We have received credible information on the arrest of two individuals, one a middle aged man traveling on a non-Sri Lankan passport at an undisclosed location in Bangkok in a joint stint launched by Thai and Sri Lankan authorities. The travel documents and said identity confirms with an alias of LTTE operative Shanmugam Kumaran Tharmalingham.
The man was carrying travel documents both under his own birth name and under other aliases at the time of arrest. A group of Sri Lankan officials is expected to fly the said two individuals to Sri Lanka shortly. Please await further information as it is made available.

The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) yesterday warned that a small group of LTTE terrorists remained active in the South though their fighting formations had been totally destroyed.
Major General Mano Perera, the Overall Operations Commander, in charge of the Western Province, said that that terrorist group that was being hunted included suicide cadres and their handlers.
Addressing the press at the SLA headquarters, he said that terrorists could be operating in the city and its suburbs. Emphasising that an LTTE threat remained, the officer said that a spate of recoveries made by the police, the SLA and other services following the collapse of the LTTE in May highlighted the danger.
He said that the SLA would throw a heavy security blanket in the city and its suburbs to thwart a possible terrorist attack aimed at disrupting its 60th year anniversary celebrations.
Since the SLA killed LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran on the banks of the Nanthikadal lagoon on May 19, there had not been a single LTTE attack though one soldier died in Batticaloa while making an attempt to apprehend a fleeing terrorist.
Army Chief-of-Staff Major General Mendaka Samarasinghe, Chairman of the Organising Committee, said that beginning with religious observance on October 2, the SLA would hold a series of events to celebrate the anniversary. On October 12, a ceremonial parade would be accorded to Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka, who spearheaded the Sri Lanka’s successful war against the LTTE. He is the senior most serving army officer.
Samarasinghe said that the two major events that would attract the people would be the five-day exhibition at the BMICH beginning October 3 and the Army Tattoo beginning October 17 for 7 days at the Khettarama International Stadium. They would the major public gatherings in the city after the historic triumph over LTTE terrorism after the bloodiest phase of the Eelam war. The SLA lost over 5,000 officers and men during three years of fighting.
The former Jaffna Security Forces Commander said that the exhibition at the BMICH would give the general public an unprecedented opportunity to see actual combat scenes captured on film, exclusive pictures as well as maps depicting what he called battle-field progress from Mavil-aru on the Eastern front to Nanthikadal on the Vanni East front. He said that the SLA would also put on display a range of armaments, including heavy artillery seized from the LTTE though it would not be possible to move each and every captured item to Colombo.
Perera urged visitors to BMICH and Khettarama not to bring even a bottle of water as both the army and the civilians could avoid unnecessary delays.
Samarasinghe said that entry tickets for the BMICH exhibition would be priced at Rs 50 for general public and Rs 25 for students in the event of organised visits by schools. But tickets for Army Tattoo would be priced at Rs. 2,000 (grand stand), Rs.1000, Rs. 500 and Rs.200. Responding to The Island queries he said though they expected approximately 100,000 visitors a day to BMICH and about 20,000 to Khettarama, the SLA did not expect to make a profit it would be utilised for the benefit of both the serving and the battle wounded.
Samarasinghe expressed belief that the October shows would encourage recruitment to the army. Although the war had come to an end, recruitment would continue, he said adding that the 200,000 strong SLA was now engaged in development projects, particularly road construction in the eastern Trincomalee district. He emphasised the importance of maintaining existing troop levels to meet any eventuality. The SLA, he said was comprised of 265 regular and volunteer battalions belonging to 23 Regiments deployed both in the North and East and outside the former battle-grounds.

Iran has until late September to respond to the latest international proposal aimed at stopping the Islamic Republic from developing a nuclear weapon. Under the proposal, Iran would suspend its uranium enrichment program in exchange for a U.N. Security Council commitment to forgo a fourth round of economic and diplomatic sanctions.
But if diplomacy fails, the world should be prepared for an Israeli attack on Iran's suspected nuclear weapons facilities. As Adm. Michael Mullen, the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, recently acknowledged: "The window between a strike on Iran and their getting nuclear weapons is a pretty narrow window."
If Israel attempts such a high-risk and destabilizing strike against Iran, President Obama will probably learn of the operation from CNN rather than the CIA. History shows that although Washington seeks influence over Israel's military operations, Israel would rather explain later than ask for approval in advance of launching preventive or preemptive attacks. Those hoping that the Obama administration will be able to pressure Israel to stand down from attacking Iran as diplomatic efforts drag on are mistaken.
The current infighting among Iran's leaders also has led some to incorrectly believe that Tehran's nuclear efforts will stall. As Friday's International Atomic Energy Agency report on Iran's nuclear programs revealed, throughout the political crises of the last three months, Iran's production rate for centrifuges has remained steady, as has its ability to produce uranium hexafluoride to feed into the centrifuges.

So let's consider four past Israeli military operations relevant to a possible strike against Iran.
In October 1956, Israel, Britain and France launched an ill-fated assault against Egypt to seize control of the Suez Canal. The day before, Secretary of State John Foster Dulles grilled Abba Eban, Israel's ambassador to the U.S., about Israel's military buildup on the border with Egypt, but Eban kept quiet about his country's plans.
In June 1967, Israel initiated the Six-Day War without notice to Washington, despite President Johnson's insistence that Israel maintain the status quo and consult with the U.S. before taking action. Only days before the war began, Johnson notified Prime Minister Levi Eshkol in a personal message: "Israel just must not take preemptive military action and thereby make itself responsible for the initiation of hostilities."
On June 7, 1981, Israeli fighter-bombers destroyed the Iraqi nuclear reactor at Osirak shortly before it was to be fueled to develop the capacity to make nuclear weapons-grade plutonium. Again, Washington was not informed in advance. President Reagan "condemned" the attack and "thought that there were other options that might have been considered."
A few days later, Prime Minister Menachem Begin told CBS News: "This attack will be a precedent for every future government in Israel. ... Every future Israeli prime minister will act, in similar circumstances, in the same way."
Begin's prediction proved true on Sept. 6, 2007, when Israeli aircraft destroyed what was believed to be a North Korean-supplied plutonium reactor in Al Kibar, Syria. Four months earlier, Israeli intelligence officials had provided damning evidence to the Bush administration about the reactor, and the Pentagon drew up plans to attack it. Ironically, according to New York Times reporter David Sanger, President Bush ultimately decided the U.S. could not bomb another country for allegedly possessing weapons of mass destruction. An administration official noted that Israel's attack went forward "without a green light from us. None was asked for, none was given."
These episodes demonstrate that if Israel decides that Iranian nuclear weapons are an existential threat, it will be deaf to entreaties from U.S. officials to refrain from using military force. Soon after the operation, Washington will express concern to Tel Aviv publicly and privately. The long-standing U.S.-Israeli relationship will remain as strong as ever with continued close diplomatic, economic, intelligence and military cooperation.
Should Tehran prove unwilling to meet the September deadline and bargain away its growing and latent nuclear weapon capability, we can expect an Israeli attack that does not require U.S. permission, or even a warning.

Disprove analysis on Channel 4 video clip, expert tells UN

The Australiabased world renowned expert in video cording Siri Hewawitharana has challenged the UN to disprove his analysis into the fake video clip of Channel 4, The Defence Ministry confirmed.
Mr. Hewawitharana made this comment following the remarks made by the Special Rapporteur on extra-judicial, summary or arbitrary executions Prof. Philip Alston, who claimed that the response of the Government on the issue was prompt but `not impartial’ as military officials are involved in the findings.
“I can tell the good Professor that if he is to put his experts against my conclusion I am happy to see any of them do any rebuttal of my analysis.
Since he is an academic he should know, the way Science and Engineering research works since we got qualifications from the same country. He said that Channel 4 got non linear editors from Broadcast companies and if they care to put this video on, these editors would have seen the forgery of the editing parts within a few seconds.
“So why are we wasting time here”, Hewawitharana said adding that Prof. Alston insults not only the Sri Lankan nation with lies and innuendoes, but is also questioning science and engineering.

After I've witnessed 30k+ innocent Tamils are massacred in less than 4 months in inhuman conditions where humid hit 40' C and one meal a day hardly anyone got and all were starving an dieing from shelling wounds without proper medical help, moreover the constant bombing of makeshift hospitals in NFZ that really told the barbaric nature of Sinhalese.

My sentiments as well. It is about time She should go up on this list. What does she really want to achieve? Does she want to be the president again? Didn't she run the country long enough? C4 Video
GOSL was wrong in pursuing this the way they did. Only shot themselves in the foot and keep repeatedly shooting itself in the foot.
When the video was first aired C4 stated 3 or 4 times they cannot verify the authenticity of this video or its source. Think we all knew following the broadcast the video was fiction to some extent but gruesome.
GOSL should have "taken a deep breath" and followed the C4 line stating an unauthenticated video has been aired to disrepute to the armed forces. End of story!
Instead, GOSL tag on to a comment written in the Island newspaper by one Siri Hewawitharana (never even heard of to the Australian Institutions and Research Labs) and seek his services to publish a full investigation report ,analysis done by SH and members of the Armed Forces (the very people accused of in this video).
Not a smart move by any accounts.
GOSL would have been far better to leave it for C4 to confirm or otherwise the autheniticity.
C4 and all the media institutions who broadcast the video would have been advised by their in-house counsel to state in each of their broadcast they are unable to verify the contents. (protecting their backsides so to speak)
Instead GOSL has made a hash of this one.

Sri Lanka has ‘ignored” a request to probe violations- UN
The UN Rapporteur on Extrajudicial Executions, Professor Philip Alston, has told Radio Australia's Connect Asia program the Sri Lankan government has so far ignored requests from the UN to investigate alleged human rights violations in the country.
"There's been no response. I have been requesting the government for a very long time now to undertake a visit because there have been quite a number of allegations of killings undertaken during the closing months of the civil war and the government is not interested again, it seems, in any sort of independent investigation of those allegations."
He also said the government has shown him only brief summaries of reports on investigations conducted into the controversial Channel 4 video.
"The bottom line is that you have very serious allegations and you've got a handful of experts who are extremely close to the government who provide no sense of an impartial investigation of the type required," he said.

Two suicide cadres nabbed, one commits suicide

One of the two female LTTE suicide bombers arrested at Uppululama in Vavuniya committed suicide by biting a cyanide capsule, says Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara.
Brigadier Nanayakkara said that two female suicide cadres were taken into custody on information received by Galle Police that they were in the Vavuniya area. A special police team had been dispatched to apprehend the two. While being taken into custody, one female had committed suicide, he said.
The Police team from Galle, with the assistance of the Vavuniya Division Crimes Investigations Unit and had surrounded a house where the suicide bombers were staying. This house belongs to a hard core LTTE pistol group member named ‘Neruppu’. The Tiger cadre arrested alive had given further information on some hidden explosives as well.
Following this lead, Police recovered three suicide kits, six kilograms of high explosives of the C-4 variety and 10 detonators concealed in a plastic barrel and buried near the Uppukulama church.

Asian Tribune has obtained the Federal Election Commission data, which is not classified information, to figure out the political contribution of Dr. Elias Jeyarajah to the Democratic Party campaign. The data does not indicate that he has made any contribution at all to the Republican Party.
2007 Fourth Quarter Jeyarajah contributed $ 500 to the North Carolina Democratic Party.
Second Quarter 2008 he contributed $ 1,500 to Hillary Clinton campaign.
Third Quarter 2008 Jeyarajah contributed $ 1,565 to the Obama campaign.
The Federal Election Commission report states that “$10,965 was given by people who identified their last name as ‘Jeyarajah’ – ZERO dollars to the Republican Party and $10,965 from 3 people to the Democratic Party”.
It is no secret here in the United States that political contribution, when it is a significant amount, comes with political favors. This reciprocity is always a significant feature in American politics.
And, Dr. Elias Joseph Jeyarajah seems to be getting dividends from officials who are close to the Obama administration especially from the Clinton State Department.

There are three issues arise out of this investigative report:
(1) A massive amount of funds have been spent by a US-based organization which is clearly defending the LTTE agenda of self-determination which means to the pro-LTTE lobby is separation. With the presentation of facts in this investigative report if the Sri Lankan authorities do not pay serious attention as to how these funds emerged and where they came from then they are living in a fantasy world allowing the resuscitation of the global LTTE to take an easy path with the connivance of several officials of the State Department and elsewhere which is aimed at building a power center to challenge the legitimate government in Sri Lanka.
(2) The significant political contribution to the Obama campaign, and most significantly to Hillary Clinton who is now the Secretary of State whose office Rudrakumaran-Jeyarajah duo have approached to undermine Sri Lanka and bring the US-Lanka relations to a more complicated level seems to have brought dividends arising out of the behavior of the senior officials of the State Department, Office of the U.S. Permanent Representative to the U.N. and some Obama administration officials. Whether the refusal by the British High Commission in Colombo to issue the entry visa to former foreign secretary and now Sri Lanka’s envoy to the U.N. Dr. Palitha Kohona is connected to all these is another study itself.
(3) To combat this adverse atmosphere in the global arena Sri Lanka needs to seriously think of developing a public diplomacy strategy and strategic communication policy identifying the areas it is far behind to that of global LTTE campaign and take serious effort to assemble a group of professionals in Western nations to build a ‘Think Tank’ that can effectively outsmart the Tigers with its monitoring, research and analyses. And, connected to this Sri Lanka needs to establish a cabinet office that will handle ‘External Affairs’ to give guidance and leadership to this effort. Most importantly Sri Lanka needs to identify a political activists/strategist who could work with such a ‘Think Tank’, which needs many resources, to defeat the emergence of a ‘parallel power center’ envisaged by global activists of the LTTE.
There is a consensus among Sri Lankan expatriates living in Western nations, which Asian Tribune is very conscious of, that the best political strategist who has proved his mettle for a good number of years to coordinate this ‘External Affaires’ is senior presidential advisor and parliamentarian Basil Rajapaksa which has currently undertaken the task of nation building well connected to the issues that this investigative report has presented.
Leak reveals India Maoist threat

The Indian government has obtained a leaked report that reveals the strategy of the country's Maoist insurgents.
The report is formulated by the group's top policy-making body, the politburo.
It calls for attacks on Indian security forces and efforts to stop multi-national corporations from taking over mines in central and eastern India.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says the insurgency is the single biggest threat to India's security. Maoist violence affects a third of all districts.
Last week, Mr Singh said India was losing the battle against the rebels.
The Maoists say they are fighting for the rights of the poor. They operate in a large swathe of territory across central and eastern India.
More than 6,000 people have been killed during their 20-year fight for a communist state.
'Bitter' fight
Calling upon Maoist cadres to mobilise and carry out "tactical" operations against India's security forces, the 20-page document says that Mr Singh's government is preparing to destroy their resistance.
Accusing the government of linking up with the "imperialist" United States, the Maoist report asks cadres to meticulously plan attacks against symbols of government and to "seize" political power.
Warning its cadres against becoming complacent, the politburo says that India is getting assistance from America and that it should learn from the failure of the Tamil Tigers (LTTE) in Sri Lanka.
It says the LTTE's failure to understand the changing tactics of the security forces eventually led to their defeat.
Maoists argue that big industrial houses, like India's Tata Group, are helped by the government in their attempts to wrest control of mines in eastern India.
The insurgents are calling upon the tribal population to participate in an armed struggle.
Maoist fighters are urged to tell local people that the Singh government wants to subdue them, destroy their culture and loot resources.
"This time the fight will be more long drawn and more bitter than the one against the British imperialist armies," the document says.

Speaking at recent meetings on internal security India's Home Minister P Chidambaram said Maoists had improved their military and operational tactics.
Besides targeting the police, alleged police informers and so-called class enemies, the rebels are "laying greater emphasis on attacking economic and development infrastructure such as roads, bridges, railways, power and telecommunication networks," he said.
He also warned that the Maoists were making and deploying increasingly sophisticated bombs.
A senior official told the BBC that Mr Chidambaram has been trying to impress upon state governments that they should not take the threat posed by Maoists lightly.
He wants state governments to simplify procedures and increase the recruitment of security forces and use federal funds to buy weapons.
But, as a recent review by the home ministry showed, most states have been slow in understanding the seriousness of the situation.

The Sri Lankan president is very popular. There are a number of reasons. The key reason is that he had the backbone to give leadership to the mighty SLDF to finish the world’s most dangerous terror outfit. We must not forget that he did this amidst international pressure and criticism. He did not give into any of these parties who pressured him to save the LTTE. The result is a country free of LTTE terrorist movement. We don’t hear anymore bomb threats in Colombo and no more military deaths in Vanni too. Now are we to assume that all is well and president can rule as long as the Sri Lankan people would like him to go? No.
Salvador Allende came to power in Chili, one of the Latin American countries, in 1970, elected by popular vote (democracy!). However, he was never a pro US leader who tried to adopt a leftist mode of economic development. He was overthrown by a military coup in 1973 and the power vacuum was filled by the dictator Pinoche, who ruled the country with the support of US of decades. He violated human rights of number of people who called for re installment of democracy but the usual NGOs and the US backed international community did not even mention any such violations.
Another such leader who ought to defend his nation was Slobodan Milosevic. He fought to prevent the disintegration of Yugoslavia and when failed tried his best to protect Serbia from outside forces. He was overthrown after winning the popular vote, and the traitor Gingic (who was later killed by a patriot) betrayed him to outside forces, sending him to Hague. Milosevic stood bravely in front of all outsiders. Interestingly, he “died” while in UN custody of “natural causes” just before he was proven innocent.
There are a number of other leaders who were overthrown or killed due to the reason that they stood out for their nations and fought koolie forces of the outsiders who want to regain the resources of these countries. Sukarno in Indonesia, Patrick Lumumba in Congo also fall into this category of legendary leaders who were overthrown by outside forces irrespective of their internal popularity. However, this strategy was not always successful.
They tried their best to overthrow Hugo Chavez, who was well known for his Socialist ideas. They tried to kill Fidel Castro more than times and failed miserably. Most recently, they overthrew the elected president in Honduras Manuel Zelaya and installed a puppet Michaletti. However, Michaletti is so ignorant and arrogant, he insulted the skin color of Obama and stated that it was a mistake. US’s stance changed after Michaletti’s statement but as we all know Obama is under pressure from the same forces who overthrew Zelaya. Seizing the opportunity, Zelaya is fighting back wit the support of his friends in Latin America.
The other noticeable attempt was in Iran, even though the same model was tried out in Belarus on a smaller scale. Once Ahmadinejad won the elections for the second time in Iran, these outside forces used Facebook and Twitter websites and a bunch of loonies who supported the super rich candidate who lost, to overthrow the entire system constructed after the Iranian Revolution. Again, right action taken by the leaders prevented this from happening.

The main reason for the festering Maoist insurgency in India is the basic inequity of land ownership in India. Land is owned by high caste land owners. In Sri Lanka the Paddy lands Act passed during the SWRD era gave protection and security to tenant farmers. We also don't have situation today where one person owns 4000 acres, which is untenable in a small country like Sri Lanka.

SL narrowly missed being a socialist nation via democracy in 1947, as DSS had brains to reserve few indep seats for his support in some abnormal manner, I've heard. However they were the dominant segment in opposition until 1956. They challenged the govt pretty well. And then they broke into two and part entered the govt. In 1965 they all entered the govt and until that opportunity waster JRJ won a socialist free parliament in 1977, they dominated our politics.
Their impact is all over. Pulic perception, youth, uni students, politicians, policy makers, govt servants they all have been shaped by them. They are te strongest idelogical drive in SL politics and oldest independant political movement [when others were licking white boot]
Their spin off of JVP caused two bloddsheds and 1971 is said to be a moral supporter [at minimum] for LTTE's creation.
Now they're dead. So all the pragmatic individuals have joined a reasonable party and remain in power. Still they try their tricks here and their further destablising the nation. VISA Rejections
Rejection of visa is a common issue for any country. However, if your visa get rejected now SL public think its becuz GSL anti-west attitude. Dream is some thing keeps you living. Most (urban) sinhalese (even those who supported war has this dream of mingrating to Auz, USA, UK or west. (Assumption is once you migrate to west all your problems are solved.) Even those who already stay in west may like to stay longer, (they know living in west will not solve all the problems but you can do financially better than in SL.) So such visa rejection may work nicely, in taming GSL, if used wisely by west.

Whatever the system you adapt should have a sustainability component.
In order to survive you have to compete.
Socialist policies are not built on that very truth.
Socialist can be democratic i.e. follow a democratic process to elect leaders, but still follow making everyone happy policies through sharing/subsidy etc.
However, Open Market system looks evil, it provides a more sustainable approach and a model to compete.
Now having said that this whole open market system should be controlled through many checks and balances. Else, it would go on its own directions and create destructions (core reason: selfishness of individuals).
Middle Path seem to be the best path. When you add more checks and balances, the Open Economy system becomes more and more socialist. That means it is reaching the middle path.
China is coming from Socialist camp towards Open Economy camp. I hope that they would stop in the middle.
Also I would expect them to select their leaders through a clever semi-democratic means i.e. make people vote on getting only qualified people into the governing council -not because he or she being a long-term member of the Communist Party or the person runs an illicit liquor business.

In SL this intelligence was not used in system creation. Some guys loved socialism heartily and did all the rituals they can do by killing private sector and punishing the wealth. Other clan hated this and thought that total opposite is right, and added their relatives to the best beneficiary list. Industry supported the side that fits their goals. Importers also did the same. Apart from this model which I call "badagostharavadaya" [try better english term] we never had true socialism or true capitalism. Middle path is also a fake term used for badagostharavaadaya.
In the back of this badagostharavaadaya we have loads of ideologists some worshiping das capital others nationalism. Situated in the middle of world literally, there still exist ppl who want SL to isolate from world and/or become self-sufficient. These ideologists can never replace badagostharavadiyas as latter only stand on any ground. Ideologists are in their fantasy worlds. So UNP->SLFP->UNP... is our ONLY choice.
What we need are ppl who can take the good of all systems and apply appropriately. But system is blocking every such chance for them to reach the control room.
This is why I am not as hopeful as for war, when it comes to economic development. It is not a simple manure that MR can do with few of the likes of GR/SF. Nor is MR fully fit to understand the need of the hour. However much we respect him, he's also descending from the badagostharavadee genre

US envoy in India discusses Lankan issue with Karunanidhi
The US envoy in India Ambassador Tim Roemer has discussed the situation concerning the internally displaced people in Sri Lanka, during a meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today.
Describing as a "high priority" the resettlement of Tamil people lodged in camps in Sri Lanka, Ambassador Roemer said the US was trying to make sure that the process happened in an "expeditious, humane and just fashion".
"The US makes it a high priority to make sure that these people are moved out of the camps. We have invested close to USD 80 million in 2008 and 2009 to make sure that the process happens in a quick, expeditious humane and just fashion," US Ambassador Tim Roemer told reporters.
Roemer said the US was also working on de-mining operations in Sri Lanka to make it safer there. It was also involved in rebuilding of schools in the country.
"It is also the priority for the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister (Karunanidhi), he said. (Chennai Online)

Sep. 21, NJ-USA : The Buddha Statue Development Committee of the New Jersey Buddhist Vihara in Franklin, New Jersey announces with humility and great joy the unveiling of a statue of the Buddha in seated Samadhi (meditation) posture on the serene temple grounds located at 4299 Route 27, Franklin, New Jersey. The land is also being developed as a future meditation retreat.
The statue measures 30 feet in height making it the largest in the Western Hemisphere. The Buddha Samadhi Statute symbolizes the serenity, peace, tolerance, and compassion, which are integral to the Buddhist doctrine. The statue was sculpted by a Buddhist monk from Sri Lanka, with the financial assistance from Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike from around the United States and Sri Lanka. There were many volunteers who also donated their time and physical energy to help with the construction of the statue.
The statue will be unveiled at 3 p.m. on September 26, 2009. Several honored guests, including N.J. Governor Jon Corzine will be in attendance.

In my view, the biggest misfits in today’s SL politics are Ranil Wickremasinghe and Mervyn Silva whereas the other two in the above list are not too far behind.
Mervyn has embarrassed the MR GOSL on numerous occasions and still holds the potential to do so and bring utter disrepute to the GOSL.
On the other hand, Ranil Wickremasinghe has taken steps to dismember the nation by agreeing to give LTTE terrorists a separate state (of course, it was called a fancy name and not that as we know) and still continues to hold that potential (i.e. if ever he becomes the President).
As such, in this respect Ranil in my view is the greater “misfit” and the more dangerous one out of the two.

While we agree on almost all the facts on the victorious war, let me disagree with you on the role of socialists on separatism. I would like to write the following to explain my argument further. While we all agree to be patriotic, there might be points that we disagree and argue on. However, let that under no circumstances be a hindering factor for our unity to fight head on with existing LTTE scums to protect out motherland.
Socialism and separatism
Socialism is essentially an economic system which suggests that the greater resources of a country should be equally divided amongst the public of the country. However, in early 20th century, the socialists were divided to two major schools of thought. The major spit in socialism occurred after the Russian revolution and the death of Lenin. Trotsky and his clan argued that the concept of country is not important. According to them, the class comes first and class remains the key driving force of change within the world. However, school of 3rd international, under the leadership of Stalin thought differently.
Stalin pointed out that the role of the nations within the world would remain important and he pointed out that within Russia, only Russian nation is developed enough to take the socialist development forward (Russians are the vanguards of taking development of Soviet Union forward). With the Second World War in the horizon, Stalin used patriotism ahead of class theory and forged alliances with the west to defeat the immediate threat. Stalin realized that the concept of class itself is not strong enough to protect a country, let alone its economic system. That’s why the concept of “democratic centralism” came into action in Stalinist Soviet Union. The central government was made strong and unification of all regions under a strong leadership was carried out. The direction of the country was dictated by the centre and the regions had the power to carry out the plans formulated at the centre. Thus, Soviet Union even after facing the devastating WWII (they call it great patriotic war), emerged as a superpower, from the status of being a very backward agrarian and poverty stricken economy. However, the later leadership just destroyed all it was built upon and SU collapsed.
However, there is one country who strictly still adhere to this concept of democratic centralism and fast replicating the formula of patriotism+socialism+international collaboration to its development. It is as we all know, is China. Mao not only adopted the Stalin’s concept of patriotism, but made it one of the key stances of his party. He has written that a socialist must be a patriot and stand to defeat any imperialist force who would sneak in and destroy our country to grab our resources. Today, China thrives on this model and has replicated the success which Soviet Union achieved in 40s and 50s under the same model of development. China essentially remains a socialist state (80% of all large Chinese companies are controlled by the communist party by 2005 vs only 50% in 1989) while remaining anti-separatist. Further, countries such as Cuba and Vietnam also stood by us in UN councils supporting us to fight against separatist terrorism. Thus, the real socialists remain a unifying force rather than a force for separatism.
