DefenceWire Predictions now a reality

Courtesy Defence.lk
On October 18th 2007, DefenceWire published an article regarding the possible construction of LTTE suicide submarines and suicide water scooters. Here we discussed the transfer of FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastic) Technology to the LTTE, from a foreign country.

"Unfortunately, with a possible collaboration with the North Koreans, new possibilities may have already emerged for the LTTE. Unconfirmed reports had indicated for years that the LTTE was developing a small suicide submarine. This is not an impossible task considering the group managed to launch surprise attacks using light aircrafts smuggled into the country." (READ FULL ARTICLE HERE)

The Army's Task Force 3 has obtained conclusive evidence of this technology. We have also received credible information from sources within the Navy that the Dvora blown-up recently off the coast of Mulaitivu was by a suicide submerged vessel, possibly a human torpedo/water scooter.

The Dvora was patrolling seas 9 nautical miles off the coast of Mulaitivu when the blast occurred. Given the nature of the blast and the amount of explosives used and the distance from the coast to the FAC, a suicide frogman can be ruled out. A similar blast sunk a Navy Logistics Ship moored to the Trincomalee Naval Yard last year.

Sri Lanka is a free country compared to many other countries in the world. Does lttp allow free speech, free protests etc in their controlled area

You got a free school and tertiary education, free health care and pay very little tax (compared to Australia and other countries) and still ungrateful to her. It clearly shows what type of person you are

If we have problems within communities we can certainly solve by negotiation if not for people like you without blowing others brains out.

Indian Army gets Amphibious Capability: Is this a threat to Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka needs more capabilities in this area too!

Indian Army to have amphibious force soon
29 Jan 2009

NEW DELHI: Modelled on the lines of the Indian Navy's marine commandos, the Indian Army will get its own amphibious force specialising in land and marine warfare by next month, an official here said.

"The amphibious brigade of the army has been undergoing training for over a year at Thiruvananthapuram and will be formally launched by the defence minister (A.K. Antony) next month," a defence ministry official said.

Named the 91 Infantry Brigade, the amphibious force has a strength of 3,000 personnel. “The soldiers have been drawn from the Sikh, Gorkhas and Madras regiments,” the official added.

Amphibious warfare is the utilisation of naval firepower, logistics and strategy to send troops ashore. In the modern era, amphibious warfare persists in the form of commando insertion by fast patrol boats and mini submersibles.

“In modern warfare, an amphibious landing of infantry troops on a beach is the most complex of all military manoeuvres," an army official said.

"The undertaking requires coordination of numerous military specialities, including air power, naval gunfire, naval transport, logistical planning, specialiased equipment, land warfare, tactics and extensive training in the nuances of this manoeuvre for all personnel involved,” the official said.

A well-planned and executed amphibious operation - basically a tri-service operation launched from the sea by carrying soldiers and their weaponry on a ship and affecting a landing on enemy shore - could change the course of a war.

The Indian Army has been augmenting its amphibious capabilities for long. One of the most advanced amphibious warships of the Indian Navy, the INS Shardul, was affiliated to the 5 Armoured Regiment of the Indian Army last year.

Loaded with state-of-the-art equipment, INS Shardul is an amphibious warship capable of transporting personnel and accomplishing all objectives of beaching operations.

The 5 Armoured Regiment holds some of the most potent and advanced tanks in the world. Since 2002, the regiment has been at the cutting edge of the mechanised operations.

My Comment at ExpressBuzz.com

India and Tamil Nadu created, trained, supported and funded the LTTE. Throughout the last 30 years, arms, ammunition and other contraband was smuggled to the LTTE from Tamil Nadu. Twice in the past, when the LTTE was about to be eliminated, the Indian government interfered in our sovereign country to prevent it. Now that a courageous Sri Lankan government is finally poised to eradicate this menace to both Sri Lanka and India, India is interfering again on the pretext of "saving civilian lives." Are you saying that you have no influence at all with your creation, the LTTE, to force them to release the civilians held prisoner as human shields; to prevent them from hiding behind the sarees of women for protection? If you have no influence, why don't you BUTT OUT OF THIS; we'll solve it our way. Is this how you plan to win our sympathy for India's own struggle against terrorists and separatists?

This should be on headlines wherever possible with "ICRC and UN rescuing civilians from LTTE HUMAN SHIELD".
What a shame, the same people LTTE supposed to "Liberate" are being liberated by IC. Every time there is a protest by brain washed diaspora, this news should be spread and highlighted.

Caveman Velu said...

We all know LTTE liberation means Prbhas ass. But innocent bystanders in Sydney and London don't. LTTEs name of the game is brain washing. It's amazing how easy to brain wash non-Sri Lankans. Some only read headlines. CNN in US only shows maximum about 5min news highlight about Sri Lankan per day. LTTE has been riding on this ignorance for decades. What I am saying we should leverage diaspora "concern" about trapped civilians to our advantage by highlighting news like "ICRC and UN rescues LTTE Human shield" everywhere to "educate" IC.

Caveman Velu said...

"

Yes, prospects for the future of Sri Lanka are looking bright indeed, if we play our cards right.

So nice to know that there are other humanist patriots out there!

Anyway, bro, humanism will be hard to be easily inserted into a society that has been scarred by a 30 year war (there are people out there, whose propensity for revenge is greater than pacificity). If not introduced properly, humanism will not be a economically stable strategy, against the concept of terrorism/fascism (perhaps you can elaborate on this point further? - got to run again). This is why all parties engaged in this conflict should be educated.

Anyway my friend, lets hope we can aim to have a compassionate and liberal society in Sri Lanka, where all our citizen can live in peace.

Let me clarify the situation:
Tomorrow - Saturday 30th of January - the London based Sri Lankans will be holding a VICTORY PARADE in Central London. All are welcome – please bring a large SRI LANKAN FLAG.

As tomorrow’s weather is expected to be extremely cold, Westminster Council has granted permission for a bonfire. The VIM organising committee has suggested that this is a good opportunity for ex LTTE supporters to get rid of unwanted clutter, such as flags and posters.

Note, this is not an LTTE event. In any case you won’t be allowed to display any LTTE paraphernalia.

GOSL should put this naive UN High Commissioner of Human Rights into perspective.

She sounds like she is reading only pro-LTTE BBC and AP articles, and have no clue about the ground realities.

On the other hand, GOSL should not allow any non-patriotic media organisation to be in Vanni until the LTTE is completely wiped out.

As soon as these LTTE payrolled media comes, they would divert the focus bringing in various nefarious accusations and issues that would drain GOSL energy. It is better to hold off them until we finish off LTTE. It may be only another month or two.

Apart from ICRC, no NGO or INGO should be allowed in Vanni. The Colombo and North UN offices of Sri Lanka is fully infested with LTTE goons and agents, thus they should not be allowed to carry out any non-humanitarian tasks.

Here is that naive woman has to say,

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said Thursday she was deeply concerned by reports of the rapidly deteriorating conditions facing a quarter of a million civilians trapped in the conflict zone in northern Sri Lanka, and of alleged human rights abuses and a significant number of civilian casualties, as well as the huge displacement.

Pillay also expressed concern at the highly restricted access to the Vanni region for aid agencies and impartial outside observers, including journalists and human rights monitors.

'The perilous situation of civilians after many months of fighting, multiple displacements and heavy rains and flooding is extremely worrying,' Pillay said. 'The lack of access for independent monitors, humanitarian workers and the media only adds to concerns that the situation may be even worse than we realize,' she added.

The High Commissioner cited reports of forced recruitment, including of children, as well as the use of civilians as human shields by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). She also condemned the fact that safe zones promised by the Government have subsequently been subjected to bombardment leading to civilian casualties.

'People trying to flee the conflict areas are reported to have either been prevented from doing so, or to have been arbitrarily detained in special centres,' she said. 'It seems there may have been very grave breaches of human rights by both sides in the conflict, and it is imperative that we find out more about what exactly has been going on. It is also urgent that civilians in the north can find safe shelter, away from the fighting.'

Pillay noted that along with the Secretary-General and other heads of UN agencies, she had already expressed her concerns directly to the Government of Sri Lanka. 'We are all seriously alarmed by the situation,' she said, 'as are many of the NGOs and other organizations operating in Sri Lanka .'

Pillay said the conflict had reached a critical stage: 'While the Government has made military gains on one hand, the rule of law has been undermined on the other. The killing of the prominent newspaper editor Lasantha

Maskman;

Peelamists organised a protest/hunger strke/ signature collection campaign in the heart of Sydney (Martin's Place) yesterday and today. But their hunger strike can be a farce, because I haven't checked if they stay night or weekends.

One good thing about these hunger strikes is that you can share the commitment. I mean you can work on shifts. :)

In that way they can conduct an eternal hunger strike. i.e. there is someone in hunger all the time, but not the same person.

So unless you verify the individuals, no way you can conclude. There will be someone there 24x7.

There were about 200-300 people and obviously some unsuspecting locals could buy their "genocide" story. They also brought elderly to make up some numbers.

Can't help. Sadly SL govt is not taking any measures for such events. Even if we do, public opinion will always be behind the underdog.

But tell me this, after all these lobbying and protests for 30 yrs, how come pussycats have been receiving lesser attention than Tibet, Burma et al.

A lie is short living, truth is eternal. That's how I take it.

Other thing worried me was there were lot of young people there, who I am not have no idea of reality, so I suspect brain washed by their sinful parents.

I doubt how much they'd understand it. Unless there is a pussycat mafia to organize they will be lost souls.

As i say, this diaspora boyz will make Mahabooru day for a mega date of a diaspora chick. It's the hybrid generation which has parental links but no first experience. For them parental tales are fairy tales. There will be at most two hybrid generations, and then after full integration would happen. My two cents of sociology on migrant communities. [you can bargain for less :)]

I wonder what our gov/consulate office is doing. We might get some pressure if these 'barbarians' continue

Indeed. SL foreign service has been very weak, otherwise this organized diaspora bullshit and its bastard child pussycats cannot exist at the first place.

We only had a genuine foreign minister for say two years in last 61 yrs. That was Kadir. A game chandiya [or tawume chandiya] can become any other minister, but FM has to be a great diplomat. I'd love to see a good diplomat enter parliment form national list and hold this role.

Anyway this Boggles bogs the nation. Anyone would be better.

Re: Civilian issue

I feel something fishy. In past two weeks I noted following things happening all of a sudden

- Diaspora protests in west
- Suicide tamil burning himself in india [likely a pussycat black version]
- Many pusycat bloggers taking up civilian issue.
- UN personal in warzone talking about it.
- BBC talking about it.

I have few Qs.

- Has there never been any civialin death before?

I guess there were. In fact more than now. As we were having little knowledge of locations and they were freely hiding behind civilians. And civilians were everywhere those days.

- Why do I hear all pussycat elements going ding dong at once?

How come it all is synchronized? Genuine news takes time to propagate. But a decoded command takes very little time to get every segment to act. It looks like a supreme command from Fatpig to raise the issue.

- Why non pussycat ppl never talk about it?

Carefully see. Every element who protests against civilian death are pussycats. For an example, even SS Monon or Pranab Muckerji never spoke about it. Even Jayalalitha stated that it is not any big issue and happens in any war.

- Why do we not see many parading funerals?

Like in Palasthene. If there were so many deaths why do you think that pussycats will wait w/o publishing? If there are more deaths, I expect to see more and more photos than before.

Conclusion: Pussycats have no other weapons left. This is their last chance and last weapon. So they try to use [a synthetic] civilian issue to stop the war. It is an order from Fatpig for all their elements such as NGO agents, diaspora, TN pussycats, BBC to raise this

SLDF should take maxa care [and even slow down if needed] to make sure and prove that they are wrong. It is another phase of war, we ought to beat it.

I waited all this long to hear the surprise. But not so lucky. There can be some surprise detected by more intelligent species, but not the peasant myself.

However I have found through news many issues which I got surprised with. Pray tell me, which one was the surprise you mentioned.

- CJ taking over hedging rule, in rather a comic way.

- Ranil making a [comic] speech [rather reading someone else's idea] praising SLDF.

- Pussycat submarines.

- Obama wearing your satake.

Or let me speculate for the breaking news of next two hours.

- Mervyn Silva Dr. [Dr in rear] sacked.

- Petrol price reduced to Rs 50/- a litre

- Cabinet reduced to 25

- Oil was found [Well CBK already broke this]

- Plan to impeach CJ [too late now].

- You and CJ in a French style musket-dual, but both muskets are loaded with rubber bullets.

Ceasefire with LTTE barbarians? At this last minute?

[
COLOMBO (AFP) – Sri Lanka will not declare a ceasefire despite growing international concern about 250,000 civilians trapped by fighting with Tamil rebels, Human Rights minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said on Friday.

"There will be no ceasefire," the minister told reporters after a meeting with Colombo-based diplomats. "We will continue with our military operations and we will continue to liberate areas which had not been liberated so far."

His remarks came amid growing concern for the safety of civilians trapped in the northeast of the island, where the defence ministry says it is conducting the final phase of operations against Tamil Tiger guerrillas.]

he he he....

Tamil terrorists and their coolies seem to think… and behave like street gangs... they think that if they can bring 'big guns' (IC) to the fight... we would chicken out...

They stil cannot see what IC did for 25 years!!! Well there’s a reason!
Outsourcing their 'struggle' to International Community the 2nd easiest way… to get the
Elaam… (The first being the terrorism)

Just hold some placards like 'Sri Lanka genocide'... "Failed state' ... 'Sinhala state'...in front of the IC and the west will accept your 'word' and bring you the Elaam!

WOW! As if we Sri Lankans have no ‘medicine’ for that! Great to see our leaders showing to all concerned... that we indeed have a SOLID 'backbone'!

Adios.... Elaam... Adios... all that money... Adios daydreams!

I just found about 48 hour passage time. It was just what we should have done. Now every diplomat should take the 48 hours to show how the protesters themselves kill civilians by holding them.

We should paste posters near the protest stalls and deliver handbills to public next to protests.

SPUR bro/sis I hope you guys are seeing our comments.

Can we start some web based propaganda. Shall we do some work in web and get the attention. If we can get all the ppl of this blog to give publicity that will cover a lot.

We should make most of this 48 hours to educate the world.

We need to create a site, sadly I hv no webspace right now. Anyone who wants my support pls say so. I can contribute for any such project.

Will be back in 10hrs or so [nightfall here]

You can also join the act now facebook group for petitions news updates. We need to get more coverage on it this is the only way it can be stopped, the folllowing information was pulled from the ACTNOW group. Please read.

Over 100, 000 Tamil men, women and children have been killed.

• One million Tamils have fled the country.

• Over half a million Tamils have been displaced.

The Sri Lankan Government is currently engaged in the ethnic cleansing of the Tamil minority and the international community is just turning a blind eye.

A war that most people dont even know about a war not so different to Vietnam, the bombing of innocent civilians, schools, temples, orphanages, refugee camps and hospitals.

They are currently using food, water and medicine as a weapons of war against the Tamils.

The Government of Sri Lanka has removed all International Volunteer Organizations (INGOs) out of northern region where the conflict is taking place. And as the Government does not allow any International Media into the area there are NO WITNESSES of the ongoing Genocide and the unfolding Humanitarian crisis.

Due to the ongoing military offensive, a recent Cyclone and heavy monsoon rains which have caused widespread flooding, over 300 000 people have been left without shelter, food, clean water and inadequate medical supplies. And without proper sanitation this is a breeding ground for an epidemic of Cholera, Typhoid, Malaria and Dengue.

Recently the Sri Lankan Government has boasted that it has dropped so many bombs on its own civilians that it equals Hiroshima. It is the only country in the world to drop so many bombs on it own country to equate to a nuclear blast.

On Saturday 30th November 2008, just days before 120 countries signed up to a treaty banning the use of cluster bombs, the Sri Lankan Government dropped them onto a camp for Internally Displaced Persons.

Sri Lankan is one of the top eight 'red alert' countries where genocide is taking place. It is fourth in the world for using indiscriminate aerial bombardment on its own citizens, it comes after the Soviet Union, Iraq and Indonesia. Regardless of this Britain and many other countries still supplies them with arms.

Since 2005, the Sri Lankan Government has been responsible in Government controlled areas for 1500 extrajudicial killing of Tamil civilians, torture, scores of kidnappings and countless arbitrary detentions.

QUOTES:

*Every 5 hours someone in Sri Lanka is abducted-Asian Human rights commission.

*Sri Lanka has the world's highest number of abductions- Human Rights Watch

*Hon. Mr. Scott MP (Conservative – Ilford, North):* *"In the past few years, Iraq has put on trial its leader, Saddam Hussein, who bombed and killed his own people. Exactly the same thing is being done by the Sri Lankan Government now"*

*Hon. Ms. Susan Kramer MP (Lib Dem – Richmond Park):* *"I wonder whether the Minister understands how distressing it is for our Tamil constituents not to hear an outright condemnation of the Sinhalese Government's use of strategies such as cluster bombing towards their civilians. Such language would have been used in the context of Darfur and elsewhere, yet it seems, selectively, not to be being used in this context"**

*Bruce Fein (Former U.S.A. Associate Deputy Attorney General) (2008):
"The genocide of Sri Lanka’s Tamils has now become mainstream thinking in Tamil Nadu, Malaysia, South Africa, and elsewhere. It explains in part Sri Lanka’s eviction from the United Nations Human Rights Council. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have also been vocal detractors of Sri Lanka’s human rights atrocities. Further, this week New York-based Genocide Prevention Project has included Sri Lanka as one of the eight "red alert" countries where genocide and other mass atrocities are underway or risk breaking out. Also, the Obama administration was handed a policy report on genocide with specific recommendations from former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. This is likely to bring Sri Lanka’s genocide into U.S. focus."

[Allow free movement to the civilians in 48 hours- President urges LTTE
His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, President of Sri Lanka has urged the LTTE to allow the civilians held as a human shield in Wanni to go for their safety. In statement issued yesterday (Jan 29) he further assures safer passage to a security environment.

The statement in full:

My Government, since its election, has always been concerned about the welfare of all citizens of Sri Lanka and their economic and social progress. The welfare of the citizens of the Northern and Eastern Provinces, especially of those in areas dominated by the LTTE, has been of even greater concern to my Government. As a result, my Government has always been committed to usher peace in those regions so that all people of Sri Lanka, especially those in the North and the East will have the opportunity to exercise their democratic rights and choose their leaders freely through elections to realise their political aspirations within the democratic framework that has flourished in Sri Lanka for long years.

However, all efforts for finding solutions peacefully for outstanding issues in the North and the East were repudiated by the LTTE and I was compelled to take measures to combat the terrorism unleashed by the LTTE on the people of Sri Lanka. In the efforts to eradicate terrorism and in the humanitarian operations to free civilians from suffering and insecurity, the Government and the Security Forces have been conscious of the welfare of civilians, their lives and property at all times.

In addition, as a democratically elected Government with a clear mandate from the people, we have always been determined to protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Sri Lanka and to find solutions to all problems within a democratic framework while uniting all the people of Sri Lanka.

In this context, the Security Forces have been successful in conducting their mandated operations to achieve these objectives of the Government and the people of Sri Lanka.

The Government is now poised to take decisive steps that will enable an environment conducive for the reintroduction of democracy that will provide the people of the Northern Province an opportunity to exercise their right to elect their leaders by free choice so that solutions can be found for all outstanding issues through negotiation and discussion and not through violence.

As a result of the operations by Security Forces, LTTE control over civilians is now confined to a small area in the Northern Province and a large number of civilians are being held there forcibly by the LTTE, thus endangering innocent civilian lives.

Being acutely conscious of the welfare of the civilians forcibly being held in the conflict zone by the LTTE, we have declared a safe zone for civilians, the co-ordinates of which were announced by the Security Forces.

This is to ensure that they stay out of harm's way during engagements between Security Forces and armed LTTE cadres, and to assure the safety and security of civilians.

It is unfortunate that the LTTE is exploiting this declared safe zone for civilians by placing their heavy artillery within the safe zone and using it as a launching pad to attack Security Forces and indiscriminately kill civilians."

"I urge the LTTE, within the next 48 hours to allow free movement of civilians to ensure their safety and security. For all those civilians, I assure a safe passage to a secure environment.

I also assure all those living in the North and in conflict areas in particular, that vacating LTTE held areas will ensure the physical, security and enable peace, freedom and rights for all citizens of the country." - MR]

Simply marvellous! Another FIRST!

Not once there was a mention of the word 'Tamil'.

As a policy... we should never inflate the use of this divisive word 'Tamil'... Leave that to the BBC, AP, TN and of course the Tamil terrorists.

Weli,

Religion and war don't go hand in hand. And most of the religion fans forget that Buddhism is not like other religions, that it tries to preach every human activity. Dhamma is an explanation and a way of life. It does not try to explain every corner of human life. i.e. how to do war according to dhamma.

We need to beat the pussycat bandwagon. And we should not be lenient on them at all.

Although you call this the victory, for me it is the beginning of the victory. The war against separatism will be fought in many fronts. Military is one. As long as separatism exist, Sri Lankans will be no diff to Israelis.

And you took it right, the population eruption of South India was happening for 1000s of yrs and the southern tip of this Asian land mass has been in war for more than 1000 yrs. That is simply because there is no room to go. This is exactly a choiceless situation. And the warrior mentality is an essence for survival, and there should not be any dhamma hindrance.

Whatever Dhamma states, I stand strongly for Weaponary development as an export product, and taking the lead in war against terror in global scale.

"'Vision' of a Sinhala sociologist
[TamilNet, Friday, 30 January 2009, 13:22 GMT]
"This victory should not be lost in the peace. (….) The mono-ethnic nature of the North should be dismantled.(….) 'Defence Colonies' defence settlements should be established all over the North. Retired husband and wife ex-employees of the armed forces should be settled in such strategic settlements. Like in mainland China, and earlier in Korea, Armed Forces owned industries should be established in these areas for both defence and civilian production. Our forces should be further strengthened to deter any future attempts, writes engineer turned Sinhala sociologist Dr. Susanta Goonatilake in Sunday Times, dated, January 18. His article is a specimen to understand the vision of a section of Sinhala elite on the political process to follow Colombo’s victory.

Full text of the article appeared in Sunday Times, dated Sunday January 18, 2009:

After the victory: Full-scale development in the north but no racist appeasement

By Dr. Susantha Goonatilake

Kilinochchi was the crown, followed by Elephant Pass with LTTE debacles continuing. It was a string of famous victories. A war begun in 1972 when detonators for 20,000 explosions were sent by India to Sri Lanka is ending.

It was a victory reminiscent of Dutu Gemunu who over 2,100 years ago as a child in the deep South described the helplessness of being pushed into the country's extreme corner by a Tamil invader. Gemunu broke loose. But keeping with Buddhist ethos he paid homage to his dead adversary Elara. Prabahakaran is no just adversary. He must be eliminated.

It was also as important as that of warrior Rajasinghe's struggle against the Portuguese. Rajasinghe was fighting with then Sri Lanka divided into four kinglets; he at Sitawaka, the traitor Dharmapala controlled by Portuguese at Kotte, to-be Christian-convert, Karaliadde at Kandy and minuscule Jaffna kingdom under its pirate king. Rajasinghe surrounded Portuguese Colombo but had to finally give in. Today's Rajasinghe parallel would be Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and the commanders chosen by him.

As with the times of Dutu Gemunu and Rajasinghe, it was a victory in spite of so many obstructing forces. The self-styled "international community" (read Western powers) and meddling India as well as several foreign-funded fronts with the label NGO but actually functioning as foreign spy agencies carried on psychological warfare. In addition, key segments of the local political leadership were giving direct and indirect support to the LTTE.

In the latter category was Chandrika Kumaratunga. She had once offered Prabahakaran a 10 year rule of the north-east which fortunately for us he refused. Through her state media and her speeches, she labelled the LTTE war as justified. As she sent troops to fight the LTTE militarily, she and her cohorts extolled the LTTE cause undermining the forces' morale. Under her regime, she allowed the CFA to be signed and stood silently by as the LTTE established its government structure. Only Ranil Wickremesinghe is now being blamed for this supremely traitorous act. She then proposed under PTOMS still greater powers to the LTTE. And to further highlight her collaboration with the enemy, she even gave a post-tsunami presidential award to TRO, the LTTE front which had imported war material as tsunami relief.

To prevent this victory, foreign funds masquerading as "civil society" plotted in vain. Piece, (falsely called Peace) merchants once paid money to villagers eager to see the capital to come to Colombo to sing slogans that were music to the LTTE.

Prabahakaran who marches with the Tiger emblem of the Cholas that laid us waste in the 11th century echoed that Kilinochchi takeover would be a daydream. The LTTE-Tamil Nadu nexus, very reminiscent of Chola designs on Sri Lanka, bopped in Chennai demonstrations.

Celebrations

After the recent military victories people celebrated, some activities undoubtedly sponsored by the ruling party. But there were numerous free expressions. After the military triumph, Colombo stock exchange rallied, a strong contrast to only a few years ago when segments of the private sector were colluding as a 5th column with antinational piece merchants.

D.S. Senanayake's grandson, UNP Chairman Rukman Senanayake praised the victory. Ranil Wickremesinghe's salute to the soldiers: prices should come down! And S.B. Dissanayake in an election meeting was begging the government not to make political use of the victory. In a news conference, the JVP echoed this same sentiment.

Clausewitz had famously declared "War is politics by other means", politics here covering separatism. This same phrase was used by Marx and Lenin for their class war theories.

The JVP claiming inspiration from the latter has sacrificed the most for the defence of our territorial integrity. But in a mixture of complete muddleheaded thinking and wrong decisions, it has now missed the bus. Yes, the present government will use the war in its election campaign as indeed it should because it is its political leadership that supported the military. We only hope that they would not use it in the sickening sycophant fashion of the government media.

The mood also changed in Jaffna. There were anti-LTTE demonstrations as Jaffna citizens marched with lion flags. The likes of Douglas Devananda could have organised this with state support. But nearly 200,000 ordinary Jaffna citizens at the exhibition organised by the armed forces was a spontaneous expression. Ordinary Jaffna people were voting with their feet towards normalcy.

Our expatriate community which had fought the ideology of both the LTTE and Chandrika was jubilant. In the very Tiger stronghold of Scarborough in Canada, they organised a celebration as they did in Southern California.

After the victory, there were some sour faces also. Donald Gnanakone from California on an Al Jazeera report said that in spite of the Kilinochchi takeover the LTTE would never be defeated by the "Sinhala" army. He and his brother Charles had earlier been linked in several published reports to Ranil Wickremesinghe. Donald had praised the CFA. Charles had been arrested after the assassination of former foreign minister Lakshman Kadirgamar.

Victory not to be lost in peace

This victory should not be lost in the peace. For its own interests, India introduced literally through gunboats the 13th Amendment which transferred the traditional homelands fiction to "fact". Western commentators at the time denounced India as a colonial power. Annulling this forced fiction, empty land in the North should now be developed.

Sri Lankans should have the freedom to settle anywhere in the country as indeed tens of thousands of Tamils have recently done in Colombo. The mono-ethnic nature of the North should be dismantled. All Sinhalese and Muslims expelled by the LTTE should be resettled with compensation. People from all communities should be settled in the empty lands of the North and commercial enterprises employing all communities started. Like Indian "Defence Colonies" defence settlements should be established all over the North. Retired husband and wife ex-employees of the armed forces should be settled in such strategic settlements. Like in mainland China, and earlier in Korea, Armed Forces owned industries should be established in these areas for both defence and civilian production. Our forces should be further strengthened to deter any future attempts.

Equally important: Identify those who have questioned our sovereignty, supported the LTTE and called for foreign intervention. Get the Central Bank and other authorities to stop the inflow of foreign funds to them. If they are in the state sector, expose them and deny them their funds.

For the areas won: rapid development, absolute and full equality and dignity. But no appeasement of racism.

Dear Rover:

Most cruel aspect of war is
not life loss, property loss
or crimes against women and
children; the occasional essentiality of war is the
most cruel aspect.

Humanists do try to avoid war, but when pressed hard
and when they see that war is unavoidable then they fight it with all might still holding humanistic value.

Why do many people obey law?
If we take out all forms of violence from the society
it will be anarchy.

Law is maintained by violent means. If police powers and weapons are taken
away Courts cannot function.

Yes It is hard to press humanism because of many years of war. But if we think carefully this suffering should convince us
why humanism is the form of
Nationalism for this dangerously armed world.

IF WE DO NOT TRANSFORM OURSELVES FROM TRIBALISTIC NATIONALISM TO HUMANISTIC NATIONALISM THEN MY GREAT SPECIES, MAN KIND, WILL HAVE ONLY A SHORT TIME OF EXISTENCE.

Being against war sometimes very well be anti-humanism. OPPOSITION to the war against LTTE at this juncture is crime against humanism.

Namasthe for your standpoint.

weli, I am curious. Could you please elaborate how expatriates are out of touch with the reality in Sri Lanka?

Most of my family is in Sri Lanka, but I am an expatriate. I try to visit Sri Lanka every year, primarily to setup small projects I am bringing to Sri Lanka to help people.

I want to find out how I may have become blind to reality in Sri Lanka.

Thanks.

Guys,

I live in Sydney and heard about this di-ass-pora protest on Martin Sq. No one really cared about it. No such event was reported in major newspapers like SMH, Daily Telegraph and it was not shown in major tv channels like channel 7, 9 or 10.

Aussies is suffering from a South Africa defeat and 40++ heat.

Total waste of time for Di-Ass-Pora.

@ Civilians

Some of them - say 10,000 probably stay with LTTE willingly. But the majority forcibly held. LTTE fire at fleeing civilians. Not all mahaveerar family members are mahaveerars, I guess. I think when LTTE kidnap kids and when they dead their family members automatically become mahaveerars. But these people probably will not support LTTE.

It is time for Sri Lankans live overseas to make noise and let the world know how LTTE trap and keep these human shield and ask LTTE to release them.

TN

fantastic!

they did this from last feb to december'08. then again they started it too soon. i repeatedly wrote to MoD (and DW) to stop this crap.

glad that AT LAST they have got their act together AGAIN.

simple reasons: a terrorist got into the train from vavuniya can land in the heart of colombo by avoiding ALL the check points.

if he/she has to come to medawachchiya to get on the train, few MORE stringent checkpoints has to be passed. PLUS people along the way and in medawachchiya are MORE vigilent (due to whatever reaspons i don't like to specify).

good move.

can start when security improves.

Talking about propaganda, look at what SL government is saying. Does anybody really believe they captured Killinochchi, EPS and Mullaitivu when our great leader VP clearly CLEARLY said they wont be captured?
Anybody could take a few pictures from Trinco, publish them and say we captured Killi. How childish! But the good thing is that it gets diaspora into action all over the world!

Pansilu said...

Guys,

I still feel this 48 hour request from MR for civilians to come out from war torn area is not going to work. Why majority of civilians didn’t come out during last so many months, despite of all requests? Reasons can be as follows:

A. They don’t want to come out as diaspora pointed out. They happy to stay and support LTTE.

B. They wanted to come out but LTTE force fully keeping them as a human shield.

C. They are scared to come out due to LTTE propaganda.

Now, giving 48 hours or 72 hours cannot bring them out in either case. Therefore it is not going to work and we will face problems with India and international communities as the eelam area shrink further. They may twist SLG arms for cease fire.

As I suggested earlier, if we make 57 div just defensive on either side of the Viswamadu-Putthikudu road, say just 02km on each side as safe corridor for civilians, and get ICRC and UN or even some embassy peoples as peace monitors to watch record SLA’s good intensions and LTTE reactions, we may be able to discard reason A and C. Even we can ask ICRC and UN reps to go in and inform civilians to come out. This will prove to the whole world what LTTE is doing. This 04km no firing line can be heavily guarded by 57 and 53 which is now on stand by.

It will not stop the offensives because 55, 58, 59, TF2 and TF3 will hammer terrorists from all other fronts. We must capture complete eastern coastal line as soon as possible to box them in the land without depending on SLN. This will eliminate sea tiger threat also.

What is wrong with such a plan?

Your views please!
