The most decisive battle for Paranthan and Kilinochchi has now commenced. Around 5.30am today, the 57 and 58 Divisions launched a simultaneous attack on the "L" shaped LTTE bund surrounding Paranthan and Pooneryn.
These were some of the fiercest fights in recent times. While the attack on Paranthan and Kilinochchi continued, the 53 Division made an abortive bid to advance in Kilali but lost around 30 men with 10 bodies falling into the hands of the LTTE.
Close to 100 soldiers were killed and 300 others were injured in all three operations. 12 bodies were captured by LTTE in Kilinochchi (MIA). Many of the injuries to the Army were in the p3 category. The LTTE also lost around 150 cadres. Troops are now in control of the LTTE bunkerline and bund at many locations.
LTTE launched wave after wave of attacks using MPMGs and even 23mm and 30mm HMGs but the troops remained unmoved and have not let go of the bund. The 57 Division took the brunt of the LTTE counter attacks facing 11 attacks so far. Troops from SR, CLI, GW and GR fought valiantly.
The Army altogether lost 42 bodies, which were declared MIA. Some of these bodies, including those of the LTTE can be observed just ahead of the captured areas. Fighting will resume again with the first light.

Even though the numbers from yesterday are unexpectedly high, casualties were expected at this phase of the war. For LTTE this is the Do or Die battle. It is a matter of time, before the capture of Killi, Parnathan. EP and Mullative. However, the question is when and at what cost? Except the pressure from India, there is no hurry to finish this off. A massive forward march in to the FDLs will obviously cause high casualties in the SLA. The right approach may be to go for the kill, small numbers, and keep on putting pressure on the enemy, as we did earlier. Why not wait until TF IV and V are ready. It is better to avoid close encounters like what we had yesterday. We should use the tanks, MBLs, HMGs, MPMGs more often than men. Whenever we adjusted the war for political agendas, we lost many men. Its important to learn the lessons from the past and make the right military judgment.

It’s true that SLA lost many men yesterday. However, LTTE lost more and many more were injured! In the last 2 days over 200 tigers killed and over 300 injured! Do not be mistaken that SLA is loosing the battle. Even with high casualties, SLA has captured a part of the earth bund. SLA injured are well taken care of. Most of them are P3 and will be back in field in few weeks. What happen with the LTTE wounded? They even have no logistics to transport the injured! How many hospitals are there to treat them? Treating Injured SLA at Jaffna hospital is routine. If you are not aware, there are Sinhalese doctors working in Jaffna hospital now for several years. BTW, the SLA recruitment rate is average 3500/month. In November, after the capture of Paranthan, this was almost 4000. So there is no shortage of men!

Use of child soldiers by SLA is showing desperation. Highly trained troops have all perished and turned to fertilizer in Vanni. 150+ army officer bodies were burnt enmasse within the last month. Many SLA have deserted after the flooding. I hear heavy equipment like artillery and MBRL were water logged and damaged beyond repair. I also hear even the tanks were not used in the latest attacks. It was hand to hand combat and the SLA sissys were mauled.
Mahinda wanted a do or die mission into Killinochi before being forced to stop by India. He decided to sacrifice more young sinhala children since his horoscope told him to do so. What a fool!!!

"Black Tuesday" for Army: Nearly 650 casualties in North
The Sri Lankan forces have suffered major losses at the hands of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on a single day of fighting in the North.
Tuesday December 16th turned out to be a “Black Tuesday” for the armed forces as they incurred around 650 casualties in fighting against the LTTE in both the Northern mainland of Wanni as well as the Jaffna peninsula.
Tuesday is the day of Mars regarded as the God of war in Greek mythology.
According to informed defence ministry sources who want to remainin anonymous for obvious reasons , about 170 soldiers were killed and 480 security personnel were injured.
The sources however said about 300 of injured personnel had sustained minor injuries and are classified as “walking wounded”.
Official pronouncements have placed army casualties at a very low number not exceeding three digits.
Likewise the official government position was that about 120 tigers were killed and 250 injured.
The LTTE however reportedly lost around 70 cadres. The figures for injury are not known.
The armed forces launched a co-ordinated attack on LTTE positions in the peninsula and mainland before dawn on December 16th.
Soldiers of 53 division broke out from Kilaly in the Jaffna peninsula and targeted the LTTE’s second line of defence along the Kilaly – Eluthumadduvaal axis.
The army had demolished the LTTE first line of defence in fighting some days ago.
After fierce fighting throughout the day the soldiers withdrew without realising their objective.
The Army lost more than 40 men in the fighting within the peninsula while the LTTE lost around 25. Around 160 soldiers were injured.
Simultaneous to the Kilaly assault within the peninsula soldiers of the 57 and 58 divisions also launched a four – pronged operation.
Soldiers moved out from Kunchuparanthan on the Paranthan – Poonagary road towards Paranthan on the A – 9 highway.
In a second move soldiers broke out from Pulikkulam and moved towards Kilinochchi.
In a third manoeuvre soldiers moved from Malaiyaalapuram towards Kilinochchi.
In the fourth move soldiers broke out from Thirumurugandy on the A – 9 and tried to reach Iranaimadhu.
Though fighting on four fronts the soldiers had a common obstacle to surmount.
This was the 18 km long earthbund constructed by the LTTE to strengthen defences around Kilinochchi and Paranthan.
The “L” shaped bund extended from Kunchuparanthan to the west of Paranthan to Iranaimadhu to the south of Kilinochchi.
After a day of fighting the soldiers managed to seize and hold about 5 km of the earth bund in the areas south of Adamban.
The soldiers however incurred heavy losses in the attempt with about more than 130 being killed and around 320 getting injured.
The LTTE lost about 45 – 50 cadres in the fighting.
“Black Tuesday” ended with about 170 soldiers getting killed and around 480 getting injured thus bringing the casualty toll to nearly 650.

I am a tamilian by birth and I have great respect for my (Tamil) culture, tradition and language. We have one of the oldest languages in India (if not the world) which still exists today and there are about 74,000,000 of us who speak the language everyday and follow our rituals year in and out. There is this saying which states that the sun never sets on the Indian Diaspora and the same applies to the Tamil Diaspora as well.
You will find Tamils living in Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname and Indonesia and all over the globe. The dispersal of Tamils around the globe is not of recent origin and at the moment there are seventy million of us spread in over fifty countries of the world.
There are so many people of Tamil origin who have migrated over 500 years ago but astonishingly still maintain their Tamil culture. This is one thing that I still don’t understand. How were they able to maintain all this for over 5 or more centuries?
The obvious answer is actually the most disturbing one for me personally.
It is their passion for and the love of their language and culture which has a cherished heritage which is the reason that binds the Tamil Diaspora worldwide.
On one side, I like this as this is a common bond, which can act as a unifying force but on the other hand, I just don’t like the manner or in other words, I don’t like the fanatic spirit which many people show.
If I look at this subjectively, first let’s take a look at the Indian Tamils. As I have mentioned in my blogs earlier, I have been working in Mumbai for 2 years now and during my brief sojourner here, I have come across a lot of Tamils. One thing which stands out in most Tamils is their dislike for Hindi. Quoting one of my friends, “I will rather die than learn Hindi” or quoting another friend of mine, “I’d rather kiss my A@# than speak in Hindi”.
An average tamilian is unable, or he/she has a deep-rooted feeling that speaking in any other language other than Tamil is a sin. Maybe this is peer pressure but this is a noticeable trend among Tamils. I fortunately do not have this problem as I have lived in Kerala and I can talk about this without bias.
Another thing which again stands out is their close knitted group system which no one else can breach. A couple of decades ago, a few radical Tamils even wanted a separate country but fortunately this ideology has died down now.
Coming to the NRI Tamils, we find that there are major issues which are going on outside India. Tamils in Sri Lanka, Malaysia are all in the news nowadays because they want their political rights or they are fighting for a cause. Mind you, I am not against political suppression of any ethnic group but this is where I am on uncertain grounds. I have a couple of doubts which I would like to raise. I am not going to dwell on the political side of this but more importantly, going to, on the emotional aspect.
Yes, these Tamils living in Sri Lanka, Suriname and Malaysia have lived there for centuries in their respective countries; they hold, mind you, not Indian Passports. All their relatives and friends are from their respective countries. I don’t know as to how these people still refer to themselves as Tamils. Yes, genetically they are Indians but that is all.
I specifically said INDIANS coz they still identify themselves as Tamils.
For them, I think that in their mindset, being a Tamil is greater than being an Indian. You will find so many LTTE or Malaysian Tamil sympathizers in TN. If the Tamils are facing any problem anywhere, there is always this outrage in TN but one thing which I don’t understand is that, why is such an outcry or solidarity not shown if any other Indian is facing a problem? One thing that I would like to stress on is the fact that language is always acquired.
Even the great Rajnikant who is supposed to be the ultimate “Tamil Magan” is actually a Marathi. You can always learn or acquire Tamil or for the matter of fact, any other language but one thing that you cannot change is your genetic identity. All Indians (not the Tamilians alone) are bond by this great Gordon’s knot and we have to support one another in times of struggle and calamity
I would not have any problem if the Tamils took the same stand regarding all Indians but unfortunately, this is not the case.
I would like to conclude by stating that I am neither against the Tamils (ultimately I am one) nor the LTTE sympathizers, but this is merely food for thought to all who calls himself/herself an Indian.
