the use of 2 and 3 Special Forces units, specially the Combat Divers for sea-borne attacks.

The decision by the Army Commander to hand-over the reigns of the 59 Division comes as no surprise. The LTTE leadership, undoubtedly, is quite weary of this officer, particularly the Sea Tigers, who despite many attempts, were unable to set foot on the 65km coastline Prasanna captured and retains until today.

The move to appoint Brigadier Silva is particularly interesting given recent intelligence reports that the LTTE leadership was planning a daring escape towards the Mullaitivu Jungles, particularly to the Kumburupiddi Jungles north of Trincomalee Town. A platoon from 4 SF has already been deployed in the area as a precaution.

It is thought that Brigadier Prasanna Silva, as the head of the 59 Division, would be the best deterrence against such a move. If the LTTE was indeed planning such a move, it is high time they reconsidered their decision.

Brigadier Silva's little known (publicly) exploits included the coordination of LRRP/LRS operations from Vavuniya when he was a Lt. Colonel. A particularly camera and publicity-shy individual, Prasanna Silva is highly respected by the Special Forces and also by Military Intelligence.

A simple and down-to-earth man, Brigadier Silva often performs his own observations of enemy lines before any major assault and can often be seen making battle preparations under a tree or at some other location from within the battlefield itself. Any other one-star General would consider this unsuitable or unfitting his status.

I don't know this is a U turn or a switching to next gear from BBC.

News is "The leader of the indigenous community of Sri Lanka, known as Veddahs, has said that his group of people is being threatened by illegal tree-fellers."

Headline is "Sri Lanka minority 'threatened'"

So funny... BBC is now good example for pro-LTTE sponsors post war bankruptcy.

Anyway BBC has promoted Veddas also to the 'minority' level. So another competitor for tamizs..

Moshe Dyan said...

pattavelu,

israel itself is in MULTIPLE wars and the last thing they can do is to promote another war!!!

it has not given "some weapons" to SL, but VERY IMPORTANT & QUALITY weapons. that's not all, israel is the ONLY country to give SL TECHNOLOGY.

the israel-palestine issue is a complex one. at one point it was called palestine but at another point in history it was called israel. anyway when moshe liberated israelites from slavery in egypt, they came to the "promised land" which was not necessarily theirs before. but since then, until attacked by arabs, it was their land.

today there are palestinians living in israel (just like SL). they even have a MP in kneset!! BUT not otherwise. no jews are allowed to live in palestine and no jewish MPs in palestinian parliament!!! very much like SL. SL for all sri lankans (sinhala, tamil, muslim, etc.) but tamil elam ONLY for tamils!!

re: NFZ

we KNEW at the time we declared the safe zone that LTTE COWARDS will be the first to creep in it. we should have planned that in mind.

but the northern half of the NFZ was not problamatic as the current piece.

nilambare,

good points.

israeli technology transfer is not only hardware technology. it was also about "understanding terrorists". some of these tactics are morally controvercial but SL has used them.

there is DEEP understanding between the 2 countries. the UAVs, etc. were the result of this.

but as it happens, SL balances it well in SL's favour fantastically by being ALSO close to palestine.

[ if the structure is 360 foot long, it is DEFINITELY NOT a submarine vessel (that travels).]

Maybe I didn't make the MOBILE alternative clear: what if the 360 foot structure is sub-divided into several watertight COMPARTMENTS each, say, 30 feet long , like SMALL TRAIN CARS. They can be hinged to each other like TRAIN CARS, allowing easy dismantling from the TRAIN; i.e., removing adding COMPARTMENTS/CARS, as needed? In that case, the comparison with the single monolithic compartment INDIAN NAVY SUBMARINE is not relevant: the structural strength and weight of any one compartment is manageable, as in a TRAIN.

For example, these SUBMARINE TRAIN CARS, can be separately loaded at the SOURCE point (TN or Supply Ship), like CONTAINERS, tacked on to the SUBMARINE TRAIN ENGINE UNITS, and pulled undersea to the Access Dock for unloading. There, each TRAIN CAR is detached, winched onto a WHEELED TRAILER such as that shown in the VIDEO, and hauled by TRACTOR to some location on LAND, where the contents can be unloaded at leisure. The entire operation at the LANDING LOCATION can be done in one hour at night, completely hidden from observation.

Today “Dinamina” web news paper says Karaiyamullivaikkal junction in Mulative road is taken by 53rd division yesterday after a heavy battle.

If this is true (it must be true) then SLA have progressed half way through to the NFZ. Now civilians should be able to come out, if they want.

Agree 100% with this: Israel provides SL BOTH ADVANCED WEAPONS & WEAPONS TECHNOLOGY.

This reminds me of the time in the 60's when Western Countries wanted to only to sell Sri Lanka finished goods, but not the TECHNOLOGY for producing goods locally. Only Russia and China were willing to do that.

We have largely gotten beyond those barriers wrt civilian technology, but still confront barriers obtaining military technology.

Israel is an important ally for Sri Lanka in that regard.

Have you seen how a pig is killed for a feast? First you have to catch it and if it evades capture one may have to shoot to capture it. Generally it has to be shot in the anus area so that it will not be killed. On being shot the pig lets out a loud squeal and collapses.

Then the game begins. Several people get together and beat it with clubs. It is said that a pig killed slowly this way tastes much better and this is the way we have to follow in the case of the Fat Pig. I would love to hear him squealing as he is clubbed. One squeal for every man, woman and child he has killed and two for every suicide bomber he has sent to death.

If you want to know how a pig squeals as he is given this treatment, just listen to all the small pigs squealing in this blog. The loudest right now is the SL-A-HOLE who has been shot in the anus. It was a bullseye and that is why the squealing is so loud and named himself as A-Hole.

I wish there is a way to ban BBC from ever coming to Sri Lanka. There agenda is the destabilization of the country through biased media reporting.
I am not sure whether we can take action against these fuckers or not.

@ RW and his friends ship

As far as I know its not a donation of USA: US donated that old ship which was out of use for them but SL had to pay $$ to repair to US company. Its said the cost to GSL is too high, they could have said no thanks and buy a relatively good one. But CBK was reluctant to say NO to USA thinking USA become unhappy.

Further, At that stage it was a dragging war (+CFA). I don't think USA bother about giving some trash at that stage knowing it helps further to drag the war. But when we NEED weapons to finish off LTTE and when its apparent SLA is finishing the war, RW's friends said NO.

What ever it may be, I will not be surprised if SLN come across a similar structure (much smaller in size) already in action.

the food drop crap is a clever strategy of LTTE (but it will fail).

first the buggers went after UN action to stop the war and nothing happened thanks mainly to china and russia.

EU through britain & france did their share and they are silent now.

tigers got it tight from canada.

australia, japan, new zealand, others are not doing anything to stop the war.

india is not doing anything to stop the war.

however, USA still seems promising. they are CONTINOUSLY trying to put pressure on GOSL and they are the type who don't need others' (especially UN) support to do whatever AT LEAST for a "humanitarian intervention".

what starts as a "humanitarian intervention" escalates further bcos by the time a "humanitarian intervention" is done, SL's soveregnty is ALREADY violated, the "humanitarians" realise how desperate ppl are, LTTE can fool the "humanitarians" easily once involved.

so it is a plan to get the americans here. vezapillai hasn't forgotten robert o'blake's escape plan for him.

now the tigers have become orphaned PUPPIES. if ANYONE shows some interest, they will go after him whinning.

My COMMENT:Jonathan Kay Article: National Post

The first independent video report from Sri Lankan detention camps for displaced Tamils
[ I viewed the BBC CH4 report. I find it ludicrous that "reputable journalists" broadcast this kind of unsubstantiated report, probably handed to them as a "package" by some LTTE agent. Horrendous allegations are made on the basis of unverified non-existent evidence!

It is all hear-say on the basis of what some man sitting anonymously in hiding in a room is saying. There was no evidence whatever.
Where were the dead bodies, where were the pictures of the uncovered bathing areas for women, where were the 'starving" people, where were the babies "with no milk food", where were the raped women? Were they interviewed? Can they be produced?

A woman "aid worker" with a foreign accent makes additional claims of abuses, but who knows who this woman is, and where the recording was done? Where is some modicum of proof?

The LTTE is famous for making "video reports" of this kind, using paid contract workers, paid "human rights" attorneys, paid "TV journalists and reporters" in their last ditch propaganda war against the Govt. of Sri Lanka, now that their campaign of mass murder and mayhem in Sri Lanka has COME TO NOUGHT.

They have planted LTTE operatives in ALL THE NEWS MEDIAS networks who feed this crap to their GULLIBLE networks. You have no idea of the DEVIOUSNESS of these people, UNTIL you begin to see and confront the threat they POSE TO YOUR OWN COUNTRIES.

These so called "reputable media organizations" are either being CONNED, are not exercising DUE DILIGENCE to verify the information and the sources, are running to publish flawed sensational articles.

Why is that? Is is because they can get away with it because they will not be SUED BY THIS POOR COUNTRY Sri Lanka that they feel free to do things they would not dare report about others? For example, the actions of the US & UK Govt in Iraq and Afghanistan, for fear of being taken to court?

SHAME on ALL of THESE Countries and News Media that abuse a fellow democracy struggling to survive terrorism orchestrated on a global scale! ]

Response by a reader 'End of Tigers' in response to aone sided article in Canadian National Post by a bitch called Shally Aiken

Thanks to all you protesters, Tamil Tiger Diaspora who protested carrying Tiger terrorist flags. The SL govt couldn't have done a better PR job.

The canadians have finally realised that you are a bunch of bloodthirsty terrorist supporters who are funding a terrorists on the other side of the world destroy young lives by forcing child soldiers, blowing up innocent civilians in packed busses, trains and public places, just to achieve a racist mono-ethnic state. Why don't you send your own kids to fight for the LTTE if you are that bothered? No, you and your family have too much luxary to lose if you leave Canada. You don't give a damn about the civilians in the South or North of Sri Lanka. The whold world has also realised from time to time LTTE use certain keywords that may attract attention from the west until it wears out after a while. Sorry, failed this time. No one is buying the "genocide" label. They know the truth. Stop believing LTTE lies. The LTTE leaders have betrayed you and lived luxary lives with the money you sent, and used little kids as child soldiers. Now these cowards are hiding behind the innocent civilians to save their skins.

Do you honestly believe if there is a genocide, the govt of SL would take this long to finish the war? I suspect it will only take the SLAF a couple of hours to bomb the remaining 4.5Sq KMs of land the LTTE is hiding behind the civilians. Instead the SL forces are taking heavy casualties using only small arms, whilst LTTE is shelling them from inside the Safe Zone.

I know it is hard to let go of the Ealam dream. After all nobody believed SL forces could defeat the LTTE. But it's time to wake up from the dream now and move on. SL will be a multiethnic country everyone of all races and religions can live in peace.
The best thing the protesters can do if they cared about civilians is to encourage the LTTE to let the civilians go.

(PS: Maybe the Canadian Tamil Tiger Diaspora can ask for a piece of land from Canada and you can fly your violent LTTE flag from every house there, because Canada only fly the Canadian flag)

My guess is this is a submersible arms carrier (similar to floating warehouses destroyed by the Navy) to smuggle arms. Which would travel at slow speeds under water and float for loading and unloading.

Fabrication and commissioning could have taken up to 2 years to complete. LTTE never thought SLA would ever set foot in this region even when they were “tactically” withdrawing.

Just a guestimate.

Then future tyrants and conniving IC will respect and mustn’t give in like this to just to stay in power.

[QUESTION: If some LTTE leaders run for their lives AT THE LAST MOMENT and surrender to the SLA,
do they QUALIFY to be AUTOMATICALLY PROMOTED to Members of Parliament on the National List?]

Mate, I wish no one with a proven criminal history has a right to be a parliamentarian in a true democracy. I am sure you would agree.

(Having said that, we know there are many such people currently in parliaments around the world, some in well developed democratic nations.)

On that account I am totally against bringing in any LTTE activist to parliament. But, this is not a time we can go by the text book. There are so many variables and external and internal conspiracies GoSL under MR should have to weather our after the war. The most impacting is the political vacuum created by the demise of LTTE. That is a danger. On the other hand if we do not include them WISELY they have no alternative to survive than becoming a mafia organisation or even more ruthless terror ourfit.

It is more of a tactical situation for GoSL leadership than an issue of principle.

In short, my heart says a BIG NO and my mind says YES we must.

'Up to 100 dead' in Afghan raid

A Red Cross team that travelled to the area witnessed dozens of bodies being buried [Reuters]

Up to 100 Afghan civilians may have been killed during an air raid by US forces during a joint operation targeting suspected fighters, a provincial governor has said.

If the claims are verified, the deaths in Farah province on the western border would be the largest loss of civilian life in a single incident since US-led forces invaded Afghanistan in 2001.

Rohul Amin, the governor of Farah province, said on Wednesday that he feared that 100 civilians had been killed in the Bala Baluk district of the province, about 600km from Kabul, the capital.

Amin said that the Taliban were reportedly using civilian homes to take shelter during the fighting.

Earlier reports had said that 50 civilians had been killed in Monday's raid.

Burials

Jessica Barry, a spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), said that the organisation sent a team to the region after concerned tribal leaders had contacted them seeking help.

"When [our team] went to the first two villages where these incidents took place they saw dozens of bodies. They saw graves and they saw people being buried," she told Al Jazeera.

Barry said that an ICRC community-based first aid volunteer and his extended family, including his five daughters and three sons, were among the dead

She said that they were killed while sheltering in their home.

The US said on Tuesday that it was conducting a joint inquiry, along with the Afghan government, into the deaths, with investigators from both sides visiting the sites.

Robert Wood, the acting US state department spokesman, said in a statement: "Coalition forces and the Afghan government have received reports of civilian casualties in conjunction with a militant attack on Afghan National Security Forces in Farah Province on May 5.

"A joint investigation will be conducted to determine exactly what happened."

'Dozens of dead'

Colonel Greg Julian, a US military spokesman, acknowledged that a battle had taken place, but could not say if there had been civilian deaths.

"Once we get eyes on the ground we will have a better idea of what may have happened," Julian said.

Monday's attack occurred after Taliban fighters killed three former government officials in a village for co-operating with the state, Amin said.

Amin said that villagers had brought lorry loads of bodies to his office in the provincial capital as proof of their death.

The US government has come under increasing criticism during the past year for civilian deaths during operations against Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters in Afghanistan.

Barry said: "I think that it is important to remember that this is not a one off situation. There has been a rise in casualties over the last year.

"It is absolutely important to remind all sides that civilians must not be harmed."

However, Wood said: "US and international forces take extensive precautions to avoid loss of life among Afghan civilians as well as international and Afghan forces during operations against insurgents and terrorists."

Washington talks

Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, is in Washington DC for talks with Barack Obama and Asif Ali Zardari, his US and Pakistani counterparts respectively.

The meeting is being held to address the war against the Taliban in both nations.

The Taliban has used Pakistan's border region with Afghanistan as a base to launch attacks in the two countries since their five-year rule in Kabul was ended by a US military invasion in 2001.

Washington has heightened its focus on fighting the Taliban since the Obama administration assumed power this year, with an added 21,000 troops being sent to Afghanistan.

There are more than 30,000 US troops in Afghanistan already, alongside a similar number of troops from other foreign nations.

Last year, about 2,000 civilians were killed in fighting against the Taliban, according to the UN.

Insight into Canadian Politial Oposition Leaders view on SriLanka ~ Article J. Kay National Post, Toronto

The conflict between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tigers has deep, tangled roots. But to a rough order of magnitude, the moral stakes can be reduced to a single act of terrorist savagery that took place on July 29, 1999 — the day Neelan Tiruchelvam was blown out the side of his Nissan sedan by a female suicide bomber riding a moped.

Tiruchelvam was a Sri Lankan Tamil, but not the kind that makes excuses for terrorism, or for the nihilistic death cult led by Tigers chief Velupillai Pirapaharan. Instead, he sought to bring justice and self-determination for Sri Lanka’s Tamil minority through negotiation and constitutional reform. In Sri Lanka, he was an elected parliamentarian and the founder of two major think tanks. In the United States, he taught at Harvard University, enlightening Western students about human-rights abuses committed in Sri Lanka — by the nation’s military and the Tigers alike.

He was a moderate, in other words — the Tamils’ answer to Yitzhak Rabin or Nelson Mandela. And that’s why he was assassinated: The Tigers despise any Tamil who does not share their commitment to war and terrorism. Tiger propaganda — including the terrorist group’s own “poet laureate” — spent years vilifying Tiruchelvam as a traitor prior to his assassination. Muzhakkam, a Tiger-controlled newspaper here in Canada joined in the campaign.

The act serves as a grim metaphor for the war itself. Much as many Tamil-Canadians claim that the Sri Lankan government is engineering a “genocide,” the greatest threat to the country’s Tamils has been their professed protectors. The Tigers are the ones who have assassinated moderate Tamils, erected a murderous mini-dictatorship in the northern part of the island, abducted Tamil children to serve as terrorists and soldiers, and stolen tsunami-relief money to fund military operations. Now that the Tigers are cornered in northeastern Sri Lanka, the Tigers are holding tens of thousands of Tamil civilians as human shields — shooting them in the back as they seek to flee.

Tiruchelvam’s sacrifice is remembered in the highest places — including right here in Canada. In fact, it helps explain why Michael Ignatieff has decisively reversed the Liberal party’s traditionally soft stand on Tiger terror.

In the late 1980s, Tiruchelvam and Ignatieff were Harvard colleagues, preaching human rights from the same hymn book. When Tiruchelvam was blown up, Ignatieff traveled to Sri Lanka to deliver a lecture in the man’s honour. A year later, he described the experience in a speech at the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression awards dinner in Toronto.

Neelan Tiruchelvam, Ignatieff declared, was “a man whose memory I revere.” But that wasn’t the prevailing view among many of the noisiest members of the Canadian Tamil community: “When the word got out that I was going to give a lecture in Colombo in his honour, I began to get very extraordinary bits of Tamil literature, mailed to me with a Canadian postmark. And the sum and substance of these newsletters was basically to say that Neelan, my good friend, got what he deserved. This was a man who’d spent his entire life seeking peace and reconciliation on that bloody and tragic island. And it shocked me deeply to discover that the people who wished and rejoiced in his death were fellow citizens of [Canada] … Don’t think it doesn’t put a chill down your spine when you get mysterious little missives like that.”

A decade later, with Igantieff leading the Liberal Party, those hatemongers are now reaping what they’ve sown. And so are the Tamil Tigers themselves, whose last-ditch positions are now set to be overrun by Sri Lanka’s military. Ten years after the group killed Neelan Tiruchelvam, an opportunity to implement his vision of peaceful reconciliation may finally be at hand.

Will Prabhakaran, Pottu Amman and Soosai negotiate surrender through ICRC? by Shamindra Ferdinando

Would LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, his intelligence chief Pottu Amman, Sea Tiger leader Soosai and their families surrender to the government through the ICRC? Although the government has ruled out negotiations with the LTTE leaders now trapped on the Mullaitivu coast or any third party mediation to bring an end to hostilities, the enemy could take advantage of the ICRC to negotiate their surrender, well informed sources said.

The ICRC chartered ship Green Ocean deployed to ferry wounded persons from the LTTE-held area now down to seven sq. km to Pulmoddai, south of Mullaitivu could evacuate them.

The ICRC remains the only INGO allowed to send expatriate staff to the LTTE-held area since Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa ordered all other agencies out of the area last September.

With both land and sea routes cut off and the government turning a blind eye to international calls for immediate suspension of the ongoing offensive, the LTTE would have no other option but to give in. The international community should explore the possibility of sending a message to the LTTE through the ICRC immediately as the ICRC-led civilian evacuation operation is nearing completion. The bottom line is that the LTTE leadership wouldn’t get another chance to surrender before the army overruns the Tiger-held area in the next few days.

Under a tripartite agreement negotiated among the government, the ICRC and the LTTE, the ICRC is allowed to evacuate the sick and the war wounded along with some of their relatives. The LTTE has allowed the ICRC to evacuate over 11,000 men, women and children since the launch of the operation in the second week of February this year. Initially, they were taken to the Trincomalee harbour but since the Indian government set up a medical facility at Pulmoddai, the ICRC has been moving them there. Although the evacuees had been categorized as civilians, there is no doubt that among them were wounded LTTE fighters and families of senior LTTE cadres.

This writer was in Pulmoddai last Tuesday (April 28) shortly before Green Ocean anchored about one nautical mile off the coastline. Although a group of journalists taken by the navy on a conducted tour was aware that small fibre glass dinghies were used to move people from the Green Ocean to shore, no one believed that scribes, too, had to take the same route. Believe me, there was no way one can comfortably board a dinghy from a Dvora Fast Attack Craft (FAC) due to sharp difference of the height of the vessels. Two FACs carrying journalists discharged them about one nautical mile off the coastline to fishing boats operated by Sinhala fishermen. Choppy seas made our short journey traumatic with photographers desperately trying to protect their equipment.\

Let me emphasize that the war wounded and the sick, too, are transferred in dinghies by fishermen under extremely difficult and dangerous conditions. Operating in several boats, fishermen took several hours to evacuate exhausted people under the watchful eyes of the navy.

Captain Samantha Wimalatunga, the senior officer in charge of the SLN deployment at Pulmoddai, told The Sunday Island that they had in place security measures to minimize damage and loss of life in the event one of the evacuees turned out to be suicide cadre. "Fortunately we haven’t come across a suicide cadre or anyone carrying a weapon so far," he said, adding that people brought by the ICRC were quickly directed to medical facilities after they undergo rigorous security checks.

All evacuees including children are photographed before they are moved to medical facilities in the area. One of them is run by Indian personnel. Responding to our queries, Wimalatunga, who had been decorated for commanding an Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) involved in the destruction of the LTTE’s largest vessel sunk about 2,600 km south of Dondra head in early October 2006, acknowledged that SLN personnel tasked to carry out checks do their duty at the risk of their lives. Pointing at four box shaped security posts made of sand bags on the beach, he asserted that they would minimize damage in the surrounding area if an LTTE cadre triggered a blast inside a security point.

Obviously some of the freshly bandaged war wounded persons arriving at Pulmoddai were LTTE cadres. Well built men who hadn’t faced a food shortage before being evacuated by the ICRC could be Prabhakaran’s men given the opportunity to escape before the army moved in. The LTTE, on the verge of collapse, would have taken advantage of the ICRC operation to evacuate some of its wounded and families of LTTE cadres.

Wimalatunga said that apart from people brought in by the ICRC, a large number of men, women and children had reached Pulmoddai on their own. They had come in fishing boats at the risk of their lives, he said, adding that the navy assisted hundreds of boats to reach land. He acknowledged that those who coming on their own too were being subjected to security checks. "We’ll not take a chance," he said, revealing that the navy had recovered one cyanide capsule from a woman and handed her over to the army.

A group of soldiers tasked with escorting evacuees from Pulmoddai to Padaviya said that Sinhala civilians would attack convoys if the army didn’t provide escorts. "People are aware of the presence of wounded LTTE cadres as well as Mahaveer families among the evacuees. Many families in this area have lost their bread winners in the fight against the LTTE," a soldier said. People would go on the rampage if they come across unescorted buses carrying civilians, he said.

Standing next to a locally built Unicorn armoured personnel carrier, the NCO said that they were glad major battles were coming to an end. Had Mahaveer families and LTTE cadres really believed lies propagated by the LTTE leadership and the Tamil Diaspora they would have been shocked by the treatment received at Pulmoddai. The army, too, had met the challenging task of looking after over 100,000 Tamils, he said. Responding to our queries, he said that they had imposed severe security measures to thwart people from walking out of hospitals and IDP centres.

Earlier in the day, we observed a large scale SLN deployment off the no fire zone on the north-eastern coast. Captain D. N. S. C. Kalubowila accompanying us on board an Israeli-built Shaldag Class Dvora explained the measures in place to thwart an escape bid by the LTTE. As we approached the coastline, a major fire fight erupted between the army and the LTTE. The expatriate ICRC staff on Green Ocean at that time anchored a little distance away from Farah III would have seen what is going on the ground.

Kalubowila, the commanding officer of the 4th FAC Squadron, said that over 80 craft including Offshore Patrol Craft had been deployed to neutralize any LTTE threat. The Special Boat Squadron (SBS) and the Rapid Action Boat Squadron (RABS) had been deployed closest to the LTTE-held land. The Dvoras and locally built FACs had been positioned in between the SBS-RABS and the OPVs deployed on the high seas.

There had been a spate of confrontations between the navy and Sea Tigers off the no fire zone during the past three months. Responding to questions, he said that before taking over the new assignment, he had commanded passenger ship Jetliner extensively used to move troops between Trincomalee and Kankesanthurai. He said that Sea Tigers almost succeeded in hitting Jetliner carrying well over 1,000 troops as it approached the Trincomalee harbour in the first week of August 2006.

"Had I tried to move away from land to escape explosives packed suicide craft and artillery fire, they would have most probably succeeded in their attempt. I was given an opportunity to decide and opted to go into the harbour," he said. The navy fought fiercely to save the ship, he said. Had the LTTE succeeded it would have caused irreparable damage to the war effort.

He said that the naval blockade on the no fire zone with a coastline of about six kms-three each on the either side of Farah III which had run aground in December 2006 - was evidence that the LTTE had lost the war.

The army had restricted the LTTE to a seven sq. km. area. Since my visit, the army had brought another km of coastline under its control.

Kalubowila said that with the re-opening of the A9 by the army, the navy had stopped using Jetliner to move troops. He said that the vessel was capable of carrying over 3,000 personnel. Escorting the chartered vessel had been a massive task, he said, adding that the navy had no option but to provide a very heavy FAC escort to thwart an attack. The SLAF, too, was invariably involved in measures to meet the LTTE challenge, he said.

We were transferred from Dvoras to Inshore Patrol Craft and moved to Chundikulam where the navy had established a base to direct small boat operations at the LTTE now making a desperate bid to dominate the sea close to the no fire zone. Navy spokesman Captain D. K. P. Dassanayake on a temporary assignment in the northern theatre explained the measures taken to prevent Prabhakaran from fleeing. Dassanayake is based at Chalai, the other small boat launching point involved in the operation.

He said that the LTTE had placed a 37 mm weapon on Farah III to direct fire at the navy. The SLAF had recently bombed the ship, he said, dismissing the possibility of LTTE leaders escaping in a submarine. Says Commander Northern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Somathilaka Dissanayake, ‘their so called submarines found on the ground weren’t submarines in a real sense of the word. They couldn’t submerge totally."

Dissanayake who was on an inspection tour of area said that those craft would have been built to carry out suicide attacks on SLN vessels both out at sea and anchored in harbours. He rejected the possibility of a foreign submarine or surface vessel coming to Prabhakaran’s rescue due to permanent SLN presence on the high seas.

Dissanayake, a former navy spokesman, told this reporter that the availability of high tech equipment had made things easier. "Today we have the capacity to monitor LTTE movements both on land and sea 24 hours a day. They’ll never be able to surprise us or take the initiative again," he emphasized.

The recent acquisition of Israeli-built rockets mounted on IPCs had given the navy the upper hand in sea battles. The IPCs could comfortably take fast moving enemy boats from a distance of over 3 kms. But, the SLAF remains ready to provide additional gunfire support. On May Day, the Mi 24 helicopter gunships were deployed in support of the navy. The SLAF also has shifted some jets from Katunayake to Trincomalee as part of the overall strategy to meet the LTTE threat.

To the credit of the government, it has launched a re-settlement programme as the 58 and 53 Divisions commanded by Brigadier Shavindra Silva and Major General Kamal Gunarathne fought the final battle. The first beneficiaries would be those who abandoned their villages in areas west of the A9 road. The government last week moved over 400 persons from 122 families to Savariarpuram in Mannar.

Defencewire,
1)As soon as the war is over, Government should investigate those international arms dealers who provide arms to LTTE. Maybe even US government would be interested in those arms dealers given Al Quida is probably using the same dealers or they know the dealers.

2)Hope government will find out those LTTE Swiss bank account where they hind millions of dollars for arms shipment. Tell the Swiss and Europian governments to crack those instead of telling how to run a war in our own soil.

3)We need to investigate foreign mercenaries with expertise in Explosives, Explosive manufacturing, Underwater Demolitions, Submarine Technology, Pilot training, Airplane maintenance, etc who came to Srilanka.

4) Most importantly we need to Person non-gratia (i.e. expel them) for those foreign diplomats who supported LTTE. We need to put them out of diplomat carriers because they will do the same when they becomes diplomats of some other country.

5) We need to expel those NGOs who supported LTTE. We need to setup a very good monitoring scheme for them to operate. We need to be aware of NGO business plan of living off of someone else misery.

6) RW and local politicians who supported LTTE in my opinion should be tried for treason.

7) We need to investigate corrupt Srilankan Customs officials who allowed to LTTE to bring in lots of War material from the Colombo ports. I would suspect Navy officials also involvement. I support government efforts to have Navy inspect cargo ships arriving in Colombo.

The army sniper had apparently tagged over 80 LTTE cadres duing his career.

Greets Patriots...

Recently I got to know that the Conservative Govt. of Canada has been acting as a "modulator" to the rest of the western world (earlier brainwashed by LTTE whore's propaganda) as despite may large-scale LTTE demonstrations (called of course "Tamil protests")in cities like Ottawa, Monteal and Toronto in Canada, the Govt. of Canada has taken a very "back seat" and wait-&-see attitude.

I gather that not only the ruling Conservative Govt. of Canada, even the usually-LTTE-darling Liberal opposition has refused to come out and be associated with these LTTE protests...so the going is not good for the LTTE momma-fuckers in Canada.

Not only that, I gather Canada (that has a large Tamil diaspora) has been advising other western nations (with much less Tamil diaspora as may be) on what LTTE front-org ploys (such as TRO stunts) and to not fall victim to!

Kudos to you Govt. of Canada!

Where is that interfering UK Foreign Secretary David Milliband, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, and of course, the US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton coming forward now to condemn this attack on Afghan civilians - with the same venom they reserved to criticize the Govt. of Sri Lanka in its war against LTTE TERRORISTS and demand that the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) cease & desist from using "heavy weapons" in its efforts to neutralize the heinous LTTE Tamil TERRORISTS, who are also holding Tamil civilians hostage as a human shield just as, evidently, the Taliban is doing? Oh, I forgot...Hillary Clinton called the Tamil Tiger TERRORISTS "good terrorists" when LTTE front organizations world-wide made some generous donations to her "Elect Hillary for President" campaign and Milliband and Kouchner are after the Tamil Diaspora votes in their respective countries. What a SHAME! Yes, this is an abject SHAME and this is why it makes one think that the West's "war-against-terrorism" will never be won - due to utter hypocrisy! Today poor (largely peasantry), Sri Lankan youth in the Sri Lanka Army are dying by the scores in their efforts to neutralize the LTTE TERRORISTS - now cornered to barely 4 sq.miles and also holding civilians hostage - because the the Govt. of SL caved into pressure from these hypocritical, self-interests-at-heart, meddling, western nations. US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Robert Blake even insinuatingly threatened Sri Lankan leaders of potential charges of "war crimes" if the SLA continued its attacks on the LTTE (citing of course "civilian concerns") and I think Sri Lankans must now keep track of these US bombing events and look to the day that they too can bring Hillary Clinton and Obama to the Hague on "war crimes" as what is good for the Goose, is also good for the Gander.

It is the last chance for US to strike a political balance in the island, if it is really keen in seeing meaningful ‘post-conflict’ process, said TamilNet’s political commentator in Colombo. The balance disturbed by US has to be set right by US itself by a timely action such as sending the fleet without waiting for political changes in India, the commentator said.

My Dear Gen. the Most Hon. Moshe Dayan,

We do have a problem indeed.

In creating the SriLankaPatriots blog we wanted to provide an information resource to counter pro-LTTE Diaspora propaganda.

However, the WARRIOR AUTHORS wielding PATRIOTIC PENS who were supposed to join this PHALANX OF SPARTANS to hold the Balane Pass failed to show up to fight!

With the exception of Moshe, MailRavana, and Konappu Bandara, and myself, very few others have written articles and contributed substantially to the Blog. Fewer still are USING THE INFORMATION already collected to launch targeted propaganda efforts. Where are you, my Brothers?

Instead of joining together, what did happen was that every able patriot became a Blogmaster by himself/herself, with none of the patriotic Blogs created achieving much traction or critical mass. At SriLankaPatriots, we now have a couple of hundred enrolled members, but few authors, and EVEN FEWER PROPAGANDISTS using the material for the intended purpose of countering LTTE propaganda and defending Lanka. Why?

The drift in direction that MOSHE refers to is NOT REAL; it is only APPARENT. In addition to historical information, I have continued to collect and add CURRENT information in various categories that I think are useful reference materials for patriots to use. They can do so by viewing, reading, copying and pasting as needed, to create their submissions/postings at other media sites, leaving a copy at SLPBlog as a contribution for others to use. There is are NO BARRIERS to DEVELOPING and LAUNCHING the ICBMs that Moshe, wants to FIRE towards the targets.

Mayil Ravana has written some excellent articles on Propaganda Strategy, Moshe has submitted several on the False Allegations of the Eelamists, and Konappu Bandara has submitted a number of articles tracing the historical roots of the Sinhala people to counter pro-LTTE justifications for a separate state. I have written many short passages that can be used directly, or in modified form, as news media posts, as well as more detailed articles in a variety of areas related to Economic Development and National Security.

The adverse positions taken recently by several major Western Countries towards Sri Lanka underscores the URGENCY of the NEED for an organization such as SriLankaPatriots to enable counterfire from Patriots.

What is needed NOW is for various people to volunteer to lead various efforts/projects, and create small teams around those efforts.

These efforts could include:

1. Petition drives with a well defined end result.

2. Focusing on news media by country (India, Canada, UK, US, France), on organizations (UN, HRW), on issue areas(False Human Rights Allegations, Calls for Ceasefire, Economic Aid Cutoffs) or even on individuals (Obama, Hillary Clinton, Miliband, Kouchner, Chidambaram, Mukerjee) etc. Each team would read up and become expert in that area/issue/person , contact other like-minded people in other patriotic organizations, and prepare and execute media campaigns/petition drives etc.

3. Encourage more patriots interested in contributing to this effort to become members of SriLankaPatriots. Diffusion of effort by forming multiple organizations is useful only if your views are completely contrary to those of SriLankaPatriots as a whole any your goals cannot be satified within the umbrella provided by SriLankaPatriots.

4. We can create a separate category for each of the ongoing project teams.

We are open to your suggestions on how to do this more effectively; email us at SriLankaPatriotsBlog@gmail.com .

Karunanidhi joins Eelam bandwagonMay 07, 2009

UNDER pressure from rivals AIADMK and others, Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK late on Wednesday jumped onto the Eelam bandwagon, demanding a separate homeland for Tamils in Sri Lanka.

In a bid to match rivals, Chief Minister and DMK president M Karunanidhi said he would be making efforts to see that Eelam was created.

“We have ensured a fair quantity of relief for Sri Lankan Tamils. As a next step, they should get Eelam and I assumed responsibilities of making all efforts to ensure that Eelam is created,” he said in an appeal to party workers.

Karunanidhi’s remarks came after AIADMK general secretary J Jayalaltihaa made a dramatic turnaround from her party’s known stand and pitched for Eelam in the party’s election manifesto.

Later, she also said that if the Lok Sabha polls returned a favourable government, she would ensure that the Indian army was sent to Sri Lanka to help create Eelam. ]

Let the LP be the one stop place for all patriots to get all the info but having a single presence does not give enough exposure to counter propagandawhat

i suggest is when there is a propoganda gimmik by LTTE for eg. this chamical weapon story let the patriots find the info they need to counter this from LP and write a new article(Ideal Situation) or just publish the same in their own blog 1000 voices is better than 1 voice on cyber space

what the LTTE is doing is they fabricate the story and thier proxy mouth pieces start publishing them all over the web on various webs and blogs to counter this effectively you need the numbers including publishing these articles on credible web sources

http://enduringamerica.com/2009/05/06/tuesdays-mass-killing-in-afghanistan-us-military-begins-the-lying/

Tuesday’s Mass Killing in Afghanistan: US Military Begins The Lying All day we’ve been following reports of the mass killing in a US airstrike in western Afghanistan. The aerial assault was called in after fighting between Afghan forces, backed by coalition troops, and insurgents. Estimates of the dead have varied from a few dozen to 120 — an accurate count may not be possible because some of the dead have already been buried — but the provincial governor fears about 100 civilians have been killed.
US officials quickly took the official line that any civilian deaths were regrettable but were at the hands of the Taliban. A fine example of that deflection of blame can be heard in the BBC interview of the American ambassador to NATO this morning (about 1:50:00 into the podcast).

Leaving aside the consequence that relatives of dead civilians are just as likely to blame the Americans who killed them as they are the Taliban, what is already disconcerting is the US attempt to cover up the scale of the tragedy. The US military says that it has “preliminarily concluded that about 11 civilians were wounded and that 11 insurgents were killed”.
How do I know that is a blatant lie? Well, because International Committee of the Red Cross officials have seen “dozens of people, including women and children” dead at the scene. The ICRC head of delegation in Kabul confirmed, “Those killed included an Afghan Red Crescent volunteer and 13 members of his family who had been sheltering from fighting in a house that was bombed in an airstrike.”
None of this, of course, is to absolve the insurgents of responsibility, giving the proximity of civilians to the fighting. Still, as Afghan President Karzai is in Washington for talks, this is already a glaring example of how the Obama policy in Afghanistan will be undone not only by US military action, but by the attempts to cover up the consequences of those actions.

Obama kahinne $500 tada? MR meeting ekakadi meka kiyuwanam thamai maru.

ArticleduringUSAelectionA well- known LTTE operative whose funds were returned by an embarrassed Clinton campaign earlier this year has turned around and made a donation to the campaign of Democratic presidential hopeful Senator Barack Obama. This time, the money has not been rejected and there’s another pro-LTT E group out there raising more.

The Hillary campaign returned $2300 earlier this year to New Jersey resident Ranjan Ramanathan who was raising funds under the banner ‘Tamils for Clinton.’ The matter was brought to the attention of the Clinton campaign after a local newspaper publicized that he was an LTTE operative. Ramanathan is a state coordinator for the Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO), an LTTE front that the US Treasury Department designated as the fund raising arm of the Tigers. He has publicly admitted raising funds for the TRO.

In March, Ramanathan made a contribution of $500 to the Obama campaign but this time it has apparently gone unnoticed. Ramanathan, has also contributed heavily to Democratic Representatives Rush Holt and Frank Pallone, both harsh critics of the Sri Lankan government.

Meanwhile, a new group calling itself ‘Progressive Tamils for Obama’ is raising funds for the candidate. The identity of the individuals involved is not known but it is quite likely that this is a re-grouping of the ‘Tamils for Clinton’ group. Definitely, the rhetoric on the group’s website strongly suggests an LTTE presence:

“We Progressive Tamil Americans expect that Senator Obama will become the next president of the US. We hope that when he becomes president next January, he will be supportive of our concerns, especially of the continuing suffering of our friends and families in Sri Lanka. We are dismayed by the continuing “slow genocide” of Tamils there. We are sure that he is as concerned as we are about the destruction of the Tamil people and culture in Sri Lanka.”

Calling for a ‘Bosnian model’ solution to the conflict, the group says: “We urge the 44th president of the Unite States, Mr. Obama, to take a strong hand in resolving this civil war. Perhaps he could bring the Tamils and Singhalese to Canton, Ohio, like we did with the former Yugoslavians, and force a solution to the Sri Lankan war. This solution could be based on the Bosnian model or on one of the many others like Montenegro, East Timor, Quebec, Slovakia, or Kosovo. We might be able to utilize Ambassador Richard Holbrooke’s expertise to bring peace to Sri Lanka.”
The candidate’s only comment so far on the conflict was in an interview to candidates@google in January when he referred to it as a ‘vicious civil war’ that raged in that country even though ‘everybody there looks exactly the same.’

The LTTE has operated under numerous fronts in the US and Canada and it is not unusual for these shadowy groups to appear and disappear. Ramanathan himself floated another organization called South Asian Community Association (SACA) which he used to rent a school auditorium in Brunswick New Jersey to memorialize dead LTTE fighters and suicide bombers in 2006. Nothing has been heard of SACA since.

Yeah, this is what I have been getting at. I know lot of people don't want to drag religion in to this. It is not the religion, but religious institutions that are the cause of the problem. In addition to Divide and rule by ethnicity British manage to divide a country via introduction of religion.

What we are fighting is not Tamils, but Christian institution, who hates Buddhist majority and want this country divided.

We should not worry about alienating Christians. Sinhalese Christian already think lot of Sri Lankans are Buddhist Chauvinists. Let us take an example about Chauvanist in a lovely democratic Australia. In Sydney some Muslims are trying to build a Muslim school, the councils are opposing.
So, lets stop this BS about Chauvinism. Where ever Christians go they try to spread there religion, which is not a problem, but in the end it end up creating conflicts.

What I think best for our country is try to further divide on religious lines for our own national security. I am sure that Tamil Hindus have been discriminated by Tamil Christians.
I am sure if we took bit of statistics on how many Chritian Suicide bombers their are as opposed to Hindus e.t.c. e.t.c we would find this discrimination. We should present these facts to the community and make sure these guys get divided as well. The reason is, the whole LTTE Tiger show is run by Cristians. Otherwise the west would not be supporting these guys this much. Secondly if the church stand up against the LTTE, the west would not support either. Therefore, what I believe is the Sri Lankan Church is a very destabilising force in our country (Not helping us means in directly supporting Terrorism). This is not just Sri Lanka, but through out this region. I don't mean to offend all these people who are Christians and put their hearts and soul to help poor people. But in this end it seems like this is what is happening in hour country.
Therefore it is about time we start divide and Quanquer as well. Tamils screams and shout about what Sinahelse have done to them. It is about time to show what Tamil Christians have done to them as well. If they are divided, it would be for the best of the country.
Our first priority must be national interest and not religion. Therefore lets us worry about the Sinhala Christians later

It is obvious that Boyle is on the LTTE payroll. Boyle is in Illinoi and the connection is there. There is a strong LTTE network in Illinoi and to my knowledge it is the main LTTE network in USA. They are the people who made the so called exposed political donations during USA Presidential elections.

Some more articles cropping up relating to Church and Terrorism.

Sri Lankan image have been destroyed through out the world via propaganda published by Tamils and Christians. It is about time we destroy squeaky clean image of the Church. Let us publish an image of a church behind every photo we publish of Prabhakaran. It does not matter whether there is any truth in it or not. The best way to attack the west is to associate Prabhakaran with the Church.

As we publish some posters of Hilary as a Terrorist Supporter, we should put some posters that have Prabha and Osama side by side, one baptised by the church and other by an Iman an put good terrorist, bad terrorist to make it clear the Hypocracy of these people. Lets make Christianity synonymous with Terrorism as well.

"Crorepathy" Fr. Jegath Gasper Raj main link for Tigers in India
Sun, 2007-03-18 03:57
The Sri Lankan Catholic Church, the Catholic Radio Veritas based in Phillipines, the Tamil Catholic hierachy and its priests have been the main links of the global network of the Church to protect, promote, provide succor and cover to the internationally banned Tamil Tigers. Fr. Jegath Gaspar Raj is somewht different. This catholic priest comes from the diocese of Kottar, Tamil Nadu. He has made a name for himself and become a "crorepathy’ ( Rs. 10 million is one crore) with plenty of political pull in Tamil Nadu politics to back the Tamil Tigers. He has learned the art of mixing politics with music to raise funds for the Tamil Tigers. In his music, politics and fund raising he has managed successfully to exploit the suffering of the Tamils in Sri Lanka to collect millions for the Tamil Tigers.

[ I know lot of people don't want to drag religion in to this. ]

Thusitha, Brother,

I too would advise you to not go further along this dangerous religious path...it is a lose-lose issue that will only drag us into a TRAP that the LTTE would LOVE to EXPLOIT at this time.

Whatever the justification is for it, we just don't want to arouse MORE DIVISIONS and alienate people from one-another in Sri Lanka.

Instead we should FURTHER UNIFY and INTEGRATE people of the different races and religions in our country into ONE PEOPLE with ONE DESTINY.

Let us give ALL PEOPLE of our country a STAKE in the VICTORIES of this great PATRIOTIC WAR undertaken to REUNIFY and SECURE our country. Let each citizen feel this is his/her personal VICTORY too.

This is a UNIQUE time in the post-independence era of Sri Lanka, where most people have become VERY PROUD of being a Sri Lankan. Let us CAPITALIZE on that PRIDE OF BELONGING to SOMETHING GREAT to suppress, overcome, and eliminate residual feelings of separateness and alienation among different segments of the population.

Let us BIND and HEAL existing wounds as far as possible, and set the stage to harness the energies of all of our people to DEFEND and GROW OUR COUNTRY towards a BRIGHT and PROSPEROUS future.

US should think of ‘gunboat diplomacy’
[TamilNut, Thursday, 07 May 2009, 03:31 GMT]
Colombo is on one hand aiming at creating a political and military vacuum for Tamils and on the other hand is aiming at the incarceration of all Tamils either in internment camps or in open prisons. The balance disturbed by US has to be set right by US itself by a timely action such as sending the fleet without waiting for political changes in India, the commentator said.

Bugger! I am still recovering from choking on my Gin & Tonic after reading this bit of outstanding hilarity from TamilNut. The only chaps doing Gunboat diplomacy in Lanka is our own SLN. Here is how those diplomatic negotiations would go:

Fatty: You genocidal murders on that huge gunboat, I want a ceasefire

SLN gunboat: Kaboom!

Fatty: Andawane Muruga, why are you trying to kill me? See what you did to my Admiral Soosa who was standing next to me. He is strewn all over the beach now.

SLN gunboat: Booom! Kaboom! Boom!

Fatty: Saamy, what happened to Pottu? His head just started rollong down the beach. Can I pleash have ceasefire, kind Navy sirs? I don't want to die.

SLN gunboat: Kaboom! Booom! Kaboom! Boom! Kaboom!

Fatty: ...

Cheers!

sandeepani,

From where do you get this news? Even though this sounds music to my ears, any news without verifications from multiple sources is pure rumors to me. I will take all such news with buckets of salt.

Ali,

On the side, we shall not forget the dirty work of D.B.S. Jeyaraj to doctor comments in his favor. This is an extremely dishonest act and in simple words forgery. In his reply to my question, he said that he justifies such forgery since it is his blog. Our comments are very personal to our own world views and he is not entitled to edit others comments even if they are anonymous. He even posts comments in others names to support him. Of course, he can delete them or not publish them. Mass scale forgery like this is good enough to question anything he had done in his past including forging grades in the school. Make use of every opportunity to get this information out.

Sam

I certainly will . If he did not pretend to be a journalist I guess I could understand his behavior . After what he did to our comments I believe most of the comments on his blog are fake . The guys is probably some sort of sociopath .

There is a woman called Gloria Abraham who always posts 2-3 on each new article fawning about him . I bet that is another fake user too . lol

Ninja and other patriots,

SLA is asking us to guess what this object is (the one we are talking about). May be it is the time for any marine engineer to chime in. This obviously is not a tunnel. Given the fact that it has a number of compartments, my first guess is that this is a system of submersible containers for under water smuggling of large weapons. They can bring things loaded and then either lower or drop from a ship deep seas. Since they are just floating below the water line, they can tow modules out of SLN site. They may have used things like this to smuggle arty.

There’s a bit of excitement here with the known Diaspora members, thought it was the acquittal of some suspects in court but something bigger. I wonder some underhand scheme to get them out or amnesty of some sort brokered by ICRC and Norway? If they seek refuge with them in the field it might complicate things with respect to international law.
