A 30-man LTTE team that breached the 59 Division FDL launched a string of attack this morning killing 15 soldiers in the process. The team had landed in Security Forces dominated Mulaitivu from the Nanthikadal lagoon around 6 a.m. undetected by the Army.
The team launched attacks on an Army Bus, Tractor and two Tanks causing damage to the four vehicles. The team then called in artillery at the FDL and coordinated a strike at the 59 FDL breaching it for a period of time until the Special Forces and Commandos were called in to secure the area. 11 Tigers were also killed in the counter attack, which is still ongoing.
Meanwhile an LTTE plane made a landing around 1.5kms ahead of the 58 Division's FDL at Visuamadu North. A heavy barrage of MBRL fire was immediately directed to the area. No movement was observed from the area following the attack. The Plane had landed on a tar road, further confirming the Army's doubts that it was not always using the landing strips discovered in the area.
In another development, a group of Tiger explosives experts on a mission to blow up the Iranamadu Tank Bund were caught following a daring amphibious operation along with a large quantity of explosives. If the bund was blasted, it could have caused irreparable damage to the area and made the progress of the Army extremely difficult.

BrahMos failed as US shut its eyes in the sky?

KOCHI: DRDO scientists have launched an investigation into the failure of the BrahMos army version missile, especially why its GPS system couldn’t link onboard computers with hovering satellites eventually crippling its guidance system and keeping it frm achieving mission objectives.
The ambit of the probe will also examine why US satellites blinked during the test window, thereby denying the missile the crucial inputs needed for its guidance.
A primary analysis of the January 20 test has shown that the missile, a special version capable of hitting hidden targets like terrorist camps, performed the flight plan but missed the target. The missile was supposed to hit a rather insignificant target hidden among obstructions at the Pokharan range.
“It had an advance seeker which was to home in on the target using GPS data obtained through US satellites.
But it is a mystery why the SCAN technology failed to access the satellites,” said BrahMos sources.
The seeker, an advanced one developed to guide the missile to very insignificant targets, was a success during test flights. The seeker and the new software were tested extensively using fighter aircraft flying at top speeds.
“Once we were confident of their success, we decided to go in for the first test on the missile. But the failure is a mystery,” top sources told to The New Indian Express.The BrahMos special version, in spite of being an Indo-Russian venture, was fully dependent on US satellites. The Russian global positioning network is not usually used by Indian defence agencies for their strategic programmes. “This leads to speculation about why the entire galaxy of US satellites failed to provide signals to the missile. We need to solve the mystery of how the satellites suddenly failed over the Pokharan skies,” sources said.
The probe report is expected by Wednesday and will be submitted to the Defence Minister. Though the failure rattled the Army a bit, sources said its top brass was still for BrahMos missiles. “We will wait for the result of the February 20 tests.
The missile is still the best to hit a defined and designated target like an enemy depot or an airport. The wait-and-watch is only regarding the advanced version of BrahMos,” sources told to The New Indian Express.

Swamy for probe into Muthukumar’s death
CHENNAI: Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy has demanded an inquiry into the death of Muthukumar, who committed suicide in support of Sri Lankan Tamils here.
Addressing reporters here on Monday, Dr. Swamy said he had strong suspicion that Muthukumar was made a scapegoat. He had reliable information that Muthukumar had been assured that he would be saved in time.
The language used in the suicide letter had Sri Lankan Tamil slang. Some Tamil words used in the suicide note were those mostly used by Sri Lankan Tamils. The probe should also look into the burning of national flag at five places in the State.
Terming illegal, the February 4 general strike called by the Sri Lankan Tamil Protection Movement, Dr. Swamy urged the government to arrest those who sponsored the strike under the National Security Act.
The government should not allow a handful of pro-LTTE persons to hold society for ransom.

How Sri Lanka Tamed Its Tigers
By Ishaan Tharoor Tuesday, Feb. 03, 2009
The Sri Lankan army has Asia's longest-running insurgency on the ropes: The separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) movement, long been considered one of the world's most fearsome guerrilla armies, lost its last stronghold at Mullaittivu on Jan. 25, and government officials are now confident of a decisive victory in the civil war that has claimed some 70,000 lives and displaced over a million people since 1983.
The LTTE is short on supplies and fighters, and has gone to ground in an ever ever-shrinking pocket of jungle in the northeast of the country as government forces advance. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Sunday called for the LTTE's surrender, but there is little chance that a rebel movement whose fighters over the years have chosen suicide over capture will go down quietly. (See pictures from inside Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger territory.)
To understand how far the LTTE has fallen, consider the situation just three years ago, when an internationally brokered ceasefire collapsed: At that point, the rebels controlled around 5,800 square miles (15,000 sq. km.) of territory in a mini-state in the island nation's north and east. They had a navy composed of a flotilla of gunboats and transports, and even launched daring strikes on Colombo with their own makeshift airforce. But a sustained government offensive has inflicted defeat after defeat, and that, in turn, has prompted widespread desertions. Today, just over 1,000 fighters, including the LTTE's shadowy, ruthless leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, have retreated into a wilderness of some 350 sq km, and are hemmed in on all fronts by emboldened government troops.
The government offensive has taken a heavy toll on the Tamil civilian population, leaving as many as 250,000 trapped in the war zone and vulnerable to crossfire. (Colombo insists the figure is closer 120,000). As many as 300 civilians have been killed in the last week of fighting, and human rights groups have accused both sides of abuses. The International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) claimed on Sunday that artillery shells landed in a makeshift hospital in rebel territory, killing at least 9 people and wounding 20 injured. And ICRC representative Sarasi Wijeratne in Colombo urged both sides "to allow the immediate evacuation of civilians and allow in the flow of essential medical supplies."
The Sri Lankan military denied shelling any hospitals, and has blamed the LTTE for civilian casualties. The government said Monday that the military campaign was in a "decisive stage", and that it could not "be responsible for the safety and security of civilians still living among LTTE terrorists". Colombo claims the rebels trap civilians in order to use them as human shields. Although the government has demarcated a safe zone north of Mullaittivu, it's unclear how non-combatants might be able to reach the sanctuary. While aid agencies clamor for access to those displaced, neither they nor most journalists have been allowed into conflict areas by either the government or the rebels.
Having brought the LTTE insurgency to the verge of collapse is a triumph for President Rajapaksa, who has revitalized the Sri Lankan armed forces through a massive injection of funds that has boosted everything from tactical capability to morale. Some 20% of the nation's budget is now devoted to military spending (6% of its GDP), and the boost in resources has, over the past nine months, helped the military make steady gains against what had once seemed intractable positions held by the rebels. Some have taken Colombo's example as a message for counterinsurgency efforts elsewhere. On Jan. 16, an editorial in the Wall Street Journal hailed Sri Lanka's successes as proof that wars "on terror" could be won militarily when negotiations prove futile. Diplomatic cooperation from India and the EU proved key in drying up the LTTE's sources of funding, and internal squabbles among the LTTE's leadership led to much of the militants' east wing laying down its arms or changing sides over the past four years.
The LTTE's guerrilla campaign, and its terrorism — which included assassinations, and suicide bombings by militants wearing explosives on their bodies, a tactic pioneered by the movement — aimed at securing an independent state for Sri Lanka's minority Hindu and Christian Tamils, who still face discrimination at the hands of the country's mostly Buddhist Sinhalese majority. More than two decades of conflict have led to allegations of atrocities on both sides — from kidnappings and extrajudicial killings to the recruitment of child soldiers. Various rounds of peace talks, the last held in 2002, failed to reconcile the LTTE with the government. But even with a decisive military victory, Colombo will have to take significant measures to win the peace.
Domestic critics of the Sri Lankan government suggest that the success of the military campaign has spawned a bellicose nationalism that brooks little dissent, and as such has heightened unease within the country's civil society. Journalists and dissidents have felt pressure to remain silent, and the President's brother, tough-talking Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, told local press that he would "chase away" any foreign media deemed to be offering a sympathetic ear to the rebels. Outspoken newspaper editor (and freelance TIME contributor) Lasantha Wickrematunge, whose paper accused the Defense Minister and other prominent politicians of corruption, was last month gunned down by unknown assailants.
But Sri Lanka's murky politics have little to do with its offensive against the LTTE, says Rajiva Wijesinha, who heads up the government agency charged with bringing about a lasting political settlement to the conflict. "After so many years of war, there has been a corrosion of the state," he admits, "but [in this campaign] we have abided by the rules and taken care of our civilians." Once the LTTE is quashed, Wijesinha envisions elections being held in the north and a gradual devolution of power to Tamils who have joined in the peace process. The Indian government, whose ruling coalition depends upon the support of Tamil parties within India, has urged Colombo to deliver on these promises. And there has been some progress: In Sri Lanka's east, competing Tamil parties, which include former LTTE cadres, successfully contested elections there, and the same scenario may emerge in Jaffna, the northern city which is the cultural center of Sri Lanka's Tamils.
Wijesinha cites a government plan to make Jaffna a national center for information technology, as part of a larger development program for Tamil areas. "The city used to be known for its excellence in education," he says. But, to the tens of thousands who are fleeing their homes as artillery fire rains down across the northeast, this vision of prosperity and peace seems painfully far away.

While acknowledging even the support of the general public, none of Sarath Fonseka's votes of thanks in all of his recent speeches mentioned the SLN. No reference whatsoever was made to any contribution from SLN to the military operation. This glaringly obvious lack of acknowledgement of SLN by SLA chief conveys a strong message in no uncertain terms - there is an obvious rift between SLA & SLN.
I learnt of this situation funnily enough from Mahen’s blog. But who can believe that “Nachchikuda recapture” blog? Does anyone know more about this sour relation between SLA & SLN?

I've been a spectator of this blog for a long time. Living a thousand miles away from SL I'm truly grateful for for the latest yet-to-be officially published news/speculation/smoke that you provide.
I'm however saddended by ultra-radical, almost inhumane opinions expressed at times against all tamils and lack of any sentiments whatsoever towards the plight of civilians trapped in LTTE-held areas. For instance, I saw youtube footage where a couple of toddlers were lying on makeshift beds with bloody bandages and as a parent of a 2 year old girl myself, I just couldn't bear to watch it to the finish. If that was my child laying there dying the pain of seeing that alone would have killed me.
There's no question that LTTE is responsible for these atrocities.
But as elected leaders of the entire population of SL MR and co. has a duty to protect these civilians and they have to do better than saying "we can't assure their safety".
From the bottom of my heart I hope SF/GR can find a way of saving the lives of these innocents while achieving their objective.
Even at the risk of being labelled as a traitors these are my two cents.

The full text of the Co-Chairs’ statement follows:
The Tokyo Co-Chairs (Norway, Japan, US and EU) jointly express their great concern about the plight of thousands of internally displaced persons trapped by fighting in northern Sri Lanka. The Co-Chairs call on the LTTE and the Government of Sri Lanka not to fire out of or into the no-fire zone established by the Government or in the vicinity of the PTK hospital (or any other medical structure), where more than 500 patients are receiving care and many hundreds more have sought refuge. They also call on both sides to allow food and medical assistance to reach those trapped by fighting, cooperate with the ICRC to facilitate the evacuation of urgent medical cases, and ensure the safety of aid and medical workers. The LTTE and the Government of Sri Lanka must respect international humanitarian law.
International efforts to persuade the LTTE to allow the civilians freedom of movement have failed. There remains probably only a short period of time before the LTTE loses control of all areas in the North. The LTTE and the Government of Sri Lanka should recognize that further loss of life - of civilians and combatants - will serve no cause.
To avoid further civilian casualties and human suffering, the Co-Chairs:
* call on the LTTE to discuss with the Government of Sri Lanka the modalities for ending hostilities, including the laying down of arms, renunciation of violence, acceptance of the Government of Sri Lanka's offer of amnesty; and participating as a political party in a process to achieve a just and lasting political solution; and
* call on the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE to declare a temporary no-fire period to allow for evacuation of sick and wounded, and provision of aid to civilians.
The Co-Chairs will work with the Government of Sri Lanka, India, the United Nations and others to ensure:
* the internally displaced people from the north are transferred to temporary camps where UN agencies, the ICRC, and humanitarian organizations will have full access and the IDPs will be treated according to international standards and resettled in their original homes as soon as possible; and
* an inclusive dialogue to agree on a political settlement so that lasting peace and reconciliation can be achieved.

There is a rumour that Hela Urumaya is trying to pass an anti religious conversion bill. If this bill was in effect during the time of king Devanampiyathissa, Si Lanka wouldn’t be a Buddhist country today! Perhaps the bill is only about converting people from Buddhism and not to Buddhism. I hope Sri Lanka won’t be another Saudi Arabia in a few years time with regards to its policy on freedom of religion/conscience.

You need not look further than a few pages back to see derogatory terms such as "sakkiliya" used on tamils. On many occasions I have seen comments to the tune of "Kill all tamils". This kind of racial hatred is exactly what we dont need at this hour. Lest we will win the war but lose the justification for a unitary nation at the end of the military offensive. So in victory we must be humble or show some humility at the very least.

Yes it would mean we would have to offer something in return. But this could be a "token" gesture without loosing much. It certainly won't be a cease fire. We have passed the point of no return when it comes to a cease fire. The LTTE are now reduced to worse than beggars who cannot be choosers.
What Tamils made the huge mistake was that they failed to offset the two scumbags - Karuna and Jeya - from the TN politics.

An Anti-Conversion Bill does not prevent anyone being converted from one religion to the other through dialog and acceptance, which becomes a conscious decision of an idividual.
Such Bill has been brought to protect vulnerable of the society by preventing any conversion attempts through 'unethical means'.
There are hundreds of 'unscrupulous and unethical tactics are being used to convert mainly Buddhists and Hindu's to various Christian factions. This goes like wildfire throughout in Sri Lanka harming the whole social fabric.
It is worse in areas that are being hit by war, because these elements prey on the vulnerable and poor.
Yes, in deed, the 'unethical conversions' should be prevented (similar to bringing laws to prevent people conducting Pyramid Scams).
It will not prevent anyone changing religions based on their judgment made through conscious.
Hope you would understand the difference between the two.
Due to LTTE activities (should I say atrocities) over the past 30 years, the trust towards the Tamil people has been most understandably damaged. There is no point crying about the repercussions this broken trust brings about in the shorter term.
If all who call themselves Sri Lankans focus their efforts on repairing this broken trust (without complaining about the consequences) that would expedite the healing process between the two communities.
Naturally, there should be an extra effort and a “Lion” share of contribution from the Tamil community to rebuild that trust.
As for those who do not (or cannot) call themselves Sri Lankans or find it impossible to identify with the concept of being Sri Lankan, you should pack your bags and depart our Pukka shores. You will be the thorns in the side of Sri Lanka and you will be the biggest hindrance to our social progress. You may even be the cause for a future LTTE.

The entire LTTE Prison complex spreading over five acres in extent has been fenced with barbed wire rolls to a height of about 10 ft and includes tiny cells, made of concrete and cement with only thin openings for ventilation. All the metal doors to the chambers can be padlocked from the outside as the photos depict.
Bringing memories of age-old royal punishments (Dandukanda) meted out to traitors in our old kingdoms were a pair of metal handcuffs, found weilded to the ground with concrete, inside one of the dark Torture Chambers in the complex. (see photo)
The entire complex has been guarded through four turrets of about 30-40 ft from all four corners of the precincts. A huge canopy-type metal structure without any air openings appeared to be a heating chamber where LTTE traitors would have been confined to, from time to time, depending on the nature of their offence. Perhaps, it could have been heated using generators as a method of severe punishment thrust to those traitors by putting them into the chamber, the ground troops maintained.
In addition, a huge metal cage and an underground bunker were also uncovered from the complex. It is believed the prisoners, defying LTTE orders might have ended up in those two places too, similar to those confined to the one said above regarding the metal canopy-type chamber. }}}

The main opposition UNP said yesterday it was absurd for the government to say the party was late in supporting military operations because UNP policy had always been to support the objectives of the security forces.
UNP front-liner Lakshman Kiriella told Daily Mirror his party did not agree with government policy but it was not opposed to the military operations to eradicate terrorism.
He said certain government elements used the war as a cover to execute politicians and activists critical of the government.
“Certain government elements have been behind the killings of politicians and journalists. They carry out abductions and demand ransom, all under the guise of the war. This is what we have always been opposed to and not military victories by the security forces fighting the terrorists in the North and East,” Mr. Kiriella said.
He challenged the media and the government to reveal a single statement made by the UNP criticizing the security forces or their achievements in the North and East and said that such statements appeared only in the state media.
“It was the state media which exaggerated and twisted facts about the UNP being against the war. But then again what else can you expect from them,” Mr. Kiriella charged.
He said the UNP had always called for the implementation of the 17th Amendment but this too had been criticized by some government allies who stressed that the 17th amendment if implemented would negate the war effort.
“JHU MPs, especially Champika Ranawaka had claimed that the 17th Amendment will negate the military operations. This is absurd as the 17th Amendment has nothing to do with the war. He should get his facts straight,” Mr. Kiriella said.
UNP opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe last week congratulated the troops on defeating the LTTE and also praised the political leadership that paved the way for the victories.
“We also welcome the way the President, Prime Minister and the Cabinet supervised the military operations,” he told in a statement read out to journalists in Colombo last week.
UNP general secretary Tissa Attanayaka was also quoted in the media last week that Bodhi Poojas had been organized by the UNP to invoke blessings on the security forces for their final battle in the north.
However these comments came under strong criticism last week when Media Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa scoffed at the UNP’s commendation of military victories and the praising of the government on its war efforts saying the statement was a belated and a 180 degree turnaround.
“It is surprising and peculiar. Mr. Wickremesinghe has made the statement in a bid to contain the grassroot level UNPers within the party as most of them are deserting the party in droves,” Minister Yapa said last week.}}

Of cpourse they have a duty, but what do you want them to say? That they can guarantee the safety of people held under the guns of the LTTE? NO ONE can assure their safety at this point, except the LTTE itself, at their option.
What do you think the SLA is trying to do now? It is a ONE LARGE HOSTAGE RESCUE OPERATION designed to release all of the Wanni Tamils from the clutches of the LTTE.
How many large "Hostage Rescue Operations" have there been without casualties in the HISTORY of the world? Answer: NONE.
Remember the Israeli Entebbe Airport attack to release hostages? Some hostages died.
Remember the Russian attack against Terrorists who took over a School? A large number of hostages died.
Remember The US legislators who went to "peacefully" rescue Jim Jones's religious adherents? All of his followers and the US party died.
Remember Hitler in his bunker who wanted all Germans to die with him, because in his view they had not fought hard enough to win and did not deserve to live? At the end, he ordered everything essential to life to be destroyed, but his subordinates fooled him and didn't carry out the orders. (See Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William Shirer).
There are many more examples; but very few in which a large number of people, held as human shields by a defeated army, were rescued without casualties.
Some civilians will die in the Wanni rescue operation, but thousands of others will live to enjoy a better life in the years ahead, free of their tormentors.
If you have any great ideas about how to rescue thiese people WITHOUT CASUALTIES, please email those ideas to MOD/SLA at their websites, WITHOUT DELAY.
What DOES NOT HELP is the wringing of hands, and criticizing the brave people given that task while they are doing their very best, without offering any solutions.
The GOSL has emphasized that everything humanly possible to minimize civilian casualties is being done, and will be done.
No Army, No Government, in recent memory, has done so much, and tries so hard, to avoid civilian casualties when trying to defeat a truly diabolical enemy.

I was refering to racially charged hateful sentiments expressed towards not just LTTE supporters but Tamils at large who dont necessarily support the LTTE but differ in their view from those expressed by Douglas Devananda/Ananda Sangaree.
Well honeys as much as we'd like to wish away/kill off/scare off dissenting voices the truth is that we can't. So the best way to handle it is by excercising restraint/using our words carefully. Otherwise we'd be back in the same boat we were for the last 30 years in no time.

On DLK it states they found an “insulin container”??? I am not sure about it? There is however a “Centrifuge” along with a M-16 or what ever!
