Army enters Kilinochchi as Tigers withdraw suddenly
In a sudden and dramatic development the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) began withdrawing from the heavily fortified northern town of Kilinochchi while soldiers of the Sri Lankan armed forces started moving in cautiously into the town area.
The partial withdrawal strengthened expectations that the LTTE had started withdrawing from Kilinochchi town.
This however was not to be and it is now surmised that the withdrawal was partal and temporary caused mainly by the heavy rains,gale and floods.
The Government’s plans to hoist the national flag in Kilinochchi town on Nov 27th 2008 and for President Mahinda Rajapakse to announce the capture of Kilinochchi in an address to the nation also came to naught.
Selected journalists who were to be taken to Kilinochchi were also disappointed.
A top defence official told a foreign journalist “The rains have spoiled our party”.
According to authoritative sources the LTTE had begun vacating certain areas of Kilinochchi during the night of Tuesday November 25th.
This was after soldiers of 57 – 2 brigade entered the general area of Kilinochchi town near the Bus depot junction.
The soldiers had earlier broken out from Akkarayankulam and reached Konavil junction. Thereafter the troops had reached Puthumurippukulam and proceeded via the tank bund to reach Kanagapuram and then moved towards the Bus depot junction.
Simultaneously troops from 58 division had fought their way through Paambukaman from Kunchuparanthan area and moved towards Paranthan junction. Paranthan is 4 miles to the north of Kilinochchi.
Once troops began entering Kilinochchi town LTTE cadres had begun withdrawing in some sections .
Mortar fire by the LTTE had begun decreasing gradually with all fire ceasing by the afternoon.
Troops however were planning to move into Kilinochchi town interior cautiously.
The idea was to “envelope” the town peripherally instead of plunging in right away.
The LTTE withdrawal had made the army suspicious of an ulterior motive . So troops were not rushing in but commenced treading warily.
Small groups of soldiers began moving around cautiously within Kilinochchi town precincts.
A possible counter – strike by the LTTE was also not ruled out.
Heavy rains and flash floods had hindred both the army and LTTE in fighting.
It is also believed that the LTTE withdrawal from certain areas of Kilinochchi town and environs was only temporary due to adverse weather conditions.
Three days of torrential rain may have played a part as all tiger defensive positions have been flooded.
The tigers were also finding it difficult to move their mortars and heavy artillery.
Many LTTE bunkers and firing positions were flooded or washed away.
Some sections of the Army feel that the tigers would return to former positions after weather conditions improve.
Incessant rain resulting in Kilinochchi town being flooded has restricted troop movement and hampered the
Army’s plans to move into the town.
Soldiers of the 58 and 57 divisions moved towards the general area of Kilinochchi from three directions and later spread out widely to several positions on the outskirts.
The LTTE had constructed an “L” shaped earth bund extending from Paranthan – Pooneryn road to the South of Kilinochchi town.
The army however succeeded in breaching the bund in seven different locations.
According to informed sources the army was getting ready for the long haul as they expected the LTTE to defend fiercely .
The LTTE lost “Col” Stanley who was in charge of tiger defences along the Paranthan – Pooneryn road in the fighting along with around 150 tiger cadres.
Meanwhile Defence affairs spokesman and cabinet minister Keheliya Rambukwella told journalists in Colombo that the “fall of Kilinochchi was imminent”.

Troops are in Kili and are dominating most of the areas in town. Special Forces and other small teams entered the town about a week ago. Even though are troops are dominating the area, they will not declare it as liberated until they make sure that the entire area is cleared. This info is confirmed by reliable sources.

I am just thinking these days about the best options that LTTE has to recover from the current situ. We all know that a military fight back is nearly impossible for LTTE. But just think of a LTTE’s suicidal plan to give up killi and capturing Jaffna..
So giving up killi is not a big problem (Bairaha and Nirvindran to confirm), but how feasible it is to capture Jaffna, given that LTTE is ready to use their full strength??
Let's assume that they have enough homemade vessels (over 100) to transfer a group of carders through East Sea up to north of Jaffna and then move all their heavy weapons up to elephant pass. Then start an attack from both side while aggressively moving up from elephant pass.. How practical an attack like this?? What do you all think??
If they can do that it will put them in a better position to survive little longer, as well as open a new channel to link with south India too….
If we take Killi then LTTE has to bounce back if they are to survive, so we not only need to have plans to capture killi but also have a counter attack for an strategic withdrawal (A withdrawal will put shame on LTTE for sure but it is always better for LTTE than getting defeated for ever) from killi..

If you look at those so called commandos, do they look like elite forces? Compare that to our STF & Commandos.

I was surprised that in NDTV they showed where exactly the airborne commandos were dropped in the Jewish buildings. By looking at that one could exactly say how many were dropped to each building and to where they were dropped. Anybody watching from outside could pas the information to attackers easily. It will not work. After Pooneryn was captured and now with the SLA at Kilinochchi, the LTTE's option to attack Jaffna basically crumbled.
In 2000 when the SLA was all but shattered, the LTTE conducted its main attack into Jaffna through Pooneryn while launching a secondary effort from Elephant Pass to pin down the 55 and 53 Divisions (and what was left of the 54 Division). It is important to note that even with the SLA at its weakest, the LTTE was not able to take Jaffna, although it came close.
Right now the LTTE will not be able to conduct a main assault from Elephant Pass because the SLA is right at its rear in Kilinochchi. A land attack from Elephant Pass would fail in any case because the terrain is too narrow w/o maneuver space. LTTE tried in 2000 and 2006 to attack from EPS and failed both times.
At this point, a massive counteroffensive which the LTTE supporters were babbling about will probably not result in permanent gains in territory, but it would result in more or less permanent losses in cadre.
The only viable course of action is for the Tigers to hunker down in Mullaitivu jungles and fight a delaying war until the economy crashes sometime next year.
If the "patriots" here want to make themselves useful, instead of offering non-expert military advice (which is pointless as the military is doing well) and advise Mahinda how to cut non-essential spending to delay the economic meltdown.

Guys about kili captured thing.. defencewire gives information after he can verfy stuff even if he was aware that killi was under SLA. That is something he must do since this webspace is very popular now. What if, he also said kili captured on 26th but gov has not declared it yet. there would be 100 people jumping on him.
But SF in LNP has no such obligation. He might say whats happens at that moment but that information is totally unconfirmed. (but usually relaible)

“Col” Sornam (some reports said he was injured or dead) lit the flame at Mulliyavalai GH cemetery while Keerthi did so at Viswamadhu. “Col” Jeyam did so at Oddusuddan while sea Tiger special commander Soosai paid homage at sea to all sea – Tigers who perished at sea. The woman sea – Tiger special commander Poorani and deputy sea-Tiger commander Vinayagam lit the flames in Alambil and Uduthurai respectively.
LTTE finance chief Thamilkumaran, “Sencholai” orphanage co-ordinator Sudarmahal, Charles Anthony division special commander Vimal, and Military college chief instructor Aathavan, lit the flames in Puthukkudiyiruppu,Vattakkachchi,Kandawalai and Udayarkaddu GH cemeteries respectively.
There are also special memorial monuments for cadres from Batticaloa – Amparai districts, Imran – Pandian infantry brigade and “Kutty Sri” mortar units. The flames in these places were lit by Jeyanthan brigade chief Bhavaan,Kilinochchi district military chief Velavan and Kuttysri unit chief Kalaichelvan respectively.//

I don't know, how far this is true, but over the history DBS has proven his information is accurate.
I also know from Yala to Ampara, Ampara to Welioya is a dense jungle. It is not easy to locate and destroy small terra units operating in those bushes.

I sympathise with our Indian friends and agree whole heartedly with them. A Proposal for all the patriots
We discuss various matters in DW and DN, some of them are very sensitive in nature. Since DW and DN are open for public, any body can read them.

Thanks for the kind note. It was Defence Column's thought first. I just did a quick condition assessment based on the satellite imagery. I am very glad that GR and SF is aware of the possibilities. I hope that MOD has already contacted the director of irrigationa to assess the threat based on hydrological factors such the tank capacity and topology. Given the fact that the soil is already saturated, all the water can flood Kilinochchi within the terrorist built earth bund. Relatively flat terrain will make water to recede very slow. Nevertheless, we are together with the forces in saving our motherland from LTTE terrorists.

If you replace "India" and "Indians" by "Sri Lanka" and "Sri Lankans", you will see that they mirror the agony of our own people due to terrorism initiated and supported by India, and by Indians, in Sri Lanka. Note in particular the unwillingness of the author to condone any further terrorist mayhem in India, regardless of the justifications advanced by the perpetrators.
My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Indian people in their hour of grief. It would be nice, however, if they recognize at least now, that we Sri Lankans deserve, and yearn for, the same sympathy and understanding from India!

Mumbai: A Price too High?

I shall not waste time by giving details about the Mumbai horror that still continues as I write this. Like you, I await familiar media headlines: appeals to communal harmony and to stay calm by our so called ‘leaders’; Mumbai’s resilience and how quickly life returns to ‘normalcy’ in the city; how our state and society endures such attacks bravely and ‘defeats’ the aims of terrorists; how we need to stand together as a ‘nation’ etc. Like you, I too am disgusted and there is seething anger, rage rather, at this blatant attack on my people and my nation. I feel shaken, violated and have to stifle my screams (being far away from the country at this time!). There have been attacks before, but this one has sent a strong message that we are perhaps not a failed state as yet, but a failed nation, maybe yes.
This time, let us recount the successes of this terrorist operation/war. Tourists and foreigners have been attacked in an unprecedented manner sending a message of how vulnerable our country is. We cannot protect our citizens, we cannot protect our visitors. Our premier hotels and heritage sites have been attacked, again sending a message that we are vulnerable in the most high profile and ‘secure’ of places. The indiscriminate firing coordinated along with blasts and grenade attacks and hostage taking shows we have nothing like an intelligence system, no law and order and that anarchy and chaos can be easily unleashed by a band of amateur but committed youth. A lot of planning has gone into it, and clearly arms, ammunitions and committed cadres have made this a successful terrorist operation/war. I dread to think of how the perpetrators, planners and patrons might be laughing at this very hour at our expense. This is not even a terrorist attack but an open war which has resulted in unprecedented mobilisation of our security forces; has brutally exposed the weaknesses of our security system, our intelligence services and our crisis management. We are all clueless as to what is exactly going on as fires continue to ablaze in the two hotels (Taj and Oberoi) and we still do not know how many people have died, are held hostage and how many terrorists have carried this out or are still roaming freely in the city.
If the neighbouring state is involved (as the PM has suggested), they have proved to us that they can have our entire security machinery – police, army, navy, air force, NSG, RAF, all engaged in a war within our own territory, and bring the country to its knees. They have caused so much damage that it will take a while to just recover to even think of the future course of action. They have proved that a military attack is not necessary and a group of armed and committed men can take on our security forces and damage our morale and spirit while making a mockery of our national security apparatus. If these are indeed the jihadi terrorists, motivated by a fanatical and narrow understanding of their religion, and if their aim is to carry out jihad in India, as price the country has to pay for having the second largest Muslim community in the world, albeit as minorities, they too seem to have succeeded in getting their message across. They are prepared to die for their religion, they are prepared to kill and be killed in this ‘war of civilisations’. Reports have started trickling in that some of the arrested terrorists are from Pakistan, but if these are also people from our own country avenging Gujarat, Babri Masjid demolition or avenging the ill treatment of their people or their community especially in Kashmir, I am afraid they too are having the last laugh. They have proved that ‘revenge’ can be well planned and that they will not stop at anything.
Terror experts have always told us terrorism is a strategy or even tactics towards some given ends. Groups or individuals indulge in terrorism because there are political motivations, and that there are always ‘root causes’ behind such acts of terror. We have had hostage crises, political assassinations, sniper and grenade attacks and bomb blasts in the past where groups have made political demands. But with the kind of terror we have seen in the last few years in India, the epoch of which is visible in Mumbai, we are forced to claim that terrorism, seems to be an end in itself. The terrorists do not warn us or tell us what they want, what they are here for, and where we might have failed them for them to resort to such mayhem and mindless violence. If terrorism has no reason and logic and no ‘root causes’, if the terrorists carry out these operations to cause destruction, if we are all enemies without any discrimination, if the innocent citizens are to pay the price for perceived atrocities of the state, it is time to do away with the traditional definitions of terrorism and recognise that this terror is there simply for destruction, to destroy and destabilise the country and to inflict psychological damage on us, the ‘enemies’. We did not wish to be ‘enemies’, but since we have been constructed that way, should not we take our roles as ‘enemies’ a bit more seriously? I cannot speak the language of peace and love anymore. If the war is forced upon us, we will have to accept it. And since our state is too inept to handle it on our behalf, let us debate ways in which we can all participate in this ‘war’, through words, wisdom or actions.
