The Dvora was patrolling seas 9 nautical miles off the coast of Mulaitivu when the blast occurred. Given the nature of the blast and the amount of explosives used and the distance from the coast to the FAC, a suicide frogman can be ruled out. Typically cruising will be done using conventional fossil fuel powered engines which need air, usually supplied through a snorkel device. When at attack depth, they will need to switch to battaery power and carry enough compressed air for the sailors to breathe.
Both are very difficult to achieve, if the craft needs to remain submerged for a long period of time. This is the reason over 30 similar crafts were captured by the US and Columbian authorities on drug runs.

Rajapaksa did not mince his words when he said that some ambassadors, specially the German and Swiss ambassadors, and some news agencies were behaving irresponsibly.
He named, CNN, Al-Jazeera and specially the BBC of trying to sensationalize civilian hardships by telecasting video clips from LTTE websites.
"These video clips do not indicate bombings or explosions," Rajapakse said.
He urged that what the international community including UN agencies and the ICRC should do is to maximize pressure to bear on the Tigers and make them release civilians trapped in the war zone and used as human shields.
"This is the last chance that the LTTE has of sincerely minimizing civilian casualties by giving them safe passage out of the conflict zone," Rajapakse said.
It was irresponsible not to talk about civilians held in the war zone by the LTTE while making comments that only helped the Tigers, he said accusing BBC Anchor Chris Morris of being known for partisan support to the LTTE terrorists from the 1990s.
"If he does not act responsibly and attempts to create panic, I will have to chase him out of the country," Rajapakse said.
He warned that members of the international community, specifically the German and Swiss ambassadors, who are trying to create panic will be similarly treated.
Rajapaks said that all democratic countries, organizations and news agencies must act responsibly and bring pressure on the LTTE terrorists to free the civilians trapped in the war zone.

Can you elaborate on how the British oppressed the Sinhalese with "the more than willing collaboration of the Tamil community"? Similarly, can you explain how the poverty of the Sinhala (and Tamil) masses after independence was caused by the Tamil community?

Nepal lawmakers check border for intrsion

KATHMANDU: A team of Nepal's lawmakers Saturday begun inspecting the nation's eastern border with India to look into the mounting allegations from border towns that the neighbouring country was encroaching on Nepali territory.
Headed by Padma Lal Bishwakarma, the International Relations and Human Rights Committee of the Constituent Assembly Saturday reached the tea garden district of Ilam to hold consultations with residents, government officials and security forces.
Nepal alleges that India's border security forces have erected a camp in Ilam. Five areas adjoining India's hill town of Darjeeling are also under dispute.
Locals claim that Darjeeling's forest officials tried to build infrastructure on Nepal's side of the border.
The lawmakers will also visit Panchthar district in the east, where an area is under contention.
On Friday, the team had been to Jhapa district where one of the pillars demarcating the border is under dispute.
India and Nepal share a nearly 1,800-km open border. Encroachment disputes have risen in almost half of the 75 districts of the Himalayan republic.
The boundary between the two nations is demarcated by rivers. With some of the rivers changing course during the years, the disputes have grown.
In November, when India's External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee visited Nepal, he had said that most of the border disputes had been resolved and a new boundary would be demarcated soon.
Two of the most contentious spots are Susta in Nawalparasi district in western Nepal and Kalapani in far-western Darchula district.
Nepal says while Susta has been encroached upon by Indian civilians, Kalapani is said to be occupied by Indian troops since India battled Nepal's northern neighbour China in 1962.
A committee has been formed in Susta to reclaim Nepali territory and a memorandum submitted by it to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda.
The committee has also warned it would start an agitation if the government fails to resolve the row.

Vanni source has reported that Brigadier Bhanu, who was in charge of the LTTE artillery and mortar units (LAMU) was seriously injured in Udayarkattu few days ago, lost his battle with his life late evening yesterday (30th Jan).
Capturing the Elephant Pass in 2000 is one of the very high point of his life. Brigadier Bhanu has joined LTTE early 1993 played a huge roll by training lot of young men / women to fight for the freedom.
During the recent war with Ceylon forces, Brigadier Bhanu was one of the great leaders who stand still and delivered till his last minute.

The SLA has suffered heavy casualties, and exactly zero LTTE casulaties, initial reports from Vanni said.
At least 3 Main Battle Tanks (MBTs) of the SLA were destroyed, and Tamil Eelaam is closer than ever, LTTE officials have told media. LTTE officials also said "just wait and see".
