Some exclusives on Fonseka Coup, HICORP etc.

First allegations of a Fonseka Coup/plot in 2005

The first allegations that Fonseka was plotting against the political leadership of the country came in late 2005 when he was chosen and subsequently appointed Army Commander. These allegations were made by some top-ranking Army officers. We were privy to some of this information at that time.

While a good section of President Rajapakse's close aides took it seriously, Secretary Defence Gotabhaya Rajapakse vetoed the allegations and defended Fonseka. His argument was Fonseka was a necessary evil, an equal matching force to route the LTTE.

Second allegation of a Fonseka Coup/plot in 2007-08

Allegations against Fonseka came up again from within the Army following 1) the acquisition of large amounts of armoured vehicles considered at that time to be ideal for crowd control in a military take-over. This was later disproved with the launching of the Mechanized Infantry Division combining the Air Mobile Brigade (termed jokingly at that time as පයිං යන Air Mobile due to the Army not having air capabilities to airlift these units to battle), units of the Armoured Corp and others.

2) Fonseka was again suspected of planning a coup when he brought his Sinha Regiment to guard vital installations in Colombo. The greatest fear of a coup arose when he attempted to change the security at the Presidential Palace. Subsequently the President's Corp was created to provide security to the President, his family and other dignitaries.

Third allegation of a Fonseka Coup/plot in 2009

The third allegation of a coup arose when some members of the Special Forces and Military Intelligence who were reporting directly to Fonseka provided information to Fonseka above a particular Brigadier and the Secretary Defence on the demise of Prabhakaran and other top-ranking Tigers. This happened soon after Fonseka returned to the country during the final phase of the war.

Fonseka despised the use of the Special Forces by this particular Brigadier (now Major General) and above all, Secretary Defence (operating through the Brigadier). He got into loggerheads with both claiming as his point of argument the 26 Special Forces killed during the final phase of the battle could have been minimized if the operation was not rushed.

Fonseka under surveillance

Constant rantings by Fonseka, particularly before and after the Army Tattoo led to him being kept under surveillance. It was even accused that the then Navy Commander Wasantha Karannagoda had a team following Fonseka. It was during this period that Fonseka was approached by Mangala Samaraweera and Anura Kumara.

Fonseka did not always show respect for his peers in the Security Forces. His command of the Sri Lanka Army gave him enormous power which he did not hesitate to demonstrate even at Security Council meetings. He had the comparative advantage of being a ground commander and having access to an experienced and talented Army. He deeply despised anyone in the Army directly reporting to the political command.

Fonseka's ambition was to command a very large Army but the politicians did not trust his motives and, above all, his ego. Some might say that the politicians were proven right. Others say misplaced suspicions drove Fonseka to take revenge.

HICORP

Upul Illangamge was first alerted to his name being part of an investigation on HICORP soon after Fonseka's political defection. He was contacted by investigators in Sri Lanka who had by that time arrested agents of HICORP in Sri Lanka. The documents the investigators uncovered contained Illangamge's name.

Whether Illangamge's name was used fraudulently and without his express approval or whether Illangame was left sore by Danuna Tillekeratne in a procurement deal is not clear. What is clear is that Illangamge's statement was not made under duress or for the promise of money. He was clearly angry with Danuna and Fonseka. If not, Illangamge would not take steps to file a complaint with the FBI on the HICORP deal.

Protests by Maha Sangha

Reports from within higher echelons of the Police and Politics indicate that the deep driver of the resentment by the Maha Sangha, particularly that of a chief prelate is the government dismissing some favors made by the said prelate directly to President Rajapakse. This particularly concerns a request that DIG Nimal Mediwaka of Kandy be appointed IGP. The government went on to appoint DIG Mahinda Balasooriya as IGP instead.

Rana aka Parrot Moron,

What happened dude. Were you stuck be a HVDC pulse?

Donkey, perhaps your chicken fried brain can't comprehend the difference between bilateral trade and overt-covert attempts by US to dictate terms. We are all for trade but not at all for US to dictate terms.

Take these two Sri Lankan cents and buy a few clues before you act the pundit next time. The types of clues you need are dirt cheap.

Rana should be studied by mental health researchers. He has a mental sickness. Like all mental cases he doesn't take advice.

Rana is suffering from Dissociative Disorder. Left untreated he can end up in a mental hospital soon.

Dissociative disorders: People with these disorders suffer severe disturbances or changes in memory, consciousness, identity, and general awareness of themselves and their surroundings. These disorders usually are associated with overwhelming stress, which may be the result of traumatic events, accidents, or disasters that may be experienced or witnessed by the individual. Dissociative identity disorder, formerly called multiple personality disorder, or "split personality", and depersonalization disorder are examples of dissociative disorders.

All readers of this blog will be convinced Rana has this disorder.

"NFF leader, politician with rare political acumen – President
Rasika Somarathna

President Mahinda Rajapaksa identified NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa as a politician with rare political acumen. The President said so during the launch of a book containing speeches made by National Freedom Front Leader and former MP Wimal Weerawansa in Parliament.

The event was held at Temple Trees with the attendance of a large crowd including prominent politicians, artistes, religious dignitaries and well-wishers.

Speaking further he said that Weerawansa at all times put the country before self and politics and always made the people aware of threats faced by the nation from both within and outside. The President also noted that the book titled ‘Garu Kathanayaka Thumani (Hon.Speaker)’ contained several such speeches made by Weerawansa in Parliament.

While hailing Weerawansa as one of the people who had always stood to safeguard the nation when it was in peril, the President added that his fearless voice would be ever embedded in the people’s mind.

Elected representatives of the people should at all times be highly sensitive and responsive towards challenges faced by the country and its people, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday.

Also making the masses aware on the prevailing issues on a continued basis was the responsibility of all elected representatives, he added.

The event saw a large gathering including Ven.Kamburugamuwe Vajira Thera, Bengamuwe Nalaka Thera, Ministers Dullus Alahapperuma, Patali Champika Ranawaka, President’s Senior Advisor Basil Rajapaksa, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Dr.Gunadasa Amarasekera, Prof.Carlo Fonseka and Veteran Journalist Sunil Madhawa Prematilleke in addition to a number of prominent artistes, politicians and well- wishers."

Canada fears pussycat terrorism. No need for rocket science. It is the most pussycat exploited grounds in teh world today. And it is where they have most power.

And look at teh flat and plain denial of David P'pille. He is lying - obvious, plain, intentional lies. Lies that he issues with zero respect to audience. He knows that everyone knows it. It just sounds like some Mafia lead publicly stateing that they mean peace to a law officer in a hollywood film. It just means that they are gonna kill him. Another words, DavidP simply confirms National post's fear.

Furthermore, there had been numerous attacks by similar groups after May19th, which Canadian police still think as work of Martians or someone most recent being the Uthayan paper in Canada.

Canada cannot let the law run obsolete. It has to crack down terror like the US did with Al Qaeda.

And that is not a favor for us, like it was called before. We Sri Lankans find this as Canad's own problem, which they can approach as they wish, and bare the fruits of it as it comes. We do not want to interfere into Canandian affairs obviously.

Canada all the best in your war against terror.

On couple such occasions I had taken some American or European friends for dinner and paid for everybody myself. But the waiter assumed 'Sudhas' are the ones paying. So the poor bugger would almost worship them and provide poor service to the local chap who would actually tip him in the end. Parrot bugger's inferiority complex is a good case study for sociologists.

What Americans are saying is that things can be better.

What Sri Lankans have is NOTHING compared to what an average American voter has.

If Sri Lanka gets 10% of American democracy today, we will be in a much happier nation.

Remember, beggars can't be arrogant or choosers.

LankaPade said...

Can America put a top general in prison, then cook evidence against him, and then put him in trial?

NEVER!!!

How come when a poor Sri Lankan goes to America, his net wealth goes up by few thousand times by the time that person retires compared to the one left behind in Sri Lanka?

Can you be 56 years old and expect to get a job offer in Sri Lanka?

Moshe Dyan said...

same with SL. democracy CAN get better.

if beggars cannot be chosers, then the same applies to democracy as well!!!

while US can have super democracy, SL can have third world democracy.

cooked up charges against gonzeka won't stand a chance in court, civil, criminal or army. evidence has to be convincing and proovable. unfortunatel for gonz, he has CREATED evidence himself!!!

his own guys have given MORE THAN enough evidence against him. by law if you co-operate, you MAY be released or otherwise relax charges against you.

what did LTTE achieve towards tamil elam, tamil aspirations.

1. creating a tamil only jaffna, mannar, kili, mula districts. no chingala. no muslims.

2. getting tamil recognised as a national language

3. self-rule. LTTE did achieve a de facto self-rule in part of what they call tamil elam for 18+ years.

4. got a structure similar to a federal structure via the 13th amendment in 1987

5. erased evidence of chingala claims to 'tamil elam'

6. established tamil police, tamil courts, tamil elam history books, tamil monetary systems and tamil fiscal systems.

7. gave freedom to tamil elamists to freely hoist they tamil elam national flag without being arrested, intimidated, ridiculed, screwwed, assfcuked, tortured, subjecting to the manhole punishment where the criminal has to consume shitt to escape

8. forced the chingala politicians to LISTEN to tamil aspirations.

9. effectively stopped/reduced chingala colonization of 'tamil elam'.

what did the peaceful, highly educated, democratic tamil leaders achieve?????

NOTHING!!

1. thanthai chelva only dreamt this and talked about this.

2. ACTC, ITAK, TULF, etc. only managed to get provisional recognition.

3. only dreamt of selfrule

4. chingalams could tear agreements at will and use them as toilet paper.

5. couldn't stop 'chingalisation of tamil elam' no matter how hard they tried.

6. could only dream about it and talk about it ONEDAY. that one fcuking day NEVER came for non-LTTE tamil leaders.

7. the 6th amendment forced everyone to shut the fcuk up on tamil elam.

8. chingala and hindi politicians laughed at toilet elam politicians.

9. couldn't stop chingala, muslim encroachment into 'tamil homolands'.

so no tamil aspirations without the LTTE. simple. clear.

if you want tamil homolands, COME DIE FOR IT AND GET IT.

otherwise kiss our arses, clean toilets, consume excreta, offer thangatchies in returen for tamil elam to the ak-47 carrying gods and beg for TE and dream, dream dream and wet the bed in the TE wet dream.

this is why the GTF is a load of BS.

LankaPade said...

Why the Fonseka was good when he was with us and bad when he left us?

That is the bankrupt moral thread within the hearts of Sri Lankans.

We are all bound to each other through a thread of corruption and wrong doings. They matter once you break that thread.

That is why we can never be a successful nation in the world.

We are a bunch of cheaters, thieves, and thugs.

What are we achieving for ourselves?
What is our mission?
How are we achieving it?

e.g. kill as many as possible.
again gonz did a good job. he was always a trigger happy killer. fantastic during wartime, USELESS and even DANGEROUS during peace time.

http://www.lankatimes.com/viewreply.php?id=24106

however, after the war we need GOOD ppl. ppl capable of doing good, not bad. that was when the fallout happened 3 months b4 gonz went to the other side.

Now military coup fears in turkey!!! So many similarities. From bbc.

Turkey's Gul seeks to calm military 'coup plot' fears
Turkey's president has said tensions over an alleged military coup plot will be resolved within the law, after meeting the head of the armed forces.
Abdullah Gul made the statement after a summit with PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan and armed forces chief Gen Ilker Basbug.
Tension between the government and the military has risen following a round of arrests over the alleged plot.
The former heads of the air force and navy and a general have now been freed, having been questioned by prosecutors.
The three - retired air force head Ibrahim Firtina, former navy chief Ozden Ornek and former deputy army chief Ergin Saygun - have not been charged but remain under investigation, prosecutors said.
Gen Saygun was ordered to report to the police regularly.
They were among the most senior of more than 40 officers arrested on Monday.
Some 20 senior military officers have been charged and remanded in custody this week over the so-called "sledgehammer" plot, which reportedly dates back to 2003.

The military has denied any coup plot and has held its own officers' summit to discuss the "serious situation" in the wake of the latest arrests.
Reassurance
Adm Ornek and Gen Firtina appeared in court in Istanbul on Thursday morning for questioning.
Speaking after his release, Gen Firtina said he had been there to "clarify some misunderstandings on issues that were being reported as facts" about the army.
Plot thickens in Turkey 'coup plan'
After several hours of talks with Gen Basbug on Thursday, Mr Gul sought to reassure the country.
"It was stressed that citizens can be sure that the problems on the agenda will be solved within the framework of the constitution and our laws," a statement from his office said.
The BBC's Jonathan Head in Istanbul says an investigation which has been deeply embarrassing for Turkey's armed forces has now become a little less so.
After four days of questioning, three of the most senior officers serving in the military at the time of the alleged plot have been released.
They had been listed as ring-leaders in the alleged plot in documents printed in a newspaper last month, our correspondent says.
The plot's alleged author, another four-star general is still being questioned, he adds.
Scores of people, including military officers, journalists and academics, are on trial in connection with that case.

'Painful transformation'
Analysts say the crackdown on the military would have been unthinkable only a few years ago.
The army has regarded itself as the guardian of a secular Turkish state, but its power has been eroded in recent years, with Turkey enacting reforms designed to prepare it for entry to the European Union.
Many Turks regard the cases as the latest stage in an ongoing power struggle between Turkey's secular nationalist establishment and the governing AK Party.
Critics believe the Ergenekon and sledgehammer investigations are simply attempts to silence the government's political and military opponents.
The AK Party has its roots in political Islam, and is accused by some nationalists of having secret plans to turn staunchly secular Turkey into an Islamic state.
The government rejects those claims, saying its intention is to modernise Turkey and move it closer to EU membership.
"Transformations may sometimes be painful," Economy Minister Ali Babacan said Wednesday.
"We are trying to make Turkey's democracy first class."

Chaps, here is what Global Tamil Forum leader SJ Emmanuel said to Guardian UK:

The GTF, is led by Father SJ Emmanuel, a 75-year-old Catholic priest. He said the organisation was a democratic and non-violent organisation and adhered to "the principles of emancipation promoted by Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King".

And here are few extracts from rascal's letter to TNA published in TamilNut. We know how LTTE plonkers adhered to the principles of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King.

An open appeal to the leaders of the Tamil National Alliance

blah.. blah..

You formed the TNA and won two Parliamentary Elections, the latter a more successful victory with the help of the LTTE.

In spite of many difficulties and even rejections by the Sinhala governments, you all kept your unity with the Tamil people and their LTTE leadership.

After the tragic events of 2009 to wipe out people and leaders from Vanni, you faced the Presidential Election asking the people to vote for a change of government.

blah.. blah..

This genuine desire as expressed in the Vaddukkoddai Resolution of 1976, affirmed by the Tamils at the Parliamentary Elections of 1977, strengthened by the heroic sacrifices of the people and the militants under the leadership of the LTTE still remain the underlying goal of all the Tamils, even though those within the island are unable to stand up for it.

blah.. blah..

KB,

this a-hole is a SHAMELESS RACIST!!

"You formed the TNA and won two Parliamentary Elections, the latter a more successful victory with the help of the LTTE."

shamelessly admitting that LTTE rigged the election.

bloody hell!

"you all kept your unity with the Tamil people and their LTTE leadership."

aha! this is the weakpoint.
"He said the organisation was a democratic and non-violent organisation and adhered to "the principles of emancipation promoted by Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King"

non-violence is THEIR choice, not necessarily ours!!!!!! we PREFER the OTHER method.

start "ghandian" "non-violent" satyagraha crap over tamil racist demands and we will use violence. violence will turn boys to tigers and we are back in business. the lovely and exciting business of killing.

the first round 1976-2009 killed 100,000 tamil elamists and chased away 1,300,000. the second round will take take of the remainder.

the important thing is NOT to give ANYTHING. FORCE them to take up arms again. invite them to the boxing ring somehow.

When the job is done, forcing retirement of military heroes who fought for the liberation is treason.

This is even more despicable act than exposing LRRP by RW.

The trend continues, the current president always does worst than the predecessor.

Sri Lanka is being lead by insecurity. This is how you build a nation with no future.

This is certainly not the way who love the land rule. This is how timid rule.

Calm down. Cool the temper. For once stop shooting hatred against others.

And then go back and read that SirimevanK article thoroughly. He has clearly justified the actions taken on most Army lads.

If his facts are true, that obviously tells us that SF ruined army after his departure, since he's solely responsible for the misguiding of each and every soldier listed in it. If the article is true, I see nothing wrong in the side of GR, and of course MR is so distant for these matters.

GR can be wrong only if the facts in article are not true.

I cannot confirm/reject his facts, and I know that you cannot either.

I don't expect all military leadership to be true leaders with integrity (this is not a word in SL dictionary though).

In the past, you hardly see military leader's children doing higher education. Lately, we tend to see some of them have money available for their children to have good education abroad fully paid by their dads.

Some even had money for their children to have Masters, PhDs without scholarships.

No matter how corrupt they may be, they had the synergy finally to win the war.

That synergy is broken, it takes two hands to clap.

It is not fair to blame on one warlord when others are involved.

A large Military is useless for us anyway now that there is no direct enemy. LTTE gain over us not because they were good, but we were stupid.

SF should have handled in a much better way. This will come back and bite our back and hope I will be proven wrong.

Brown, Miliband and Hague appear to have upset a few.

FM Boggols summons acting HC of UK says...(Miliband statement has worldwide attention and GOSL has taken serious note of this statement)

Then we have Defence spokesman Keheliya Rambukwela
crying "unethical"(assume he knows what it means!)..saying [ IF the GTF is affiliated to the LTTE we regret Britain preaching democracy whilst attending a forum that preaches terrorism}

Boggols as usual shoots without thinking nor carrying out due diligence or is he playing to the naive galleries?

Boggols and his team together with Basil. R met these very same members of the GTF only a few months ago. No doubt the Acting HC of UK and diplomats would have reminded him.

Gordon Brown, David Miliband, Conservatives, and the Liberals would never have attended such a high profile event if they had even a hint of GTF being affiliated with the LTTE or any kind of terrorism.
Yes, UK elections are around the corner but for some 150k max votes?

Frankly, Labour secretly wishes it loses and the Conservatives secretly wishes it loses too..Nobody wants to pick up the mess!

Lankaweb has gone overtime on this issue.
HLDM (bless him!) writes a lengthy (sigh) diatribe and ends with a passing shot at his nemesis RW (Keeps getting turned down for a diplomatic post in Aus).
Naturally, HLDM needs to write having being shunned by that toe rag KTR from Asian Tribune and losing all credibility with the Aus media.
Strange that HLDM did not write a piece commemorating the 20 years of the abduction and the killing of Richard De Zoysa during the Premadasa era.
Lankaputhra keep writing!

It's laughable that all Tamil Forums are branded by MR GOSL as associated with LTTE. Why demonise all Tamils as LTTE? Insecurity?

Not all Tamil Forums are associated with the LTTE.

I, for one being half tamil being able, willing and capable of supporting a low profile group called the Tamil Leadership Group (TLG)
Our Mission, is similar to the Jewish "H" Leadership Group.

To involve, inspire and educate career-focused Tamil college students to become future Tamil leaders at large and active participants through mentorship, internships, and education to provide Tamils of all background the ability to discover their true potential, in an atmosphere of open inquiry and mutual respect.

The Group Founders and backers are highly networked in the professional community of industry leaders and fast trackers in US, Europe, Aus, HK, Canada, India and SL. These professionals have agreed to help selected students from renowned Universities around the world to obtain the experiences, mentorship, networking, and internships needed to build their resume and advance their careers together with financial assistance (means tested) to complete their education in their chosen fields.

We seek to make internships a win-win opportunity as talented, driven students get matched up with TLG mentors and networked professionals in the fields of medicine, business, arts and other vocation.

Following Graduation the program extends to utilizing the networking power of our professional network to add real added value in their chosen career path.
In return, the chosen students spend 6-9 months in Sri Lanka on volunteer work & leadership development programs. Participants explore the land, the people and their identity. This “gap “ program whilst is unique in its emphasis on empowerment of participants, by helping them design and direct their individual program, social responsibility/coexistence and interaction with Sri Lankans.

The first year (2009) 20 high caliber students were selected based on interviews, psychometric assessments, academic and social achievements.
The students were from:
IIT Kanpur-2,
Cambridge-2,
Princeton-2,
Stanford 2,
Oxford 2,
Univ of Sydney –2,
Harvard-2
Univ of Melb- 2,
Fontainebleau-1
Peradeniya-1,
LSE- 1,
Univ of Toronto-1

In 2010 the intake has increased to 30 students with 50 students expected for 2011.

Funding through corporate/individual donations and annual covenants have already raised circa US $2m and commitments/pledges of further US $200k.

It's about time Lankans start thinking of the future instead bickering about short term gains!

Have a nice day!

BULLSHIT!

we discussed about this here sometime back in relation to SL (national), not TAMIL (racist). it ONLY worls for an EXISTING country not a mythical non-existant country.

MOST of the selected SAKKILIYAS are tamil racists in your TLG. that is HIGHLY RACIST and DISCRIMINATORY!!!!

ONLY tamils can get this shitt!! how racist is that????

the problem with tamil leaders in SL and tamil madu is RACISM. look at their politics. 100% dominated by racism. apart from EPDP there is not a single party that is NOT racist!!!!

you should be changing this instead of continuing it. bloody idiots don't understand this. they keep generating racism!!

FYI, they will NOT succeed in shaping SL policy bcos, SLs consider them racist sakkiliyas, nothing more. shed this RACIST policies of your, and ppl will listen to you.

Very true!

We have had many a "Tamil forum" that did well for themselves when they cut-loose from the "We Tamil" racist agenda and decided to live in Sri Lanka as "Sri Lankans" first and then "Tamils" as next.

These fine Tamil men and women did marvelous things. They are in my view Anwar Sadat x 100 times!

They decided enough is enough and joined hands with Motherlanka to rid the nation of vile terrorism.

They played an active role in "cleansing" the East of terrorists and later, they played a crucial role in being moles, spotters, spies, etc. when the state forces were on march to liberate the North.

Now who could these "Tamil forum" members be I wonder...uh, I give up.

Tamils Tamils Tamils…”We Tamils” “We Tamil” “We Tamils”…this has become the racist whorebitches’ fucked-up insane scream over the past 30 years and given the devastation such racist ideology brought upon themselves, you would think at least now they would have moved out of such self-destructive insanity and start to think of themselves as “We Sri Lankans” !!!

US Senator Casey Remarks Read at Global Tamil Forum Event

WASHINGTON, DC--U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs, provided the following statement which was read at the Global Tamil Forum inaugural event in London on Wednesday.

"As Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on South Asia, I have examined the unfortunate effects of the conflict in Sri Lanka. I have sought to shed light on the plight of internally displaced people and the importance of development in post-conflict Sri Lanka. As Americans, we will continue to seek opportunities to play a constructive role in post-conflict Sri Lanka. As Sri Lanka heals from the horrors of war, it will also require that the Tamil population in and outside the country play a key role in the development of Sri Lanka’s infrastructure as well as its social fabric."

"I want to thank the Global Tamil Forum for its efforts to support the democratic process in Sri Lanka, especially during this difficult time in the country’s history. I hope that the Sri Lankan people will be able to come together and focus on a common future that moves beyond war, terrorism and violence as means of political expression. I also want to applaud the work of the U.S. Tamil Political Action Council. USTPAC has raised awareness of the humanitarian crisis facing the Tamil people in Sri Lanka and has played a constructive role in educating U.S. policymakers. I look forward to our continued cooperation and wish you a successful forum in London."

Sri Lanka's human-rights and free-speech problems need international attention

Sri Lanka's civil war might be over, but the European Union recently dropped the island's preferential trade status because of human-rights violations.

Guest columnist Peter Mountford says Sri Lankan media are not free to discuss the challenges, so the best hope is international attention.

By Peter Mountford

In post-civil war Sri Lanka, where democratic institutions are more imperiled than ever, the international press has a vital role to play — even more important than the diplomatic efforts of our governments — in forcing greater transparency and accountability.

I just spent two weeks in Sri Lanka and whenever I sat down with someone in Colombo to ask their opinion of the country's political situation, they'd scan the room, lean in close, and ask if we could talk off the record. When I called opposition journalists they demurred, and suggested that we meet in person. They wouldn't say it out loud, but my driver did: "The phones are all tapped," he explained with refreshing bluntness.

I asked if he thought my phone at the Hilton might be bugged. He bobbled his head vaguely, hesitating, and said, "Well ... "

This was an example of what Kesara Abeywardena, a journalist from The Daily Mirror — the closest thing there is to an independent newspaper on the island — referred to as Sri Lanka's "culture of self-censorship." Abeywardena used to write a political column, but decided it would be better to broaden his focus.

"For your safety?" I asked.

"Well ... " he replied, smiling slightly.

Over the last year, numerous journalists have, in the grim local parlance, been "white vanned." The latest, Prageeth Eknaligoda, a vocal critic of the government, has been missing since Jan. 24. Chandana Sirimalwatte, the editor of an opposition paper, Lanka, was recently detained by the police and his newspaper was ordered to stop printing.

Since President Mahinda Rajapaksa came to power, arrest warrants increasingly have been used to muzzle opponents. Earlier this month, to the shock of the West, police picked up the main opposition candidate, Sarath Fonseka (literally, apparently, as he was unwilling to get out of his chair). Last week they arrested Fonseka's son-in-law's mother. At the end of January a dozen or so ranking members of the military — all allies of Fonseka — were fired or arrested.

The charges, in all of these cases, are trumped up. The point is the message, and the message is, "We will get you. If you're not around, we'll get your next of kin."

Malinda Seneviratne, a sharp but unabashedly pro-government journalist, is the only person I spoke to who was happy to go on the record about anything. He said that these things have been going on for years, but no one complained because the country was mired in civil war.

Tamil Grievances –Untouched & Unattended
By Gomin Dayasri

The voting pattern in the North and East is understandable as the Government had failed to attend to the legitimate grievances of the Tamils. It is a protest vote they registered against President Rajapakse rather than a vote in support of Sarath Fonseka.

They impliedly expressed confidence that some of the political parties allied to the opposition candidate are more acceptable than the Tamil parties that are aligned with the Government.

Even those who opposed the candidate marked a cross for the swan. This will become more pronounced at the General Elections with a larger turn out of voters with the political parties representing Tamil interest entering the fray and Tamil candidates on the slate. The government can expect a resounding defeat to which it is a contributory element

It would be wrong to assume the vote is an endorsement of the LTTE but if the government fails to find remedies to the justifiable grievances of the Northern and Eastern Tamils, before long photographs of Prabhakaran will appear on the cadjan walls in the backwoods of the peninsula. The protest vote carries the sound of a siren; it is a wake up call for the government. An opportunity was provided to build a permanent bridge of friendship to the North and the East after saving them from the clutches of the terrorists, credit for which must flow to the Government. Sadly it appears lost on the people in the North and East, as other mischievous forces have been at work. The Government and Tamils are both at fault.

The Sinhala nationalists must be in the forefront in the struggle to find solutions for the genuine Tamil grievances. They fought valiantly to save the country from the terrorist menace. Now they must step in to avert the country from falling again to a terrorists trap set by the Tiger proxy holders and there is no better remedy than attending to the justifiable grievances of the Tamil people and not of the Tamil politicians. It should not be with the expectation of any reciprocal Tamil support but with the objectivity of building a society where people can live in harmony with security. It is no fault if the Tamils even after some of their grievances are attended, still continue to vote for parties of Tamil origin. They would do so, considering the comfort factor but such parties would not be able to deliver the message of separatism effectively if the grievances are eliminated. This would be the first step in the distant dream of establishing national political parties representing members of all communities being elected to parliament from each district.

Still the Tamils of the North and East are economically dependent on the pocket money doled out by the Diaspora for their subsistence. The Diaspora through the strings of the purse control their brethren in Sri Lanka. It was stupid of the government to think that the Tamils will vote for them after seen their kinsmen incarcerated in camps for unreasonable long period of time. Indeed the votes obtained from Tamil voters by the President shows still there is space and goodwill for accommodation. The solution to grievances has to be undertaken solely by the government and no assistance can be expected from the opposition or the major Tamil political party. If previous practice is an indicator, in solving the ethnic problem no bi party or multi party support from the opposition is likely to be rendered.

Tamils must equally reciprocate with demands that are reasonable and facilitate its implementation with patience. They brought anguish upon themselves by tacitly or impliedly aligning themselves with the terrorists for whom the Sambandan’s wing of TNA is largely instrumental. The Tamils will have to create a society with a more accommodating leadership prepared to offer a warm hand shake to the south after the elections. The Sinhala majority showed its goodwill with largeness originating from all strata’s in society when the refugees made the crossing from areas under terrorist control. The nationalistic Manel Mal Movement was among the first to run a special train carrying supplies to Vauniya on a goodwill mission.

That out stretched hand must be extended further but any such extension will be meaningless unless the Tamils show sufficient flexibility they are interested in safeguarding the territorial integrity of the country. Tamils must on their own suppress separatist tendencies in their districts to win the confidence of the majority.

Immediate solace must be offered through the present constitution without putting off the date of reckoning. It was a grave error to postpone in laying the foundation of amity until the elections are over in an effort to transact with the new parliamentarians. The next unreasonable postponement sought, will be to await the changes to the constitution. Delay is fatal and expecting the next batch of Tamil parliamentarians to be more conciliatory after an election would be wistful thinking and constitutional amendments will be a long and hazardous journey. Meanwhile the problems of the Tamils will continue to fester if it remains untouched and unattended. The route the government will have to take to solve the grievances will be a lonely avenue, since like in the war, the opposition will not desire to give the President another victory march in solving the ethnic issue. Mahinda Rajapakse is a leader on whom the Sinhala majority has laid its faith to the utmost and has the confidence that he will not sell the country since he overcame terrorism that none could tame.

The legitimate Tamil grievances can be listed briefly as follows:- (1) Language (2) Security (3) Land & Water (4) HSZ (5) Welfare of Children (6) Development (7) Resettlement and Rehabilitation (8) Cultural Advancement (9)Employment Opportunities on Merit (10) Speedy Social Progress in areas which were under terrorist control.

All these problems can be attended to under the present laws, the existing administrative powers and with presidential directives.

A dialogue directly with the Tamil inhabitants of the North and East is a necessity to understand the gravity of their grievances. The Colombian Tamils are more interested in their own social and economic progress which is not a priority, as they share problems common to the other communities. Muslim problems in the North and East have to be looked at in a separate chapter.

continued...
The 13th amendment was a midsummer nights dream conceived by India to bring the LTTE into mainstream politics through the provincial councils with the control of the North and East offered as bait to lure them. That experiment was a total failure and now after 30 years the provincial councils have proved to be a base to enrich another set of politicians in power.

This exercise will only confer power privileges and perquisites to the politicians of the North and East while the genuine grievances of the Tamils will remain intact. Those politicians of the North and East with their greed for gain will not attend to the grievances of the people, to keep them dissatisfied and disenchanted being more satisfying, so that the people could be mobilized and motivated to agitate again for more power for the politicians, which will give rise to separatist tendencies. Therefore it is more in the interest of the central government to attend to the grievances of the Tamil people directly because the solutions to problems will bring a lasting peace to the country which may not be the aspirations of those politicians in the North and East who were the proxy holders of the LTTE.

The Governments efforts to assuage the Tamils by undertaking development projects in the North and East proved to be totally unsuccessful as reflected in the election results. It is obvious that the real benefits have not accrued to the Tamil people in the provinces. In the present day lexicon of words, development is associated with commissions. In any event development is only an aspect of the many grievances and relying too heavily on a single front alone, turned out to be disastrous for the government .It is a basket of grievances which must be handled simultaneously.

The government must create a climate that the Tamils are confident they can live with dignity and comfort. Much of the opposition to this proposition will come from the parties that were once aligned to the terrorists. The president in his second term can act with more statesmen like outlook since he does not have to face another election. The Sinhala majority in the interest of the coming generations must ensure the ethnic problem is solved by not permitting terrorism to rise again; the final answer lies in finding solutions to the legitimate grievances of the Tamils. Now not Later.

END

My comment at The Seattle Times in response to the anti-SL article from Peter Mountford (written under the ID "NotoTamilTerrorism"):

A typical one-sided anti-Govt of Sri Lanka (GOSL) diatribe from a green western "journalist" who spends two weeks in Colombo (yes, Colombo is NOT Sri Lanka!) and assumes he is the authority on Sri Lanka!

What this feebly disguised pro-Tamil separatist harangue ignores is that the very GOSL that this so called reporter tries to portray as an unpopular dictatorship just won the Presidential elections by a landslide margin! wow! wow indeed!

Of course, the bitterness is there from the Tamil separatists, Tamil separatist sympathetic western govts, NGOs, church groups, media, etc. and that is understandable. They all had a concerted plan to dump this popular GOSL (the GOSL that militarily defeated the LTTE Tamil terrorists after 30 years of terrorism in SL) and install the pro-Tamil separatist opposition candidate, the corrupt, indisciplined, former army commander of Sri Lanka army, who was rejected by a hefty majority of Sri Lankans (and their opinion is what matters Peter, not you or your conveniently selected few "Colombians" opinion)!

The extent of half-truths and falsehood in this report is plainly evident when Peter states that the arrests of opposition individuals are all on trumped up charges. For instance, what he has not mentioned is that the opposition candidate Fonseka's son-in-law's mother was charged when U$575,000 IN CASH was found in a safety deposit box belonging to her and she could not account for it except to mumble it was money that belongs to Fonseka! wow! Peter I know well what would happen to me in NY if the FBI/Secret Service found that I had $575,000 in a safety deposit box belonging to me and I mumbled some excuse that it belonged to a Mosque!

Peter, clearly your job appears to be to malign Sri Lanka and the question is what is your motive? Is it that you are just another stooge of the US govt. that is putting pressure on Sri Lanka today to break it up along ethnic lines (which in 2009 tried its best to stop Sri Lanka from wiping out the LTTE Tamil terrorists) or is it that you have been handsomely rewarded by the Tamil separatist lobby which is known to be sitting on a "slush fund" of over $4Billion (the fund that was earlier earmarked for weapons purchases for the now-liquidated but then heinous LTTE Tamil terrorists)?

It is nothing new that LTTE funds have seeped into even the most unseemingly possible foreign and local entity that outwardly maintained a facade of neutrality and as such, this is a legitimate concern for Sri Lanka today as although the "war" is over in Sri Lanka, the war is not over as far as the violent Tamil separatists are concerned. You only have to look at a pro-Tamil separatist rally in the west today (including in the US) where you will see ample flags depicting the the snarling Tiger of the LTTE terrorist movement.

Gotabhaya not Fonseka responsible for killing of journalists and politicians says UTHR reports

According reports from University Teachers for Human Rights – Jaffna, it is Defence Secretary not Army Commander that was responsible for waves of killings that took place in Colombo.

UTHR report on February 2008 states, “The Defence Ministry, which functions as the property of an American citizen and the President’s brother, moved virtually to extort public funds from Parliament, to serve also as a source of fat commissions. And we are celebrating 60 years of independence from colonial rule. The apparatus of state-terror now in place has a political agenda going well beyond taming the Tigers. The killing of MP Raviraj discussed below shows poignantly the Government going down to the lowest depths in a bid to control MPs by terror. “

UTHR report goes furthermore exposing the real face of terror. “The killer apparatus, it was widely spoken and as the circumstances below strongly indicate, functioned under Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse. While the principal details below are from one trusted source, important ties have been confirmed by information from other
independent sources, such as Pillayan’s relationship to the intelligence operative Wasantha and their PNM connections. Two important intelligence operatives who deal closely with Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse (GR) are Kamaldeen from the Navy based in Trincomalee and Commanding Officer Tennekoon, of the Army from the
Gemunu Watch, based in Welikanda. The latter has rank probably of major or above. Dealing with and directing killer operatives from the Karuna (Pillayan) group and EPDP are Sampath, ex-naval intelligence, who is under Kamaldeen and Wasantha who is under Tennekoon. Sources in Batticaloa have linked Pillayan with Wasantha and the PNM has also been mentioned to us in this connection,” according to UTHR report on February 2008.

“We may describe the terror apparatus as having three levels. At the lowest are cadres from the Karuna group, operatives from the EPDP, Muslim paramilitary elements and deserters from the LTTE. The second comprises cadres from the JHU, PNM and the intelligence services, all dealing with persons from the third layer. The topmost layer comprises the State, represented by the Defence Ministry and especially the Defence Secretary, dealing with the second, and occasionally with the third, usually through the second. They try to negotiate boundaries, relations and tensions between the second.”

It also added that “The circumstances above point to Gotabhaya Rajapakse as ultimately the man who initiated the killing of Raviraj. The immediate purpose appears to have been the silencing of the Civil Monitoring Committee, whose reports on abductions, killings and extortion by Gotabhaya’s covert outfits, created a huge stink. It is hard to accept that the President who delegated the running of the Defence Ministry to his younger brother and was personally a patron of Ven. M was not party to what was going on. He has a good deal of explaining to do.

Even worse, no one could accuse Gotabhaya of being secretive. The country as a whole had a good sense of what was going on. People were being targeted and killed and were disappearing after abduction, the total now running into thousands, by killers closely linked to the Defence Ministry. Also killed have been a number of media workers.
When the President persists in maintaining as defence secretary the very man who threatened the woman editor of a leading newspaper with the Karuna group and one of her staff with elimination, he has no real defence against the worst sort of allegations.”

Reflecting between elections in Sri Lanka

Incumbent President Rajapakse has made it clear he favors economic growth over the well-being of his populace
When I asked a friend in Sri Lanka what she thought of the presidential election and its aftermath, she said with exasperation, “The election was a joke. These politics are a joke.”

Another friend said, “At least Sri Lankans are again beginning to laugh and take their politicians less seriously.”

Whether or not the latter comment may be true, the recent politics and events in Sri Lanka are no laughing matter. As concerned individuals, we must critically examine the presidential election and its aftermath at this moment in order to press for restoring justice, dignity and democracy for all inhabitants of Sri Lanka.

Since the war’s end in May 2009, there has been little relief for Sri Lankans, and, in particular, for those civilians who have been uprooted and displaced by the protracted civil conflict. Internally displaced persons (IDPs) are still being held without land rights, homes or the freedom to move freely within the country’s borders. Muslims, expelled from Jaffna peninsula by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in 1990, have yet to secure unified support from Sri Lanka’s politicians to return homes.

During the conflict, thousands of Up-Country Tamils living and working on the tea and rubber plantations were chased out of their homes during a series of anti-Tamil riots. Today, many of the individuals remaining in the postwar IDP camps are in fact Up-Country Tamils who — displaced twice and thrice over the past decades — have no home to return to.

In the months before the presidential election, the widening space for dissent gave hopeful indication that Sri Lanka’s politicians might adequately address minority grievances and develop long-lasting strategies for reconciliation. Nevertheless, the election was marred by, as election monitoring centers report, 900 instances of violence, forms of corruption and blatant abuse of public funds for private interests.

Furthermore, the post-election arrest and detainment of retired General Sarath Fonseka has distracted politicians from pressing issues such as the resettlement of IDPs and the need for a far-reaching political solution.

In the last week, the opposition alliance has split, and Sarath Fonseka, while detained, has left the United National Party (UNP)-led alliance and started a new alliance called the Democratic National Alliance (DNA). This fracture and shift may suggest yet another victory for Rajapakse’s governing coalition in the Parliamentary elections, which are set to take place on April 8.

With the recent announcement that the detained Fonseka will contest in the April elections, voters may face the real possibility of continued violence and the residual effects of political elitism that plagued the presidential election.

tbc..

Jay said...

..continued...

This climate of political uncertainty has been further fueled by the increased militarization of post-war civil society. Outspoken journalists and activists are still regularly abducted and detained under the emergency regulations, without consistent or trustworthy follow-up investigation. Paramilitaries and political groups such as the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) in the North and East are still armed in a time of so-called “peace.”

Even though President Mahinda Rajapakse declared the defeat of terrorism nearly nine months ago, the Prevention of Terrorism Act is still in place, and civilians displaced from the High Security Zones (HSZ) in the North and East are still unable to return to their homes.

Given these conditions of exception, the incumbent President Rajapakse has made it clear that economic investment and growth are more important than guaranteeing dignity and safety for Sri Lankan civilians. By placing the question of a political solution on the backburner, his decisions suggest that he favors centralized executive power and refuses to embrace and implement more devolved forms of power sharing throughout the country.

As Sri Lanka is at a critical juncture in its post-war history, its leaders and constituents need more nuanced ways to justly engage all members of the country’s polity. To do this would involve immediate demilitarization of civil society, decentralization of executive and state powers, and an opening of space for dissenting voices — not only for those in the opposition but also for those marginalized minorities of ethnicity, caste, class and gender.

For some Sri Lankans, the current political events may be laughable. And given the end of the LTTE, perhaps, these political events are perceived by some as less serious than those of the former, conflict-ridden Sri Lanka.

But for those progressives who actively seek long-lasting political reform and sustainable modes of civic participation, the election and its aftermath are leaving a sour taste. Until Sri Lanka’s leaders can question the legitimacy and transparency of their own politics and form solidarities on the grounds of dignity and justice for all, Sri Lankan civilians will not be able to reassemble their lives and heal their trust in the country’s democratic political system.

ha ha ha...so Peter you were allowed only "a limited number of words" herein and you saw it fit to use it all in a one-sided attack against the Govt. of Sri Lanka?

wow! how coincidental that you did not spare a few words of that allotment to say that some of the arrests of opposition entities appeared to be based on gross violations the country's anti-terrorist, anti-moneylaundering laws such as when opposition candidate Fonseka's son-in-law's mother was charged (the case you note in your anti-SL diatribe) when the police opened her safety deposit boxes (in her presence and with cameras rolling) and found U$575,000 IN CASH and all what she could mumble to the police was that the money really belonged to opposition candidate Fonseka!

Peter, I see you are digging yourself into a deeper hole every time you try to justify your one-sided anti-SL harangue.

So all the Sinhalese you met in Colombo who were overwhelmingly anti-GOSL uh? Peter, I hate to embarrass you, but must state that there is something funny about that claim. That is, the recent elections gave the incumbent GOSL President nearly 60% of "thumbs-up" vote from the Sinhela vote-block in the nation, but yet you failed to find any Sinhela who had an entirely pro-GOSL, i.e. an opposing views to what you published herein? Additionally, can you not see the the number of entirely pro-GOSL Sinhelas who are writing here in deep protest at your falsehood? So, how is it statistically possible that you met only Sinhelas who are anti-GOSL? wow! wow indeed! I am now wondering how did I miss THAT statistics lesson in college?

Peter, please read my lips: Sri Lanka belongs to Sri Lankans and NOT to you. Sri Lankans have freely exercised their universal franchise since 1950 and they will continue to do so by expressing their pleasure/displeasure at elections time to vote-in/vote-out Sri Lankan leaders of their choosing and you being a US citizen, no Peter you have no right to interfere in that process by writing untruths that disregard the overwhelming Sri Lankans' will, especially when those untruths are in favor of the heinous Tamil separatist terrorists' agenda.

Today the overwhelming Sri Lankans are with their government, the government that finally eradicated horrific LTTE Tamil Terrorism after 30 years of mass death and destruction. No western busy-body, hypocritical (yeah, do we know how many Afghan civilians died this week in US drone attacks? How about an article about that?) bottom-pile, journalist-wannabe is going to change that - Guaranteed!

The funny thing is these very journalists, including the ones I have met at private social functions in Europe, tell how fortunate they are that they "fast tracked" their seemingly impossible immigration to a western country by "hook or by crook" as they term it!

Not only they got to jump the immigration queues, today they are living a good lifestyle with all the dole-outs (free near-luxurious apartment, food allowance, travel allowance, etc.) from the west when the west admits someone as a "political refugee" !!!

If only you could see their laughter at how they beat the system and socked it back to you "white gullibles" (as they call you) !!!

So the unholy honeymoon between Gonseka+JVP and the UriNePee is over now for sure.

RW’s mouthpiece (Sunday Times) published the following, basically publicly cutting loose from the sucker Gonseka who RW used very craftily at the recent PE (like other gullible ex-military have been used in the past by the UriNePee).

This spells the ETERNAL DOOM for this idiotic Gonseka and he will rot in prison and die there too eventually.

Serves the traitorous whoredog right.

The UNF has now together distanced itself from the former Army Commander and its one-time ally, the JVP. It reflected the pithy Sinhala proverb that spoke about kissing the hand that cannot be cut off.

There were several reasons. Main among them is the fact that the political battle lines were clearly defined when the UNP, the main constituent partner of the UNF decided that the Elephant would be its symbol. Added to that were the periodic revelations following CID investigations about allegations of corruption, violations of exchange control regulations and other serious charges.

These have badly dented retired Gen. Fonseka's credibility, particularly among those who voted for him at the Presidential poll, and especially those who voted to protest corruption under the present dispensation. He had first denied some of them but they later turned out to be correct. The fact that his son-in-law Danuna Tillekeratne is a fugitive from justice has not helped him either.
With more revelations to come, there is little doubt, the image of retired Gen. Fonseka as a soldier who took to politics to battle corruption is fast receding. Denials by him of involvement by family members have been proved wrong and he has to answer questions on how he inherited foreign funds. CID detectives probing the deposits of more than Rs 75 million (including US $ 527,000) are to question him after revelations that he was the recipient. ]

Sure also look the END of any hopes the whoredogs in LTTE Tamileelam Inc. had of dumping MR GOSL at the GE and placing their darling RW Ponnaya in the PM's chair with a parliamentary majority!

There goes the Facebook

"Sri Lankan Intelligence Infiltrates Facebook – Gota behind the move

EXCLUSIVE

By Our Correspondent in Colombo

(February 24, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) According to informed sources within Sri Lankan intelligence, Sri lankan intelligence officials are now infiltrating on facebook to collect information on supporters of Sarath Fonseka and critics of Mahinda Rajapakse.

The idea of facebook infiltration is a brainchild of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse to collect information on foreign LTTE suspects in the past. Now Defence Secretary had given orders to redirect this project to collect information on dissenting groups including supporters of Gen. Fonseka and Ranil Wicramasighne.

These facebook stalker teams consists of Army Intelligence officers and officers from N.I.B, our source revealed. These operatives pose as attractive females to unsuspecting facebook users and add them as friends. Once they befriend the victim, they collect their information and add them to their database.

Our legal commentators claim that this operation is a serious threat to the online privacy in Sri Lanka. They also urged the Sri Lankan facebook users to exercise cautions when using facebook."

When I was in SL late last year, through a “connection” I was able to go to a “Ranaviru” house in Anuradhapura on my way back from Trinco.

It was known as a Ranaviru house as all 3 boys from that house had joined the SLDF, 2 in the SLA and one in SLN. One SLA had died and the other in the SLN was wounded in a sea-battle with “sea tigers” and was still recovering in SLN hospital in Colombo when I visited them in Anu.

The survivor of the SLA SF told me a few things that took me by sheer shock as the stories told of sheer horror of the LTTE attacks and the even greater valor of his platoon when counter attacking those horrors from the LTTE whores.

This was a guy who, despite strict regulations to the contrary, used to go lying flat next to the gun/turret of the T-55/T69 MBTs in Vanni and he was one who would “take out” LTTE whores when they would dash out of bushes with grenades in hand or RPGs cocked from the flanks or “low diagonals” as known in the jargon.

In essence, he was covering the “blind spots” of the MBTs by jumping on them and virtually sleeping on the hot metal body with his QBU-88 (T-88 sniper rifle from China) when the MBT woud go through the Vanni bush and cherry pick the LTTE whorebitches/dogs (and boy, did he every do that to glory per his accounts that were later collaborated unofficially to me by his CO!)

However, it was not long before this village-lad-braveheart fell off the MBT and his boot lace in one foot got caught in the tracks of the MBT and that almost squashed him as he found he was being dragging into the MBT tracks. However, by rolling out with all his might, he saved his life (minus one boot and two toes of his one feet).

The bottom line is this was a poor village lad and if you had seen his house in Anu (his parents’ house really) you would have been sad. I, in my own small way, then pledged to him that I will sponsor his future children, irrespective of how many they will be, until I am happy to see them through University education.

Now he is getting married soon to a lassy from Anu and I just got the email telling me so through a friend of his in Colombo. I will, most certainly, be going to Anu for his wedding soon as I feel I am privileged to know this fine young, brave Motherlanka’s proud son who did so much for Motherlanka that I will never ever be able to do.

This "Parrot" is really a LTTE hardcore hiding here with a few lines now and then in Sinhala that he throws in as a cover up. Patriots, do not be misled by this Mother-arsefucker.

parrot,

i know i'm wasting my time bcos you just repeat BS like a parrot!!!

we don't worship anyone; certainly not MR.

our interest is in SL. if ANYONE does the right thing by SL, we support him/her. there are shortcomings, weaknesses, etc. that is secondary (unless it screws with the primary objective).

another problem. some times there can be 2 or more COMPETING objectives.

e.g. full fledged media freedom vs national security

in these cases we have to PRIORITIZE.

one will be prioritized at the expense of the other based on LONG TERM national interests.

SL cannot afford to have european or US style media freedom. SL should have what is suitable to it.

singapore+ is a good benchmark for SL. there is actually very little media freedom in singapore although SL tries to copy everything singaporean. but we need a bit more. that's why it should be singapore+.

when singapore adopted these "draconian" policies according to western BSs, it stuck to its policies and priorities. now very few complain about it. no point complaining bcos NOTHING happens!!!

IF SL sticks to this national security over singapore plus media freedom policy, soon the IC will forget it after shouting for nothing.

e.g. kissing in public

although in ALL developed democracies this is PERFECTLY LEGAL and ACCEPTED, it is illegal in SL law.

SL needs a level of democracy judged by its requirements. not by any outside idiots' requirements.

what;s really interesting to see here is that true blue super patriots of SL are actually no residing in SL but those who are living in other countries :)
Imagine that?
had we had this kinda super power patriotic force during the war times, we could have ended lpte mofos in a couple of days if not hours!

DefenceWire team
you guys did a brilliant job during war time. seems like just like with SF, post war neo patriotism has taken shots at you guys also :)
keep up the good work and not everybody has to agree with the populist view!
Unlike Sri Lanka, www still has some democracy

So, in your Pakisland, you don't pay enough for poor soldiers live with dignity, however you let big generals and politicians drive multi million rupee SUVs.

Nice to be a patriot in Pakisland.
