Sit Rep 31 Oct 2009

A cautionary note on the present situation re Gen Fonseka. Our task was to allow things to settle down on their own which has worked. However, recent developments led particularly by a section of the diaspora Sinhalese is a cause of concern for DefenceWire.

DefenceWire team's stance up to now has been to avoid commenting on this dispute knowing fully well the capacity of both the present government and SF to come to a compromise on:

1. The direction the Sri Lankan Military will take
2. The direction General Fonseka would have to go

These may not be the most ideal directions for either, yet they are ones that are at best described as realistic and unavoidable.

There are many moves by politically motivated Sri Lankans, including Sinhala groups and also non Sinhala Sri Lankan groups to exploit a disagreement that has unnecessarily spilled over into the public's eye due to politics in the military and a very small section of the military in politics.

These groups, particularly those civilians involved who are not insiders or have little inside information can or will not understand the discipline of a professional soldier to take what he wants and to relinquish duty when required sans insubordination.

A professional soldier is not Dutugemunu. The Sri Lanka Army/Military is a modern Army/Military positioned within a democratic society. The professional soldiers serving in it will know when to let go. By asking them to perform a larger role based solely on selfish motives of individuals in the periphery, they may destroy that soldier and even themselves and their reputation.

The Sri Lankan Military and its leaders are now hailed the world over for their victorious feat. Their role in bringing peace to the country through military means will be remembered for decades to come as the ultimate example of a trained military executing its sacred task flawlessly from start to finish. But remember this, dear readers, military action is a means of achieving the end and the end is always political.

DefenceWire, as an impartial site whose work you have witnessed for over 3 years now wish to appeal to our readers to refrain from joining or supporting either 'camps' and to allow the professional soldier and professional politicians to resolve potentially resolvable issues mentioned above.

Thank you

Keshara & Moshe,

Agree bros. It is a pitty the hole SF dug for him-self - not by resighning but by writing that stupid resignation letter. He should have known better.

Even to a child, it is not a resignaton letter by a professional. SF has enough shit on it so all can smell. Normally, resignation letter of a profesional does not devulge details - rather use words like -"unavoidable circumstances, personal reasons etc.", as you guys know. That was a fucking policy statement. Reading that I deflated like a bloody over used prick.

Let me tell you, SF better know his game if he ever gets in to politics mate. Sri Lankan politics is a special brand - not text book type - you know what I mean. One has to have a tight ass which hardened by getting screwed over many years. Well MR has one of the tightest in the business.

http://www.tehelka.com/story_main43.asp?filename=Ne281109beware_of.asp

The article by this Indian writer shows India's paranoia about Gen Fonseka coming to the top.

The Tehelka website is well known for their investigating reporting, and during the BJP regime in India that government tried to shut it down (they video taped some senior government officials who were attempting to take bribes)

The article is full of falsehoods and innuendo, which are being promoted as gospel by the Indian side about Fonseka's financial dealings and attempts to take over the country using tanks at an army celebration.

Following Sujeewa's economic hitman theory, it clear that India is backing President Rajapakse and the US is backing Gen SF.

What is not clear is what both these countries have done behind the scenes to bring about this paranoid situationon the part of our leaders. I am talking about planting conspiracy stories about each party and their intended actions through their agents, etc.
I think some of the government paranoia may have been the result of these false stories planted by vested foreign entities.

One example from the past is what the RAW did to the LTTE after the IPKF left Sri Lanka. They planted a number of stories about Mahattya Mahendrarajah's connections to the RAW and India. Prabhakaran got so paranoid that he ended up executing his childhood friend and over 300 of Mahattaya's supporters. This was a good thing for Sri Lanka too since it hastened the LTTE's eventual demise.

RAW seems to have developed close relationships with many government and opposition personalities. Indian newspapers reported last year about a government minister who rented his house to the RAW station chief in Colombo and who got his daughter into a top medical school in India on a full scholarship. I believe RW also has a close relationship with RAW. His change of attitude to the SW candidacy seems to have come about after his trip to India. He does not have any possibility of getting elected on his own but he has put forward conditions that make the SF candidacy untenable (who wants to abolish the post that they are running for ?)

OK, guys & gals,

Take a 10sec TIMEOUT from politics to enjoy a JOKE:
.......

A big city lawyer went duck hunting in rural North Cowra . He shot and dropped a bird, but it fell int o a farmer's field on the other side of a fence.

As the lawyer climbed over the fence, an elderly farmer drove up on his tractor and asked him what he was doing. The litigator responded, "I shot a duck and it fell in this field, and now I'm going to retrieve it."

The old farmer Peter replied, "This is my property, and you are not coming over here."

The indignant lawyer said, "I am one of the best trial lawyers in Australia and, if you don't let me get that duck, I'll sue you and take everything you own."

The old farmer smiled and said, "Apparently, you don't know how we settle disputes in North Cowra . We settle small disagreements like this with the 'Three Kick Rule.'

The lawyer asked, "What is the 'Three Kick Rule'?"

The Farmer replied, "Well, because the dispute occurs on my land, I get to go first. I kick you three times and then you kick me three times and so on back and forth until someone gives up."

The lawyer quickly thought about the proposed contest and decided that he could easily take the old codger. He agreed to abide by the local custom.

The old farmer slowly climbed down from the tractor and walked up to the attorney. His first kick planted the toe of his heavy steel-toed work boot into the lawyer's groin and dropped him to his knees!
His second kick to the midriff sent the lawyer's last meal gushing from his mouth. The lawyer was on all fours when the farmer's third kick to his rear end, sent him face-first into a fresh cow pie.

Summoning every bit of his will and remaining strength the lawyer very slowly managed to get to his feet. Wiping his face with the arm of his jacket, he said, "Okay, you old fart. Now it's my turn."

(I love this part)

The old farmer smiled and said, "Nah, I give up. You can have the duck."

While many discerning are questioning his letter of resignation addressed to the President, seeking retirement from the Sri Lanka Army, marked confidential with an annexure which was also marked confidential abeit quite amusingly splashed on the front pages of most local newspapers the question is also being asked whether the General really understands what he meant by the word ‘confidential’. suggesting a new look bungler despite his big stints as Lieut General where aspirations to lead the nation of Sri Lanka verily needs no bungling.
If Retd.General Sarath Fonseka has any sense of decorum and perhaps even self preservation should side step this coerced push by all the decrepit opposition politicos egging him on particularly the spineless leader of the opposition Ranil Wickremasinghe who becomes very visible as the cat baiter using the paws of an unsuspecting cat to pull out his roasted Kos Etay from the fire while also having the nerve to lay pre conditions before his Presidential Candidature demanding his appointment as executive prime minister from someone who has not even been elected to the highest office he is seeking as yet!!

Canadian LTTE supporters demonizing Prof. Rohan Gunaratna

>Lawyers for Sri Lankan migrants grill terrorism expert

Wendy Stueck

Vancouver — Globe and Mail Update

Last updated on Friday, Nov. 20, 2009 1:26AM EST

Lawyers for Sri Lankan migrants whose ship landed on the West Coast last month grilled Singapore-based terrorism expert Rohan Gunaratna Thursday on his claims about the men, questioning his sources, connections to the Sri Lankan government and the reliability of the information that he publishes on a terrorism database.

“The issue is the unverifiable nature of the sources you use when you refer to ‘closed' or intelligence sources,” Lorne Waldman, a lawyer who represents several of the detainees, said at the Immigration and Refugee Board hearing at which Prof. Gunaratna answered questions via speakerphone from Singapore.

In response, Prof. Gunaratna said it is sometimes inappropriate or impossible to identify information as it would put their lives at risk. “We are not dealing with angels, we are dealing with terrorist organizations and I have to protect my sources,” Prof. Gunaratna said.

Barbara Jackman, another lawyer representing some of the detainees, questioned Prof. Gunaratna about the funding and relationships of his think tank, suggesting it could be characterized as a right-wing pro government body.

Prof. Gunaratna responded that he is independent of government and has often criticized them.

The cross-examination, which started after a couple of hours of legal wrangling before the IRB adjudicator comes as all but one of the 76 migrants remain in custody in British Columbia.

Prof. Gunaratna has been the chief adviser to federal investigators who are assessing the men and their backgrounds. Their names are under a publication ban. The professor's views on the men are included in a report submitted in a 109-page document to the IRB, which is holding detention hearings for the men.

In an interview with The Globe and Mail earlier this, Prof. Gunaratna said one of the men on board the ship was a key player in a Tamil Tiger network that shipped weapons from North Korea to Sri Lanka. He also maintained that many of the migrants are Tigers –not refugees – who are coming to Canada to regroup.

>Sri Lanka minorities hold talks in Switzerland

Some Tamils are demanding their relatives are released
Political parties representing minority Tamils and Muslims in Sri Lanka are holding talks in Switzerland, the first since the conflict ended in May.

Sri Lanka's social welfare minister said they aim to find a shared position on issues affecting minorities.

The meeting, organised by the Tamil diaspora, gathers representatives from across the political spectrum.

Although there is no formal agenda, issues about the return of internally displaced people will be discussed.

Social Welfare Minister Douglas Devananda, who heads the Eelam People's Democratic Party, told the BBC that the aim of the meeting was to reach "common ground" on issues affecting minorities in the island nation to negotiate with the government.

He said that each party would bring its own issues to the table but these were expected to include the devolution of power to provinces and the granting of amnesty to political detainees and former militants who surrendered during the conflict.

>Second Airport construction begins

Dharma SRI ABEYRATNE and Ishara MUDUGAMUWA

The construction work on the second international airport will commence on November 27 at Mattala, Hambantota.

Ports and Aviation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa said the new airport will be constructed on a 2,000 hectare bare land in Hambantota district at a cost of US $ 200 million.

The Government of the People’s Republic of China will financially assist the project providing a soft loan facility. The construction comes under two phases. At the first phase all basic facilities and requirements will be completed including runaway, taxiways and parking facilities.

At the first phase, initial construction would cover an extent of 800 hectares of land. At the second phase all other work, airport and aviation related facilities will be established such as servicing and repairing centre for aircraft, hotels, pilot training centre, maintenance hub, private jet parking, technical training centres and many more facilities will be completed.

The second phase will cover 1,200 hectares.

The construction will be carried out so as to meet the international standards such as ICAO specifications for Code 4F. The runway is 3,500 metres in length and 75 metres in width.

The construction of the first stage has been scheduled to be completed by the end of 2011 when the airport will be commissioned. As scheduled the first flight will land by December 2011. The runaway is large enough to operate any jumbo size aircraft such as the A380 airbus the largest aircraft ever built.

“The Bandaranaike International Airport commenced operations four decades ago. The country is facing much difficulties as there isn’t another international airport.

Normally international airlines ask the country whether another international airport is available which can be used as an alternative before they begin operations. We can overcome that barrier and many international airlines will start operations to Sri Lanka,” Airport and Aviation Services Limited Chairman Prasanna J. Wickramasuriya said.

The airport will be constructed as an ‘eco-friendly airport’ minimising damage to the environment. Mattala the place where the airport is built can be accessed easily from any place of the country via three main routes.

The airport will play a vital and supportive role in the development of the entire country while promoting the air-sea transshipment hub operation in conjunction with the Hambantota harbour, the Minister Rajapaksa added.

Retired top General meets US Ambassador to Sri Lanka - reports

Sat, Nov 21, 2009
ColomboPage

Nov 21, Colombo: Retired Chief of Defense Staff General Sarath Fonseka yesterday met with the United States Ambassador to Sri Lanka Patricia Butenis in Colombo, local media reports said.

However, the goal of this special meeting was not known to the media yet and the US Embassy in Colombo neither has confirmed it nor denied it.

According to the unconfirmed reports the General has discussed several issues related to his future steps including his security with Ms. Butenis.

During a visit to the US earlier this month General Fonseka was approached by the US Department of Homeland Security reportedly in an attempt to obtain evidence against Sri Lankan Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa over the alleged human right violations committed during the last stages of the war between the government forces and the LTTE.

Fonseka, who himself is being accused of war crimes by human right organizations has accused President Rajapaksa's government of human right violations and pledged to fight for democracy and human rights.

When you deal with a terrorist you have to think outside the conventional conflict rules.

When you deal with a politician you have to deal outside of the political box. There is more than one way of skinning a cat, especially if you want to keep the cat on top but honest!

As has been said before, the war against the terrorists was easy; the real War, the War against corruption starts now.

It is quite sad and ironical that those who despised General Fonseka are bogusly supporting him so that they can come to power from the back door. I honestly mean when I say that the scum of Sri Lanka shall be sent to garbage bins of Sri Lankan history. I agree with you about corruption and the need to address it. However, I would like to give President Rajapakse another term to ensure stability of the nation. It is more of a vote against than a vote for.

"Fonseka rejects UNF conditions
General Sarath Fonseka has rejected the conditions laid down by the opposition United National Front for him to be their common presidential candidate, political sources revealed.
He had made it clear that he cannot agree to the condition to abolish the Executive Presidency in 180 days and give up the presidential immunity in 30 days on being elected as the President. Fonseka had conveyed his stand to SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem and Democratic People’s Front leader Mano Ganeshan when they visited the General last week, the sources said.
According to SLMC sources, Fonseka had said that there is no point in contesting the presidency if he is to resign after six months and that like the other political parties in the alliance he too has his own policies. Therefore he has suggested that all three groups – the UNF, the JVP and he should sit and prepare a new set of policies for the presidential election.

The JVP parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake last week told a media conference that the opposition would be fielding a common candidate in case the presidential election is held first and such a candidate should be someone acceptable to all parties and they hope to discuss the matter with the UNP. Meanwhile, at the UNP Working Committee meeting held last Thursday, the UNP rebel Johnston Fernando had questioned the party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as to whether Fonseka would be the common opposition candidate. Wickremesinghe had replied that such a decision has not yet been taken.

In the current scenario there is a strong possibility for the presidential election to be a three cornered battle among President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Ranil Wickremesinghe and the General Fonseka. At the time of going to press, Gen. Fonseka was not available for comment."

TamilSavior,

Even though there is little or no chance that I would vote for General Fonseka, I see that the untold intention of the Dandulena story is to make the playing field more level in certain aspects. If this story is indeed true, I should say that this kind of deals happen every day everywhere. We got to be fooling ourselves if we think that there are totally uncorrupted parties. The difference this time is that LTTE and Eelamoids are finished. The main obstacle that stood our way to an uncorrupted system, LTTE and Eelamoids, are not here any more. Therefore, we stand a better chance in becoming a country with an uncorrupted system now. Realistically, it will take a few more decades before we get out of the present system.

"I see that the untold intention of the Dandulena story is to make the playing field more level in certain aspects"

That in my view, in any case, may not be a bad thing.

After all, when the ex-General has already started preaching "restoring democracy" "restoring media freedom" "restoring minority rights" etc. (basically the same worn out crap that Rani Ponna and Mangali Ponna and SomaWesa Ponna utter), I think it is also time to show what such a preacher might have been up to!

People in glass houses must not throw bullets ($0.02) and shells ($20) carelessly methinks!

You are absolutely right.

This is a damn sad event in our history. True we wiped out the LTTE scum, but why did our great victory have to turn out this way in the end?

But be that as it may, if this Dandulena pocketed $$$Millions while his FIL was the Army Commander in charge of procurement committee and all processes thereof, then I think the most deserving prosecution must be applied - Hero or not - to both the FIL and SIL methinks.

Sure there are other corrupt kaakas I am sure and their day too will come sooner (if they are anti-MR) or later (if they are pro-MR, when a regime change has occurred). In my view, both types deserve what's in store for them.

Corruption wrt state funds is a dastardly crime in my view.

MR is not a lesser hero. He fought against the entire western world fueled by the LTTE international mechanism. He stood like a stone wall against the US, British, EU & UN powers mustering all necessary support from unusual allies like Russia, China & India. He fed the country as well while providing all the state of the art military hardware and the man power for the armed forces to fight the war. More over he allowed the armed forces a free hand to fight taking a great political risk for him. If some thing went wrong the Generals would have gone home and MR to the Gilletin. Nobody else will fight to share that with him.
We had Generals par excellence in our army who could have made the LTTE mince meat while it was a cub.. But they were stabbed in the back by the political hierarchy before they finish the job fearing the same drama now being staged. Still they being the absolute officers and gentlemen.
But MR was such a great leader he allowed this controversial character to fight the war knowing very well that no other President would have given him that opportunity knowing his ambitions. Chandrika gave former commander 3 years extension at once simply to keep him away. He was supposed to simply retire an go to US to run a 7/11 convenience store when this great man came to power and made him commander. He is now biting the hand that fed him.
He ran the army like an absolute dictator while there were powers above him. These morons are trying to give him absolute power and expect him to uphold the democratic values.
First he will avenge all and sundry who claims parallel credit with him for war victory. Then he will eat JVP raw for breakfast and bury Ranil & Mongal alive. (they are so rotten even a crazy lion can’t eat them) Tamils and Muslims don't worry you hahe Indian ocean right round SL.
No body else will allowed to live except his ball polishers and mistresses in the women’s corp. Wait for the modern day Pol Pot.

But they were stabbed in the back by the political hierarchy before they finish the job"

True.

What the ex-General conveniently forgets is that he was very fortunate in this regard (to have MR/GR support him fully, all the way).

The amount of MBT, MBRL, Artys, APC, AFV, BMP, etc. etc. and the HUGE inrease in troops that the MR GOSL gave this man - just for the asking, with no quibbling - was what no other army commander had ever got from the political leadership.

Given this HUGE men/material grant he consistently got, some have even asked the question could this man really have screwed up the job and brought us failure?

Not sure I have the answer for that, but it is food for thought nevertheless I think.

Sam Perera said...

Expert Inspector,

As many patriots often says, nobody can claim full credit for destroying LTTE and Eelamoids. The people of Sri Lanka elected Mahinda Rajapakse to do a job and he selected right people for the task and provided necessary wherewithal for the task. Not only that he stood against unsavory white masters. In a democracy, the credit goes to the ultimate masters, i.e. the people of Sri Lanka. While I do not think that he is uncorrupted, I still like him to be elected for another term to finish off the job we gave him. At the same time, I like him to preserve those golden pages we wrote together in Mahawamsa.

Tamil Savior said...

To give the country now to Rani Ponna+TNA(LTTE) would be to roll back all the achievements WE (yes, sam, WE the people of SL achieved them by electing this GOSL in 2005) we have gained.

Danuna Thilakaratne started a new Salon in Kirulapana, Sri Lanka besides a Salon at Las Vegas, USA, Night Club at Holiday Inn, Sri Lanka, Beach Hotel in Negambo Sri Lanka, Communication Company in London, and Salon in Galle Face Hotel. He invested millions of dollars in the American and Sri Lankan stock markets. Where did he get this money? Gen Fonseka should be asked for a reply.

The Former Army Commander got President Fund scholarship for his daughter to study in the USA though the scholarship is meant for poor students. He used to get his son-in-law’s economy class air ticket upgraded to the first class on the National Carrier Sri Lankan Airlines. This upgrading was not limited to his son-in-law alone. The General’s entire family and their friends got upgrades for more than 50 times when Sarath Fonseka was the Army Commander.

The General’s official vehicle with commando guards in tow was used by the son-in-law for his personal purpose and for his business visits.
Danuna’s company in Oklahoma shows Ruwinda Gunaratne is a director with effect from Nov 16.

Ruwinda is the son of Vice Air Marshal Channa Gunaratne, Director Planning in the Sri Lankan Air Force.

Ruwinda used to live with Danuna. That was long time back. On Nov 16, he was not in the US as he had returned home by then, according to Asian Tribune’s investigation.

Yet, Danuna, on 16th November went to the State Secretary’s Office and changed the name of the company to Ruwinda Gunaratne’s name.

How could he do this? By simply forging the documents! Danuna forged the signatures of Ruwinda and got the company changed to his name. But Ruwinda was not aware of these changes. Danuna also put some other Sri Lankans’ addresses without the knowledge of those Sri Lankans.

Danuna Thilakaratne does not have an Alien Residency in US (Green Card), but he does have a H1B visa. (If you are a Foreign national who wants to live and Work in the USA, you need to get HIB Visa)

He had filed that H1B visa through a company which does not even exist in the US.

What Danuna did for the tax? It is suspected that he forged documents and on that basis submitted his tax returns.
Danuna stayed in his home in Oklahoma (his wife stays there) and made phone calls to all the generals. There is a gang in this field – a brigadier identified as Fydel Meedin, Colonel Col Rohan Wijesundara and many others.

Particulars about the company –its paid up capital, nature of business etc are available on the internet at www.sooneraccess.state.ok.us/corp_inquiry/corp_inquiry-find.asp

After this company information surfaced on the internet, Danuna Thillakeratne went to the State Secretary Office in Oklahoma at 4.59PM November 16th/ (or through one his agents, it is unclear he managed it) and forged the signature of Ruwinda Gunaratne and changed the name of registered agent by signing as a president for the company and forging Ruwinda Gunaratne’s signature and address as (Ruwinda was in Sri Lanka when he changed the agents name and address) –

Danuna forged the signature. He should go to jail for this. He also changed the address to 1925 Bradford Way.

General SF May Be Extremely Dangerous For All Sri Lankans

It is pleasing to see the analyses of the Sri Lankan current crisis by people like Moses, Sam, Sujeewa and many others

If anyone thinks that the General SF is politically naive, think again. The general changed the military paradigm of big attack to small attack and achieved success. One who is a master in military game cannot be acting naively and stepping into a trap set by his previous enemies. He has a plan of his own and he is not a fawn of anybody. He may not become a good democrat but he will able to see ulterior motives of the others.

During the war he was audacious enough to disobey his commander in chief.
He seemed to have jumped in front of the President to announce the death of VP. Who is he to do this? In his place as the General he deserves our gratitude and respect in the military role. Who gave him the political role? Now he writes a political appeal to the soldiers? How audacious is he? Future is extremely bleak if he comes to power.

If he has any dignified agenda how can he join with all those vultures of people? What is the reason that for organisations to serenade him? Why is he appeared to be entertaining the USA and why the USA appears to be entertaining him?

Is SF the real conspiracy? or Is Ranill is the real conspiracy inside the SF conspiracy? This is not clear yet but what is clear that the General is not acting in madness. There is a method to his madness. Whether it works or not? (is the question.)

The President deserves our eternal gratitude and but not our eternal vote yet he deserves another term. If he had tried to cure all the ills of Sri Lankan politics and society LTTE would have been thrilled. He had to be selective. He had to put up with the General's tantrums for the sake of the war effort. Most of his (president's) shortcomings are inherited from JR' constitution. It has given the bargain might to who tread on minorities. (I stand for equal rights to all groups- but the JR's constitution gives more power to people who cannot think of in terms of one Nation.). In life we do not have perfects. We have to take what is given. Among the givens the President is the best take by far.

The General could bring a bloody era to Sri Lanka. Why take chances?

History will curse the President if he fails his mission. Let us vote for him and curse him later. That would be much more congenial than what could happen under SF.

I am still not patriotic but my emotional attachment to Sri Lanka cannot be taken away from me as my love for my Mother cannot be taken away. As I take the other side even when my mother is wrong I cannot uncritically take the side of Sri Lanka. LTTE had to be defeated. I believe that it was done in a most reasonable way possible. I do not know the real details, but what I am sure is that many soldiers sacrificed limbs and lives to save Sri Lankan Nation and innocent Tamils. What is being done by UNP and other forces in Sri Lanka is a disgrace for all the blood spilled by our poor village boys. What a shame?

Thanks!

Wet Dreams of a Sri Lankan Politician?

Is Ranil brewing a poisonous election soup, using Sarath Fonseka as the uncommon "Common Candidate" to win and abolish the Executive Presidency, so Ranil can emerge as the Executive Prime Minister?

What a devious Rube Goldberg device-like plan!

Does he not know that the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray? Lol!

........

Ranil’s ‘I-factor’ has many faces

I remember reading a preface by Art Buchwald to a collection of his columns titled ‘I am not a crook’, where the Pulitzer Prize winning columnist thanked Richard Nixon for giving him more than enough material for his satirical column. In 2006, a few months before he died of kidney failure, he told Jeffrey Brown (in an interview) ‘I worshipped the very quicksand he (Nixon) walks on!’

There are some politicians whose antics and pronouncements make satirists salivate Like Nixon. Since Nixon, the USA had Dan Quayle, Vice President to George Bush (snr), whose penchant for getting things mixed up prompted a column titled ‘Quayle Droppings’. President George W. Bush was by far the most humour-inspiring President the USA has seen in remembered history. Barack Obama is not funny but when he accepted the Nobel Prize for Peace he was mercilessly lampooned.

All politicians slip and the alert satirist, especially the cartoonist, can be relied on to be unforgiving and brutal in response.

Yoonus and Wijesoma, and among the delicate dissectors with word and line, Dasa Hapuwalana have drawn and quartered many a careless politician over the years. The good thing is that they never run out of material.

There’s a lot of political quicksand around and one is guaranteed of a map-less politician blinded by arrogance straying to these areas. Some know to keep their mouths shut. Other just can’t help stuffing their feet in.

I spent a couple of hours trying to figure out if there was anyone who could be counted on to come up with gaffes at a rate more frequent than that which Ranil Wickremesinghe is capable of. Failed.

Ranil always comes up with hilarious stuff. We saw it during the 2004 General Election and in the 2005 Presidential Election as well.

He didn’t slip in his slipping during the provincial council elections either. Bad examples, errors, stumbling, jumbling: that’s Ranil Wickremesinghe on the campaign trail.

Listening to him over the years, I have come to the conclusion that the man is quite lucid when he speaks his mind; when he talks about what he knows in the language of the particular subject, Ranil Wickremesinghe is eminently a ‘listenable’ creature. I think it is when his entourage of aides suggests a wise crack that he fumbles. And when he fumbles, he really goes to the extreme.

Lately, however, I’ve come to think that Ranil Wickremesinghe is out of depth even in the subjects one would expect him to be conversant with.

Wet Dreams of a Sri Lankan Politician?

....continued...

About a week ago, he announced that in the event that Sarath Fonseka contests and wins the Presidential Election, he (Ranil) expects the newly-elected President to scrap the Executive Presidency and thereafter make him (Ranil) the Executive Prime Minister. Now why should anyone, having fought hard to become Executive President want to divest him/herself of power? And, even if he/she wanted to do so and managed to find a way to do this with JR’s Constitution, why should he/she hand over power to a man who didn’t have the guts to contest in the first place? And even if he/she wanted to switch the system around so that executive power would reside in the office of the Prime Minister, why should he/she not want to occupy the PM’s seat?

But our ‘brilliant man’ Ranil believes that in the fairytale world he lives in things will happen according to the script he has written. He is now wishing for a caretaker Prime Minister post for himself, should some common candidate he supports become President.

His latest trick is the most hilarious. He has a 25-year policy plan for the country. Great. It is good to plan. There’s a lot of rhetoric of course about cleaning the political system. To be expected from any politician of whatever persuasion. The key difference is this: setting up of an Executive Prime Minister. Fantastic.

After making a lot of noise about his desire/hope to become PM, the man talks about conferring executive powers to the post! He’s basically telling the Common Candidate (whoever that may be), ‘You contest and win, then roll over and die, so I can walk over your dead body and collect the executive prize!’

One must be utterly dumb not to see what Ranil Wickremesinghe is saying here. He doesn’t care about a ‘common candidate’. When he hears the words ‘common candidate’ he is thinking/hoping ‘sucker!’

There’s more. The man wants all elections held simultaneously; that is, the parliamentary, provincial council, local government and the brand new (executive) prime ministerial elections held together. Imagine the plight of the voter. He/she has to pick three candidates from the list for the Pradeshiya Sabha, three for the Provincial Council, three for the Parliament as well as one or more for the PM’s election. That’s at least 10 names to remember!

And imagine the plight of the Elections Commissioner and election officials; the numbers needed both to hold the election and to count the results. Perhaps Ranil is thinking of outsourcing elections to some foreign country/agency; that’s a possibility.

Consider all this and we can come to one of two conclusions: the man’s just lost it, or, it’s nothing more than calculated bull-shitting orchestrated to quietly position himself as the candidate of the opposition. I would say, all things considered, he’s got it all set. Any other CC (Common Candidate) pretenders must realize two things by now: a) Ranil Wickremesinghe wants to be the EXECUTIVE (President or Prime Minister) and b) since only a politically naive moron could agree to this, a CC can only expect lukewarm support from the man. It all points to Ranil Wickremesinghe entering the fray.

Let us remember one thing. The man has talked about a lot of things, but Ranil Wickremesinghe has not ruled himself out of contention as a candidate. Says a lot doesn’t it?

I only wish Sri Lanka had an Art Buchwald, but I believe Dasa Hapuwalana and others do an excellent job.

Thanks Deshapaluwa:

My pleasure.

If we vote for MR that is not because we are loyal to him but because we are loyal to Sri lanka(its people).

Whether it is MR or GR or SF, corruption is corruption. Whoever it is they should pay the price but what if we take corruption as the priority a year back. LTTE would be still here.

LTTE was one of the major factor (with JR's constitution) for courruption. One has gone. Let us kick the other too.

In the next term. MR has the choice to betray the people or serve the people.

Thanks!

When Gen. Fonseka was allotted an extent of 10 perches at Kirimandala Mawatha, Narahenpita, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had used his good offices to increase it to 25 perches. At first, the move had caused difficulties since the Cabinet had approved ten perches each for the Commanders of the Army, Navy and Air Force. It was pointed out that no exception could be made only to Gen. Fonseka.
Thereafter, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had argued that ten perches was not enough for Gen. Fonseka since he had two daughters. He had lobbied for an increase. As a result, a new Cabinet paper proposing 25 perches each to all three Commanders was approved by ministers. The land is said to be worth over Rs 100 million.

Fonseka Booted (Exclusive Interview) Posted by admin on Nov 22nd, 2009 By Frederica Jansz

Speaking exclusively to The Sunday Leader General Sarath Fonseka bitterly recounted his ordeal last week. Having been ordered to vacate ‘Generals’ House’ by today, November 22, Fonseka was given a mere week to find alternative housing.

“Contrary to all previous false reports I allowed my predecessors both General Shantha Kottegoda and Donald Perera to continue in this house for three and a half months after they had retired from service” Fonseka said, asserting “Yet, I — as Chief of Defence Staff am being treated like dirt — given a mere week to get out.”

“I don’t in any case want to stay in this place, I am very keen to go,” the General said, adding, “If I choose to go to court on this matter they will lose.” Asked if indeed he might seek legal action against the Ministry of Defence and its Secretary who General Fonseka said is responsible for his current housing predicament he replied, “I might.”

The General has been house-hunting, he said, the whole of last week. “We did find a few houses that were suitable and the owners were initially more than willing to rent to us — but when we went back they refused to rent to me. They had been pressured by them,” Fonseka charged. Asked who “them” was he said, “The Defence Ministry and its Secretary.”

He said he is seeking a house “close to Royal College” as “we plan on setting up our political office also in that area.”

The General, elaborating further went on to say how he was leaving the army after a service period spanning 40 years with mixed feelings. “I am both disgusted at the way they have treated me and extremely disillusioned.” However, on a lighter note the General said, “I was driving around in civilian clothes last week and it felt good.”

But Fonseka maintains his life is at grave risk. “They initially reduced my security to 25. I protested. They then increased it to 60 infantrymen. Again I protested and now they have assigned me a mere 12 commandos — not men that I handpicked. They are all new men. They could be an assassination squad — maybe they are trying to assassinate me.”

Replying a question if the threat to his life is only from the LTTE General Fonseka said, “No. There are the criminals who do politics who can and will also try to kill me.”

Speaking further the General said, “I appealed to the President to take into consideration the very grave and serious threat to my life. The Army’s No. 2 has more security than I today. But the President’s response was, “You are now a civilian.”

“Am I more of a civilian than himself or Gotabaya Rajapaksa the Defence Secretary?” Fonseka asked, his voice filled with emotion.

Fonseka, who resigned as Chief of Defence Staff on November 12 was also in for a further shock when his official cooks were immediately withdrawn hours after his resignation was accepted by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Referring to an ugly incident that took place last week involving the Senehasa School spearheaded for children of the military with special needs by himself and his wife Anoma, the General recounted how barely 24 hours before the official opening of the school the event was abruptly cancelled. “All because our names are on a plaque — now they will put their names on that plaque and take credit for a Rs.150 million project that my wife Anoma and I devoted ourselves to accomplishing,” he said.

Meanwhile in a four page long letter addressed to troops on Friday, the former Army Commander said, “I was ordered from the ‘top’ to immediately vacate the official residence. I have faced many obstacles in trying to find an alternative place to reside, as some are hell bent on throwing me out on to the streets.”

“My security has been reduced to 25 despite repeated requests made to increase it up to 100 soldiers, considering the threats posed to my life,” he said in his letter to the troops.
While pledging to be by their side ‘like a shadow,’ Fonseka told his soldiers that he will fight to instill the country’s diminishing democracy, human rights and media freedom.
“Don’t allow anybody to tarnish the reputation of the army and politicise the military. We should keep in mind that we are the real owners of the war victory even though certain people try to insult us,” the former Army Commander said.

Gen Fonseka faces Ranil’s PM rider

P K Balachandran

COLOMBO: The unease in the Sri Lankan Opposition in naming General Sarath Fonseka as their joint candidate for the Presidential elections against President Mahinda Rajapaksa, continued with UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe laying down a fresh set of tough conditions before the retired general.

The UNP boss told the media that Fonseka must agree to abolish or drastically prune the powers of the Executive President; appoint him (Wickremesinghe) as the prime minister; give important Cabinet portfolios to the then pro-LTTE Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the Marxist-Sinhalese nationalist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP); and implement the 17th Amendment of the Constitution, which de-politicises important public appointments by taking them away from the purview of the President.

Political circles wonder how Fonseka would be able to suddenly appoint Wickremesinghe as the prime minister without the United National Front, an electoral alliance which he heads, being the majority group in Parliament, and how it could become a majority group without going through parliamentary election first.

Second, if the TNA is to be included in the Cabinet, what kind of promises will Fonseka have to make to the Tamils? The Tamils, both moderates and extremists, want freedom of movement, and devolution of power. Fonseka has made it clear in his resignation letter to the President that he is against resettling Tamil refugees in their native villages without adequate security forces deployment to check LTTE infiltration. In previous interviews, he has said that devolution is not the answer to Sri Lanka’s ethnic question and the island belongs to the Sinhalese Buddhists.

Third, assuming that Fonseka gives in to the Tamils or the TNA, how will he satisfy the JVP, which is opposed to all the Tamil demands? How can the TNA and JVP co-exist in Fonseka’s cabinet?

Fourthly, as regards the demand for the implementation of the 17th Amendment, no President has implemented it from Chandrika Kumaratunga’s time because it severely abridges the powers of the Executive President. How does the UNP expect a tough as nails General like Fonseka, who is used to exercising unquestioned authority in the army, to clip his own wings so drastically?

From ST about booting SF

Retiring Army Commanders are entitled to remain in the official residence for three months. However, they are required to make a written request. Gen. (retd.) Fonseka had not done so.

According to sources at the Presidential Secretariat, Gen. Fonseka had complained to President Rajapaksa that he had been given only 48 hours to switch positions from Army Commander to Chief of Defence Staff. The President had responded by pointing out that then Commander of the Army, Lt. Gen. Shantha Kottegoda had been only given two hours to quit his post to pave the way for Gen. Fonseka. "He asked me a week's time so he could remain at General's House (the official residence) for the wedding of his daughter. Don't forget you were opposed to it and therefore he had to go," said Rajapaksa.

දේශපාලුවා said...

President Rajapaksa had ensured that a team of commandos were flown to Oklahoma, the USA to provide protection to General Fonseka's two daughters and son-in-law. Soon after the abortive guerrilla suicide bomb attack on Gen. Fonseka in April 2006, US$ 1,500 (about Rs 171,000 at today's exchange rate) had been remitted every month from the President's Fund for the benefit of his daughters.
In this backdrop, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was called in this week to investigate some defence deals done by a close member of Gen. (retd.) Fonseka's family. Allegations centre on several transactions involving a variety of items including one in which a profit of two US cents (or over Rs 2.28) had been made on every bullet and US$ 20 (about Rs 2,280) per shell by a company operated by this close relative. Millions of rounds of bullets were used both in assault rifles and other small arms in the military defeat of the guerrillas. It is also alleged that some of the funds have been remitted to the United States.

"Alert

Political circles, already being alerted, rather erroneously on several occasions since the military victory against the Tamil Tigers about a possible coup deta’t feared that their worst predictions have come true on October 15, as battle hardened troops from operational areas were brought to Colombo.
The Indian High Commissioner in Colombo and military establishment in New Delhi were alerted and troops at a South Indian base was put on alert for rapid deployment in case of a military take over in Colombo, which however, became a non event.
Back to Fonseka’s meeting with the President: the outgoing CDS then raised his security concerns. He said that he had been informed that his security would be slashed to a platoon (25 personnel) and that the government would be responsible for the lapses in his security. The President reassured that Fonseka would be provided with two platoons of soldiers and officers from the Singha Regiment, Fonseka’s parent regiment. Fonseka before his retirement was provided with a mammoth security entourage of 480 trained personnel.
Fonseka said that he needed commandos trained with VIP security. The President retorted that no officer has been provided with Commandos. Fonseka replied that Savindra Silva, Major General and Mendaka Samarasinghe also a Major General are provided with 10 and 12 commandos respectively.
“They are serving officers,” said the President. Fonseka replied, “I am the one who led them in the battle.”
The President then assured Fonseka that he would be given 12 commandos, including two officers in addition to the two platoons of Singha Regiment.
He was then told he is required to leave his residence at the army headquarters by Friday, but could stay at the General’s House in Bullers Road till he finds a suitable residence. It is a traditional gesture of goodwill to a retiring military chief. For instance, Air Chief Marshall Donald Perera, Fonseka’s predecessor in the post of CDS remained in the CDS’ residence for over three months after his retirement and Lt General Shantha Kottegodage, Fonseka’s predecessor in Army stayed in the Bullers Road residence for over four months.
But, on Thursday, General Fonseka had been told that he is required to vacate the General’s House by Sunday. To add insult to injury, he says house owners have been threatened against renting him a place. Fonseka’s men have seen 15 houses in the Colombo 7 area. When they returned to sign the agreements, house owners who previously agreed, had backtracked, citing threats made on them against renting a house to the out going military chief.
This and many other incidents explain the abyss the Sri Lankan politics has fallen to. This vicissitude of fortune of the former army chief is quite paradoxical in some respect.

Defending Fonseka

Now, Fonseka is being assailed by the same forces and the government big wigs who went an extra mile to defend him not so longer ago. Secretary Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa summoned journalists Sanath Balasuriya and Poddala Jayantha, the President and General Secretary of the Working Journalist Association after media personnel protested against Fonseka after a assault on a colleague, who was later forced into exile. The two journalists were chastened, told to give up protest and threatened with consequences if they continue with the protest. Such threats were not in vain. Poddala Jayantha was later abducted and assaulted - he cannot still walk without a walking aid. Sanath Balasuriya went into exile.
There had been an compact, quite rightly, within the defence establishment to defend its officials; however the question was that the military bigwigs were impervious to their violations of rules of engagement, though it is understood that the rules of engagement in a counter insurgency are often blurred."

"However, with Fonseka having fallen out with political powers, the same forces have set upon him. His telephone lines are tapped. So are the telephone lines of a close circle of his friends, including some scribes.
His wife, Ms Anoma Fonseka resigned from her post as the Chairman of the Ranawiru Seva Authority last week. The immediate reason for her resignation was at the eleventh hour, Defence Ministry intervened to cancel an opening ceremony of a school for the disable children of the military personnel built by her organization. The opening of the school, which was the brain child of Mrs Fonseka, has been postponed indefinitely.
Earlier, female officials in her staff were transferred after the retirement of her husband. Fonseka’s relatives in the security forces have also received ad-hoc transfers.
The military establishment is not spared by the ramifications of Fonseka’s much talked about political entry.
Last week, 47 senior military officers, including 9 officers who were formerly attached to the Joint Operational Headquarters under Fonseka’s command were transferred. While, it is not unusual for the new holder of a posting to mandate changes in his staff, the recent events go beyond the routine practice and are suggestive of a purge of the Fonseka loyalists in the higher ranks of the army.
This is in addition to the removal of the Singha Regiment, the parent regiment of Fonseka from some sensitive responsibilities. Last week, it was relieved from duties of guarding the state controlled radio, the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Cooperation (SLBC)
Earlier its contingent providing security to Defence Ministry and the Army Headquarters was replaced by Armoured Corps and Gajaba Regiment.
The bad blood appears to be run deeper.

Absentees

The commanders of army, navy and air force were notable absentees in the guard of honor offered to the outgoing chief of defence staff on Monday.
The presence of three forces commanders in the farewell of their superior officer is part of military tradition.
Director General of the Government’s Media Centre for National Security, Lakshman Hulugalla was on record as saying that there is no such tradition. He is forgiven for his ignorance for the main criteria for the plum posts in Sri Lankan context has been the political loyalty. But that explains why those chattering classes put their foot in the mouth whenever they speak on an issue which requires average intelligence.
Last week, Gen Fonseka wrote a farewell message addressed to the officers and other ranks in the army, navy, air force and civil defence forces. However, sources close to him said that the four page message sent to Signal branch for dissemination would likely to be blacked out."

Gents,

This game between the government and General SF is a game of self-destruction that will have ramifications for the future of Sri Lanka. One of the reasons the war went on for thirty years is because some of our Sinhala brethern hated their own kind more than our common enermy, and were thus unable to come togther to save our country. During the last three years we all rejoiced and thought that a new dawn had come when we witnessed a group of people coming together for the common good of the country to destroy our biggest enemy. Now that the common enemy has been removed it is sad to say that we as a country have reverted back to the status quo. There is no point bringing out anyone's skeletons at this point. It is irrelevant whether someone in the USA made money off bullets or someone made money of planes. The war has been won.

My point is that all of the principals are privy to each others secrets. Some of the secrets if aired publicly may end up putting Sri Lanka on a list of international pariah states, cause the loss of our GSP status, or may result in some of the principals being dragged before the International Criminal Court.

There is a nice passage in the new testament of the Bible about human morality and hypocracy. When a woman is about to be stoned for adultery, Jesus tells the crowd "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her."

Instead of being sanctimonious about their opponent's conduct, the principals need to focus on their own conduct and short comings, follow the five precepts and other ethical systems to become righteous and moral leaders, and work for the good of Sri Lanka.

It is reported that the government has agreed to merge the Northern and Eastern Provinces that were merged in 1987, without any referendum, merely on pressure from India and were later de-merged on a court order in 2006. In 1987 the two provinces were merged by the then UNP government stating a referendum would be held later to decide whether to have them merged or not. However, this referendum was not held. The JVP filed a case in Supreme Court in October, 2006 requesting the two provinces to be demerged. The Supreme Court decided that merging of the two provinces was unconstitutional and ordered that the two provinces to be demerged and remain as two separate provinces. Accordingly, the two provinces were demerged though India expressed its displeasure.

It is reported that India’s Minister of Finance Pranab Mukherjee who visited Sri Lanka last Sunday had an important discussion on bilateral issues with President Mahinda Rajapakse while having breakfast. Despite visiting Sri Lanka to deliver the key note address at the 4th Commemoration of former Minister of Foreign Affairs Luxman Kadirgamar, his main intention had been to pressurize the government regarding the future political path of Sri Lanka. It is also reported that a team of Tamil diaspora secretly met the highest authorities of the government last week. These reports state Indian officials as well as the Tamil diaspora have asked the government to merge the Northern and Eastern provinces and the government had agreed to their request.
As merging the North and the East would be disadvantageous to the government at the impending elections and there would be a massive mass protest, the government is planning to carry out the merging exercise in a subtle manner say these sources. Accordingly, the Northern and the Eastern Provinces would be named as a single economic zone. The government has agreed to unify the two provinces economically and administratively first and later declare them as a single political unit.
According to internal sources of the government India has unofficially promised to support Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse at a future presidential election if the government agrees to the request.

"Now that our Sinhala Patriots are engaged in a game of destroying each other"

For cheap political mileage, and to sooth his bruised (but thick) ego, a true Sinhala Patriot would not unfairly attack the GOSL that finally liquidated the LTTE scum with "media freedom" "lack of democracy" "human rights" etc. even before the war smoke has dissipated - and specially do it with confirmed traitors who insulted our own, his own, Ranavirus!

So, I think we must be more careful on how we use this term "Patriot" going forward.

Fonseka 2010,

Keep in mind that there are no perfect people. We all have some kind of a flaw. We won our Motherland with unity among patriots. The general served our nation in his best capacity. In the past, the kings have bestowed such warriors with land grants. In the cases like General, kings have granted immunity from death sentence three times for him and anybody descending from him.

I am not saying that we apply the rules today. However, it is the time for all sides to reconcile in the name of our nation's future.

DavidW said...

...Small countries like the Maldives and Bhutan have no qualms in placing themselves under an Indian security umbrella. But in bigger regional States, like Nepal and Bangladesh, a large chunk of the political establishment defines itself by opposing India. This is not the case in Sri Lanka where a political consensus has evolved that sees India as the final guarantor of the country’s unity and democracy. Thus the Rajapaksa government can publicly call India its ‘closest ally’ or ask New Delhi for help when faced with coup rumours.

Point taken.

However, what is at stake is not about this man's honor (or lack thereof as some news reports indicate) or even about SL party politics for that matter.

What is at stake here is the very survival of Sri Lanka as a independent, single sovereign nation - especially after the enormous sacrifice she made over 30 years to assure so.

The same forces - RW-UNP, TNA, LTTE, SLMC, etc - that not long ago wanted us to cave into the separatist forces - are now once again out in full force.

The difference is here they have been able to convince a "Patriot" to join their ranks as they see that is the only way to remove this regime that has refused to budge wrt separatism.

I think we need to look at the bigger picture and not get hung up on our admiration for an individual's PAST performance.

Sri Lanka's sovereignty is above everything else as far as I am concerned.

You are sadly mistake if you subscribe to this hypothesis. We consider India to be friends and our land of origin. However, we neither look at India as the final guarantor nor savior. We simply don't want any power to meddle with our internal matters.

It is pathetic low for all those who support the factions among SL heroes. Most of you cross the line and walk way past the limit. Adrenaline and hatred does not tell you that you're only wearing cowboy hats but rest of your magic is glowing like sunshine.

Me take no sides. Nor are there two defined sides yet. I have expressed my view many a times on this dirty SF affair. I'd like telling you a little bit about some other side you fail to see.

- More you defame either side, your side looses points: It is the same for both SF side and MR side. Beware that these ppl are heroes in many minds. You have chosen one for whatever reason and go bang bang on the other. Your readers do not follow you as gospel. Most illogical arguments that we see here classify for mud, not fact. Instead of your opponant getting the wrath for corruption or whatever claim, it is you and your side that gets the wrath of defamation [this excludes the designated traitor clan that howl here. In fact they're using the patriot's anger to merry use in fulfilling their incest dreams]

- What if SF reverses his decision: Those who defamed him will have to eat their own words. Note taht deleting comments can't help you. Equally those who spit on MR for SF affair will have to kiss the once smelly arse of MR. When you bungy jump my dear fellas, pls make sure the rope is tight and you have a way of returning.

- Character assassination and assassination plots: Yes you're indirectly supporting both. This is one reason why you shud be easy going on the matter. What we see now is another knee-jerk reaction of patriotism, in which ever side you align with.

- Anti corruption crap: Corruption is all over the world. Why do you think America invaded Iraq? Do you think that US bigwigs do not gain from their arms industry? Well in US the "war for oil and arms" trade is driven in partnerships and shares. So it is legal? And suddenly you preach the little SL to be corruption free. There are two kinda corruption. Firstly fake items deliberately imported [ex: Ratwatte times, and Nimal Siripala's medicine] and prolonging war to gain more. Secondly genuine items and commission from them, but not risking national security for teh petty gain. I hate prior, but I am grown enough to accept latter. If you don't; then tell me ONE NATION in whole world where it does not happen. [I recommend you reading Hitman's book]

- International enemies gain from you mud: Some of you "exposed" SF's corruption. Following their footsteps another lot of you are now "exposing" MR's corruption. Good on you pals, says the US and other international enemy gangs. It is just what they were waiting for. Ch4 couldn't get this far. Thank you for the early Christmas present, say they. I'm compelled to believe taht most of you guys are such idiots to do this.

The bottomline is; taht it is time to stop bullshit. SF and MR either friends or foe, will define SL politics in next few years. It is better than having f**king lunatics of Ranil and Mangy clan. We need to retire them. So let SF and MR continue their politics. It is time for all ton stop mud slinging.

Agree about "f**king lunatics of Ranil and Mangy clan"....

However, do you see what is really happening here?

What is ominous here is not about SF & MR battling it out as yes, they both come from Patriotic roots and have demonstrated results in that regard.

What's ominous here is the "third force" and that is it appears Ranil, Mangy, Hackhim,TNA, ManoGona, i.e.The Traitorous Clan was successful in breaking up the Patriotic Vote block by either eventually getting SF to contest with the Traitorous Clan, or have him go at PE on his own (after giving him all the encouraging signals and wooing him over).

Either way, this was their ploy - to break up the patriotic vote and then come to power (as without it, they had no hope in hell) and sadly, appears SF has fallen victim to their ploy.

This is not a time to be simple minded and call this a simple political mud-slinging match - as that would be something we can regret forever (i.e. when we lose our motherland to the separatists after the Traitorous Clan wins).

Need to think strategic, think smart, think forward - and not be complacent now but only to look back and cry very soon.

Sadly that is not what is going to happen when the so called "hurt" party is already saying in public things like:

I will be a shadow for your future progress and to protect democracy, human rights, media freedom, social justice, ethnic harmony which is fading away in the motherland".

Whereas from the other party, not a single salvo has been fired thus far and even the planned response to the 17 point pathetic lamentation is not going to be I am told (as it has been deemed "it will be stooping low" to do so).

This is what happens when people don't see beyond their nose or carelessly gets their head up their arse!

...........
Afghans and Sri Lankans in riot

By Nicolas Perpitch, Paige Taylor
The Australian
November 23, 2009 12:00AM

TENSIONS at the crammed Christmas Island detention centre have erupted in a bloody fight between 150 Sri Lankan and Afghan asylum-seekers, who attacked each other with broom handles, pool cues and tree branches.

Three people were last night flown to hospital in Perth with serious injuries.

They were among 37 asylum-seekers who needed medical treatment, including 10 who were sent to the island's hospital.

Some of the injuries included a broken jaw and a broken ankle.

The riot began at 6.30pm (10.30pm AEDT) on Saturday in the centre's green block and took 30 minutes to be brought under control by staff from contractor, Serco. Several staff received minor injuries, such as bruises and scratches, and were treated at the centre.

No property was damaged.

A spokesman from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship said the centre had been calm since the fight.

The department and Serco have begun investigations into the incident and the Australian Federal Police are also looking into the matter.

Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

The department spokesman would not comment on any possible causes for the fight.

This is not the first time tensions between Sri Lankans and Afghans have emerged in detention centres.

Friction has also emerged at Indonesia's Australian-funded Tanjung Pinang over perceived privileges handed to the Sri Lankans who refused to leave the Oceanic Viking for almost four weeks, until they had negotiated a deal under which those found to be refugees would be resettled to Australia within 12 weeks.

At Christmas Island, Afghans form an overwhelming majority of the asylum-seekers who have been granted visas this year.

In the year to October 12, 544 Afghans were granted protection visas while 21 Sri Lankans were granted visas.

While the government aims to process people in 90 days, some Afghans have received visas in fewer than 60 days.

Earlier this month, Immigration Minister Chris Evans said the department had sent home 119 asylum-seekers this year.

The only asylum-seekers forcibly removed so far have been 10 Sri Lankans, including six protesting Sinhalese fishermen who were sent home direct from the island to Colombo on a charter jet this month.

Pamela Curr, of the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, said Tamil asylum-seeker claims were going nowhere.

"The problem is the Australian government is using the Sri Lankan embassy for security checks and identity checks," Ms Curr said. "The Sri Lankan embassy are spitting bile about the Tamils. This is the way they can get at them: they go in slow, they don't release the information."

The Sri Lankan high commission could not be reached for comment last night.

Frustrations have also been growing among the 969 asylum-seekers at the Christmas Island centre as it nears its 1088-person capacity.

Recreational space has been lost as beds were put in where there used to be billiards tables, and recently Serco began rationing teabags to two a day. There is also much antagonism over use of the internet, which is limited to 40 minutes a day.

I am in SL but read this blog to see where the wind is blowing. My take on SF is that he is playing a Cat & Mouse game with the joint opposition. This is a first class, con job on the JO to send that eternal loser RW, spinning out of SL into political Siberia. I think Mongal does not know from which side to penetrate - isn't he unusually quiet?

But otherwise MR has bungled his credibility and lost the Golden Mile, the three month stretch just after May 18th when he should have asked for a "Carte Blanche" from the people and then got into the real business of governing. I guess doing the Southern Prov. Council elections with Aanarkali and Sajin put paid to all that. Now he comes with another blooper - getting his mug shot on the Rs. 1000 note. He could have dedicated that to our valiant soldiers and that would have sunk the JO to the point of no return. Or better if he did not print the Rs. 1000 but gave a real monetary benefit to all through a presidential decree.

LoL! LoL!

....continued....
Opposition immigration spokeswoman Sharman Stone called for an urgent review of the detention centre's management.

"There's massive overcrowding now on Christmas Island, but you have to wonder what sort of management or discipline is in place in the centre if you have 150 people brawling," she said. "At what stage were their security checks at that time? I am seriously concerned about whether the department is now so overwhelmed by the numbers there."

Senator Evans' office refused to comment.

The opposition has claimed the Rudd government's relaxation of the legislation governing asylum-seekers is responsible for the influx of boats. The government says instability in Sri Lanka and Afghanistan is to blame.

THE METAMORPHING UNCOMMON CANDIDATE = SF .. SF .. SF .. SR .. SR .. RW .. RW .. ??

.............
Ranil to contest as UNF candidate

With the strong possibility of Ranil Wickremesinghe coming forward as the UNF’s Presidential candidate, the big hullabaloo created by the opposition about former Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Sarath Fonseka becoming their common Presidential candidate is now proving to be a smokescreen.

Political observers said that Wickremesinghe launching his virtual manifesto this week titled “Future Challenges,” wherein he is clearly appealing to woo back the estranged Sinhala Buddhist voters is a prelude to declaring his intention to contest the Presidency.

It was only two weeks ago that the newly formed United National Front virtually announced that Gen. Fonseka would be their candidate. However, at this week’s UNP Working Committee meeting, which was one of the shortest in duration, when leading rebel Johnston Fernando queried whether Fonseka would be the common Presidential candidate, Wickremesinghe had replied that they had not yet decided.

Another hint which throws some light on this development is the fact that Mangala Samaraweera has gone on record this week by stating that there are now nine possible common candidates.
Meanwhile, a member of the UNP dissident group said that they see Gen. Fonseka bogey as a skilful way of staving off the mounting rebellion within the UNP against Wickremesinghe. Earlier, Wickremesinghe had been in two minds about coming forward as the party candidate because of the growing criticism from rebel ranks within, even about his leadership of the party, the sources said.

With Sarath Fonseka deliberately changing certain clauses of his resignation letter jointly drafted by the UNF alliance, especially pertaining to things such as media freedom, it all now points to the UNP Leader being the common candidate of the alliance, they said.

According to insiders, JVP too appears to be split over making Sarath Fonseka their candidate with one group led by Anura Kumara Dissanayaka wanting to teach President Rajapaksa a lesson by backing Fonseka, while party General Secretary Tilvin Silva is leading another group opposing such a decision.

I am really troubled by this type of thing:

Gen. Fonseka, then Army Commander had imported a brand new Mercedes Benz worth over Rs 40 million for official use. He had the right to purchase the vehicle upon retirement if it has been used for over three years. However, in his case, special Cabinet approval has been given to enable him to purchase the vehicle for Rs 2.5 million. The Cabinet had approved the donation of extents of prime land to the three armed forces commanders for winning the separatist war.

I thought there was a word called GRATITUDE that most understood.

Perhaps, KTR would like to reveal to us who the Procurement Officer attached to the Defense Ministry that approved these deals? Was GR & MR blind to these deals after all they were accountable as well as they control the purse strings on defense budgets.

This is typical of Lankan politics as i have mentioned time and again.
Its SF turn to face the wrath.
Sooner or later (oh yes it will come!)the Gang of Four (MR,GR,BR,CR)will have to face the wrath on crooked deals to line their pockets (Hambantota Fund, Hambantota Port, MIG deal to name a few) nepotism, total disregard for the rule of law and order and ofcourse that small matter war crimes.

MR has totally lost it!
He had and still has a golden opportunity to get it back on track but he appears to not trust his own shadow nor the nincompoops that advise him.

The future of President Mahinda Rajapaksa
Sunday, November 22, 2009 Leave a Comment
By Victor Ivan
Courtesy: The Sunday Leader

(November 22, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) If President Mahinda Rajapaksa is not able to make a serious change in his attitude, style of governance and actions after genuinely looking back at his first four years of governance, it is unavoidable that he will crumble as a leader, speedily heading towards obliteration even though he will be able to win the next presidential election. The President should have critically looked back and reviewed his performance after the results of the Southern Provincial Council. But that did not happen.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa is a leader comparable to a highly valuable gem which is uncut and unpolished. If that gem was handed over to the custody of a versatile group of craftsmen, it could have become a very precious and a rare gem after careful cutting and polishing by experienced hands. Unfortunately, this gem is being continuously cut and re-polished by unskilled craftsmen who are not conversant with the subject. If this is to continue further, his importance and his value could get completely lost.

Out of all the leaders who came to power after independence, Mahinda Rajapaksa is the leader who is closest to the general public. He is not a leader who represents the elite society of Colombo Seven. He is also not a leader who came from the lower rungs of society but from the middle. He, like President Premadasa, does not think too highly of political dogma, but is a utilitarian leader.

Like President Premadasa, he also had a determination to become the leader of the country some day. He waited patiently until the right time came. Like President Premadasa he too had a high degree of endurance. He was quite patient against the humiliation directed at him. When the right time dawned, he utilised that opportunity in a clever manner.

The post of premier and the candidature for the presidency did not fall into his lap. He created a situation where he could not be denied these posts. Under the special and complex political situation that prevailed in the country, despite President Chandrika Kumaratunga working against him, and Ranil Wickremesinghe having a better chance to come to power, he still won the presidential election. It was on his birthday, that the official results of the election were announced

tbc..

Jay said...

Since the day he came to power, the most prominent weakness he has exhibited as a state leader is that he has not selected a team of high calibre, experienced, unbiased officers who could assist him in the governance of the State. In lieu, of the experienced and clever, he selected people from among his friends or relations.

Quite different to this situation, President Premadasa had a team of very clever officers who had been selected carefully. Among them Paskaralingam, Bradman Weerakoon, K.H.J. Wijedasa, and Susil Siriwardene gained the utmost confidence of President Premadasa. In steering the ship of state, he sought advice from this experienced team and in implementing his commands he had their assistance and help.

Victory over Pirapaharan

After coming to power, the greatest challenge to be faced by President Mahinda Rajapaksa was considered to be the de facto state of Pirapaharan. Due to the cease-fire agreement, it had received a legal acceptance which was not there earlier. They had identified the land they administered and it was depicted on maps. These areas of land were considered as belonging to Pirapaharan’s de facto state. They were treated as external of the Sri Lankan state to a greater degree.

Pirapaharan never harbored a genuine concern for an intermediate solution through negotiations. His only requirement was a separate state. However, due to the environment created externally by the ceasefire agreement, there was a strong notion both locally and internationally that the only alternative to solving the problem was to continue with the failed process of negotiations. Due to LTTE’s military successes up until then, there was a strong belief within the country and internationally that the LTTE was a movement that could not be defeated militarily.

Having a de facto state within the Sri Lankan state was the biggest challenge Sri Lanka had to face. It was a challenge that should either be won through negotiations or by military means. The greatest endemic characteristic of President Mahinda Rajapaksa is the fact that he deviated from the path taken by his predecessors regarding this dispute and was firm in the aim of defeating the LTTE militarily.

His stubborn stance was the subject of severe suspicion and protests by the international community. It was also subject to suspicion and protest by the local groups who were of the view that this problem should be solved only through negotiations.

It is at this point that President Mahinda Rajapaksa shifted away from people who thought moderately and was pushed forcefully towards a small group of extremists. At this stage, as the moderate thinking people were taking a firm anti-war stand, Mahinda had no other alternative to select. That group of people, who had the ability to think moderately when dealing with other issues, were at the extreme end when dealing with the issue of war for which they were totally against.

Due to the ideological conflict between this group and the Mahinda Rajapaksa government, a deep rift emerged. The result is that President Mahinda Rajapaksa has got into the grips of social political forces which were loyal to the war effort and narrow-minded in dealing with other issues.

This limitation of the President was favourable to the war launched against Pirapaharan. He possessed the stubbornness and strong determination not to care about the ceasefire agreement and enter a decisive war. He also had the quality of disregarding any pressures brought on him locally or internationally.

He had the ability of entrusting the responsibility of executing the war to clever individuals disregarding dissension. There was a highly advanced and superb publicity campaign that was launched to ensure a new social recognition to the members of the armed forces.

Why are Sinhalese are so ungrateful to Ranil even after extraordinary work he did to reconcile with my leader. If Ranil was the elected leader in 2005, then Sri Lanka and Tamil Eelam are coexisting now side by side without any problem. If Ranil's trick worked then there could have been lots of cross border trade between Tamil Eelam and Sri Lanka doing now resulting almost a ten fold boost to mutual economies. Unfortunately Sri Lankan were not able to see the value existence of Tamil Eelam under the leadership of Hon. Piripaharan.

UoM team wins world prize.....

Out of 11 teams that represented the IEEE student branch of Moratuwa University , two other teams secured the 26 and the 50 places. The members of the winning team Lalintha Polpitiya, Chetiya Abeysinghe and Parinda Jayasitri are Bsc Engineering students from electrical, electronic and telecommunication departments. Lalintha, also the IEEE student branch President at Moratuwa said "We didn't have the pressure of winning, what mattered was the participation and enjoying the learning experience. However, when we knew that we were leading the online ranking table we were determined to stay at the top."
The students must be members of an IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) branch. IEEE is the world's largest professional organization for advancement of science and technology with 365,000 members in over 160 countries.

How is your racist Tamil wesa-amma? Does she take a regular bath and does she scrub down-there? Does she put ginerly oil in her koodhi?

Questions question, so few answers in life!

Yo, whore puppydog, do you like my sexy eyes? you wanna cum in them?

Such are also offers in life!

Now now, come on!

First you racist mommafukkers accuse us of discrimination and not giving your language a proper place and now when I have gone to night school and learned some Tamil and use it here, you are being nasty to me.

Make up your mind will ya?

ff and others,

there is a lot of corruption in SL. this space is not enough to talk about it.

we discuss defence here.

so it makes sense to talk about defence related corruption here.

i don't think SF getting a benz or getting land free of charge are defence related.

MD,

The point is about an UNGRATEFUL individual teaming up with veteran traitorious bastarads and trying to come to power whereby the veteran traitorous bastards will go about breaking up our motherland - and that IS a defense related matter whether you like to think so or not.

Even in Australian Detention Camps, LTTE-rs boat people demand special rights!

Think of the bigger picture.. have we not learnt any lessons?

They may be bogus, economic refugees but are sowing the seeds for future discord, they will continue to be a thorn in Sri Lankan affairs.

The 1970's and 1983 refugees were the same who "allegdy" bribed lobbied the western world to highlight crises in SL.

It will not suprise me these very same refugees or next generation will hound SL in 10, 15 years time.

We may be fllipant and amuse ourselves with these reports, if history repeats itself its not funny!

{communal harmony existed in the 2001-2005 period}

True. Here's how true it was:

1) 600 anti-LTTE Tamils killed
2) 100+ SLA MI operatives, including senior SLA MIs killed
3) 200+ Muslims killed in vendetta killings for earlier supporting SLA
4) 19 Shiploads of weapons unloaded in Mullativu
5) SLA spat on, urinated on, but no actions authorizied by RW GOSL
6) Ponguthamil rallies where SLA effigies were hacked and burnt, but no actions authorizied by RW GOSL

etc. etc.

Yes some communal harmony that was.....as much harmony as when you fukked your Jaffna goat against its will!

hehehehe

We may be fllipant and amuse ourselves with these reports, if history repeats itself its not funny! We should learn to respect all communities rights live in their own homelands. Peaceful creation of Tamil Eelam is the only solution. Otherwise they will continue to be a thorn in Sri Lankan affairs.

"communal harmony existed in the 2001-2005 period"

which idiot says this????

the opposite is true.

there were MAJOR race riots in 2002, 2003.

worst riot in SL history after 1983, written by tissanaigam who is MUCH respected by those who make the above statement!!!!

were there such horrible race riots in,
1984
1985
1986
1987
1988
1989
1990
1991
1992
1993
1994
1995
1996
1997
1998
2000
2001?????????

NO.

so it means there was absolutely no racial harmony in 2001-2005 compared to previous years going back to 1983.

"Ponguthamil rallies where SLA effigies were hacked and burnt, but no actions authorizied by RW GOSL"

Burning an effigy is considered free speech, a fundamental right. This is why Singalese can't coexist with Eelam Tamils.

Moshe Dyan said...

there is no fcuking need to create tamil elam.

only 6% to 8% are "elam tamils" in SL today down from 13% in 1981.

the trend will continue bcos nothing has changed FOR THEM ACCORDING TO THEM.

this means in another 6 years this percentage will fall to 2% to 4% which is below the materiality limit.

further, only 50% "elam tamils" live in north east today. this means their % will be 1% to 2% in the north east in 6 years. totally immaterial.

other tamils don't like to be called "elam tamils". they HATE it.

time is killing all possibilities of tamil elam.

more and more tamils consider SL as their nation and happily adapt to SL much to the dismay of TE jokers.

they love ethnic integration and multi ethnic colonization of the north.

Moshe Dyan said...

time has turned tamils into sinhalese!!

e.g. ratwattes

and now it is happening FAST!!

check the number of tamil students studying in sinhala today. a larger number of tamil students who study in english or tamil leave the country!!!

sinhala is the dumping ground of races in SL (excuse me full sinhalese for saying this). its like the ocean. millions of tons of fresh water (even dirty water) pour in but turn to sea water by default.

Power has shifted from the decision making bodies of the UNP to a cabal of outsiders where Mangala Samaraweera and Rauff Hakeem are the key players.

UNP decision making bodies have become mere spectators in a drama that inevitably involves them as well. Johnston Fernando’s question last week as to whether Wickremesinghe has agreed to field a common candidate is symptomatic of this trend. The decision makers now have to inquire whether a decision has been made.

fun at an australian detention centre when tamil elamists attacked afghans!!

whatever the root causes, the brawl was based on RACE and RACISM. the 2 groups at riot were CLEARLY based on race - tamil verses afghan.

37 injured!!

37 out of 970 injured. a 3.8% injury rate.

how many injured in the arse and other private parts????

wherever they go they create trouble.

good luck australia. they are future citizens!!
