The Dvora was patrolling seas 9 nautical miles off the coast of Mulaitivu when the blast occurred. MULLAITTIVU: THE 571 Brigade troops led by Lieutenant Colonel HAREN RANASINGHE who swiftly responded to information received prevented a massive disaster orchestrated by the LTTE Thursday (29) when they unveiled an LTTE plan to destroy the IRANAMADU tank bund.
17 GR (Gajaba Regiment) troops commanded by Major SENAKA KUMARAWANSA conducted a search in the area closer to the IRANAMADU tank bund and found the stock of explosives brought to the area with the devastating intention of blasting the tank bund paying no heed to mass destruction that might cause to civilians’ residences and a large acreage of their cultivation, as they practiced in KALMADUKULAM tank bund blast a couple of days ago.
Three powerful bombs about 25kg each with floating devices and three detonators were found from the location. Each bomb had been fixed with a magnetic piece enabling them to stick to the iron bars of sluice gates before they explode.
Two diving kits, three detonators and other accessories were also recovered from the scene. The IRANAMADU tank is one of the largest irrigational tanks in the island which feeds a vast area of agricultural lands in the KILINOCHCHI district.
In the meantime, troops operating in VISUAMADU area recovered one sniper gun and two T-56 weapons.
The same day, 59 Division troops captured four LTTE strong points in PUTHUKUDIYIRIPPU south and recovered one T-56 weapon.
Similarly, Task Force-1V troops found one mortar barrel and one base plate from PUTHUKUDIYIRIPPU south Saturday (31).

This is good news. We need a program for nation building. We need a good frame work for this.
We have lots of expat professionals like Rana who can contribute in various fields. We would need their help for sure.
Apart from them, there is a vast majority of locally resident intellects who have no way to contribute for national development. Most of them are working for some foreign firm and hence contributing all their professional skill into the betterment of foreign lands. Apart from the foreign income which they produce, there is no other contribution they can do. Although they live in SL physically, their contribution to nation is just as expats - purely bringing some dollars to SL.
There should be a working plan to get these brains develop the nation. Note that most of these ppl, expat or resident, will not leave their current living and join SL govt service. None of them have much faith in it [which is spoiled by politicians] and SL govt can not pay the hefty sums these guys are earning. The idea should be to get their support while letting them make their own living. Most of them will contribute even free of charge.
The other issue is that these individuals should not be harassed or wasted. Most of us have a very negative feeling about SL public sector. The dignity and value of the individuals should be preserved. Otherwise nobody will contribute.
What we need is a frame work that allows these brains to take part in nation building. It should be something realistic. For an example the recent registration of professionals made no impact at all. SL Govt has to have a proper plan before they ask for help from its professional children.
If there is already one such program, pls inform us.

Many of the civilians are from the mahaveera families. Many of them are still loyal to tigers and may be still willingly staying with them.......

Colombo, Feb 1 (PTI) Sri Lanka today warned foreign diplomats, western journalists and international aid agencies that they would be "chased away" from the island if they attempt to side with the beleaguered Tamil Tigers.
"They will be chased away (if they try) to give a second wind to the LTTE terrorists at a time the security forces, at heavy cost, are dealing them the final death blow," Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa said.
His remarks came as the aid agencies and western media accused the Government of not doing enough to rescue civilians trapped in the fighting between the Army and LTTE.
Rajapakse also turned the heat on international media like CNN, Al-Jazeera and "especially" the BBC, accusing them of trying to sensationalise civilian hardships by telecasting video clips from websites owning allegiance to LTTE.
"These video clips do not indicate bombings or explosions," Rajapakse, who is also the brother of President Mahinda Rajapakse, was quoted as saying in the "Sunday Island" newspaper.
The Defence Secretary urged the international community, including UN agencies, ICRC and media, to exert maximum pressure on the Tigers and make them release civilians trapped in the war zone and stop using them as human shields.
This is the last chance that the LTTE has of sincerely minimising civilian casualties by giving them safe passage out of the conflict zone, Rajapakse said. PTI

Cyril Mathew should be given credit for exposing Tamil cheating madness. I don't think they had the idea of creating a mono ethnic nation in Sri Lanka. One can say prabha is reactionary for what Sinhalese did. You can use the same argument against these Sinhalese as well.

Regarding foreign reserves shrinking. Yes there is a big issue. I heard that reserves are left for only 1 1/2 months. We might have to go behind a friendly country or will have to go for the IMF bailout.
Looks like hedging case will back fire too. City and Standard charted have gone to International courts. Likely that our guys will have to pay. It'll be around USD 700million. Our guys will come out with something if hedging deal backfires. They might issue Bonds for the amount like they did for IOC or something similar. Temporary gata, like they always do.

Today it was LTTE makal padai that performed a devastating pre-dawn assault on 59 division forward defence lines. With 4 or 5 hours, the enemy lines were completely destroyed, many heavy weapons seized including MBRL and artillery. 3 MBTs were also destroyed. A few more have been captured.
The remaining SLA soldiers ran away in complete disarray. The FDL has been redrawn 3 km south of the original FDL line. Hundreds of 59 division SLA have been captured including a few highly prized lt cols. Tiger intelligence division are hard at work getting intelligence debriefing from the captured soldiers.....

Earlier I had mentioned that we may not have a sufficiently common understanding of things to have a discussion, and after reading your response my feelings are confirmed. I saw far more opinion than sober analysis backed by facts. In other words, I do not see your evidence building into a thesis, but rather I read a predetermined point of view- namely, that everything wrong in SL is the fault of Sinhala Buddhists- and a selective citation of evidence to support that view.
Take for example your suggestion that the SLA should have vacated the North and East to ensure "peace." You left out the specific and obvious consequence- a total LTTE victory, without even a fight! The establishment of a fascist, monoethnic Tamil state which would be hostile to SL and would have no reason to cease the use of terror to get its way (since terror had helped achieve the separate state).
If you advocate keeping all options open, then why not consider the "option" of the Tamils renouncing militancy and separatism? Why *assume* that violence is the natural and reasonable path for the Tamils to take, and why not advocate the option of non-confrontation as the best way for the Tamils to avoid getting brutalized (as non-confrontation had worked for the Muslims, leading to the non-phenomenon of anti-Muslim riots)? In other words, why not offer the option of Tamils conceding defeat that you expect the Sinhalese to do?
You assume that the Tamils righteously avoided violence before the 1970s because they wanted to try other means (BTW there was only ONE satyagraha, taking place in 1961, and ITAK's kingmaker politics in the 1960s coincided with the absence of communal violence in that decade). You dismiss the possibility, perhaps subconsciously, that the Tamils realized that they had far more to lose from an armed struggle, and the possibility of success would be remote (anecdotal evidence from some older Tamils confirms the above).
(in case you're wondering what changed the above calculus, consider that the Tamil youth only began to consider militancy seriously after the creation of Bangladesh. They understood very well that they could not achieve their goals on their own, but believed perhaps a bit naively that causing enough trouble would bring Indian intervention and success. Note that Prabakaran did not share this line of thinking).
You claim that you read Broken Palmyra, but inexplicably you have missed the thrust of the UTHR's argument that LTTE totalitarianism was the greatest threat to the fabric of Tamil society. I saw little in your response that took into consideration the UTHR's critique of post-independence Tamil and leftist politics (in the very excellent historical introduction of BP), which you won't find in Obeysekere's, Tambiah's, or other outsiders' works. You cite the SLMM as if it were a credible source, ignoring the UTHR's incisive observations on the Norwegians' increasing pro-LTTE bias, as the latter began to mount CFA violations and the Norwegians had to dismiss them to appear "neutral" (not to mention the Norwegians efforts to dominate the entire "peace process" by assuming the role of both facilitator and CFA monitor, resulting in serious conflicts of interest).
Not many people have read Gunasingam given how difficult it is to get his book, and I find it rather odd that you have nothing to say about his extremely Jaffna-centric analysis that opens a fascinating window into the mentality of the Jaffna Vellala. What did you think about the 2 great milestones for Tamil nationalism that he mentioned: the Colombo-Jaffna railroad (linking Jaffna with the south and quite defeating the concept of Tamil separatism) and the establishment of the Jaffna Municipal Council? Or the bizarre argument that Tamil nationalism started with Arumugam Navalar, even though Navalar had never articulated Tamil identity in terms of geography or "homeland?"
If you are honest and can acknowledge your a priori anti-Sinhala and anti-SL position, we can save each other a lot of time by ending this conversation, because no amount of facts will be able to change what may be an emotional investment for you. CMEV and CAFFE will always be objective NGOs in your mind, despite the former's affiliation with the anti-govt CPA and the latter's status as an outright UNP body. Ulf Ericsson will always be the beacon of truth, even though he declared during the CFA that the SLA was an undisciplined mob which could never fight the LTTE. You will refuse to accept anything other than that the Rajapakses looking for a war in 2006, taking lengths to ignore the reality that the LTTE had made its own intentions quite clear by going after murdering Kadirgamar, trying to kill Fonseka, and starting a shadow war in Jaffna even before Mahinda was elected.
On the other hand, if you can present an original perspective which I won't get from Sunday Leader's editorials, I would welcome it.
