57 gets a new Brigade

Army Commander Lt. General Sarath Fonseka has rewarded his best General by making him the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army's largest Offensive Division, the 57 Division.

Major General Jagath "Chula" Dias of Gajaba Regiment is now the Commander of 10,000 troops in a single Army Division following the Commander's decision to raise the 574 Brigade. The 574 comprises of 2,500 fresh troops under the able leadership of Lt. Colonel Senaka Wijesooriya, another battle hardened officer.

The 57 Division has borne the brunt of the operations so far having marched through areas considered impossible to capture, including Madhu, Tunukkai, Mallavi, Uylankulam, Akkarayan and soon, Kilinochchi and Mankulam.

The 57 has killed the largest number of LTTE cadres in operations so far and gone head on into battle with the LTTE's so-called elites from Charles Anthony to Ratha Regiments. It had only one setback at Akkarayankulam where it lost 55 men in fierce fighting but had the Charles Anthony and Ratha Regiments running with its tail between its legs on all other occasions.

In July this year, the 57 Division, teaming up with Special Forces units killed close to 100 Charles Anthony unit cadres at Vavunikulam. 'Lt. Col' Pallavan, the overall Commander of the Charles Anthony unit and Anbu, the local area leader were among those killed in the attack. A rescue mission led by Bhanu, Lawrence and Lakshman were severely beaten back.

The capture or Kilinochchi will be a fitting tribute to Chula Dias, having served in the Kilinochchi SLA Garrison and Kokavil Detachment as a young officer in the 1980s and the 90s.

The 574 is the first indicator of the Army's decision to increase troop strength in existing Offensive Divisions instead of raising new Divisions. It is only fitting that the first recipient of this expansion was General Chula Dias. The induction of the 574 and its fresh troops will be a relief to troops fighting day and night, sunshine or rain in the frontlines.

Meanwhile in the Weli Oya sector, the 59 is now facing a Tiger trenchine which we reported was under construction several weeks ago. The trenchline goes from the northern shore of the Tannimurippu Tank to Nayaru Lagoon.

In a way, this commitment of troops by the LTTE is a blessing as the areas lying ahead of the trench is mostly open terrain. It will provide the SLA an opportunity to kill as many LTTE cadres as they possibly could before stepping into the open terrain ahead. Perhaps this justifies the Commander's decision to slow down the pace of the operations in Weli Oya.

In other news, the SLAF claimed it bombed three vital locations in Kilinochchi yesterday including an LTTE administrative base. SLAF sources have confirmed direct hits on all three targets but the exact damage caused to the Tigers is unclear.

I know some people might disagree,
But let me say Im in Bangladesh where the population is 22 Crore and the military is 2 crore in size, so there is a good ratio, although the military has political favour, I thnk that with a population of 16 Million in Sri Lanka, we needto minimum have 100,000 in the army, forget about this tiger war, but on a basis on civilians per soldier, there should be a larger military force to counter matters of national security, right now with the new recruites its at about 70,000 up, but we need that number of 100,000.

Dear Sam,

glad you liked the pic....the Idea was mine but I got my young nephew to do it in matter of hours. While its got a funny side to it, I just want to show how easy it is to create such group photo using Photoshop...mind you this was done in hurry....

I have some more ideas...if there is audience for such humor I will keep em coming.

Cheers

Dear Rana,

Fully agree with you when you say........."Soory mate, I am not a guy to say everything is rosy or alright with this current regime just b'cause they are doing very well in the war front".........

At this point in time the priority should be to defeat the common enemy which is the LTTE and their benefactor the DiAssPora.

Its not the time to do clean up operations while the war is ongoing.

Sri Lanka will never get this "right mix" or the context again.
Internal Factors
a) Political leadership with balls to take a stand and then unwaveringly pursue it.
b) 3 Commanders (SLA,SLAF & SLN) who are fit for the purpose...their actions speaks volumes.....
c) Motivated SLDF
d) Recent losses of LTTE, both logistical, geographical and leadership wise
External
a) Conducive IC environment thanks to Bin Ladens 9/11...terrorism suddenly became a global phenominon
b) Resulting Intel, logistical and know-how support from the Friendly Nations
c) India's determination not to support the Terrorist group responsible for Rajive G's death...and there are bigger things too
d) Exposure of LTTE's nefarious activities like, Credit card scams, gun running, human smuggling, money laundering to name a few...IC had finally realized the true colours of the Freedom Fighters.

And there are more.

First lets get the bloody terrorist and then we can clean up our own act....unfortunately looking back, Sri Lanka had never dealt with its corrupt politicians.....

Sri Lanka, we have never had it so better....and I hope we will not loose this opportunity....

All patriotic Sri Lankans should lend their support irrespective of their political believes, cast creed etc....

Wish you all luck

dear N

Well said mate....

If a Eelam was created based on the Logic put forward by the Tamil Racists....then the world will have to increase its number of independent countries from 195 or so to about 350 something....

To name a few
1. Within Canda, a new country call Quebeca!
2. United Kingdom will be not so united any more....about 2 new countries from their
3. Need I talk about India...there will be new countries to fill the Solar System
4. From Austrailia will come Aboriginia or shall we say DreamTimeia
5. How about Spain....may be Basquilia ....
And the list will go on...

United Nations assembly will have to be hosted like Olympics....every 4 years.

Cheers

E-news Article: http://www.lankaenews.com/English/news.php?id=6476

When the man who beat the death says "I strongly believe that this country belongs to the Sinhalese but..." So when our/ international uneducated journalist hear this, it becomes a title of an e-news article as "This is the country of Sinhalese, says Army Commander".. When it is asked from our uneducated/ idiotic/ canny/ opportunistic/ rural (he probable does not know what exactly Army Commander said) politician it became that “it was not the position of the government and the country belonged to all communities who have equal rights”

First these journalist took the parts they wanted from the commander’s comments and created stories/ questions around it. In the name of god, Allah, your mother, your father, your country (you know why I didn’t touch Buddhism here, didn’t you??) who can put this country down like this while breathing the air of that country, walking on that lovely soil, and eating the foods grown in that country, of which our ancestor fought under an one flag for centuries against enemies.. Man… I cannot live here anymore… I need to go back, go back to the period of Dutugamunu, Vijayabahu, or Prakramabahu.. Common kings, I know you all have gone and born in US now, but this is the right time to come back, we need you now the most….

Second to politicians, that spoke person just take the easy route. But I am telling you, do not ever put the commander down.. you can play your word game any way you want, but if it is by putting the commander down.. stop it!! in the name of this country.. He, who beat the death, truly loves this country.. in fact he didn’t say that this country *only* belong to Sinhalese, what he said was, it is the duty of Sinhalese (being the majority) to protect and drive this nation in the right direction.. he continued to explain his standing further, but these journalist get it the way they want.. How unfortunate we are..

To ALL, don’t you understand that you can only have one captain for a SHIP?????????? Let one take the lead, all others need to support him, it does not necessarily have to be the way you like, to reach a land..

You belive or not, most of the tamil people in Tamil Eelam and around the world think that two countries and two languages is the wayout for this all problem.

Do we have any alternative for this? You would say that In Colombo all communities lives happily. If most of the Tamil people were ever given chance to experess their view and say we are happy living in Colombo, then there wont be a war beteewn us. You as Sinhalese can not say that they are happy.

By insulting each other, we are not going to contribute anything for our community, instead make the gap betwen us wider and wider.

Dont insult anybody or their dream. When you call Eelam as --- we call Sri Lanka as ----. What we are going to achive by hurting each others valus and dreams.

I know from my friends when Mandaithivu SLA base was attacked by LTTE in 1995, LTTE leader sent a special team to save the statue of Lt Gen Kopekaduva and others who are killed by the same LTTE.

You may have similar examples. You may share those with us. So long as we think we have the right to achieve what we want we will continue. You may have similar goals.

Hi.. General Sarath Fonseka said this time is the last chance Swarnam, Theepan, Bhanu, etc.. and even Nadeshame to Surender with carders. Very Sorry to say Puttu Ammo & Pakabharan have No Chance from General. Why General Fonseka you give chance to any Terrorist.. Can you remember they tried to Blast You.. You know they killed 70,000 Sri Lankans.. But That's the crucial Blast Pakabharan ever did.. That's the Blast crossed the Red Lines of Mahinda.. Wowwwwww.......... Pakabharan You have left only Two Months to Kill Sri Lankans... Am I correct....?

You have a lot of leverage with LTTE. They can come and negotiate a package for Tamils in the north in return for weapons. All they have to say is they give up the notion of separate state.

So its not that you don't have alternatives, you do.
