RAW plotting Prabha's escape?

A secret plan to extract Prabhakaran and Poddu Ammaan from the battlezone has/is in operation. A team of influential Tamil expatriates had arrived in Chennai to coordinate this mission, which is being organized by the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) of India.

The plan was/is to extract Prabhakaran and Poddu Ammaan and bring them to safety and to coordinate disruptive attacks in Sri Lanka from abroad. It is DefenceWire's understanding that the plan was hatched under pressure from Tamil Nadu and to hold Sri Lanka to ransom over the long-run. An unspecified sum of money has been put together as the budget for this operation and two Ukrainian mercenary pilots have also been recruited, sources told DefenceWire.

The second part of the plot is to get the remaining top-ranking LTTE leaders to surrender to the ICRC, which, according to international norms, prevents any interference from the Army. This was to ensure the lives of these second and third-rung leaders will be safe and they would receive amnesty since no specific charges can be leveled against them by the AG's Department. After receiving amnesty, the men and women cannot be touched and they would be free to coordinate their plans in Sri Lanka.

There is now fresh doubt as to whether Prabhakaran and Poddu have already been extracted. The Navy said last week it had fired at a plane that had come and landed at Puthukudiirippu and left. The Air Force refused this claim. The SLAF has recently been having some problem detecting and intercepting small low-flying aircrafts.

There is also some doubt as to whether an escape was made via the sea. 10 Tigers were extracted on the 18th of this month by an LTTE Sea Tiger Boat from Pulmoddai, indicating some gaps in the Navy's own defenses.

Once, LTTE even took a diesel delivery guy hostage. He was later used to negotiate the release of LTTE cadres in SL custody.

How to sponsor the education of a child of a fallen/disabled soldier

1. You can now easily sponsor a child of a fallen/disabled soldier through the sevavaitha scholorship program

2. You will be sending your contribution directly into the child's account (It does not go into a fund and there are no involement of 3rd parties)

3. Stipulated monthly amount is US$10 (Rs750-1000). You can contribute more if you like.

4. Duration of the scholorship can be decided by you. It can be 1 year or more.

5. Sevavanitha will provide you with the child's details along with contact info. You can contact the family directly and verify all the details yourself beofre depositing funds. Process is very transparent.

Please email me at hareen_m@yahoo.com for the application form and a detailed description of the process.

Lol! I like your naivety act. I'm sure you know very well that the LTTE never transported its own fuel. It was never worth the risk. Back in the days, SLN used to do it for 30% premium. Now the rate might be different, but there is no shame in getting the "enemy" to do the dirty work.

Don't be surprised if Praba is extracted under the nose of SLDF. Praba is a symbol to the "tamil movement". And if the leader falls to the hands of Sri Lanka Army - dead or alive. There are going to be lot of implications in TN. Total defeat for the "tamil movement". This it self will create problems to the center.

Many of the Sri Lankans may not agree with me... but it appears to me that Sri Lankans are never free unless and until we get rid of the 'shackles' called 'Injun factor' in our affairs.

After seeing this recent entry, I have no choice but to agree. This story is ridiculous.

Thalaivar and Pottu Amman are wanted in India for the murder of Rajiv Gandhi. RAW faced utter humiliation having trained and armed the very people who killed its head of government. Do the Indians really want to be stabbed in the back by these two again???

It is one thing to argue that RAW tried to extricate these two (with the collaboration of LTTE commanders hoping to get Indian amnesty) to punish them before the SLA could grab them. It is quite another thing to foolishly believe that RAW hopes to use them against SL. ESPECIALLY post-Mumbai where the Indians are desperately trying to build an international case against Pakistan for sponsoring cross-border terrorism!!!!!

The Indian establishment, with the exception of certain post-dated fossils like B. Raman, want the Sri Lanka war to be over. In the long run, New Delhi has gained nothing from this conflict aside from a dead PM, humiliated IPKF & RAW, and pushing SL closer to China and Pakistan for weapons. The longer this war drags on, the less the Indians will be able to influence SL as the Chinese move ever carefully and gradually into the Indian Ocean.

Excellently articulated. The Indian response to Prabhakaran, despite the protests op the TN politicians, must consider the following:

1. We lost an Indian PM. Nothing can change that. There will be a lot more trouble in India if GOI lets this slide.

2. We are fighting a war against terrorism ourselves, especially after Mumbai. Wouldn't look too good if, after protesting to the world about terrorism, we turned around and supported a seperatist movement elsewhere, would it?

That's realpolitik.

Even RAW has a plan to take PIG out from Vanni, it is not easy as troops covered the araea and always watching the movements in the envorinment. Best thing is to knowledge front leaders abt this RAW plans and keep their troops ready for any sort of anty aircraft attack and well cover the sea side by Navy.

They may be purposly make a sea battle nearby areas in Mulathiv and try to escape with PIG quickly while bttle going on..

A film has a decisive end; but a soap opera goes on rather aimlessly for a long time.

It is indeed very interesting to see how all this would conclude. It is like trying to think of how a long running TV drama/Soap opera would suddenly come to an end if the main actor/s die unexpectedly. Very few people ever expected the LTTE soap opera to end at all. This is a part of the soap the script writers did not anticipate.

Thanks to the current political and military leadership in Pukka Land, the opera is being prematurely curtailed – thank heavens.

My money is on VP and top goons escaping to fight another day. I would be most delighted if I am proven wrong. Let’s see what happens before the final credits go up....

Saul,

Namaste and welcome to DW. STD = Sun Tzu's Disciple, another blogger. We're interested in hearing your views as an outsider.

On Sri Lankan blogs you may come across views very skeptical and suspicious of Indian intentions (which may even include my own at times). SOme of it is unwarranted and borders on paranoia, but the fact remains that it traces back to Delhi and Madras's support for Tamil militancy/terrorism in Sri Lanka in the 1980s. Ultimately the root causes of the war were our own fault, but it would never have lasted this long if the LTTE had not had sanctuary in Tamil Nadu and built momentum to launch open war, even after India closed itself to the LTTE by 1991.

I believe in moving forward and working with India and other countries towards regional security and prosperity. Rebuilding SL is far more important than allowing the past to push foolish strategic choices. We wish India the best in eliminating terrorism and moving into the 21st century, as we want to do the same.

What is the typical view on LTTE in India?

To give some perspective. Most people in India do not 'think' of the SL/ LTTE fight because it is too far away from our immediate perspectives - the trouble with Pakistan, for example.

I mean no insult to anyone by the above statement; it is the way it is. Just to compare, most Lankans would probably not think about Indonesia or their problems, because Lankans have their own perspective.

With that caveat, I think I can say that a lot of Indians - when they think of SL/ LTTE- are not very comfortable with the LTTE. Reason one - Rajiv Gandhi. Reason two - Mumbai attacks (by terrorists). If we support LTTE, how can we afford to complain about our own internal security and what happened in Mumbai?

India is a big country, IMO (IMO only), the only support for LTTE- such as it is- is in Tamil Nadu, not the whole South India.

Is TN that much of a big supporter of LTTE? I doubt it. For example, some online LTTE sources implied mass protests in Tamil Nadu by tens of thousands of students (IIRC). My source in Chennai told me there were barely 500 students protesting.

I think that TN leaders are driven by their own political compulsions; I do not know how serious they are about actually supporting LTTE, but Indian politics - especially TN politics - has a lot of 'drama'. Hunger strikes galore, abuse, what have you.

Personally, based on what I have read, I have a lot of respect for people like Bhairav and Peter. However, and I am not being disrespectful, I feel no 'affinity' towards them - they are not Indian. I wish all of SL the best; I wish SL Tamils the best.

But I have no sympathy for the LTTE.

Well, LTTE couldn't live up to the hype created by the fans. They said there will be NO military solution in Sri Lanka.

{Thank you president... thank you... For a moment, in early 2005, I thought that a leader with a strong backbone would ever be born in Sri Lanka!}

I think you meant to say 'Never'.

It is the chemistry between MR/GR/SF/RW(PM)/SLAF commanders and the rest of the leadership that made it possible.

When LTTE started the killing campaign as soon as MR got elected, they had no choice to be together and stronger against the enemy.

Saul,

Welcome & always interesting to hear from an Indian viewpoint. Wijey got it exactly right about the past and moving on without being trapped in a blame-game cycle.

I only wish that we could emulate the Vietnamese in their relationship with the US. If any country can be justified about being hacked off about the US, it's North Vietnam. Millions of lives lost, infrastructure destroyed etc. Yet, you don't hear of the Viets whining about the US. They just got on with it and moved forward. It does of course help that they won their war :)

Sri Lanka, after winning our war (i.e. annihilating the main force units of the LTTE), should do the same in regard to our relationship with India. After all, we know that behind the scenes, India and various Western bloc countries provided GOSL with massive amounts of intel (never publicly admitted), for instance, in finding and tracking the LTTE's arms fleet.

Finally, ignore, the tedious mud slinging :) Reminds me of the classic saying about trying to win internet arguments.

"Arguing on the internet is like winning the special Olympics, even if you win, you're still retarded."

Karunanidhi hates LTTE. They tried to kill him and install Vaiko in his place as CM of TN. From Beginning, Karuna does not like LTTE. He said that many times even now openly. But when CPM party tried to show support for LTTE by organzing hunger strikes (in the name of support to Sri lankan Tamils), Karunanidhi had to get involved to show support to SL Tamils. (otherwise his title "leader of world tamil race" will be in question). CPM tried to pull down the congress govt in center by forcing DMK to pull out of support to Congress by this act. Karunanidhi is trying his best to keep his title as well as support to congress intact with his political acts.

"The front should face the forthcoming elections in Tamil Nadu on the question of achieving an independent and sovereign nation state for Eezham Tamils, in no uncertain terms, and get the mandate from the people", the mails further urged."

You are not correct on this DW.
after the gazette notification banning LTTE in Sri Lanka, "being a member of LTTE" is enough to prosecute that person.
i dont think by surrenderring to ICRC or the UN they can get immunity from prosecution. the only thing the ICRC and the UN can do is get a guarantee against execution/imprisonment without a proper trial and a conviction.
definitely the Attorney General will be able to file charges against those members.

Most of the Indians even don't know much about Sri Lanka except Cricket and Sanath. (They love our team and cheer for us if not played with India :-)

I personally HATE India for creating this LTTE menace. But I think those are bad political decisions and nothing to do much with it's people. On the other hand Dr. Manamohan is the MOST educated leader in the world (I don't think any country leader can beat his educational qualifications). So I don't think he do the same political mistakes like late Indian leaders.
In this view, I think if RAW needs Prabha/Pottu the only reason they need is to disable(missing in action :0) them.

I am confused over these two reports.
One is from DW about Navy Dovra a week ago under the heading of
Tigers' loosing game, 3rd Paragraph.

Second one is from Lakbima Wednesday(28th, 2row) news paper with heading Muhude Gatum Mada Praba Pana giyeda?

Can anyone please confirm who is telling the truth. DW or Lakbima?

Thanks

ICRC cannot automatically grant amnesties to every criminal who surrenders to them, ol' chap. Not even the Catholic Church's confessional can do that.

An amnesty for crimes can only come from the judicial system of the nation whose jurisdiction under which the crimes were committed. And then, even if the SL judiciary grants an amnesty, nations such as the US can still prosecute war criminals of any nation and can pursue them to the corners of the earth.

The game ain't over. It just started to heat up.
