A loud-mouth bungling

A clever plan by MIC to finish-off the remaining LTTE cadres under Ram and Uma Ram in the East was bungled by an information leak by a few callous officers and the local media.

However, unknown to the media, a large number of cadres had already surrendered, some had deserted while others were mysteriously gunned down (including the 11 killed yesterday).

But unfortunately, following the wide publicity given to the killing of 11 cadres, there now appears little chance of the remaining 30 odd cadres surrendering to the Army as was planned.

LTTE Leader for the East and its only surviving leader on Sri Lankan soil Ram, now afraid to answer messages from the Army, had instead contacted Karuna Amman and expressed a desire to surrender if Karuna could guarantee his safety. It is yet unclear as to whether Ram and his team would surrenderunder the present context.

Ram, in his conversation with Karuna Amman had claimed Kumaran Pathmanathan, the corrupt and accidental heir to the LTTE's throne had requested him to fight on saying he would send weapons and equipment from abroad.

Have you heard this?

‘Colombo’s Praba’ caught
The stranger at the CSC
The ‘passenger’ was a bald headed male, around five-feet eleven-inches tall, wearing a dark blue long sleeved shirt and black trousers. He wore highly polished shoes, and a gold bracelet on his wrist. He was carrying what appeared to be an envelope in his hand, as he entered the CSC. He signed the Club’s visitors’ book and entered the lobby. As he looked around, he spotted the diplomat whom he had apparently come to meet, who was known to him. The two had a brief chat and the ‘visitor’ handed over the envelope he was carrying to the diplomat. The envelope contained a DVD disc. He stayed with the diplomat till 9:30 pm, when he left the Club.

However, this person was unaware that he was under surveillance by the State Intelligence Service’s (SIS) agents. The DVD he handed over to the diplomat contained old video footages of a massacre of Sinhalese persons by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) sometime ago. But the twist was, he had convinced the diplomat that the video footage was of Tamils killed by the Sri Lankan Army.
Prabha’s real mission
Prabha, the electronics dealer, was one of the persons behind many Tiger activities in and around Colombo, investigations have thus far revealed. During the ceasefire, Prabha had travelled several times to LTTE controlled areas, and met with the LTTE leadership.
The Tigers’ lair
The LTTE had, apparently, funded the construction of a seven-storied luxury apartment complex at 37th Lane, Wellawatte, named Sunflower Apartments. Prabha was instrumental in the purchase of the land and the building of this apartment complex from its inception. This complex became a safe house for LTTE operatives in and around Colombo.
Tiger fangs bared
Prabha was arrested by SIS agents and even as this column is being written, he is being interrogated by SIS and TID agents regarding his links. His shop at Majestic City is being guarded by the Bambalapitiya Police.

Joke of the Millennium

Proposal mooted for Ranil not to contest Presidential and Mahinda to offer him the Premiership

My ribs are aching hard now. I am sure that the patriotic Sri Lankans are laughing now. The habit of asking for something they don't deserve is something Eelamists and the stooges do every day. Whew, what a bargain our Gamini Abhaya got from Don Juan. This particular request shows how disconnected the top scum Ranil Wickramasinghe is. There are many more politicians in Sri Lanka who deserves the premiership than the top scum Ranil Wickramasinghe.

Instead of the premiership, the below is what is in store for him.

People of Sri Lanka
Plaintiff,

vs.

Ranil Wickramasinghe
Defendant.

COMPLAINT

1. Conspiracy by collaborating with white masters to overturn the democratically elected government of Sri Lanka
2. Espionage by giving national security information to white masters.
3. Treason by trying to give a 1/3rd of land mass of Sri Lanka to terrorist
4. Treason by collaborating with terrorists.
5. Crimes by attempting to stall economy by choking foreign investments.

JURY DEMAND

1. Administration of traditional traitor’s punishment at a public square.
2. Life sentence with no parole.
3. Expulsion from Parliament and revocation of civil rights (a trick from the bastard JR Jayawardena)

Are you saying those cadres in eastern jungles are reading all those news in media..???

Ram should decide he will die after surrender or before surrender?

Ha Ha He better send cadres also from abroad. Then we can see how good is our web warriors can fight?

Ninja,

Yes, I agree about the demonstrations in front of embassies. They should be there but it should be peaceful. People should have a chance to peacefully express their anger towards western meddlers.

I think that RW should contest and see a humiliating defeat for himself. RW is at a tough corner now. If he contests he is going to loose in the most ignoble way. If he doesn't contest, still it is humiliation since he admits that he has no chance in the hell of winning the election. What he is trying right now is to save him from humiliation, nothing else, with this fake gesture of no contest while getting the premiership. For a man with an impressive list of acts of treason, he is making absolute mockery our of Sri Lankans with this joke.

As far as Ranil Wickramasinghe and his stooges (mostly the religious fundamentalists in my list) are concerned, they are a danger to national security of Sri Lanka and they should not be given any political office. If there is anything to do with UNP, we should make sure that it is given to patriotic elements within UNP.

After all, there are many within the UPFA (including UNP-D group) who fought hard in the international arena to fend off white masters. I believe that they deserve much more than RW and his stooges who are ever willing to bend over for the meddlers. The only thing RW and his stooges deserve is a place in garbage bins of Sri Lankan history.

Ananda-USA and Other Patriots

There is now justifiable optimism in Sri Lanka of more foreign and local investment, more tourism and business and a boom similar to the one in the mid seventies when the accelerated Mahaweli was implemented.

The lessons from that time are relevant. When Sri Lanka opened up to the free-market and foreign investment at that time, there were many countries who were unhappy, India is the most well known because of ideological and personal issues, but there was also surprisingly Singapore, which covertly helped the insurgency because of threatened business interests.

Given these lessons it is now more essential than ever to have a strong security establishment by strengthening and increasing the numbers of the army, navy air force and the complimentary special forces. Ananda USA - this is what you have been advocating for a long time.

This is to increase security against both internal and external threats. After all business only wants stability and security - and are not too concerned about loss of unfettered freedom.

DW I am not sure what you're saying:

On the one hand you say:

In context of the later paragraphs, in essence this implies that a guarantee of a surrender given to Ram and his people was to be violated by the SL authorities? If so, not good.

Later on you say:

It is yet unclear as to whether Ram and his team would surrender under the present context. .

Well, given what you seem to imply, I don't blame him!

Prabakaran’s parents in government welfare camp

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan Army on Thursday announced that Veraswami Thiruwengadam Velupillai (79) and Velupillai Parvathi Pillai, father and mother of the late LTTE chief Velupillai Prabakaran, are in one of the government temporary welfare camps in Manik Farm in Vavuniya district where 2.5 lakh Eelam War IV displaced are housed.

“Late Prabakaran’s mother and father who had sought refuge with others after exiting from Puthumatthalam area were identified on Thursday by military authorities,” said a Defence Ministry statement.

Military spokesperson Udaya Nayanakkara told The Hindu, “The Army learnt about the presence of parents of Prabakaran in one of the IDP camps in Manik Farm Complex from other displaced sheltered there on Wednesday. On being approached by authorities, parents of Prabakaran confirmed their identity.

“It is immediately not clear as to when and how they ended up in the welfare camp. We presume that they were among the group of 80,000 civilians who left the Tiger-occupied territory from May 13 onwards. All civilians had left the LTTE-occupied zone by evening of May 15”.

Prabakaran’s father was in Sri Lanka government service. He and his wife were among the early batch of Sri Lankan Tamils to go to India and they lived in Tiruchurapalli. As per media reports, they returned to Wanni in May 2003 after the Norway-brokered ceasefire.

In a recent media interaction Vinodini Rajendran, Tornoto-based sister of Prabakaran, described her father as “very kind and soft talking. He was highly disciplined. He never took bribes and abstained from all vices, alcohol and cigarettes included. He worked as a district land officer and volunteered as a trustee at the local temple. He is a religious-minded man, a Hindu.” The family lived in Valvettithurai, a coastal village in the northern Jaffna peninsula, in a small house.

KP’s local agent arrested at IDP campThe local agent of the LTTE’s notorious international arms dealer Kumaran Pathmanadan, aka KP, was arrested by Army intelligence yesterday at a welfare camp in Vavuniya.

Army sources said that the man Identified as Urumaran, was well educated and KP’s direct contact in the supply of weapons to the LTTE.

Initial investigations had revealed that he was fluent in English and some other European languages. He had travelled abroad on nineteen occasions.

He had joined the civilians and reached a welfare camp in Vavuniya but someone who knew about him had tipped off Army intelligence yesterday morning. On being questioned Urumaran had admitted that he was the local handler of arms and ammunition that came to the LTTE from abroad mainly on sea going vessels.

Once these arms vessels reached Sri Lankan waters Urumaran was the one who directed them where and when to unload the weapons. Investigations also revealed that he had been in constant touch with KP even after arriving at the welfare centre, Army sources said.

The investigations were at the initial stage even by late afternoon yesterday and they believe the whereabouts of KP could be traced by questioning and monitoring the telephone calls he received on his satellite phone.

Further details were not available at the time of going to press.

Intense questioning of a certain Sri Lanka Army Lieutenant Colonel now under custody of the Army Intelligence Unit has revealed that an attempt was made to attack the helicopter in which President Mahinda Rajapaksa travelled to attend the passing out function at the Diyatalawa Army complex on December 20 last year.
The Lt. Col. had confessed that he had personally transported a LTTE suicide bomber from Colombo to the Diyatalawa Army camp with his suicide gear, and that the suicide bomber had managed to enter the Army camp at Diyatalawa on that day.
Apart from this, the same Lt. Col. had transported another suicide bomber to the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) on April 4th when the President attended the ‘Dayata Kirula’ Exhibition held there. The suicide bomber had managed to enter the premises. – Asian Tribune

[If we can maintain the current leadership and the patriotism we may be able to develop our country much faster than anyone can guess.]

Tharaka,

You asked THE critical question: "Can we maintain leadership and patriotism in our country in the future?"

To my mind, this is the MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE that our leaders must address NOW. We must not fall back into the apathy that "nothing can be done", and its "every man for himself" view that prevailed in the last 30 years. A CAN-DO attitude that together we will survive and prosper, but if we act alone will decay and die, must be fostered.

It is partly for THIS REASON, to INCLUCATE PATRIOTISM, in addition to national security reasons, that I advocate the creation of a 3,000,000 strong PART-TIME NATIONAL GUARD to backup and support a 500,000 strong full-time SLDF. I have addressed the issue of how to generate income to support the large SLDF in previous posts.

Service in the National Guard should be COMPULSORY for all able-bodied citizens, men and women alike, between the ages of 18 and 60. Periodically, in rotation, they would go for training on government-mandated-leave from their regular jobs. They would learn to handle weapons, and serve in special roles according to military and/or national development needs, and their own skills and training preferences. They would be assigned to serve in-concert and in support of regular SLDF units. As a side benefit, the SLDF personnel, and facilities, can be used to train the public in skills of value to civilian life.

But, MOST IMPORTANTLY, we will have given the average citizen A PERSONAL STAKE in the defense of his/her country, and created a PERSONAL ATTACHMENT to the SLDF. It will no longer be an abstract SLDF, but a PART OF EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US. In this way, we make the SLDF and the PEOPLE a body that is organically and intimately ONE; A PEOPLE's Defence Force if you will.

Furthermore, service in the SLDF and the NATIONAL GUARD should yield TANGIBLE BENEFITS to the individual that goes beyond honor and recognition, such as preference in employment, in further education, housing, etc.

Induction into the services after training should be made AN EVENT THAT WILL BE ETCHED DEEP IN THE MINDS of those who join. For example, a midnight torchlight ceremony on the Balane' Heights, or on Sigiriya, interweaving our national history, and the sacrifices of our heroes, past and present, into the consciousness of the people.

The Israelis induct their service personnel on the heights of the ancient fortress Masada, which was held by the Macabees to the very last against the Romans. It is all for inculcating a deep permanent patriotism in the citizenry that goes beyond any spasmodic call to arms; indeed PATRIOTISM AS A WAY OF LIFE essential to preserving any people threatened with EXTINCTION.

I don't know how many of you realize that we SRI LANKANS were THREATENED with EXTINCTION, and it is only by the grace of the HATARA WARAN DEVIYO protecting our hallowed Janma Bhoomiya, personified by the current GOSL leadership, that we obtained a TEMPORARY REPRIEVE.

Whether we can make that LEASE on national life PERMANENT will depend on us; whether we can summon the wisdom and will, to act and pull together, in the years ahead. That wisdom and determination will not come naturally if left unfocused, but through a deliberate multi-faceted program implemented to INCULCATE PATRIOTISM among the people including the elements I recommend here.

UNITED we will STAND, DIVIDED we will FALL!

Moshe Dyan said...

Ananda,

that is PART of the solution.

the other parts should come from...
1. politics - by a constitution change that NURTURES patriotism instead of CONFUSION.

2. economics - by making patriots the owners of the most powerful financial clout of the country

3. a large military in reserve with regular meetings.

4. a powerful CAPITALIST economy - we need this to be MEANINGFULLY independant. we can't go on begging from one camp to the other IF we want to keep our soverignty.
why a capitalist one????

bcos in a socialist economy the NATION strengthens/donates to the ppl (after taking it from the ppl). in a capitalist one, the ppl strengthens/feeds the nation.

5. social - a cultural revival. A HELL OF A LOT needs to be done in TAMIL cultural development. we should as much as possible develop a SL tamil culture as distinct from tamil madu culture. it is VERY difficult but can be done. LTTE did it to some extent in their favour.

6. spiritual - our ancestors did a GREAT job in attaching spirituality with patriotism.

e.g. there are powerful gods protecting SL.
e.g. places of worship that brought ppl together

this process should be revived.

in israel, 1,2,3 & 5 happen at a grand scale.

A strong and patriotic leadership is necessary for our country. This is not limited to the current individuals who are facing the strongest external forces at the moment. Stability of such leadership is necessary for us even in the long term. It is the Sri Lankan people who will strengthen the hands of the leadership. Internal support helps our leadership to face the internal and external forces. We must be aware of our own strengths and dangers while understanding the importance of our leadership for the country. Idea of increasing the defense for long term is out of questions. It is not an option for us but a mandatory requirement for the stability of the country. I do support to an increase in fulltime defense forces, highly mobile specialized units and a national guard if necessary. We must have continues improvements in the intelligence and the naval capabilities. I do see the recent progress in this areas but I will leave that to the experts to decide. General Sarath Fonseka is right to the point in this issue. He is fully aware of the needs of the future security and already having things rolling. As Sri Lankans we must develop our own products. This is where civilians can contribute. Currently, we are lacking in this area even though there are efforts. Some of these things are already in progress and we must understand its value of it for the country. Our leadership and defense forces have shown us that nothing is impossible. This is just to highlight the importance of it. I do agree the comments made by Ananda-USA as this is only a temporary reprieve. That is also the reason we need a patriotic leader for the country, increased security and our own products.

How do Indian people come into the argument? How is it even germane to the issue? That's supposed to make me feel contrite? The critical issue is that of the IDPs, not Indians or Joe Blow in bumf*ck, Ohio.

Saul said...

Moshe,

You said:

this many deaths on average MUST be expected. Please answer a simple question then:

The SL armed forces as a whole have a total of 230,000 personnel, or so says wikipedia.

By your calculations, applying the SL mortality in this case means an annual death rate of 1380 SL armed forces men. Or, 3.78 per day.

So my question is, you'd be happy if the SL armed forces were to lose upwards of 3 men a day because it is below the national average? .

Using stats in isolation makes no sense.

You also said:

BTW in india the average number of deaths is around 20,000++ per day!!!.

Also please try to understand stats, or if you insist on using stats, restrict their usage to your fanboys on this blog. That way you will not get called out.

20,000 per day eh? You remember that the Indian population is a billion, eight? What does that mean in terms of a percentage? How many deaths is it in terms of a per thousand number?

Even so, how is this even relevant to the IDPs? Partner, you've got a chip on your shoulder so wide, you could try woodcraft as a hobby.

Then you said:

the two are completely different statements!!!!!.

Ok, my bad. So tell me, what does 'not much' mean? Where is 'hearts and minds' in your overall matrix of a super duper SL army of half a million and your rights and responsibilities?

Finally. Capitalizing your letters don't make your points any more or less effective. Grow up.

And there is a huge issue about not allowing NGO vahicle into the IDP camps. If they are really concerned about providing aid for the IDPs they can park the vehicles outside and travel by foot ?

You do realize that you've made my point for me?

That each group is different and that you cannot apply a national average to a sub section, neither for the SL armed forces nor for the IDPs?.

Oh man!

peaceatlast,

a great article no doubt.

"it is fair that largest development work take place in Vanni"

agree. without contradicting it.........

i think it is fair if largest development work takes place WHERE it is SUITED MOST according to a national development plan.

e.g. it MAY BE in hambantota for instance.

Moshe Dyan said...

STD,

it can be applied to each group when the COMPARABLE attributes are there.

SL population and IDP population are similar in age structure THAN the SL population and the SLDFs!!!

you remind me bhairav learning to COUNT!!!

from toiletnet,

"Three independent defence analysts who examined photographs of Sri Lanka Army and LTTE firing positions taken over the no-fire zone confirmed that the range of the LTTE weaponry and the narrowness of the zone make it unlikely that LTTE munitions caused significant civilian casualties.

must be IDIOTS like BRAMAN who got confused over vanni and russia.

1. range of LTTE weapons can be adjusted to ranges within the maximum range

2. LTTE has weapons of different ranges!!!!

3. the zone was not so narrow to make LTTE weapons unusable!!! the "narrowness" ranged from 1.5 km to >2 km.

PLUS what stops using weapons across the LENGTH!!!

That is why your using numbers for the IDPs as a debating point is ridiculous.

You keep making my point for me, every post you make. Do you have the least understanding of stats or logic?

std,

no point wasting further time on this lets agree to disagree.

the toiletnet reference, "Death among the IDPs sheltered in Cheddiku'lam transit camp is on the increase. Five to eight elderly IDPs die daily in the transit camp."

no problem.

SL's death rate = 0.6%
IDP population = 300,000 (roughly)
deaths per year = 0.6% * 300,000 = 1,800
average deaths per day = 1,800/365=5

on average 5 ppl die in IDP camps asit is the NATIONAL AVERAGE!!!!

its nothing to crow about!! just normal.

The story of Sri Lanka downgrading China's help

I am certain that this is a diplomatic move. Now with peace there will be many countries who will want to reap benefits from Sri Lanka.

Isn't there a way that we give preference to the countries who helped us during the war and also in international forums in this such as UNSC and UNHRC?

This is imporatant as apart from many other reasons I am a believer that there were potential economic reasons that some countries backed LTTE and separatism.

Also there should be a way that the friends benefit from been friends of Lanka.

Lastly we are a nation of grateful people. We need to display that now. The buddhist periests that went in a possession and thanked the Russian envoy in SL was great.

While the state is organising many functions to say thanks to SLDF, the non state sector at least plan and event of two say thanks to our friends and state should favor in future GOSL business.

(1) MR/GR/SF, (2) defence forces, (3) LTTE blunders, and (4) our international friends and their unprecedented backing brought us here. If any ONE of the 4 ingriedients didn't play their part we wouldn't have got here.

Moshe,

-------------

You are wrong, please refer the manual.

(a) Killing innocent civilans by LTTE = liberation struggle BUT killing armed terrorists = genocide

(b) Damage due to carpet bombing in Iraq/Afgan = collateral damage BUT shelling LTTE = a war crime.

(c) Creative lies by tamilnet = relaible source BUT UAV footage on LTTE shooting civilins = propaganda.

(d) Shooting down LTTE 'political' wing when they try to fool SLDF to let VP escape = war crime BUT killing 800 unarmed policemen surrenderd = legitimate target.

Therefore

(a) All deaths in a population that has a much higher % old and sick oompared to normal SL mix (and starved and negelected by LTTE for 30 years) = killings by SLDF.

Please note now we are living in 1500 not in 2009.

[ LTTE has weapons of different ranges!!!!]

Moshe,

Also, the most common artillery weapon used by both sides in this war, were mortars, which are INDIRECT fire weapons whose range can be adjusted almost at will by changing the elevation of the barrel from near vertical to 45 deg elevation for maximum range. High explosive Mortar shells are just as destructive to people as HE direct fire artillery shells. There was NO BARRIER to the LTTE using these weapons against their own people.

Furthermore, direct fire artillery can be used at near horizontal elevation at short ranges. There was plenty of space both across the narrow strip of land (1-2km wide) and along its LENGTH (as you point out) for the LTTE to inflict any number of casualties on their people with both INDIRECT and DIRECT fire artillery.

As you say, this excuse is just NONSENSE that defies commonsense.

Editor, The Island. As always you have nailed it Sir,

Victory over diplomatic terrorism - Island Editorial
David sent Goliath reeling in Geneva on Wednesday. Little Lanka, preening herself on defeating terrorism on home soil, scored an impressive victory over 'diplomatic terrorism' in a hostile terrain. At the UNHRC special session, her resolution to counter an attempt to confer pariah status on her was carried with a majority of 17 votes - 29 for, 12 against and 6 abstaining. Nobody expected her to crush terrorism. Similarly, not many thought it would be able to floor the powerful western bloc.

The 29 nations that stood by Sri Lanka represent about 4 billion people while the opposing countries are home to only 0.5 billion. That is the world has overwhelmingly backed Sri Lanka vis-…-vis a dastardly attempt by the western bloc and its hangers-on to hang her. David Miliband, Bernard Kouchner and others will need much bigger fig leaves than Sri Lanka's human rights record to cover their nakedness.

Today, we report that two founding members of a Muslim charity in the US have been sentenced to 65 years in jail for funding Hamas. Surprisingly Bruce Fein, a former US Attorney General, continues to sponsor LTTE terrorism openly on US soil with impunity!

Had the West managed to ram an international 'war crimes' probe down Sri Lanka's throat, non-western countries would have desisted from battling terrorism for fear of being hauled up before international war crimes tribunals. And terrorism would have thrived at a faster rate in the world. In other words, the dozen countries that opposed Sri Lanka's counter resolution, to all intents and purposes, voted for terrorism!

Critics of NAM are trying to accord it a grand funeral prematurely but on Wednesday it manifestly worked as an inertia reel for Sri Lanka. What some politicians flaunted as an international safety net during the 2001-2004 peace process has turned out to be a veritable hangman's noose around Sri Lanka's neck.

Ambassador Dayan Jayatilleka has drawn heavy flak for what his critics term 'megaphone diplomacy'. But, his pugilistic pugnacity, lateral thinking and intellectual restlessness helped rally several nations on Wednesday. Cuba unceremoniously shot down a set of proposals Germany tried to incorporate into Sri Lanka's resolution. Dayan, as well as many others including Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe, needs to be commended for their excellent performance.

However, piqued and shamed, the western bloc is not likely to give up its campaign to persecute this country for wiping out terrorism with no heed for its call for a truce. The western powers must be smarting more from the ignominious comedown in Geneva.

A prerequisite for a country's independence, de Gaulle once said, was the bomb [nuclear capability]. A strong economy is also an option for a smaller nation. Therefore, it behoves the Rajapaksa government to concentrate on the economic front urgently and turn swords into ploughshares so to get rid of the country's chronic dependency.

Meanwhile, we are being made witness to a spate of unspeakable demonstrations near some foreign missions in Colombo. They are being staged by the so-called rent-a-mob brigade wrapping itself in the flag. They targeted the Canadian High Commission on Wednesday. The government must rein in those dregs bringing the country into disrepute. We let out a howl of protest when our diplomatic missions came under terror attacks, didn't we? Anyone has a right to protest but the sky is not the limit. Let none spoil Sri Lanka's spectacular victory over terrorism.

Unless we look for the hard points - physical features of the ship that are difficult to change -we may miss this "TROJAN HORSE".

2. Are they coming to extract few of the very important Hard core LTTE?

4.Have a violent fight on board the ship at the time SLN boards it and accuses SL of all kinds of wrongs?

USA wanted to teach a lesson to leaders who displace the US $ as their currency. that's exactly what saddam did. he went for the euro & paid with his life. after the americans invaded iraq the first thing they did was make iraq go back to the dollar.

the US $ is in high demand because it is used for all international transcations. the USA gets away by printing trillions of $ without anybody questioning because of the dollar's international recognition. if not for its international currency status the dollar would have been less valuable than the paper it's printed on because of inflation.

the moment that status is reduced the dollar will start the down hill journey. it has already started to happen with the chinese starting to do transactions with their own yuan. the way the US is bailing out rogues & the money it wastes on BS wars coupled together with their record debt will catch up. no escape this time.

in a couple of years the dollar will be really under pressure.

after about 2010 the chances are that their will be a major stock market bust like no other & the dollar almost useless. there will be millions of poor americans. It'll scock the world. america will never be the same again.

although this may sound like a worst case scenerio lots of leading US economists are predicting it.

velluprabhakaran said...

it looks like the western governments are becoming a bigger threat to sri lanka than the LTTE.

well, it's good for mahinda & tough for ranil. the more pressure from the west & more resistance from GOSL means MR becomes more popular with the sinhala majority. This must be one of the most polarized societites in the world. tamils are mentally in the doldrums. yesterday i met a tamil guy on some business. he told me in sinhala "api issarath mentally vetila hitiye, than num flat vela inney". he was referring to the death of vesapillai obviously. this is a guy who can speak sinhala. we can imagine the others. so everybody who dreams of peaceful reconciliation after the war can forget it real quick. there's nothing of the sort in the cards. no wonder sarath fonseka wants a 300,000 army. (or is it 500,000). more the merrier.

I always knew the westerners were backing vesapillai to the hilt albeit covertly.

[Return of the talking parrot]

V Sudarshan
ExpressBuzz.com
May 29, 2009

Iran into Killi, the talking parrot from Killinochi again on Thursday. Killi was in a talkative mood. I was in a mood to drink. We adjourned home, and I carefully overlooked the bottle of Famous Grouse and opened Black Dog instead. While I knocked back a few Killi half-heartedly pecked at birdseeds. She bitterly blamed Vaiko and Nedumaran for “comprehensively misleading” the (erstwhile) LTTE chief Prabhakaran on a daily basis therefore leading him to his debacle. Killi also explained the dynamics of the first family of Tamil Nadu’s politics and predicted that Karunanidhi would give Stalin a birthday present to remember by finally making him deputy chief minister. Somewhere along the way Black Dog started running up and down my system and I therefore apologise for any inaccuracies/distortions in reporting the highlights of our conversation, much of which I can no longer recall. Excerpts:

Me: You know, I still can’t get over the fact that Prabhakaran is no longer around.

Killi: Neither can half the Tamils in the world. What I can’t understand is the role of Vaiko and Nedumaran and that communist fellow Mahendran. Do you know that Nadesan used to call these people two or three times a day and ask for political updates on the situation in Tamil Nadu?

Do you mean to tell me that in the middle of fighting the war Nadesan actually had time for political small talk?

No. No. Not small talk. Every day Vaiko and Nedumaran would tell him that Tamil Nadu was burning, that the lawyers were fully behind them in their sympathy strike and that it would continue and gather momentum, that Muthukumar’s death was going to spark a wave of suicide deaths, that the DMK was going to lose very badly in the elections and that in New Delhi BJP was going to come to power after which things would be hunky dory for the LTTE. These guys gave the LTTE leadership a lot of false hopes. The LTTE was led up the garden path….

That’s strong language.

I’ve never told you this before, but Nadesan asked Nedumaran to prepare a surrender draft, I think it was in the end of March. In the language that was used the word “surrender” did not figure. Nedumaran advised that the LTTE should say they were “ready for a ceasefire.” Nadesan came back and said that Sri Lankans were specifically looking for “surrender of arms.” Nedumaran advised them to stick by “ceasefire and ready for negotiations.” It is diabolical. With friends like Vaiko and Nedumaran, Prabhakaran didn’t need enemies!

By the way, I have also heard that the LTTE was in touch with a certain central minister.

Yes. I know the one you are talking about. This central minister told the LTTE interlocutor to get in touch with the high commissioner in Sri Lanka, Alok Prasad for safe-pa…

[Prabhakaran still alive, say Vaiko, Thirumavalavan]

ExpressBuzz.com, TIRUNELVELI/CHENNAI
May 29, 2009

MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Wednesday said India had made a mistake by voting in support of Sri Lanka in the resolution passed at the UN Human Rights Council.

Speaking at a marriage function at the MDMK legal wing secretary Subburathnam’s family in Tirunelveli, Vaiko asserted that LTTE chief Prabhakaran was still alive.

For the last five months, 1,45,000 Tamils had been killed in Sri Lanka and 3,50,000 people were living in unsafe conditions.

The betrayal by the Indian government had caused immense grief to them, he said.

The Sri Lankan Government was giving contradictory information regarding Prabhakaran. His father Velupillai was alive, and why they had not conducted a DNA test, Vaiko questioned.

Vaiko said that he was not worried about having lost the election.``Money has won the election and democracy has been temporarily destroyed. But as people have very many needs, I cannot criticize them. The DMK and the Congress distributed money in the State and Tamil Nadu should be rescued from this money culture,” Vaiko added.

Sri Lankan MP Sivajilingam and others were present.

Meanwhile, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan said in Chennai on Thursday that LTTE supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran would soon emerge from his hideouts to lead the fifth phase of ethnic war in Lanka, all for securing a separate land for the island Tamils.

He was addressing a party gathering after a mammoth rally and payinghomage to the LTTE frontliners who had embraced a Martyr’s death at a makeshift memorial erected in their honour near the Chepauk Guest House in the city.

However, his remarks had come as a surprise to many at a time when the killing of Prabhakaran had been confirmed by a top LTTE intelligence source, of course after a considerable watch and wait at the global level.

Thirumavalavan alleged that AIADMK general secretary J Jayalaithaa had not been so vocal on the Lankan Tamils’ issue after the elections and this had given credence to her anti-LTTE stance all these years.

He also said that he wanted to fight a separate political battle with the help of all pro-LTTE groups in the state. But it did not fructify when the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), PMK and the Left parties had aligned with the AIADMK to fight the Lok Sabha elections, he added.

He claimed that Prabhakaran had the gusto to take on the Sinhala Army despite the military support extended to the island government by the world nations like India, China, Pakistan, Russia, the US, the UK and Bangladesh.

A resolution adopted at the end of the rally wanted the trial of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa before the International War Crimes Tribunal for the genocide of innocent island Tamils.

-----------------

The Times said it had acquired confidential U.N. documents that record nearly 7,000 civilian deaths in the no-fire zone up to the end of April. The toll then surged, the paper quoted unidentified U.N. sources as saying, with an average of 1,000 civilians killed each day until May 19, when the government declared victory over the Tamil Tiger rebels.

That means the final death toll is more than 20,000, The Times said. "Higher," a U.N. source told the paper. "Keep going."

The United Nations has previously said 7,000 civilians were killed in fighting between January and May. A top Sri Lankan official called the 20,000 figure unfounded.

Gordon Weiss, a U.N. spokesman in Sri Lanka, told CNN that a large number of civilians were killed -- though he did not confirm the 20,000 figure.

"Up until a certain point, we had very good evidence to show that there were about 7,000 people that were killed," he said. "Then the intense battle kicked in and there were many more deaths, but we didn't know exactly how many.

"Things went really bad" after the battle began, Weiss said.

can you PROVE what he says???

here's how.

1. go to this page and select "Population of Sri Lanka by ethnic group 1881 to 2001"
2. copy the table with the heading "population....."

3. open a spreadsheet

4. paste on A1 onwards

5. analyse the population growth from one census to the next. do it for sinhalese, sri lankan tamils and the total from 1921 onwards.

6. check the increase for sri lankan tamils from 1971 to 1981. it is 33%. compared to ALL other increases this is ABNORMAL and VERY VERY HIGH. there is a reduction in indian tamils and a HUGE HUGE increase in SL tamils.

7. so what has happened?????

8. what anil amarasekera says is true.

Ananda – USA, Moshe Dayan, Asithri and others,

Thanks for making the DW as a place to discuss and to exchange different opinions (both constructive and destructive: D)

I have not contributed as much as others. However, I read your comments with great interest and pride.

I have few ideas for DW congregation.

1. We have a memorial for fallen heroes opposite the parliament. How many of us visited and paid our respect to them? We must at least once a year visit this place and pay our respect to these brave hearts (2-minutes silence is a good idea).

We must also take our children to this “Temple of Fallen War Heroes” and teach them our past, tell them how these young men guarded our nation from all adversaries.

We, the expat, need to take an extra effort on this. We must be able to spend few hours of our stay in SL for this purpose.

This visit must be treated as a pilgrim.

2. We must also have a national Remembrance Day (as we do in the UK).

3. We must also build a museum near the parliament.

It should contain a small synopsis of each fallen hero, the history of the LTTE atrocities and humanitarian operation conducted by the SLDF to free these innocent people form LTTE clutch. We can also re-write some of the heroic movements in the battle and the heroic acts done by some of these brave men.

Most of my mates in the college cadet platoon were either KIA or MIA. I still remember those faces. Likewise, so many young, honest and brave youth give their life to protect our motherland.

I shall never forget those fallen brave hearts.

May triple gem bless them all!

Calls for war crimes inquiry over 20,000 civilian deaths in Sri Lanka

"Sri Lanka faced new calls for a war crimes inquiry today after an investigation by The Times revealed that more than 20,000 civilians were killed – mostly by the army – in the latter stages of the war against the Tamil Tigers. "

Jeremy Page is an LTTE stooge who keeps churning out LTTE propaganda through Times UK. Jeremy Page is a new age terrorist stooge spewing out what is being fed to him by LTTE terrorist lobby based in UK, France, Germany, Switzerland and Norway.

After Mary Colvin was disgraced for her lollipop affair with the terror Chief Velupillai Prabhakaran she can not raise her head again. Therefore, Jeremy Page has taken her torch and now has become the LTTE Agent of Times UK.

Goolge said...

Anatomy of a lie:

Stage1 - UK Times makes the allegation of 20,000 killed.

Stage2 - International media pick it up and repeat it. Some repeat it without proper attribution, making it even more real.

Stage 3 - Call for war crimes inquiry.

GOSL should have got in their and made an official statement at stage 1. Even now, there is no official statement as far as I know, simply what individual officials have said (e.g Palitha).

The statement doesn't have to be long, but it should point out the game the Brits are trying to play.

Exiled Patriot,

that's a brilliant link you posted - even the Americans don't believe the s@#t coming from UK papers.

Here's the text of that article:

The White House has taken a swipe at the British press in an effort to fend off questions about photographs that reportedly show US soldiers in Iraq raping and sexually abusing prisoners.

At the daily White House press briefing, spokesman Robert Gibbs was asked to comment on a report in yesterday's Telegraph that quoted a retired American general describing shocking details of photographs from US detention facilities in Iraq, which President Barack Obama has declined to release to the public.

"If I wanted to read a write-up today of how Manchester United fared last night in the Champions League cup, I might open up a British newspaper," Gibbs said. "If I was looking for something that bordered on truthful news, I'm not sure it would be the first stack of clips I picked up."

The Telegraph quoted retired Major General Antonio Taguba, who investigated abuses at Abu Ghraib prison, as saying that the unreleased photos "show torture, abuse, rape and every indecency" committed on prisoners in US custody.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said the Telegraph "completely mischaracterised the images", and said "none of the photos in question depict the images that are described in that article".

Gibbs twice more criticised the British press. "I think if you do an even moderate Google search, you're not going to find many of these newspapers and truth within, say, 25 words of each other," he said, adding, "I hate to lend any more credibility to nonfactual reports."

In particular, I agree with building a WAR MEMORIAL and War Museum for people to visit. I was planning to propose such a message myself.

In addition to honoring the Heroes who fought to liberate and reunify the nation, the MUSEUM must contain A FULL DISPLAY of LTTE ATROCITIES over this 30 year period.

The museum should contain a movie theater/auditorium where people can go and view a series of films in different languages at different times, or wear earphones and select their language to accompany the video. This auditorium can also periodically feature talks by historians and terrorism experts from time to time.

In addition, there should be booths with computers connected to the museum DIGITAL ARCHIVE where people can perform research on the Eelam conflict, and perhaps, submit comments to the museum articles, as on a moderated blog.

DOES Congressman Heath Shuler's favourable comments on Sri Lanka signal a change in US administration attitude towards Sri Lanka?

MY CONCLUSION: Much too Early to Tell

[US Congressman Heath Shuler (Democrat-Waynesville, North Carolina) ]

As mentioned above, Shuler is a somewhat conservative Democrat. He opposes abortion[7] and gun control, and also takes a hard line on illegal immigration.[8] These stances are not surprising given the nature of his district, which has a strong tinge of social conservatism (especially in Asheville's suburbs). However, on economic and environmental matters, Shuler tends to vote more with his party. He is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, a caucus of moderate-to-conservative House Democrats.

Not long after his election, he became close friends with Brad Ellsworth, a fellow conservative freshman Democrat from Indiana.[9]

In 2007, Shuler introduced proposed legislation co-sponsored with fellow North Carolina Congressman Walter Jones to require airlines to have sections of the aircraft where large movie screens would not be visible.[10]

Reportedly owing to his success in real estate, Shuler was named chairman of the House Small Business Subcommittee on Rural and Urban Entrepreneurship.[11] He is also a deputy majority whip.

Shuler won his bid for re-election in 2008. He defeated Asheville City Councilman Carl Mumpower by a 62%-36% margin--a massive sophomore surge. He easily carried all 15 counties in the district, including traditionally heavily Republican Henderson County.

In early 2009, there was speculation that he may run against Richard Burr for the United States Senate in the 2010 elections.[12] On March 9, 2009 Shuler released a statement saying that he would not run for the seat.[13]

A fiscal conservative, Shuler voted against the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 both times it came before the House.[14][15] He later joined seven other conservative House Democrats in voting against the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, an $819 billion economic stimulus bill proposed by President Barack Obama.

..........
US and world must help Sri Lanka re-settle IDPs - US Congressman

SriLankaGuardian.org
May 29, 2009

The standards at the IDP camps where Internally Displaced are accommodated are much higher contrary to what had been reported in the US, and the international community should cooperate with the government in reconstruction efforts by increasing aid. The US said so at a press briefing at the Hilton, Colombo today (29).

He also congratulated the Sri Lankan government on the victory against terrorism, and commended the remarkable work and efforts of the government in putting together the IDP camps in such a short period of time with considerable facilities available to the IDPs despite the many difficulties faced by the government.

He pointed out the importance of de-mining in order to create the conditions to allow IDPs to return to their homes safely and as quickly as possible.

In addition to touring the camps, he met with President Mahinda Rajapaksa and a number of government ministers. He said in his meeting with the President he had gained a better understanding of the situation facing the country at the conclusion of the war. He comments positively on allowing full access to the country and relief villages where the Internally Displaced are accommodated.

Shuler stated at the conclusion of his visit “I hope that my visit here is an important step in building a strong US, Sri Lankan relationship.”

US & West are not going to give up & Times headline caption and the accusing articles spreading over several inside pages are further proof . This is not an isolated article but a result
of concerted effort by the West & US to denigrate SL in the face of defeat at UNCHR as well as due to their failure at saving Velu and thus prevent the collapse of LTTE . With further problems well anticipated in time to come, isn't it a good move that we should also do a counter move as we nicely did at the UNCHR; why not we bring a no confidence move against that perverted bitch Pillai;
we can nicely make a case that she is good & helpful but her emotions as an ethnic tamil has put her under tremendous pressure which could impede her performance at this crucial stage where SL has to depend on the UNCHR for unbiased support. We may not win but may give us some breathing space to change the attention.

I think the BEST vote to SL at the UNCHR was from South Africa which I think SL did not expect initially. When its envoy Pillai campaigned against SL that was like a slap in her face by her own government.
We should make use of this public faux pas to this bitch and put her under further pressure by a move to discredit her. With her at the helm she is bound to concoct further misery to SL.We should canvass with other friendly governments to project her bias & resulting hindrance to IDP work in SL. GOSL should work hard to make friends with the new government in SA which is a very important country to the UK & the West trying to keep on their side always due to Zimbabwe.

Very unlikely. This is a concerted effort as Suren Said. West is still trying to get us. SL government should not be stupid as to think west have given up. This would be going on for at least few more months.

We should do our best to discredit Navi Pillai. We should be calling her LTTE Pillai from now on. Our government spokesman should pick this up and start addressing her that way. I mean have captured many LTTE cadres. Surely one of them might confess to Navi Pillai being on LTTE payroll.

My feeling is that this will not change a thing and we should not expect it to change. US ambassador Robert Blake threatened our Gamini Abhaya with bogus war crime charges and I am sure that they are behind the recent monkey dance in UN too. They are just double faced bastards I will not touch even with a 100 ft long pole. US was listening to RW who is most disconnected with the common man of Sri Lanka. US has no idea who Gamini Abhaya to Sri Lanka is. Indeed, only a Sri Lankan can understand the political power Gamini Abhaya can have in Sri Lanka. Last minute attempts by USA with bogus war crime charges will never ever be erased from our peoples memories. We have to disassociate these behind-the-scene-terror-supporting and preach-what-you-don't-practice donkeys as much as possible. It would cost about $3 billion to get a decent mass rapid transit system in Colombo of about 150km total lenght. This will SEVERLY REDUCE TRAFFIC IN COLOMBO. This has to be done.

[My feeling is that this will not change a thing and we should not expect it to change. ]

I largely agree with you.

BUT, the US is one country we cannot afford to ignore, or allow to become an enemy. WE have to WIN them over QUICKLY, and that is POSSIBLE.

There are a number of reasons:

1. GRATITUDE: The US was the first country that proscribed the LTTE, long before 9/11, and US leadership catalyzed the proscription of the LTTE by 37 other countries. We must remember that. Also, US administrations change, but the American People remain largely the same, and have no axe to grind in Sri Lanka, although they would be concerned about SL falling into China's orbit, as a national security issue.

It is important for us to convey the message that US neglect of Sri Lanka defence, and aid needs, dictated we turn to other parties. The US has only itself to blame. The same is true of India.

2. EXPERIENCE: Barack Obama's administration is very new, and they have much to learn about the real politics of confronting global terrorism. As he comes to grips with these issues, the stand of his administration will evolve to largely coincide with that of the GOSL: 2.1. That anti-terrorist wars cannot be fought by listening to humanitarian watchdogs who have VESTED FINANCIAL interests driving them to exploit every opportunity to demonize elected governments while condoning acts by terrorists on whom they cannot exert any similar influence; 2.2. That democracies are very vulnerable to terrorism that deliberately exploit the freedoms guaranteed by democracy; 2.3. That if democracies are to effectively confront, defeat terrorism and survive, laws human rights values that apply under normal conditions must be temporarily suspended.

3. INCONSISTENCY OF POLICIES: The US will soon come to realize its own Double Standards and the need for CONSISTENCY in the applications of its principles. This will happen very soon, because Barak Obama is a person drive by broad principles, more than instinct. The US will see, for example, that urging Pakistan to wipe out Al-Quaida and Taliban in Pakistan militarily, "civilian casualties" notwithstanding, while castigating Sri Lanka for achieving spectacular success in doing precisely that is an INCONSISTENT and UNTENABLE position. If the US sticks to this position, then it will find itself TOTALLY unable to defend its war against terrorist threats to itself.

4. ECONOMICS: The US is still the largest market for Sri Lankan products in the world. We must preserve our most favoured trading partner status to get access to that market.

SRI LANKA's POLICIES:

As you and I have always advocated, Sri Lanka cannot depend on the internal politics and confused minds of other countries. Sri Lanka's policies must be driven by its own NATIONAL INTEREST, in the LONG TERM. The long term national interest is NOT IN WEDDING OURSELVES exclusively to ANY current or future global/regional power, but in having as many powerful allies as we can everywhere.

Could we have EVER dreamed of the US Position against Srii Lanka in the last few months, a year ago? Could we have anticipated Israel taking Sri Lanka to task at the WHO? Could we have dreamed of the UK and Germany, primary military allies of the US in Iraq, castigating Sri Lanka in its war against terrorism? No, we could not have, predicted these Double Standards being applied to us.

Things are changing fast in global alignments and politics. We have to NURTURE our relationships with ALL major powers, because we CANNOT PREDICT when we will be abandoned, and for what reason, because we are unimportant ECONOMICALLY or MILITARILY.

So, for example, if Sri Lanka gives China access to Hambantota, we can ask US assistance to develop and use some other port. Sri Lanka has already entered into an agreement to provide services to the US Navy...that can be extended...in return for substantial assistance in varoous areas...of course. It is important, however, that NO ONE FOREIGN COUNTRY gets a DOMINANT stake in Sri Lanka, big enough to severely disrupt the country if they pull out, or for Sri Lanka to be blackmailed by any such threat. Those same considerations apply to INDIAN investments in Sri Lanka also.

In fact such PROTECTIONS against ECONOMIC And/or MILITARY "COLONIZATION" should be incorporated in the CONSTITUTION of Sri Lanka.

UNTIL Sri Lanka becomes the South Korea of the Indian Ocean...An ECONOMIC DYNAMO...a militarily self-sufficient nation with weapons to export to friends... that everyone wants as an ALLY, each of these major powers will support and abandon us without a second thought in their OWN NATIONAL INTEREST.

Suren,

Agree 100% about Navi Pillai.

We must never do things at the heat of the moment but serve everything cold. There is nothing personal when it comes to securing the future of our kith and kin and sovereignty of Mother Lanka.

1)First Line- maintain good diplomatic relations with every one and keep them informed of the truth.

2)Second Line- If the above fails then isolate important enemies in the countries of concern. e.g. Navi Pillai:
In the recent Star Trek movie, young James Kirk is adviced by the old Spock about how to undermine his own younger self, who had been given Captain's position:

"He cannot be captain if he is emotionally compromised. You must find a way of getting him to show it. I know I am compromised because I just lost my home-planet"

Whether it is by getting them to throw a tantrum, discovering any money trails or other scandal, all is fare (viz. Milliband).

3)Third Line- If above two fail then the next line of attacking the hidden agendas (whether true or false) of countries or organisations concerned is another approach. The goals of this approach would be either to neutralise any moves by them or to win sympathy of citizens or members of these groups or to encourage them to desist out of embarrassment:

As the current fault lines indicate, Christianity is a good one to use for leverage (keep in mind that our best patriots have been Chritians going back 400 years- more about this later). This is not about attacking Jesus or Christianity but about pointing the finger at aggressors with Christian backgrounds. You see they cannot help being brought up with certain prejudices (i.e. if they are non-christian, particularly muslim and secondly if they are non-white then they must be bad by nature). It is deep within them. Further, they have a huge guilt complex about being seen that way. So, given that almost all the countries reigned against Sl and most of the NGO's are of Christian background (if you see Michael Corrine show at Ananda's blog you will also see the Tamilistanis trying to leverage the Christian factor into it, the only way they know, by attempting to demonsie the other)

examples:
Ananda_USA achieved a great cue in placing a comment on an Australian Christian website which put up a false-allegation by LTTE supporters.

I put an example of what a patriot wrote to a well meaning AI supporter, bringing the Christian angle in. There was immediate remorse in this situation by the way.

4) The next line of defence is to gather evidence of the involvement by the above orgnaisations and countries or any allies in crimes against SL and take them to court (the most expensive option but as our resources grow this would be a possibility). This would involve overting the covert Great Game agendas of the foreign powers (see below).

SASWe must also build a museum near the parliament.

It should contain a small synopsis of each fallen hero, the history of the LTTE atrocities and humanitarian operation conducted by the SLDF to free these innocent people form LTTE clutch. We can also re-write some of the heroic movements in the battle and the heroic acts done by some of these brave men.
Now that there, sirrahs, is a freakin brilliant idea. Dead on!

MayilRavana මයිල් රාවන said...

My next post is in alignment with Ananda-USA's assertion of the importance of keeping USA on side:

1) Everything is about Money (or security that it brings)
2) All great powers have fought wars to protect their sources of wealth and to protect assets used to protect their wealth or to gain wealth. They are not interested in killing just for the sake of it. This even applied to VP and Tamil Diaspora.
3) To explain the above further, the US used the WWI to become an economic power by ramping up its its capacity to produce technology for War and Peace and utilising its new found technology in electricity and the telephone. The WWII was used at the Brettenwood? agreement to force Great Britain to transfer the World currency from the pound to the US-dollar. Subsequent US intrigues have all been to secure oil/energy wealth in the World. This is the primary goal under which protection of the Oceans has been subsumed.
4) Recent Article by M K Bhadrakumar, an Indian Diplomat nicely outlines the issue of the Great Game in the Indian Ocean in which a struggle for supremacy between the US, India and China are posed as the future of power in the World. Sri Lanka is central to this and is thus extremely important from a strategic point of view. It is in the interest of SL to juggle the three great powers in her attempt to secure her borders.

Why did the US suddenly turn against SL?

IMHO, there was a cascade of events which led to this:

US has always wanted complete control of the island which is what it always want in ensuring complete economic monopoly in its pursuit of security for US citizens. This would be because 50% of World's trade and 70% of oil goes past SL in huge ships. Protecting and controlling these assets would be easy with a base in SL, which permits huge ships to be berthed there.

India was a hindrance (always). Following the successful management of the breakup of the Soviet Block, India was gradually brought within the US circle of influence. Of course it comes with some compromise. India is not likely to completely bow to the US.

Further control of India was assured by the presence of the Tamil-insurgency, the continuation of which, kept India relatively stable. However, I suspect that following 9/11, the importance of SL as a base became more acutely important. A deal was probably struck with RW to hand over the sovereignty of SL to the US (covertly of course- I still recall one of the ministers of RW cabinet saying that the LTTE would not be able to escape the "sefety-net" because we have "very powerful friends").

I am sure VP and Tamil diaspora would have been aware of this and took (fortunately, the poor dumb asses) steps to keep RW out and get MR in. Whatever the case MR came in, much to the displeasure of the US. This is when the tide began to change.

continued

MayilRavana මයිල් රාවන said...

The Great Game continued

MR made 2 specific trips to the US and was increasingly coldly received, prompting him to express his frustration. Similar treatment was given by India but he was much more cool about it. The US-India alliance must have expected MR to capitulate but instead he appears to have limited the Military agreements with the US. Furthermore, he turned to China and Iran (in additions to the traditional, Pak, Israel, Ukraine) and later to Russia as well.

Panic Stations! US was hoping to control the Indian Ocean with the Indians and the Pacific with the Chinese thus balancing India and China against each other. The divide and rule policy of the Anglo-Saxons (very effective policy I must say , but one with its own risks), was threatening to unravel very fast.

First Russia had secured most of the World's gas supplies and was reasserting itself. China was completing its string of pearls by expanding the Hambanthota port. Some say even a space port in the south of SL would be of strategic advantage to China.

China coming into the Indian Ocean would significantly alter the US position of being the only power in three Oceans to one of three in the all important Indian Ocean. (Don't forget the tilt of South Americans towards China as well). China is well poised to complete its capacity to be a World encircling Naval Power with Cuba, South America (Panama may still be a challenge for China), Egypt, Sri Lanka and the Kra Canal in place.

Boy! Did the US panic. They went into overdrive with an unnecessary plan to return to status quo with LTTE. What on earth made them consider this I don't know, but that appears to be what they did.

Then when the LTTE was suddenly and beyond their prediction, vanquished, there was immediate attempts at doing an Iraq on SL. This time the real International Community were ready and were not going to be taken in by the Great Games of the US.

The last gambit of the US ended in a further loss. Now China drove home an alliance ustilising, Sri Lanka in the HRC as a bargaining chip. Thus the new alliance of China, Thailand, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Egypt, Brazil and Cuba forms the future secure lines communications for the Chinese Navy). Panama awaits. So two tiny countries, SL and Panama wait to benefit from this new situation. India was brought into the equation (no doubt by major diplomatic maneuverings by SL which has been showing evidence of mediating between India and China for sometime). Added to the bargain is an offer of observer status in the Shanghai Cooperation which includes Russia!

Keep in mind that Sri Lanka has been a bargaining chip for the Great Powers beginning with Treaty of Amiens. Methinks that SL will be a bargaining chip for the Chinese in thier negotiations with the US to obtain unfettered access to Panama Canal. The die has not been cast in this strategy yet. There is room for SL to maneuver the great powers. Inviting the US for a greater share should be part of this especially as Diego Garcia lease is coming up.

Don't you love that guy Dayan Jayathileke? It is amazing how sworn enemies like Jayathileke and JVP come together in the interests of mother Lanka in this. (I think Jayathileke has the edge though)

:D

BTW, in this context, the diplomatic approaches against people like Navi Pillai appear trivial don't they.

Never the less we must play the small games along with the Great Game.

I think some monkeys in UN are speculating about 20,000 casualties (dead+injured). For 'UK Times' monkeys, casualties=dead.

In their own words "The figure of 20,000 casualties was given to The Times by UN sources, who explained in detail how they arrived at that calculation."

If 20,000 were dead from shelling, then (my god) over 100000 should have been injured. These monkeys are gone crazy.

TIMES SAYS 20,000 CIVILIANS KILLED BY ARMY

Look guys, all this talk about British sense of justice and fair play is absolute rot. They give credit where credit is due to us non-whites only as long as it does not exceed their achievements. Now they say that we killed 20,000 Tamil civilians. 20,000? Where the hell did this figure come from? Can't deny though that it is a mathematical beauty. A number that can be divided by 10, four times without leaving any remainder, like, our guys got rid of all the civilian corpses without leaving a remainder.

20,000? Come on guys? We know why you Brits are trying to play it down. It is Dresden. Right? Ring a bell? Well read this from Wikepedia:

[The Bombing of Dresden by the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and United States Army Air Force (USAAF) between 13 February and 15 February 1945, twelve weeks before the surrender of the Armed Forces (Wehrmacht) of Nazi Germany, remains one of the most controversial Allied actions of the Second World War. In four raids, 1,300 heavy bombers dropped more than 3,900 tons of high-explosive bombs and incendiary devices on the city, the baroque capital of the German state of Saxony. The resulting firestorm destroyed 13 square miles (34 km2) of the city centre. Estimates of civilian casualties vary greatly, but recent publications place the figure between 24,000 and 40,000.]

(And of course, independent verification by journalists like us is not possibe as most of us were not born at that time).

Now you see the picture? They don't want some Brownies in a far off old colony to out do that. And don't forget that they did it in 3 days whereas those fucking brownies took about a week to finish off just 20,000. Mind you we had the advantage of a smaller area. Size of a foot ball field only.

One should not ignore these "UK Times” allegations. The rest of the Western media is now parroting the same.
We should take precautions before this gets out of hand. The west is not done yet. I think some thing is cooking behind the seen participated by the 'west' and the 'western components' of the UN. Until they get an investigation they will increase the death toll. (By next week it may grow up to 30,000). They will keep the pressure up until the world buckles on its feet. Whenever we reject the baseless accusations they will always ask for an investigation.
In case of an investigation, main witnesses would be the LTTE doctors, LTTE priests and LTTE paid local and international NGO's. It can get tricky even though the possibility is not huge. We better have a contingency plan.

At the moment I am staying in somewhere close to Singapore. Yesterday evening I could watch a program on Sri Lanka’s problem (mainly on IDP issue) in Vasanthan TV. I didn’t see the first few minutes. I expected a very biased program, but it was not bad. Compared with Times, BBC and other western media it didn’t try to criticize the government by giving false reports. They interviewed a few people (some Tamils, two ministers from Sri Lanka, a few NGOs). Some complained about marginalization of Tamils after independence (normal BS). Some argued that NGOs should get the access to IDP camps without any restriction and they complained right people don’t get aids. One gentleman (A Sikh) from Mercy Relief commented on his experience at IDP camps. He said that he can’t understand about complains that right people don’t get aids. He has visited the camps personally and he said all the aids are given to IDPs. And nobody has complained about marginalization or government blocking them to receive aids. He emphasized that there was no complain about not receiving aids. He told that any organization should get the ministry of defense clearance (for the organization and all personals) as a security measure. Since they were involved in Tsunami work they have got the permission without any problem. Business community of little India also collecting funds. They talk only about the fund collection procedure and what they are going to do. Nothing about LTTE.
Main conclusions one can get from the program is that past is over and the government should go for an acceptable solution and everybody should help the resettlement of IDPs.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

Split wide open among Tigers
By P K Balachandran
ExpressBuzz.com, Colombo
May 30, 2009

Sitting over the well-endowed war chest of the decapitated Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the organisation’s arms procurer and international fund manager, Selvarasa Pathmanathan, is now trying to take over its leadership, informed sources say.

But Pathmanathan, better known by his earlier name Kumaran Pathmanathan or KP, is reportedly opposed by Manivannan alias Castro, who had also dealt with the LTTE’s finances overseas earlier.

The opponents of Pathmanathan are said to be exploiting the fact that the slain Tiger chieftain, Velupillai Prabhakaran, had sidelined KP for some time and had recalled him only recently, a short while before the final debacle earlier this month.

The suave Pathmanathan, fluent in several European languages, and with contacts with the movers and shakers in the world, has chosen to portray the post-Prabhakaran LTTE as a democratic organisation wanting to fight for the rights of the Sri Lankan Tamils in a peaceful and democratic way.

This approach is expected to attract the support of the western governments keen on keeping the Tamil resistance alive in Sri Lanka in the post- Prabhakaran period if only to check the rising power of the ultra nationalistic Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The war-mongers among the LTTE’s leadership abroad oppose KP’s plan.

They had castigated him for announcing that Prabhakaran was dead. The warmongers are said to be a formidable group because at this point of time at least, the Tamil diaspora believes in the efficacy of war. The diaspora wants armed resistance to go on and are afraid that KP may deny this project the necessary funds.

Intelligence sources say that there is also a class cleavage in the LTTE which had been hidden in the past because of the over-arching presence of Prabhakaran.

Prabhakaran had preferred loyal persons to educated and sophisticated persons who might not be unquestioningly loyal. For example, Prabhakaran preferred Tamilchelvan to Balasingham, and Nadesan to Yogi. He kept the ideologue V Balakumaran always in the background.

But with the exit of Prabhakaran, persons like V Rudrakumaran in the US see a chance for themselves if the organisations were to become democratic and acceptable to the west.

Hemantha – “UK Times story / One should not ignore these "UK Times” allegations. The rest of the Western media is now parroting the same”

This is standard practice for eelamist and their media friends.
1) Times run a story quoting UN.
2) BBC, Telegraph, AFP etc repeat it quoting the Times.
3) The UN denies the story is based on its figures.
4) The story goes on for a few days with the media quoting each other.

It could reach Stage 5 also.
In this case it would be the UN quoting a BBC story of 20K killed in Sri Lanka!
Prof. Rajiva Wijesinha wrote an interesting article about a month ago covering this topic.

Links to UN statements denying these figures:
Guardian Link 1.
Officially, the UN spokesman in Colombo, Gordon Weiss, would say only that "we have always said many thousands of people died during the conflict". But privately, UN staff admitted they were puzzled by the methodology used to achieve the new death toll.
"Someone has made an imaginative leap and that is at odds with what we have been saying before," one official said. "It is a very dangerous thing to do to start making extrapolations."
.
Guardian Link 2Asked about a report in the Times claiming 20,000 civilians may have been killed in the final throes of the campaign, Holmes denied it was based on UN figures. "The truth is we simply don't know. It doesn't reflect any estimate we made for ourselves. We did have our own internal estimate until the end of April. After that, we didn't have anyone on the ground," the British diplomat said.
The UN estimated death toll to the end of April was 7,000, officials have said. The Times estimate was based on the assumption that a further 1,000 civilians had been killed on average each day until 19 May, when the Tamil Tiger leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, was killed.
.
I think we should not ignore these stories because:
a) They are an insult to our armed services.
b) With ICC World Twenty20 starting next week, we’ll see more stories like this.
.
The professor should take the next London bound flight.
