SF hunts LTTE team as plane lands in Visuamadu

A 30-man LTTE team that breached the 59 Division FDL launched a string of attack this morning killing 15 soldiers in the process. The team had landed in Security Forces dominated Mulaitivu from the Nanthikadal lagoon around 6 a.m. undetected by the Army.

The team launched attacks on an Army Bus, Tractor and two Tanks causing damage to the four vehicles. The team then called in artillery at the FDL and coordinated a strike at the 59 FDL breaching it for a period of time until the Special Forces and Commandos were called in to secure the area. 11 Tigers were also killed in the counter attack, which is still ongoing.

Meanwhile an LTTE plane made a landing around 1.5kms ahead of the 58 Division's FDL at Visuamadu North. A heavy barrage of MBRL fire was immediately directed to the area. No movement was observed from the area following the attack. The Plane had landed on a tar road, further confirming the Army's doubts that it was not always using the landing strips discovered in the area.

In another development, a group of Tiger explosives experts on a mission to blow up the Iranamadu Tank Bund were caught following a daring amphibious operation along with a large quantity of explosives. If the bund was blasted, it could have caused irreparable damage to the area and made the progress of the Army extremely difficult.

One last thing, Chaturanga:

The more you piss off halfwits like "appriyashantha" and Sam the Mental Patient, the more you should come back here and piss them off more. It's pretty funny to watch appriya's interesting writing skills and the limitations to his sense of wit (although not as funny as watching Arse-ithri make fun of Sam's ancestry and Sam smiling about it).

Whoops

"although not as funny as watching Arse-ithri make fun of Sam's ancestry and Sam smiling about it"

meant to say, "and Sam sitting quietly like a whipped dog." First time I saw one on the internet, and surely it was a pathetic show of cowardice and idiotic fear on his part!

Good thing for us that the SLA doesn't recruit Sammy's type.

note here kajendran did not get 'horse' moniker becse of anything he has between legs. the thug is known as horse bcos he was instrumental in fabricating exams results so that they enter university of jaffna. 'horse' meant to symoblise taking a free ride into university.

Dr. Ananda-USA

You have the inability to grasp the weakness in your side, however you see the problem well with others. This is how narrow minded LTTE diaspora reacts.

[ "We see problems only when one community tries to create a "ghetto" mentality refusing to mix with others and refusing to progress with a changing world."]

This blog promotes the ghetto mentality of Sinhalese with your support. This is my biggest fear that rallying Sinhalese as patriots without the ability to tell a wrong doer in the face, people like you help to create the ghetto culture within us as well.

[I congratulate Mahen, for finally coming to the correct conclusion, that WE MUST LIVE TOGETHER PEACEFULLY as ONE PEOPLE, in ONE COUNTRY, that is Sri Lanka.]

Can you really do when you praise guys who call others Sakkikiliya?

[ It is towards this end, that many patriots here consistently support the concept of ETHNIC INTEGRATION; a MIXING if you will, where the different communities live, work, raise and educate children, and help each other as human beings, SIDE-BY-SIDE as we did before this conflict began.]

Another bunch of BS. You help polarize members within own community. By doing so, how can you be the champion of ethnic integration?

[ I hope that at the conclusion of this unhappy war, more and more former LTTE Tamil supporters will give up their separatist apartheid dreams like Mahen, and join hands with us Sinhalese, and our Tamil friends who have never supported the Eelam quest, to live TOGETHER in this resplendent isle, this Janma Bhumi, that we call home.]

If we can't offer an alternative for Sinhalese, Tamils don't gain anything by joining them. Tamils can only expect to get out of misery by abandoning LTTE.

If both Sinhalese and Tamils to prosper, we have to change our corrupt political culture first.

Chaturanga, I may put some comments into your post if you don't mind.

If Ananda-USA is a patriot any lump of cow dung can become a patriot.

This is just a personal attack so there is nothing to discuss.

Patriotism is not saying everything is good about Sinhalese, SLDF and the SLG but being a patriot, humanist and fair person who wish the best for his mother land.

You got it wrong my friend. This is called fake patriotism. Correct one stated below,

Patriotism is not saying everything is good about Sinhalese, SLDF and the SLG but being a patriot, humanist and fair person who DOES the best for his mother land.

In that category only Wijayapala, Rana, Swarnajith, Amma Gahai, Rover, Saman, Puran appu, Vajira and few others qualify for the patriotic award.

No doubt in my mind these people contributed lot to this blog and I wish and believe they are true patriots of our motherland.

People like you, Asithri, Appryashantha, sam Perera and Ananda-USA are aggravating the problem and trying to bog down Sri Lanka forever.

This is yet again a personal attack so there is nothing to discuss.

People like Sujeewa are in between and trying to please both sides but will not work as he think.

Now you've got busted here. You had (have) VIEW about patriotism and you tried to justify your case based on having two groups of people. So you had to kick Sujeewa out from your two groups.

DW and Real patriots,

There is a confirmed news.

Sunday night Special commandos attached to 58 has surrenderd bunker used by Velupillai Prabakaran. Before that Army launched surprised attack to tiger forward defence line 1KM from that bunker. When forces reach to bunker caders believed to be black tigers and special unit guarding the Prabakaran either surrendered , killed and some has run away.

Still it's not clear Army units captured Prabakaran. Mostly yes. Because last night some high profile LTTE top brought to colombo escorted by four Mig's.

Who is this high profile terrorist got by SLDF?

Is it Prabakaran?

There is a big rumour among diplomats in Colombo SLDF captured Prabakaran. His bunker complex fell to Commando unit after firece battle which killed many tigers. But all fight occured around the bunker complex and it's look lie except few guarding units many were sent to crack oncoming Army units. But some special commando unit entered the complex in a secret way after tipped by one surrendered cadre Prabakaran bunker location.

The plane DW indicated landed 1.5 Km from 58 could be the one to rescue Prabakaran. But how ever it's crystal clear and confirmed that Army got one of the biggest head of LTTE.

Could be Prabakaran. If it's correct 99% war is finished.

Happy national freedom day to all who love mother LANKA.

Earlier I never say Prabha capture but there is a request for discussion for conditional surrender. This has presented to HE Ambassador Lionel Fernando, which SL gov never took serious and rejected. This is true story.

Ananda- USA,

But if you believe or not either Prabha or another big chap captured by 58 Special Commandos.

You need to look beyond the self-importance of these inflated monkeys, to see where downfall comes from. It was and will always be from their fatally flawed within, the toxic cultural and attitudanal mix, which they so successfully hand down to each generation.

Sri Lanka needs not sweat to keep its tribal racist tamil crowd in check. Let them run wild from time to time and cull them just like we do here in the US with deer and other pests. The groups that have chosen not to ingrate on the basis of imaginary superiority will endow future generations also with the same fatal death wish.

These guys will self-destruct generation after generation. We only need to give them enough rope, and they'll hang themselves always.

Mark my words. We've always known the game. It's just the score that changes each time, but the outcome is always the same.

By Ranga Sirilal

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's 25-year civil war with Tamil Tiger rebels will likely escalate into the bloodiest period of fighting the island has seen after the government scrapped a tattered truce, experts said on Thursday.

Sri Lanka plunged back into war after four years of relative peace almost as soon as President Mahinda Rajapaksa took power in late 2005. But both he and the Tigers had held off scrapping a Norwegian-brokered truce to avoid appearing the villain.

With the pact now formally ended, hopes of resurrecting collapsed peace talks anytime soon are dead and investment in the $26 billion economy could suffer.

Sri Lanka's stock market fell 1.2 percent on Thursday as investors braced for escalation.

"This means all-out war. The government has dropped the peace option and has opted for a fuller military onslaught on the rebels," said Iqbal Athas, an analyst with Jane's Defense Weekly in Colombo.

Wednesday's announcement came hours after suspected Tiger rebels bombed a military bus in central Colombo, killing four people and wounding 24. It was the latest in a litany of attacks that have killed hundreds in recent months.

Violence continued on Thursday. The military said it destroyed six rebel bunkers in the northwestern district of Mannar, killing six Tigers, while the pro-rebel Web site, www.tamilnet.com, said the insurgents had thwarted a major army offensive and killed 10 soldiers.

Separately, two soldiers were killed in a mine blast in the northern district of Polonnaruwa.

More than 5,000 people have been killed since early 2006, taking the death toll since the war erupted in 1983 to around 70,000.

The government said the Cabinet decided to scrap the 2002 ceasefire because the Tigers were using it as cover to regroup and rearm and had violated its terms thousands of times.

However, it insisted the door remained open to talks in future if conditions allowed or if the Tigers laid down arms.

PUT BACK A DECADE

In Washington, U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the United States was troubled by a decision he said would "make it more difficult to achieve a lasting, peaceful solution to Sri Lanka's conflict."

"We call on both the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam to avoid an escalation of hostilities and further civilian casualties," he said in a written statement.

In New York, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon regretted the government's decision, his spokeswoman Michele Montas said, and was "deeply worried" that the withdrawal came amid intensifying violence in Sri Lanka.

Warcrimes attack on hospital

THE SHELLING of a hospital pediatric ward Sunday in Sri Lanka gave the world a glimpse of the scorched-earth offensive Sri Lanka's government has been conducting against the secessionist Tamil Tigers. UNICEF and the International Committee of the Red Cross expressed shock that the hospital was shelled, leaving children and their mothers mutilated, dead, and dying.

It does not matter whether the government of President Mahinda Rajapakse or the Tiger leadership is most to blame for the suffering of 250,000 civilians trapped in the war zone. The war has to be stopped. The Obama administration ought to ask for a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for a cease-fire, and the Asian powers providing military assistance to Sri Lanka - China, India, and Pakistan - should exert their influence on the government to halt the shooting.

Ending the offensive is not only a humanitarian imperative, it is also the politically wise thing to do. Even if defeated militarily, the Tigers are likely to regroup and conduct terrorist operations in the capital, Colombo.

Also, many of the 62 million Tamils living in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, anguished at the plight of their fellow Tamils, are expected to stage major protests Thursday, the anniversary of Sri Lanka's independence from Great Britain. Schools and universities in Tamil Nadu have been shut in anticipation of trouble. There is a danger that Sri Lanka's intercommunal conflict could have destabilizing repercussions in India.

The conflict between Tamils of northeastern Sri Lanka and the Sinhala-dominated government has been going on since 1983. The only true solution must be political: some form of confederal autonomy for the Tamil regions.

But the more civilians are killed and maimed, the harder it will be to reach that solution.

Gotabaya should be prosecuted for Genocide, war crimes – Prof.Boyle, Prosecution Team member of Slobodan Milosovic

Commenting on the interview to the BBC and to the Sky TV by Sri Lanka’s Defence Secretary, Professor Francis Boyle, professor of international law at the University of Illinois College of Law, told TamilNet that “the deliberate targeting of Hospitals and Civilians by the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) violates the Geneva Conventions and is thus a war crime,” and that “as a United States Citizen Defense Minister Rajapakse should be prosecuted by the United States government for violating the US Genocide Convention Implementation Act and the US War Crimes Act.”

Professor Francis Boyle, professor of international law at the University of Illinois College of Law.
Full text of the comment by Prof Boyle follows:

“The deliberate targeting of Hospitals and Civilians by the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) violates the Geneva Conventions and is thus a war crime.

“The GOSL Defense Minister Rajapakse has publicly admitted that they have turned the Tamil North of the country into a so-called free-fire zone, which is clearly illegal and criminal under International Humanitarian Law.

“It is the culmination of the long-standing GOSL policy to inflict genocide upon the Tamils in violation of the 1948 Genocide Convention, to which Sri Lanka is a contracting party. As a United States Citizen Defense Minister Rajapakse should be prosecuted by the United States government for violating the US Genocide Convention Implementation Act and the US War Crimes Act.”

As an internationally recognized expert, Professor Boyle serves as counsel to Bosnia and Herzegovina. He also represents two associations of citizens within Bosnia and has been instrumental in developing the indictment against Slobodan Milosevic for committing genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A scholar in the areas of international law and human rights, Professor Boyle received a J.D. degree, and A.M. and Ph.D. degrees in political science from Harvard University. Prior to joining the faculty at the College of Law, he was a teaching fellow at Harvard and an associate at its Center for International Affairs.

I was with a group of patriots and we will donate about 25 legs to veterans. The Army has a factory that makes about 100 per month and $100 per full leg and $40 for below the knee.

I wonder the manufacturing can be streamlined to produce them in a much more cost effective manner. There are lot of 'lean' manufacturing experts available.

The production rate doesn't seem to be enough to keep up with the demand.

Please make a priority to help out fallen comrades. They have given you plenty of reasons to come here and celebrate.

The Tokyo Co-Chairs (Norway, Japan, US and the EU) yesterday admitted to their failure to persuade the LTTE to allow civilians freedom of movement.

In a press release issued yesterday the Co-Chairs have called on the LTTE to discuss with the Government of Sri Lanka the modalities for ending hostilities, including the laying down of arms, renunciation of violence, acceptance of the Government of Sri Lanka's offer of amnesty; and participating as a political party in a process to achieve a just and lasting political solution; and call on the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE to declare a temporary no-fire period to allow for evacuation of sick and wounded, and provision of aid to civilians.

The release said: The Tokyo Co-Chairs (Norway, Japan, US and EU) jointly express their concern about the plight of thousands of internally displaced persons trapped by fighting in northern Sri Lanka.

The Co-Chairs call on the LTTE and the Government of Sri Lanka not to fire out of or into the no-fire zone established by the Government or in the vicinity of the PTK hospital (or any other medical structure), where more than 500 patients are receiving care and many hundreds more have sought refuge.

They also call on both sides to allow food and medical assistance to reach those trapped by fighting, co-operate with the ICRC to facilitate the evacuation of urgent medical cases, and ensure the safety of aid and medical workers.

The LTTE and the Government of Sri Lanka must respect international humanitarian law.

"International efforts to persuade the LTTE to allow the civilians freedom of movement have failed. There remains probably only a short period of time before the LTTE loses control of all areas in the North.

The LTTE and the Government of Sri Lanka should recognise that further loss of life-of civilians and combatants - will serve no cause, the release said.

The Co-Chairs, India, the United Nations and others will work with the Government of Sri Lanka, to ensure the internally displaced people from the North are transferred to temporary camps where UN agencies, the ICRC, and humanitarian organisations will have full access and the IDPs will be treated according to international, standards and re-settled in their original homes as soon as possible; and an inclusive dialogue to agree on a political settlement so that lasting peace and reconciliation can be achieved, a press release said.

Ninja's example: I said no genuine Patriots would said things like that, I would not so classify Pansilu/Chaturanga.

About searching for myself, when you make assertions like that, the burden is on you to provide the evidence, not on others. That is just a cop-out which shows you cannot back up your statements. If you can't back it up, you should say you made a mistake and retract it.

"I see that u pick and choose the points in my posts that u want to counter since you obviously have no answers to others"

This is neither obvious nor true; its just an unsubstantiated assertion by you. I picked those points in your post that were concrete enough to focus on; it was not an attempt to take your words out of context.

"for instance I also claimed we insult tamils in general and you say?? nothing."

Well, actually I did reply as follows:

"Ananda-USA said...
asterix said...

"to the tune of kill all tamils". doesn't mean the exact phrase. I was refering to racially charged hateful sentiments expressed towards not just LTTE supporters but Tamils at large"

Please show where ALL Tamils at large have been subjected to this kind of hateful statement at this blog; in a serious statement by a patriot outside a pillow fight between LTTEers and Patriots, OK?

Thanks.
February 4, 2009 2:59 AM"

"I said that we wouldnt treat a hostage situation involving sinhalese differently and you say?? nothing."

Yes. I didn't say anything about this, because again it is an unsubstantiated assumption/ assertion on your part. How do you KNOW that "we wouldn't treat a hostage situation involving sinhalese differently"?

Also, this hostage situation has several different dimensions from one in which Sinhalese would be the prisoners. Among them are: 1. some of these people are being held prisoner against their will by the LTTE (escapes have said that), 2. others may be Mahaveer families who want to help the LTTE, and 3. all of them are Tamils whose bodies...if killed...would be useful for propaganda by the LTTE...so the LTTE could kill them too. So, it is not really useful to engage in these HYPOTHETICAL WHAT IF DISCUSSIONS, that neither of us can substantiate. You make assertions, that no one can prove or disprove with any reasonable certainty. So, why should I get drawn into that? I just focused on items that seemed to be CONCRETE..apparently they were not either.

"You ignore the essence of what I said which is that our leaders have to be more responsible in their statements and we have to be more sensitive to the feelings of Tamils in general even in a blog such as this so as not to arouse their hatred."

I did not ignore the "ESSENCE" of your response, in fact I responded to the fallacy of it. If the GOSL made a statement that they can assure the safety of these civilians, when anyone can see they have no control over the situation to be able to say so, then if civilians die,

1. they will be held criminally accountable for the deaths of people who could have been "saved" as the GOSL stated at the start

2. they will be called incompetent for not knowing that there would be deaths

3. they will be accused of lying just to placate the masses, and their integrity will be questioned.

"No matter what we say there's a general consensus of sympathy for the LTTE among Tamils, even the very moderate ones. So what do you do about them? "

Agreed. There will certainly be some Tamils who are so wedded to their separatist aparthied aspirations to be achieved at the expense of the Sinhala people, that they will mourn and groan forever. There is nothing that can be done to win these people; they can only be controlled and their aspirations made unachievable by ETHNIC INTEGRATION to achieve a uniform mix of populations everywhere in the country, when they cannot claim to be the dominant population of any part of the country. Until, that is achieved, there will have to be a strong military/ intelligence presence islandwide to detect, arrest, confront and eliminate any threats posed by these people. Some of these incurably unhappy people should emigrate to Tamil Nadu, or elsewhere, if they are emotionally incapable of living as equal citizens with other Sri Lankans.

BTW, some 38 SL Tamils filed a suit claiming discrimination against Tamil Nadu police only last week. Also, for economic, caste, and other reasons, life in Tamil Nadu is much worse than in Sri Lanka for ordinary people, accustomed to a better life in Sri Lanka. Remember the illegal Tamil immigrant problem Sri Lanka had? Well, the situation is even worse in Tamil Nadu now, and they would love to come to Sri Lanka once we have the violence quelled and start handing out public benefits and rights to one and all!

There are also many other Tamils, who have no love at all for the LTTE, and have suffered at their hands. These people, even if they nurse Tamil-only aspirations, will adjust to co-existence as Sri Lankan citizens.

There are still another group of Tamils, who never supported the Eelam struggle (I know a few of them); they are ECSTATIC at the defeat of the LTTE, and perhaps, getting back the lands they lost to the LTTE in Jaffna!

Bottomline is, we can't accommodate special Tamil aspirations at the expense of the common aspirations of the Sri Lanka people as a whole. No special rights for anyone. No Eelam, in particular.

White van/Gonibilla as some in the blog suggest? Ask them to pack their bags and leave? How practical are those suggestions?

These may or may not be practical suggestions; certainly they quelled the JVP uprising at huge cost in lives, but I know they are not acceptable ethical suggestions. We don't have to resort to such methods, if ETHNIC INTEGRATION is immediately pursued as a goal, there is an omnipresent defense force, and the laws of the land against terrorism, separatism, and unpatriotic, anti-national, seditious activities are strictly enforced.

We can start by not antagonizing them any further with racist words and chest baeting. We can show some respect and sentiments towards the human cost of war, not just on our side. As for myself, watching that video on youtube truly hit home hard. I woudn't wish that on my worst enemy.

I don't know what video you are referring to; some are bad indeed. However, if you are referring to LTTE cadre, over 100,000 Sri Lankans (sinhalese, Tamils, Moslems) have been blown up and hacked into pieces by these monsters, and I am nor going to weep for them.

All the patriotic chest beating that you deprecate, well that is the BIG DIFFERENCE between now and the past. The people have had enough of bleeding heart humanism that did nothing to protect ALL of our people on the one hand, and arranged to give a large part of our country away to a monstrous enemy on the other.

We have to keep alive this patriotism, and inculcate more patritism, in the hearts and minds of our people; it is the only bulwark against the destruction of our country and the enslavement of our people. I will do everything I can in the remaining years of my life to help keep patriotism alive in Sri Lanka. If you don't see it that way, I'll weep for you.

Ananda-USA, it wasn't my intension to belittle our forces or accuse our leaders, but to pose a moment to reflect upon the terrible cost of this war and what we could do in the very least as humans to avoid further bitterness among races.

I'll accept your intentions, but I didn't accuse you of intending to belittle the GOSL. If it appeared that way, I am truly sorry.

What I did say, was that you should not expect the GOSL to give assurances of civilian safety that with all honesty they cannot give in the current situation. Ask yourself first how you would proceed if you were the decision maker, knowing that political enemies of all kinds are just waiting for you to mess up any one thing, to pounce on you and bring all the success of this war of liberation to nought. So, they are conservative, and what is more, they are correct, in my view.

The GOSL is being more humane, and more careful, about civilians than any other Govt tackling terrorism, confronted with a similar situation. For example, Israel bombed Hamas in Gaza killing over 1500 civilians, the US Army at Fallujah in Iraq a few years ago, gave an ultimatum for civilians to move out, and levelled the city, the US Air Force regularly bombs Al-Quaida/ Taliban along the Afghan/Pakistan border, hitting civilians as well, and drawing protests from the Afghan President Karzai.

In fact, if successive GOSLs had not provided for civilians in uncleared areas, allowed NGOs & INGOs etc to supply the LTTE, this war may have been ended years ago. In my view, it is the compassionate psychology of the Sinhala-Buddhist mind that extended this war for 30 years, until now, instead of ending it in 4 years or so, like the US Civil war.

Cluster bomb attack on civillian hospital - independence day of terrorist state - sh*t lanka

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – The United Nations says 52 civilians have been killed and 80 injured in the past one day in Sri Lanka's northern war zone.

U.N. spokesman Gordon Weiss also says cluster bombs struck Wednesday at the last functioning hospital in the area where Tamil Tiger rebels are fighting a last-gasp battle for survival.

He says 52 civilians were killed and 80 wounded in fighting Tuesday inside and outside a government-designated safe zone where it had pledged not to strike.

It was the first time cluster bombs are known to have been used in the government's push to defeat the Tamil Tigers since the collapse of a cease-fire in 2006.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Cluster bombs struck the last functioning hospital in Sri Lanka's northern war zone Wednesday, the U.N. said, as the country's president declared that the military has nearly crushed a 25-year Tamil rebellion for a separate homeland.

U.N. spokesman Gordon Weiss said 15 U.N. staffers and 81 family members are trapped in the Puthukkudiyiruppu area, where the hospital was hit by cluster bombs. He said 90 percent of patients have been evacuated to the north including critically injured patients and the medical staff.

"The last remaining medical facility inside the Vanni pocket has been effectively closed," he said. Vanni is the area where the remaining fighting is taking place.

It is the first time cluster bombs are reported to have been used since a Norwegian-brokered cease-fire broke down in 2006 and the government launched its offensive.

"We hold the gravest fears for the safety of our staff and their families," Weiss told reporters.

It was not clear who launched the cluster bombs.

The hospital is located in the rapidly-shrinking war zone where about 250,000 civilians are trapped along with the Tamil Tiger rebels, who had been fighting since 1983 for a separate homeland for the country's minority Tamils. About 70,000 people have been killed in the civil war between the rebels and the Sinhalese-dominated government.

The government did not immediately respond to the cluster bomb report, though the military previously has insisted that it has not targeted civilians.

All defense spokespeople were at a parade to mark the country's independence from colonial power Britain 61 years ago.

In a nationally-televised Independence Day speech from the parade viewing stand, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said many foreign governments had said it was not possible to destroy the Tamil Tiger rebels, who had built up a sophisticated military in addition to a suicide squad.

For nearly three decades "we were forced to celebrate independence with an illegal armed group operating in our country ... Today we have been able to nearly destroy terror," Rajapaksa said.

"Our heroic forces today have given us an opportunity to celebrate independence in a country nearly free from terrorism," he said in a speech from a heavily guarded beachfront promenade before watching a grand military parade.

In recent months, Sri Lankan troops have routed the Tamil Tiger rebels from most areas of the de facto homeland they had carved out in the north and the east for the country's minority Tamils. They are now cornered into a small area in the country's northeast and a defeat appears imminent

"At this moment I urge all Sri Lankans from all communities who fled the country because of the war to return to their motherland," Rajapaksa said. He did not elaborate but the reference was apparently to hundreds of thousands of minority Tamils who have sought political asylum in the West.

Heavy fighting is still raging in the sliver of land north of Mullaittivu town. Aid workers and other officials say they are getting reports of heavy casualties but the reports are impossible to verify independently because the government has banned journalists from going there.

The Puthukkudiyiruppu hospital has been hit continuously by a barrage of artillery since Sunday, leaving at least 12 people dead.

Dr. Thurairajah Varatharajah, the top health official in the war zone, estimated last week that more than 300 civilians had been killed in the recent fighting, something the government has denied. Varatharajah has not updated his estimate.

The government accuses the rebels of holding the civilians against their will as human shields, a charge the rebels deny.

About 50,000 soldiers from four divisions are closing in on a force of about 3-4,000 LTTE fighters (most of them recent conscripts). LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran appears to have gotten away, along with the three single engine aircraft the LTTE is known to have. While the army has captured six LTTE airfields in the last few weeks, there has been no sign of those three aircraft (which exist partly to get senior leaders in and out of the island). Prabhakaran is a wanted man in India, but he has many admirers in southern India and in expatriate Tamil communities throughout the West.
Troops captured Visuamadu, and are seeking to destroy the remaining LTTE artillery, which is being used to fire into a no-combat zone the army has established for escaping Tamil civilians. It's uncertain what the LTTE endgame is here. As usual, they are trying to play the victim to the international media. But past LTTE scams now come back to haunt them, and they have little credibility. The Sri Lankan government expects the remaining thousand or so veteran LTTE fighters to soon ditch their weapons and uniforms, and attempt to blend in with the 200,000 Tamil civilians the LTTE have been holding (often at gunpoint). The LTTE will then undertake a guerilla war campaign. That won't be so easy. The LTTE lost control of the east coast of Sri Lanka last year, and efforts to get a guerilla war going there have not been very successful. The Sri Lankan Tamils are tired of the decades of fighting, at least for now.

India orders return of 8 Sri Lankan airmen

Special Correspondent

Move follows Chief Minister Karunanidhi’s request

CHENNAI: India on Tuesday ordered the return of eight Sri Lankan Air Force men from the Air Force Station at Tambaram here.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, who came to know of their arrival after they approached the Selaiyur police station for signing in a register, directed the Chief Secretary to bring this to the notice of the Union government and wanted the eight sent back.

The Centre, accepting the Chief Minister’s request to send them back, ordered their return. The airmen, all aged about 18 and 19, recently passed out of the Tambaram Air Station. They had returned to complete the formalities and some paperwork, an IAF officer told The Hindu.

He pointed out that the IAF, especially the Tambaram station, provided training to youth of friendly countries just like other defence training establishments, including the Officers’ Training Academy at St. Thomas Mount here. The friendly countries included Sri Lanka and other member-nations of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation and the Non-Aligned Movement.
“Nothing alarming”

The officer said there was nothing alarming or secret about the arrival of the Sri Lankan youth. They went to the police station only to enter their names in the register as part of procedure.

They maybe determined but they're neither courageous nor smart.//

I am going to stand by what I said. I was not referring to LTTE but Tamils. If you have seen and talked to people like Prof. Mahalingam who taught us mechanics, machines and vibration during my Peradeniya time and student like Shanthi Kumar who got 98% average marks for all papers during full four year engineering course, in fact he was awarded EOE Perera gold medal for his achievements that is record not beaten yet. We must call spade a spade irrespective to the war.

They are courage’s too. The way they fight, the way they sacrifice valuable life to the cause, though the cause is not true, which they believe just true and noble, the way they handle media and launching propaganda. Who can say they are not courageous.

We should not underestimate our enemy. They have perfected their strategies over last 25 years. This is not over yet. We may win few battles militarily but war will continue.

If we relax thinking they are not smart and courageous, we will be in for a surprise.

civilians are given weapons

2hr weapons training

forcibly deployed to the FDL's

People who retreat are shot by LTTE

people who are shooting at the army are shot by the army

and Tamilnet is saying sumtin about cluster bombs (cluster bomb casualties with gun shot wounds)

people who surrender to the army are sent to rehabilitation camps and will get a new start for a peaceful life!!

the answer for problems--> stop forcible recruitment of civilians and let them go to Gov controlled areas

Exodus triggers as LTTE push civilians to the battlefront- Mullaittivu

Despite LTTE terrorists tightening grip over civilians entrapped in the Mullaittivu district, people are fleeing in large numbers toward the liberated zones under security forces, military said. The latest reported was the arrival of over 264 civilians from Puthukkudiyirippu at the safe region in Visuamadu, this morning (Feb 4). "It seems that the people have made their intentions clear to the terrorist outfit: independence now or never", a defence observer said citing Wanni military sources.

The people were forcibly dragged by the LTTE to the battlefront with weapons to man LTTE forward defences, military sources said citing a few escapees. "No longer can these innocent people undergo such unprecedented hardships and they have now realized the true liberation the terrorist outfit has brought after three decades", the official further said.

According to available information the civilian exodus is on the rise while military continue with preparations to meet the influx with food rations, purified water, medicine, clothes etc. Civilian welfare centers at Kilinochchi, Visuamadu and Nelukkulama are kept readied to facilitate the civilian influx. Latest reports received from the battlefront states that 50 more civilians are expected to arrive at the IDP center at Visuamadu.

He said, "whatever the number of countries in the world, there is no place that is safer to anyone than the land of ones birth. The time has now dawned for the Sri Lankans who have left their country, because of this unfortunate battle that had dragged for more than 20 years, to return to their land of birth and to the places they lived in. On this important occasion, on behalf of the entire Sri Lankan nation, I make an open invitation to all Sri Lankans - Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher, Malay and of all other communities, who left this country because of war to return to your motherland."

My Dear Mothers, Fathers & Children,

I announce with pride that we have raised the National Flag today over a motherland that is being united in keeping with the heart felt wishes and prayers of our people. My dear people who through sacrifice of life have come forward to defend the freedom of our land; and through their blessings and every thought supported that struggle; and my dear children who have eagerly looked towards the struggle for freedom in our land,

61 years ago our great motherland was freed from the clutches of British Imperialism. The British granted us Independence on February 4th 1948, after 500 years during which our country was controlled wholly or partly by the Portuguese, Dutch and the British.

By this time our people had struggled against colonial rule in 1818 and 1848. Our great heroes such as Monaravila Keppettipola and Puran Appu had scarified their lives in these struggles. Whenever we think of our freedom we always recall the greatness of such heroes.

However, due to our motherland being subjected to repeated foreign incursions and invasions there were many challenges to the progress of our nation. The unbroken progress of our knowledge and technology was suddenly interrupted. With the dawn of Independence from British rule on February 4th 1948, we gained the opportunity to move towards progress in a manner that was inherent to our nation. However, we failed to lead our society, handed to us with divisions, into the proper path of unity and progress. Therefore, as we completed 30 years after independence we saw the birth of separatist, racist and terrorist politics that sought to divide our motherland.

Friends,

Although every year in the past we have commemorated our Independence, through 30 years during this period we have lived in the midst of an illegal, armed, terrorist movement. Therefore, throughout this period we could not celebrate true Freedom.

Due to this terrorism the Sinhala and Muslim people who lived in the north were compelled to flee from their traditional lands. This period saw the massacre of Buddhist worshipers near the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, at Anuradhapura. At Kaththankudi, Muslims were killed while worshiping in their mosque. There were terrorist attacks on the pinnacle of Buddhist worship, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy. Innocent people were collectively massacred in many places of this land.

That is not all, for the first time in the history of our land the tiger terrorists carried out ethnic cleansing. They sought to establish a fascist state in which the Sinhala and Muslim people, as well as the Tamil people who were not prepared to bow before them, would not live. A large number of Democratic leaders of the Tamil people were killed by the terrorists. Similarly, many of our national leaders were assassinated by the forces of terror. The entire country was terrorized.

Friends,

Our country became the victim of the most powerful terrorist organization in the world. We had come to the verge of the separatist terrorists achieving their goal of dividing the country and establishing a separate state of Tamil Eelam. We were being compelled by some administrators of that time to except the so-called peace brought about by the division of the country, and the victory of the forces of terror. Many foreign forces attempted to persuade us that the path to achieving peace was to be subjugated by a terrorist organization that had power on land, sea and air as well as ruthless suicide killers.

Together with this, some international institutions sought to show our country as a failed State, which pained the hearts and minds of all of us at the unfortunate fate that was sought to be bestowed on the land of our birth.

Friends,

We were finally challenged by this unfortunate fate that our great motherland could no more bear.

In the Presidential election held in 2005 you brought me to the leadership of our land. It was to battle against this misfortune of fate; to defeat it and to bring victory to the nation over it. It was to defeat the foundations of a cowardly peace based on the victory of separatist terror, and instead establish a genuine and dignified peace for our land.

In the Presidential Election of 2005, you handed to me and to our Government the challenge of being victorious over the threat that time had raised against us. We faced this daring challenge with a determination to somehow achieve victory over it.

It is said that failure is the very mother of success. You are aware that most governments and leaders of the past attempted to solve this problem with separatist terror, through military means and discussions. It is no secret at all these efforts were unsuccessful. It is these failures that led me to decide to move towards success. This is what I stated in my policy statement - the Mahinda Chintana - presented for the 2005 Presidential Election:

"It is my intention to critically examine the merits and demerits of the steps taken so far to deal with this complex problem and consider a fresh approach. In doing so, the fundamental platform that I would base my initiative would be an undivided country, a national consensus and an hounourable peace".

We have now been able, within a short span of two and half years, to almost completely defeat the cowardly forces of terror that had wrapped our entire nation in fear through several decades. This great victory has been brought to our country through our Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, the Police Special Task Force and Civil Defence Corps carrying out the task before them, jointly and with great dedication.

Our heroic forces have given us the opportunity today to celebrate the anniversary of our Independence in a country freed, after many years, from the dark shadow of terrorism.

Friends,

We are all aware that there have been betrayals and subjugations throughout our history. This reminds us of many infamous names. At the same time are we also reminded today of the bravery, national pride and patriotism that was seen in our great kings such as Dutugemunu, Gajaba and Vijayabahu.

Our forces have protected the great heroism and dignity of the past and handed it to the future. It was no easy task to destroy the threat to the unitary nature and freedom of our country from the LTTE that was described as the most powerful terrorist organization in the world.

Our troops have given us the opportunity to see the dawn of an honourable peace for the country. They have sacrificed their flesh, blood, sinews and life itself to bring this great historic opportunity to our motherland. Our troops were able to carry forward the battle against terror with great care so as not to cause harassment to the innocent Tamil people. The dignified peace that is now dawning upon us becomes greater and more unique than the peace enjoyed by the people of other countries, because it is built on the immense sacrifice of these heroes.

Friends,

There are good reasons behind this victory. The people contributed to this victory without any differences, in the face of many economic hardships. They correctly understood that we have launched a proper battle for the defeat of separatist terrorism. But for the sacrifice of their children to the armed forces, police and civil defence corps in such large numbers by our mothers and fathers, as never before seen in our history, this victory would not be possible. Their immense commitment was not in vain. It is these sacrifices that have enabled the National Flag to fly with pride over the entire country today.

Our troops gave us this victory through their own skills, knowledge and expertise. Our forces did not obtain the assistance of any foreign experts. Similarly, our forces had a certain expertise of their own. It is their refusal to say no, on any occasion. They always thought that "we should do this somehow for our country". Our country has achieved these victories because they had the courage to think in such manner. Do not forget that in most countries where separatist terrorists have been active, they have achieved victory. However, In Sri Lanka we have been able to defeat terrorism and separatism and safeguard the unitary nature of our State.

Whatever the number of countries in the world, there is no place that is safer to anyone than the land of ones birth. The time has now dawned for the Sri Lankans who have left their country, because of this unfortunate battle that had dragged for more than 20 years, to return to their land of birth and to the places they lived in. On this important occasion, on behalf of the entire Sri Lankan nation, I make an open invitation to all Sri Lankans - Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher, Malay and of all other communities, who left this country because of war to return to your motherland.

Friends,

I am confident that in a few days we will decisively defeat the terrorist force that many repeatedly kept saying was invincible. However, we should not think that with this alone we have overcome all challenges before us.

Since independence we have achieved good results in some sectors. We have obtained a satisfactory position on child health and education. 97% of our children obtain admission to schools for education. At a time when in most countries of the world a free health service and free education have been denied to their people, we as a government are dedicated to carry out these social responsibilities.

However, although there are several such matters about which we can be pleased there are many more challenges to be overcome, too.

It is necessary to provide a more productive education to our children, which is suited to needs of the progress of our country. Wherever poverty raises its head it should be overcome. It is necessary to see the emergence of a public service with different attitudes. We should bring the public service to the position when it considers the people as its master. Today, we all face the challenge of bringing about a country that has good governance and prosperity, leaving no room for corruption and waste.

Friends,

We are today a nation that has defeated a powerful enemy that stood before us. Similarly, we should have the ability to defeat all internal enemies that are found in our midst. We should be ready to change as it is necessary to meet these new challenges. What is best is to be united as one nation, to see the dawn of the proper social, economic, cultural and political goals of society.

Today, there is a new vibrancy in our National Flag. There is a new resonance in our National Anthem. The National Flag that our heroic troops took to the north flutters in the hands of the people of the north. Our entire nation is now united in the shade of the National Flag, conscious of the need to achieve victory over the new challenges before us. They love their country more than at any other time in our history.

Friends,

We should be ready to properly grasp and not waste the opportunity that history has presented to us after 61 years of freedom from colonial rule, to once again raise our country to the dignity it deserves.

The nation expects a new future, and a future of change. A future where the unpleasant experiences that we jointly faced in the recent past are not repeated. It is time to stop the refrain that we "cannot" and we "don't have". The remnants and leftovers of subjugation should be erased from our minds. We should look towards the future as a people with a proud and glorious history. Do not strain to demonstrate subjugation and servitude. Rather, strive to demonstrate your freedom and non-servitude, to rise with dignity of a citizen who equally loves the Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher, Malay and all others who makeup our nation. The sowing of discord belongs to the past. The future belongs to those who sow the seeds of unity. The spread of social injustice is of the past. The future is for the building of social justice.

How can it be difficult for us who were able to defeat separatist terrorism that many said was invincible, to build this new future in our motherland? However, difficult it may be, doing justice by the Sri Lankan nation has no other path than the determination to achieve it.

More than anything else I have faith in the spirit and pride of the Sri Lankan nation. Our heroes of war confirmed this belief of mine. We move towards an era of national reawakening and commit our service to it because, of this trust in our nation.

Friends,

What is before us is a century of expectations. If we are able to leave the stage of history as those who have fulfilled the expectation of the nation, what more satisfaction can one have? Let us all go towards realizing that great satisfaction.

In that march ahead, should we hesitate to say what has to be said? No. Should we hesitate to do what needs doing? No. Or else, would it be possible for us to bring about a Sri Lanka that is free of terrorism? In overcoming the challenges of the future too, we shall work in the same manner.

Friends,

I do not believe that the true extent of our development is seen on the bill-boards in our cities. I believe that the full measure of our progress can only been seen when the faces of our people and our children light up with joy and satisfaction. It is necessary to work hard to achieve this.

We took the greatest risk in the battle to defeat separatist terror. It was the risk of life. Our Defence Secretary and the Commander of our Army did not abandon their responsibilities even having faced terror attacks from suicide killers. During this period the forces of terror preyed on the lives two of our most senior Ministers. However, in the face of such danger we did not show that we lacked the courage to face up to the enemy. At a time when their fellow soldiers were dying from enemy attacks in the battle field, our troops did not abandon the battle for fear of their lives. Had we not the courage to face up to such dangers would it have been possible for us to safeguard our country? Similarly, I wish to state, that in the struggles ahead to build a new country we shall not fear to take necessary decisions in the face of any dangers that we may face.

We shall also in the same manner enter the struggle to establish stability and good governance in our country, free of corruption and waste. We must be able to change as required by the challenges placed before us by time. If we cannot do so we should be ready to leave the stage.

Friends,

A Former Governor of the World Bank James Wolfenson said thus on July 5th 1998: "Wherever social and economic expectations have been destroyed, in such a place there is only a small space for peace. Similarly, there is also very small space for stability".

I am today a firm believer in this. We are now building a country where people will not die through terrorism. Similarly, we should transform this into a country where the social and economic expectations of the people are not shattered. If not, there will only be a very small space for peace and stability.

It will be possible for the victories of war to be lost by war, only if such military victories are not consolidated through the plough. Therefore, we should be ready to direct our country towards a campaign that will take us to social, economic, cultural and political progress.

It is our responsibility to bring our people to the awareness that sovereignty lies with them. If the people do not believe that what is done is in keeping with their needs and expectations, the value of their sovereignty will be diminished. What change can we bring to the country without seeing the dawn of the day when the people realize that they are the real owners of the agricultural land, the assets of nature, the environment and all assets of the ocean and fisheries?

What other path is there to demonstrate the power of sovereignty, other than giving to the poor a standard of life under which they have land to live, a home, a good education for their children and proper opportunities for employment? What purpose is there to them in any power that does not bring about a change their lives? Ensuring the security of people's sovereignty means ensuring social security; increasing the space for peace and widening the space for stability. This is how we should protect the peace and stability we have won. I believe we can achieve this, too.

Friends,

In conclusion, permit me to say something very special on this day of national pride. I call upon you to stand on your feet with the firm conviction that we can take our country to future victories based on the experiences and the knowledge we have gained in the struggles we have won to date.

Let us be ready to raise our country to new heights as people full of enthusiasm, but with tranquility of mind; with the necessity for speed, yet with proper method. Let us not fear any challenges. Let us have the courage to realize our expectations.

Similarly, let us extend the cooperation of the entire nation to the people of the north and the east who suffered under the grip of separatist terror for many years, to once again step towards satisfaction and freedom in life.

Let us come forward both in word and deed to bestow upon them the kindness, friendship and prosperity they deserve.

This 61st anniversary of independence has given us the opportunity to realize the pride and dignity of our freedom. The time is now ready for the battle to raise Sri Lanka to the dignity of a country that is energetic, powerful, virtuous and wise. Let us as patriotic Sri Lankans achieve success in that battle too, without delay. Let us dedicate ourselves to bequeath this true freedom to our country.

Friends,

I respect the maxim that the motherland and ones own mother are comparable to paradise. At a time when our motherland is united under a single banner, I invite all parties to come together irrespective of ethnicity, community and party differences, giving the opportunity to all to do their duty by the motherland. What greater satisfaction can Mother Lanka have than all of us being the children of a single mother? I, therefore, appeal to you to join us to bring that great satisfaction to our motherland.

Let us look at all the children of our motherland - Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, Burgher, Malay and of all other communities, spread throughout our land, and living with no divisive thoughts among them. They look upon us with great expectations. They question us and hold us to task. They seek their future from us. They are the future of this land. May you have the strength and courage to take our country in a new direction on their behalf.

May you all receive the Blessings of the Noble Triple Gem.

i think people need more than no war to return. first and foremost, people will need to see law-and-order and a fair justice system. this is so that for example, if son of Mervin Silva can pistol whip you while quietly having a coffee somewhere, he can be taken to courts and punished under the law of the land. the required conditions are not really there at the moment mr president.

[[[I too beleive in Ethnic Integration of all as Sri Lankan. But some mistake it for Asimilation. I think most Tamils fear that after they loose the uprising they will get Asimilated to become Sinhalayas.]]]

whether we like it or not assimilation’s gonna happen (to a large extent) in the north & east. maybe not in colombo. the post LTTE sinhala/muslim influence in northeast ( backed by STF & SLA) are going to be so powerful that ordinary tamils in these areas will choke. That’s gonna be the price of non-negotiation.

Their violence prone uneducated young & children who were used to LTTE military lifestyle based on foreign easy $ will be fucked. They’ll be worth almost nothing commercially. They’ll end up at the bottom rung of the social ladder, living on handouts or illegal activity/terror.

Looks like the Muslims stand to get the most benefit due to their tamil lang skill, superior education & acceptance among sinhala.

in sharp contrast Tamil mentality will be scarred terribly by the foolish way they let thalaivar manipulate them, made them scarifice everything & made suckers outa them. a massive toll on self confidence.

by walking out of negotiations with mahinda, stubborn as a mule fat pig's wiped out the entire future of the northeast tamil population forever. Amen.

They’ll take hundreds of years to recover. Scars are too deep.

if somebody wants an extreme example of the terrible cost of unending stubbornness, fat pig reigns supreme.

in a way thalaivar & foreign based Diaspora has delivered the final solution-

TO THE SINHALA MAJORITY.

It’s funny that the least to suffer in the war is tamil diaspora who made all the violence possible. The most to suffer were local tamils & the final winners the sinhala & muslim.

It proves that tamil Diaspora were just middlemen playing with innocent lives of others expecting great returns on bloody investment & self ego.

The investment bank they trusted was FAT PIG & TERROR COMPANY (PVT) LTD.

ha ha ha! Talk about Tamil’s being smart. Yea, they may have the uni degrees. But smart?

Nopes. No way.

So thanks to fat pig & Diaspora the SL Tamils suffered the most, lost everything they gained & get absolutely nothing extra in return. what a liberation!!!

ha ha ha!

LTTE may carry out a low scale insurgency after the war & will die in their hundreds if not thousands. after fighting LTTE which had gun boats, planes, heavy arti & a conventional army, these uprisings will be chicken feed for SLA.

the remaining vestiges of the LTTE will be minced meat.

Tamils have no one to blame but their very own brains.

Even if our army killed him no Peelamist will believe it neither LTTP.

So machan there could be two scenarios,

Scenario 1
Real one is already dead. Fake one is in action.

Scenario 2
Fake one took control from Real one. Then Fake one got caught to areal attack and got killed. No LTTP believe in real one caus they thing he is fake.
- Machan ape raja kale kathawak thibune meka wage.

Either way that is why they are loosing the battle.

Because too many fakes. :)

Not really. My posts vary in length according to the topic, and how much I need to say, and the need to keep going without breaking the train of thought. I am sorry it is difficult for you. You are not alone, a lot of people seem to have difficulty reading an extended post. C'est la' vie.

I too beleive in Ethnic Integration of all as Sri Lankan. But some mistake it for Asimilation. I think most Tamils fear that after they loose the uprising they will get Asimilated to become Sinhalayas.

ETHNIC INTEGRATION, as most of us who advocate it here mean, does not mean mixing on a genetic basis. That is, it does not mean intermarriage between Sinhala and Tamil people, although when men and women are neighbors and work together, they do fall in love and marry. That is OK, but that is not what we mean here.

What me mean by ETHNIC INTEGRATION is that government and public policies are implemented to homogenize the distribution of all ethnic communities throughout the land, as far as possible, towards the average ethnic distribution in the country as whole. Thus, ideally, we would have the same percentage of Sinhala, Tamil, Moslem and Burgher people in every province, district, city, town, village, school, in work places, public institutions, defense forces, and so on.

That does not mean all ethnic diversity and richness would be ground down into a uniform grey. The richness of individuals own ethnicities would find expression in the proper sphere: in their homes, at their places of worship, in community centers, in ethnic restaurants, etc.

The benefit is that no region of the country would be dominantly mono-ethnic, and no such community be able to claim that region as a separate mono-ethnic state. Every community is at each and every location. This also means, that children of all communities would learn together, play together, grow up together during their formative years. Adults of all communities would work together, grieve together, eat together, and help each other. In this way, people of all communities would get to see and appreciate our common humanity, rather than the abstract differences defined sharply by spatially separate existences out of contact with each other.

In the US, where I live, I have as neighbors Anglo-Saxon, Chinese, Indian (Sikh), Hispanic and African American families. We often meet at neighborhood parties, at work in our gardens and garages, and strike up personal friendships. As a result, I don't see my neighbors as fundamentally different from myself. This was largely how it was when I was growing up as a child in Sri Lanka in a suburb of Colombo. Through such contacts you begin to empathize with people and to instinctively recognize that our differences are only superficial and at the core we are basically the same.

Unfortunately, in the past in Sri Lanka, this kind of contact between communities was attained only in the major cities, making it easy for isolated communities to demonize each other: unseen, unheard, untouched. Through a policy of ethnic integration, backed by strictly enforced laws against communal violence, we are proposing to make intimate contact between different communities an ubiquitous feature in every part of Sri Lanka, and to build a single Sri Lankan identity as one people who have transcended their superficial ethnic biases.

How on earth bloody UN knows about cluster bombs? This is really disturbing.

U.N. spokesman Gordon Weiss said 15 U.N. staffers and 81 family members are trapped in the Puthukkudiyiruppu area, where the hospital was hit by cluster bombs. He said 90 percent of patients have been evacuated to the north including critically injured patients and the medical staff.

TN srike is not successful

{{CHENNAI, India (Reuters) - Protesters called a strike on Wednesday in India's southern state of Tamil Nadu to protest Sri Lanka's military offensive against Tamil Tigers, but many people ignored the call.

Buses, trains and planes were unaffected, while government offices, banks and most offices were open, as people disregarded the protest by a newly-formed coalition of pro-Tamil Tiger parties, the Sri Lankan Tamils Protection Movement.

"Life is normal, buses are plying, attendance in government offices is normal," Chief Secretary S.K. Sripathi said, adding stray incidents of violence had been reported in the state.

Around 60 million Indians in Tamil Nadu have strong historical and cultural ties with Tamils in Sri Lanka. They have been protesting the Sri Lankan government's offensive against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Buses were run with police protection, and security was tightened at government offices after a man killed himself last week by setting himself on fire outside a government office.

About 500 people were arrested across the state for throwing stones at buses and blocking traffic, a police official said.

However, the pro-Tamil Tigers coalition maintained the strike was successful.

"The strike is by and large successful despite government efforts to frustrate it," said P. Nedumaran, leader of the Tamil Nationalist Movement, one of the political groups in the coalition.

The United States and Britain urged a temporary ceasefire in Sri Lanka to evacuate casualties and allow relief into the war zone as the island nation on Wednesday celebrated its independence day.

Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK party, an alliance partner of the Congress-led government, said on Tuesday it would also continue to urge the Indian government toward a settlement in Sri Lanka, where aid agencies say about 250,000 civilians are trapped.

Last week, India's foreign minister visited the Sri Lankan president to discuss safety measures for Tamils, and also cool tensions with Tamil Nadu politicians ahead of Indian general elections scheduled by May.

Guys,

Real fighting is going on. We have had a lot of casualties during the last 48 hours.

Many special units are called in and SF teams are doing all the hard work i heard.
Terras are firing Arti and Heavy mortar non-stop.

Most of the Terras are on suicide missions. They know that they are loosing the game. What they want is to kill the maximum number of our soldiers. It's not easy as we thought. Black Cats have entered the game, and they are fighting really hard.

Unconfirmed source said that the Civilians have stated to come in big numbers.

Karunanidhi's U TURN !!!!!

{{{LTTE lost DMK sympathy long ago: Karunanidhi

Express News Service First Published : 04 Feb 2009 12:59:00 AM ISTLast Updated : 04 Feb 2009 11:43:52 AM ISTCHENNAI: DMK president and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Tuesday said the LTTE had lost the sympathies of the party way back in 1987 itself as its chief V Prabhakaran was planning to adopt a dictatorial form of government in Tamil Eelam for which they were fighting.

The DMK chief made this remark while speaking at the party’s executive committee meeting here.

Recalling the ‘sibling rivalry’ indulged in by the Tigers, killing senior leaders of other groups which were working for the Tamils’ cause, Karunanidhi referred to an interview given by Prabhakaran to a magazine in 1987 wherein he had favoured a dictatorial rule for Tamil Eelam.

“I was shocked to read the reply of Prabhakaran. From then on, I became sick of the Tigers’ war... later, many people were killed by the LTTE and the sympathy towards that movement was dwindling gradually and at one point, it completely vanished,” he said.

To highlight the LTTE cruelty in killing their Tamil brethren, Karunanidhi cited how veteran leader Amirthalilngam was killed in front of his wife. “But the DMK has ignored these incidents... only to help the suffering Tamils in Lanka...but it is being viewed as support to the LTTE...this view is totally wrong...our support is only for the Lankan Tamils and not for individuals there,” he said.}}}

Dr. Ananda-USA

Good post on integration.

Did it come from your heart?

You are at the source of demonizing people on this blog. Yet, you talk about them like an Eelam follower is talking about peace and democracy while writing checks to LTTE.

You can be a good writer, can you have the character? You can only fool the fellow blind patriot community.

[Unfortunately, in the past in Sri Lanka, this kind of contact between communities was attained only in the major cities, making it easy for isolated communities to demonize each other:]

I told you, you pulled the sarong up to cover your face showing your junk to everyone.

Hey guys,

I am watching every news clip on YouTube that LKBNews uploads about "Awasan Satana".

Now most of them have been removed from YouTube saying

"This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by rubavakiny televison limited(govt) . "

Check the wording "Rubavakiny"... Clearly LTTE goons have hoodwinked YouTube to remove the videos to get rid of their embarrassment.

The f*cking a*sholes could not even spell Rupavahini right.

If anyone from the Rupavahini Corporation Reads this Blog, please ask the officials to release a letter to YouTube saying that they have No Objection that YouTube hosting their Video Clips.

I believe that over million of people watched these Video Clips on Awasan Satana daily.

Why we are not using UAV"S and MI24's.They are in a small area. Can be monitored easily.

these buggers are mortivated through brain washing.I don't think any case last fight will be easy.Whoever couldn't escape they know, they have no other choice. Kill as many as they can and die. This will be dangerous of course they have no plans to give up and go back.

Ppl I know in front also state similar stories. There is so much I hear but I prefer it getting out by a professional like DW [even you], as I may be listening to false rumors.

All I like to say is that something big is happening. And it is not really at Challai where I thought it would happen. Mostly in the Puthu surroundings, and notably on TFs coming from south.

And just heard that SLDF found container loads of bicycles, computers and other equipment donated by INGOs and even UN agencies.

I think MOD should find a protocol to bring the cases against each organization such that the heads of SL missions will be prosecuted. Long time ago there was a case against the bigwigs of "Oil-for-*****" program with Sadam. Also there were cases against UN operations in Uganda. We need to raise it such that they isolate culprits.

GR should not "bark" but act. He stated a very strong comment about Sirasa. Being a serious officer, I believe he had evidence. Now he should take the next step. Equally if he had enough evidence he should take on whoever he stated as pussycat supporters. Even an ambassador can be sent back. But you need concrete evidence. If you lack that even GR should Shut the F Up.

For good or bad, Premadasa sent back then British HC, when he found HC interfering his affairs.
