Army Commander Lt. General Sarath Fonseka has rewarded his best General by making him the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army's largest Offensive Division, the 57 Division.
Major General Jagath "Chula" Dias of Gajaba Regiment is now the Commander of 10,000 troops in a single Army Division following the Commander's decision to raise the 574 Brigade. The 574 comprises of 2,500 fresh troops under the able leadership of Lt. Colonel Senaka Wijesooriya, another battle hardened officer.
The 57 Division has borne the brunt of the operations so far having marched through areas considered impossible to capture, including Madhu, Tunukkai, Mallavi, Uylankulam, Akkarayan and soon, Kilinochchi and Mankulam.
The 57 has killed the largest number of LTTE cadres in operations so far and gone head on into battle with the LTTE's so-called elites from Charles Anthony to Ratha Regiments. It had only one setback at Akkarayankulam where it lost 55 men in fierce fighting but had the Charles Anthony and Ratha Regiments running with its tail between its legs on all other occasions.
In July this year, the 57 Division, teaming up with Special Forces units killed close to 100 Charles Anthony unit cadres at Vavunikulam. 'Lt. Col' Pallavan, the overall Commander of the Charles Anthony unit and Anbu, the local area leader were among those killed in the attack. A rescue mission led by Bhanu, Lawrence and Lakshman were severely beaten back.
The capture or Kilinochchi will be a fitting tribute to Chula Dias, having served in the Kilinochchi SLA Garrison and Kokavil Detachment as a young officer in the 1980s and the 90s.
The 574 is the first indicator of the Army's decision to increase troop strength in existing Offensive Divisions instead of raising new Divisions. It is only fitting that the first recipient of this expansion was General Chula Dias. The induction of the 574 and its fresh troops will be a relief to troops fighting day and night, sunshine or rain in the frontlines.
Meanwhile in the Weli Oya sector, the 59 is now facing a Tiger trenchine which we reported was under construction several weeks ago. The trenchline goes from the northern shore of the Tannimurippu Tank to Nayaru Lagoon.
In a way, this commitment of troops by the LTTE is a blessing as the areas lying ahead of the trench is mostly open terrain. It will provide the SLA an opportunity to kill as many LTTE cadres as they possibly could before stepping into the open terrain ahead. Perhaps this justifies the Commander's decision to slow down the pace of the operations in Weli Oya.
In other news, the SLAF claimed it bombed three vital locations in Kilinochchi yesterday including an LTTE administrative base. SLAF sources have confirmed direct hits on all three targets but the exact damage caused to the Tigers is unclear.

Thank you again DW.
Theruwan saranai for all our brave hearts.
What happened to the LTTE earlier build up near Killi?
Hi hi
RED BIRDS are in action. Next time they will hit ? where, can you guess ??. Definitely …… VP’s ASS. Hi hi
true sri lankan,
Very good article. Thank you for posting the link. In fact we were just talking the other editors and I, about writing something on those lines.
DW,
the quantity of the Comments has increased.. But cheak the Quality....
Keep up the Goodwork...
:)
perein,
We expect the counter attack will definitely come. When is the question. But the LTTE must counterattack with at least 1000 cadres against a 10,000 man 57 Division. 100-500 cadre attacks just won't do. It will have to take on Divisions other than the 57, including TF-1 and 2 if any significant reversal is to be achieved. This means losing majority or all its reserves in one single go. This is a very risky proposition for them. Perhaps this is why the counterattack has not come yet.
su,
Yes that is quite unfortunate. But the blasteelamers package could come in handy.
DW-
Thank you for the 1000 vs 10,000 comment.
Is there a possibility they keep us hold on this location while VP+ higher trying to escape from other side?

Hi hi
Both of them are mad. Pot is boiling. Poor guys (I mean Pigs) hi hi.
Sea route is the only is escape route for the VP and the band. escape through air is can be ruled out because we already got our hands with MIG 29s now. (Detection Range is longer than previous occasion)
DEFENCE WIRE
DO NOT LET PEE-LAM PEE-DOM PI-TER USE RELIGIOUS FIGURES.
This move to increase the 57th's strength is a good one. I would however send units from another division with a mix of new recruits, so the 57th is not diluted too much. It is much harder to engage the enemy with green recruits than without them at times.
Moreover, it is important to correct the impression that 10:1 will be the ratio on contact. As DefenceWire will agree, at the actual points of contact, the ratio will be closer to 1:2 or a little bit better for the SLA.
This is because the LTTE will concentrate its attacks on one of the brigades, or parts of a brigade. They have the initiative to choose their target and they know that winning against a dug in defence means superior tactics, and force multipliers such as mobile mortar units.
That said, 574 is crucial for the 57th, as now there is the potential to increase the strength of the LTTE’s targeted unit (571-3) by 50%.
This move by Gen. Fonseka will make the LTTE's counter strike that much less effective.
I have noted that the tactics--especially the use of small, hunter-killer units from Vakarai onwards--is crucial in keeping civilians out of the line of fire and focusing on the enemy. You have many admirers of this phase of how the war is being conducted.
So, I wish the 57th best of luck, as the LTTE is now at its dangerous best with no where to run and fewer places to hide. As I mentioned before, for me preserving the lives of these gallant men is as important as fighting the LTTE.
Finally, I hope when the flood of civilians come, the SLA uses technology to discern who has fired weapons, as that is evidence enough to detain them without violating human rights. Those with such evidence needs to be carefully looked over and documented, as they are also candidates for counter espionage, particularly if treated well.
P.O.
Ho..ho VP's got a second bitch, mind sitting on his ding dong and let the soreness go away...
By the way, they use 1,000 against 10,000 it will still be 10:1, with tech behind, and with them running low on supplies, I think they dont have a major chance other than try to delay the inevitable. with the 57th I think also TF2 is runnng strong by taking on the major offensive in Mannar and taking on the major sea tiger bases, my concern are the TF2 and 59th, but I hear they have been asked to move in slower, guys the real fact is that the best units stand behind the Muhamalai lines, enough fire power to polverise them, I also have a feeling the Mig 29s will be used at the EP battle, do dismantle the Anti Aircraft defence system, bringing 1st step for distruction of the LTTE in EP.
defencewire,
can u pls publish an analysis of the current SLAF's advanced capabilities, for instance the acquisition of Night-vision devices, advanced UAV's,Fuel Air Bombs(FAB),reported by NIGHTFOXY,etc,,
Someone seems to be obsessed with Raatha Vaankaapu Padaiaani; even going to the extent of implicating the unit in deep-penetration and infantry activities.
These LTTE "open spaces" are a bad idea because i am sure their artillary is well placed to kill as many of our brave heroes as possible.
True Sri Lankan,
60 LTTE cadres were not killed. It was just 60 civilian cross dressers.
What does a 31 year old, unmarried, male do on a Thursday night?
Go to sleep Buddhike.
I think he means Budhdhika...ah...I dont see a Budhdhika in this blog...I think he is fantasisng to do sumthing..oh mine "anotherones changed his sex"
I think giving more power to 57 is a good idea, but it is even better if Army can looks into increase the number of DPUs unit that they have deployed in the north and east more and more and more... DPU needed to be equiped with more sophisticated and deadlier weapons with the added support of technology....
To me DPU is the way ahead.. they will have work to do for next ten years as well (even though this war will soon be over)..
Well the key to DPU units is that they move in smaller units, with smaller weapons and being incognito.
its like get in fast, come out fast and not get noticed till the hit..
The Sri Lankan LRRP units for a long period of time have been extremely successful at this art that the wiki article says the leadership was in hiding till the cease fire, looks like the tigers will have to run back into there rat holes once again..
Probably the most inspirational army leader I've personally known is Major General Fonseka, "A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the quality of his actions and the integrity of his intent."
I proud of where I am living “Sri Lanka” and the time I am living, I loudly say to tigers if you all brave enough take this determined bunch of Brave men’s. If you all want to be in history of Sri Lanka face them, otherwise they are going find you as covered VB men’s.
“Success doesn't come to you... you go to it. THAT’S what ARMY SAYS,”
"The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather in a lack of will."
I am not lucky enough that I am not one of the motivated SF’S. God bless all brothers, our prayers always with you all. I would thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

The Vadamarachci operation was closing in on Prabhakaran when the arrogant Indians launched the rescue operation.
-1987 June 4th
But within next couple of days JR intelligently throw the ball back to India, so at the end India learnt the lession of the century..
Are they ready to repeat what they did today ??? If yes that will be the begining of the end of India.
Trust me..
The indian government will not put there hands into this battle, they will purely be observers, they do want to see the endof the LTTE, but do not want to get involved because of Tamil Nadhu, but will push the state of Tamil Nadhu to crack down on the LTTE members inside, blaming it on insighting violence, we need the arms to stop flowing from Tamil Nadhu and the indian army is the only one who will do so, this is the smart game and they should keep doing this till the end of the war, that will be enough, stopping funds and weapons from that bay means the LTTE's supply chain is already shrinking, time is already showing us the result of this, if we keep doing this, there gona realise that there guns in the battle field are out of bullets, then the closure is ensured.
interesting news,...574 brigade into action. maybe this is part of SF's contingency plan, should the tigers concentrate on wiping out 57D.
another thought that occur'd to me was that,if we ourselves know the frailty of their counter-attack strategy, how must it effect any rational minded tiger?....
we are basically at a point in this war where our next step is banked on the ferocity of the tigers counter-attack.....
interesting days to come.

Proposed 42-day pre-charge detention in the United Kingdom: PACE expresses "serious doubts"
Fri, 2008-10-03 02:10
Strasbourg, 03 October,
The Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) today expressed concern about elements of draft counter-terrorism legislation in the United Kingdom that would enable the detention of a terrorist suspect for up to 42 days without charge, with limited judicial review.
The parliamentarians expressed "serious doubts" whether all the provisions of the draft legislation are in conformity with the European Convention on Human Rights. "A lack of appropriate procedural safeguards may lead to arbitrariness", the unanimously adopted text underlines.
Also, parliamentary involvement in the extension of pre-charge detention, as proposed, "is not appropriate". Hence, from the perspective of the separation of powers, "the decision to maintain a person in custody is a judicial function with respect to which a legislative, political body should, as a matter of principle, have no say."
The Assembly resolved to undertake a thorough study on this subject. According to the parliamentarians, the British draft legislation should be examined within the framework of a more general comparative study in order "to assess, in particular, the compatibility of such legislation with the European Convention on Human Rights".
Pretty soon the whole world will realize that when fighting manic terrorists, one need to have strict regulations such as detention of suspects....and the world will aslo see that those who support terror will keep barking at these so-called 'violations!'

"The 574 Brigade commenced functioning on Wednesday in the 57 Division front with 7 and 10 Sri Lanka Light Infantry battalions"
"In addition to the formation of this new Brigade the Army headquarters too is preparing the groundwork for the formation of another offensive Division to be added to the battlefront soon to enhance the military pressure on the LTTE."
Defence Column-Daily News
guys,
if we are to get another offensive div, where do you think it will be deployed?
Defence Column, Daily News: Wanni liberation enters most crucial stage
Also Progress Maps
"if we are to get another offensive div, where do you think it will be deployed?"
Between 56 and 59 divisions in Vavunia (I guess).
"It will provide the SLA an opportunity to kill as many LTTE cadres as they possibly could before stepping into the open terrain ahead."
just love it! maximum harvest.
Relevancy of DPU is diminishing fast I think. The area they can operate is shrinking fast. Before long (after Pooneryn and E'pass) there would be just a large single offensive. The front line would span along M'thivu, Puliyankulam, K'nochchi and E'pass line and would be shrinking rapidly.
From North: 53 & 55 divisions
West : 57,58 & 62 divisions
South: 59,63 divisions
Total of seven divisions. I guess Mulathivu is too small for that.
DefenceWire,
Many thanks for your informative posts. However the Charles Anthony to Ratha Regiments are "invincible" as they have the ability to sprout wings and fly at the first sign of any Danger mainly due to Genetic Engineering by VP.I am also awaiting the engagement of the LTTE "pink buffalo" and "Green walrus" offensive Divisions..
hemantha : "Relevancy of DPU is diminishing fast I think. The area they can operate is shrinking fast."
Till we get rain from the sky, Sri Lanka will have forest, till we have forest, carders can hide, till they have weapons (used by LTTE), there will be fights, so at least for next 10 years DPU will have jobs.. In north as well as in the east..
Once again.. DPU is the way to go.. that is if you are to sustain these wins
Vesapillei's monolithic style gave him the power and will to rise. However being a uneducated thug, he couldn't decide when to stop. if he has decide to change during half way throug the CFA story would have been different.
VP cannot pride himself with his military might anymore. He has been beaten fairly and squarely and his golden days of military “might” are long gone and his inabilities being humiliatingly exposed. He has begun to lose the invincible image that he used to command among his loyal Diaspora and the pro-LTTE factions around the world.
His arrogancy and personal ego pave the way for his denise.
However, he is still a terrorist and he is not dead yet, and the only good terrorist is the dead terrorist.
SLA aimed to recriut
14000 between October and December
SLN send 6000 in wast coast ground duties
SLAF send unknown number of personals to take ground security from SLA in unknown locations
(I don't know the length of the SLA tarining period. But this implies SLA is in short of manpoer in defending libereted areas.)
SLAF bombed LTTE HQ
Every one knew where it is. LTTE used these only when Solhaim vist there, for media purposes. I don't think they had any thing else doing there. But as you can see TN pics the buildings are almost undamaged.
Not all food lorries are checked. As I know UN lorries are not checked, in general. We can safely assume all the civilians still reamining in K'chi are very hard core civilians or LTTE civilian section. And those who left deep inside to LTTE areas also should be hardcore civilians. GSL ahve to send food, medicine and war items too in this food convays to LTTE, thier fighters and hard core civilians just to avoid international issues.
History,
In the immediate future it will be harder to use DPUs since as the LTTE controlled area is shrinking LTTE cadre+pro LTTE civilian density would increase in Mulathivu. So, deep penetration units would be easily exposed.
I agree with everything you said about the period after the war. Definitely, there would be seek and destroy missions. But I wonder those units would be called "DPU".
VP will command his merderous clan and send his troops to annihilation until Kili, Paranthan and EP are in his hand. When EP is cleared 53 and 55 will come down and his troops in Poonaryn area will have to fight and die or surrender to the army.
When it happened VP will try to escape. He will not let his leaders to join him. He will not commit suicide also. Most probably he will try to leave in a boat with his body guards.
SL Navy must guard eastern sea board with vigilance to prevent that. We must have him and Pottu otherwisw it will be a hollow victory without climax.
To defend whole N and E I guess we SLA need atleast 200,000 for those areas alone. Thus total SLA strenth need to be atleast 300,000. This is 150,000 incrase or doubling the current strenth and will need at least another 10 years.
If we are to play with current SLA strength we need superb intel, high civilian support and high tech. If SLA don't have enough man power I guess the best thing is to slow down advancing and keep killing LTTE cadres dailly as usual while minimising own casualties.
Hemantha
In future DPU will get more jobs in Yala, Kanchkudiaru, Thoppigala, Mulathiv eyc. As LTTE start fighting in jungles (thay already started in east) these DPU units can be used to seek and destroy those LTTE cadres. Yes, the name may be not suitable but we can change the name.
And before that, in wanni, actually from one hand it is easy to DPU topenetrate as area is shrinked. They don't need to walk now 60km from Vaunia to reach K'chi. So less effort, less time they need to be undetected from LTTE. On the other had it is easy for LTTE to find them as they have to search now small area. So I think now DP will do quick missions. They don't need spend number of days within enimy territory. Within few hours go, hit and come back. So I think still DPU is in a good position attacking LTTE targets. And right now, still LTTE has large area under them in east of A9.
Anybody want a snak.. have a look
I made Presidents.but can do nothing if they fail: Chandrika
by the way.. "hemantha", yes we both speak the same language..
History
We are intersted in hundreds years back history not few months back history.
It's great to hear that Chula Dias was promoted and strengthened with more troops. As far as I know this is the first time something like this has happened.
Moreover finally SLA has realized the importance of promoting the right people at the right time rather than doing it posthumously.
I like to remember heroes such as Captain Saliya Upul Aladeniya, who fought to death protecting Kokavil camp, but was not recognized until 4 years later.

Thanks DW for the update.
Ninja,
It is just a snak before your dinner .. obviously depending on the part where you live in the world
"I made Presidents.but can do nothing if they fail: Chandrika"
chandrika may have made them, but others fathered them. they will follow their fathers, gracefully rule and gracefully retire.
"SLA aimed to recriut
14000 between October and December"
part of them are to replace the existing cadre of course.
subject to that new recruits are going to cost over US$40 million a year!! we need ppl if we need them, but i hope someone should have done the calcs THOROUGHLY.
balancing salaries and capital purchases/maintenence of VERY expensive equipments must be managed carefully. otherwise the expenditure escalates and capital purchases/maintenence can suffer with DISASTROUS consequences.
We are talking about brigade a lot these days.. also we talk about army battalions (word dates to the 16th century), but have you ever thought the origin or that word.. have you heard of bala-eniya (Sinhala word dates even before 5th century BC), did you ever thought about the similarities between these two words,, battalion and bala-eniya.. bala-eniya is a pure Sinhala word. Bala-eniya can be nicely broken in to its sub words (A original word can be broken down into the main words of the language, those main word are called wadan wela, in Sinhala na, ma, ga are some of such main words – believe me they are not character, they are words and they have their meanings too).. So given that there is a very high probability to bala-eniya to be the origin of battalion..
So I am saying all these just to highlight one more time that the WAR yes the war is not new to us, it is in our blood and soul, we are talking about 57 brigades having 10, 000 soldier to support it. Hey buddy, wake up!! I am talking about a war, which its backup unit alone consist of 65, 000 soldiers. That is 2, 500 years ago… so where are we today??
DW,
I really appreciate your UNBIASED publication of the article.
HI guys....just so that I can understand properly....
1)what is the make up of a "Division"...I mean, if we take the 57..are all 10,000 men fighting formations or are they broken again in to offensive, clearing, defensive, Support, Medi-vac, reserves etc etc........
2)Does a division only consist of infantry, what about field support guns, armour, Crack troops etc? Do tehy function under the command of a seperate CO ,or does the Division Commander has control over all the resources?
If some one who actualy "knows" these things enlighten us all? (I can always refer wikipedia, but I need some relevant contextual knowledge, not a generic wackypedia article)..
Thanks in advance....
moshe dyan,
I saw CBK's words somewhere that she made presidents. The first thought came to my mind was if Chandrika made others predidents then who made Chandrika the president. This a clear indication that CBK still thinks that she owned our country. This is a concept her brother her brother always brought forward. Anyway, I am glad that we are done with them and we have a whole new journey ahead of us after reducing LTTE to dust.
Congratulations to Chula Dias, well done commander.
But the interesting thing for me in this piece by DW was
"In a way, this commitment of troops by the LTTE is a blessing as the areas lying ahead of the trench is mostly open terrain. It will provide the SLA an opportunity to kill as many LTTE cadres as they possibly could before stepping into the open terrain ahead. Perhaps this justifies the Commander's decision to slow down the pace of the operations in Weli Oya."
I always wondered this. LTTE was never good at defense, except in the narrow stretch of land beyond Muhamali/NagarKovil. So did the brilliant commander pro actively let the LTTE build those trench lines, which pretty much relegated the highly mobile LTTE units to a defensive role? Is it the reason why SLAF didn't really go after the earth moving machinery of the LTTE? Finally, did the Norwegian INGO that gave those machinery to the LTTE do it under the covert instruction of the army? My last query is probably not true, but who knows.
DW,
"Very good article. Thank you for posting the link. In fact we were just talking the other editors and I, about writing something on those lines."
It is poorly written, I think you should go ahead with your plan.
sam,
fully agree.
she was trying to MANAGE the WAR for PEACE which she beleieved would be a FEDERAL-like "solution" based on RACE. in that plan LTTE would DEFINETELY survive and be PEACEFUL. how naive and inexperienced?
she found a FANTASTIC friend in ranil in 2002.
but i'm SURE the bitch will do SOMETHING to create trouble. that is why i blame MR for NOT grooming a successor. basil (??) ALONE is not enough. there should be many captains in the making.
For me, the human rights activists, and the terrorists/fundamentalists are the two extremes of a continuum. Government of like Sri Lanka, India, USA are the moderates. And it makes a normal distribution (generally only a very few human rights activists and terrorists, but most are moderates). A good point for someone to write an article on, I think.
no one to answer my question?? :-((

Thoughtful guy,
Usually, a division is the unit that can do operations independently. So it would consist of all the brigades ect. that are needed to do an operation. Though 57 is the largest division for Sri Lanka, in other larger nations a division is much larger. Several divisions would make up a corp. Hope this helps.
I mean corps.
Thanks Apino, did you notice the quality of the footage? Must be one of the newer UAVs that we got from the friendly nation ;)
Thanks Rover......... so I m assuming the 57th has all types of briagdes under it... SF/Arti/Medi/Armour etc etc....
yes sir.

The undoubted military leader of our times has been none other than V Prabakaran. Irrespective of our dislike of the person, his military and strategic acumen has been unsurpassed by anyone else we've seen so far. To understand my point of view you need to objectively understand that he had what it took to reach the position of absolute dictator to start with, and could motivate thousands of young men and women to sacrifice their lives to fight his war, albeit mindlessly.
The battles SL lost were caused by a combination of his military ability and strategic ability to marshall all resources including forign sympathizers to demotivate and pressurize SLG to fight less than 'total war' which he conducted against us. Being able to tie a powerful opponent's hands is also a part of extreme cleverness, and he had mastered it all.
Then he killed Gandhi, but could have managed to scrape thru with it with difficulty.
Then the unimaginable happened on 9/11/2001 and brought the LTTE into sharp focus of the FBI.
As history repeats itself, almsot all major terror organizations have done well and carved a name for themselves until they hit the FBI's radar. The Mafia, Red Brigades, Baader Meinhof, Luminoso Sendero (Shining Path in Peru) and Russian Mafia are just a few of those who seriously suffered as a result.
If not for these events, SLG could still very well be under the spell; unable to fight back and bleeding while the LTTE would have reached an unbeatable force level by now.
With brilliance must come humility. Those illiterate who succeed thru sheer intellect fail at their peak due to the lack of the finer capability to be humble enough to listen to others, the eternal story of the Smart Ass.

not wanting to put a dampner on things, but dont these look like the target was missed? building probably damaged due to expolision, but cant call it a direct hit - survivable is what i think im trying to say.
sorry Apino, didnt see your post :(
tt
The proximity of the blast is quite enough. This was a building of 4 floors, I believe and such an attack on 2 sides would serioulsy compromise it structurally and any thing buried underground such as a bunker could easily have collapsed.
A follow on strike would have been nice, just to make sure things stay dead. I also expected a bunker-buster type strike than a surface weapon on this place.
Looking forward to some clearer images and clarifications on what happened in this place.
cheers for the input tropicalstorm, always appreciated.
tt,
I believe SLAF got the real target. LTTE is always keep the key locations little bit away from what we can see from the air as the real target (land marks). Best example is SLAF bombed on LTTE fuel storage.
Greatest military minds would win the war for their people. But likes of Prabhakaran and Hitlar are examples of excellent sickos who made nothing but the death and distruction fall upon their people. I see nothing great in them. Their success up to a certain point might be due to a random luck of a gambler who wins a million starting from a twenty dollar bill. Both can be idiots (the gambler and the sicko) whose success purely depend on polarized randomness. The both may not know where to stop and the gambler would loose everything in the next bet and in Prabha's case we will definitely see the outcome soon.
lol according to The New York Times' Somini Sengupta, the LTTE now has 'fighter jets'.
http://tinyurl.com/3f98uo
Guys looks like SOMINI SENGUPTA had done a "Athas" in calling the tin cans "bomber jets" ....
La ti da ti da....
God Bless Newyork Times if this is the quality of their writers....

Well said.
But I disagree about polarised luck when it comes to P. His success is partly due to our faults. Not recognising and accepting genuine grievances of Tamils made him their hero. We should have addressed these issues before they became problems. P monopolised on these and of course he used the Tamil youth to create him empire.
As you say because he has a sick mind. He has not been able to draw the line and use his power for the good of the Tamils even after the Singhalese politicians and masses have recognised the problems faced by the Tamils. This makes him similar to the gambler were he bets on every thing he has with out being satisfied with what he has.
At some point in the past if only P agreed to negotiate the Tamils would have achieved much more in terms of social stability and recognition. This would have allowed Sri Lanka to flourish. Singhalese, Tamils as well as Muslims would have been able to enjoy the benefits of peace.
We should look forward to end of this dark period of our history and to a new start.
Dear Bro Rover,
Gald to be of service....actually when I posted the link, I had no time to see it for myself ( had to rush out for a game of badminton...its holidays here)
Just saw the thing....Indeed the quality is very much better compared to the previous footage. Like you said, may be we have better optics now...
I only hope SLAF has optics with thermal imaging too...Putty Tatts, their power generators, any metallic object dissipating heat (absorbed during daytime), any vehicle in use will standout like glow-worms.....in the night.
The other day I was watching the BBC DVD series called Planet Earth: they have obtained fantastic wildlife images using new camera system which was original developed for the military.
This Heli-Gimbal camera system mounted on a Jetranger ( I think)copter, had allowed them to hover about 1km away from the target and take HD quality close vids of wild life. Said to be first such attempt ever by commercial TV.
Quality & detail is unbelievable...
I was going to suggest that SLAF obtain such HD camera system and mount it on a Jetranger. Since its gyro-stabilized, they can obtained clear crisp imagery which later can be analyzed for telltale signs of PuttyTatt activity, hidden targets etc.
With the right electronics, they can even give a live feed to the ground commanders ( any bureaucratic middleman should be bypassed) which can direct arti etc based on real-time footage.
I guess 1 km is more than enough to put the copter out of reach of the PuttyTatt AA fire.

[Fri, 03 Oct 2008, 04:58 GMT]
Sri Lanka Air Force Kfir bombers attacked the Headquarters complex of the Tamileelam Police, located along the A9 Road at the heart of Ki'linochchi town Friday around 9:30 a.m. Three bunker-busting bombs hit the premises of the Tamileelam Police, destroying a hall behind the Police HQ.The main building escaped destruction as Ratha Anti-Aircraft Unit of the Liberation Tigers of Tamileealm (LTTE) fired at the bombers. Two of the bombs hit the nearby store of the Tamils Rehabilitation Orgsniation (TRO) causing damage to it. The attack comes after continuous barrage of artillery and Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) fire from 7:00 p.m. on Thursday to 4:30 a.m. on Friday, targeting the destruction of the township. With the relevancy of the DPU, they are highly relevant, after the fall of the LTTE, they are the troops that can infiltrate and get rid of the remaining units, with jungle fighting its a different war fare, the reason I heard that we had trouble doing it before as the terrain was rather new, and we used to be strong unto a point, where afterward we couldn't due to lack of not knowing the terrain, the main reason a soldier highlighted was they didn't know where to get water in this area, the water in this area is found in small springs, which only the tigers with their knowledge of the landscape comes.
With the new division I beleive that some one should put them on the east of the A9, between TF2 and the 59th, as that is where very little movement once the FDL in that area comes further up the chances of a failure are close to zero..
as there is an empty hull in that area, which if filled will b a thorn on the sde, aswell as I should comment that now the navy needs to also focus on the eastern waters, to prevent the infiltration attempts.Prevention as they say is always better that treatment.
HOT HOT NEWS...
TODAY RATHA DEEP PENETRATION UNITS PENETRATED INTO THALIVAR'S ASS ACCIDENTLY...WITHOUT OXYGEN THEY ALL GOT KILLED.
Tcup Storm,
I like your posting but cannot agree that VP is a militery genius.
Gen. Patton sai something like this long ago:
No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.
That is exactly what VP did for peelaam.
Garath40K,
I agree. I have always said between Omanthai and Nedukeni no guard. It is easy to infilterate and crate havoc in east.
However, division 57 is not going to be there b'cause TF2 and 56 will be inbetwen.
57 is fully stretched and require additional platoons to guard their back as well as relieving tired troops time to time.
Rana
Very true, but the only way the 57th would be struck would be if the enemy comes from the east end of the A9, as the void as you also agree with exists as well as less presence from the 57th should be in already captured areas, to fill in should come the STF and other non battle units, few units should stay back, but the spear head of the military action should spear on ahead instead of getting bogged down with being the guarding and resettling bit, there is where we need to fix things, and it is time up TF2 and 56th brought there lines to bridge the void between the 59th and 57th, them being back there is not at all helpful.
Apino,
"The windows of Vanni Institute of Technology (VanniTech), a high-tech educational institute founded and fu\ nded by a Tamils association in the Silicon Valley in the USA, shattered by the air strike"
VERY INTERESTING piece of info there if true..
Exactly what our people have to do in future..but for ALL the peoples of SLanka.Lets follow their lead..It is not only that.. i suspect that they have also created a "Fund" to educate certain people in this institute at "prestigious" universities overseas..Lets follow their lead..
Can anyone update me the army, navy,AF rank hierarchies + In SL how the Division, battalion etc…. forms and how many troops per each unit…
King Dhutugamunu and 10 Giants have re-born and active in Sri Lanka. Don Juwan Wickramasinghe's time is over..
SRI Lankan...
Idea is good......and if some one launches it there will be a massive support too...but as all things are here in SL, once the people who run this fund/institute get the money in their heads, there will be courruption and nothing else...
Again I say
The 4 northern units if they were let loose would make a major upset, once these come out a major part of the Killinochchi and North East can be neutralized, but then when that eventually happens, as I feel very soon the purpose of the Mig29's will come, then we need some one to secure things from the eastern end of the A9,so that theres no way in and no way out for the tigers.
Dear Srilankan,
Good idea....It has to be very very true as it was reported by TamilNut.
Yes, We Sri Lankans should think in similar terms.....credit should be given where its due and this is good initiative.....
Some others too are doing similar things in Sri Lanka under our very noses...since I don't want to sound racist...I will not venture further.
Time to think Sri Lankan

Gareth49k,
exactly bro, this what I always say. I can't understand the logic of keeping east of A9 vulnerable. Why we can't make a straight FDL from Mankulam to Mulative or atleast from Puliyankulam to Nayaru.
I think your wave length is similar to mine mate.
Hemantha/Gareth4k
I stand to be corrected but I think it is the LTTE terrorists that have a DPU. The corresponding unit in the SLA is called the LRRP. I know its just a question of semantics but if you relate to somebody (not from Sri Lanka) that the Sri Lanka Army have a Deep Penetration Unit, they will probably not understand their function. The name Long Range Reconnaisance Patrol aptly fits the role played by these saviours of Sri Lanka - so please let's just call them LRRP.
A named like DPU could have only be coined by the 'smarter' ethnic Sri Lankans.
Theruwan Saranai to our Forces.
"Can anyone update me the army, navy,AF rank hierarchies + In SL how the Division, battalion etc…. forms and how many troops per each unit…"
There is no strict rule. It varies for different armies. SLA is largely based on the British model. The following might be useful.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_organization#Hierarchy_of_modern_armies
In the SLA, an infantry battalion has 5 companies of 4 platoons each I think. Usually a platoon has about 30 troops.
So a battalion has 30x4x5 = 600, on average. A brigade consists of several battalions, infantry+support arms.
DW/others can correct me if I'm wrong.
Apino-
In the same TamilNut report they also say....

You mean the Tamilnut's internet center gone to ashes !!!... Now they have to call outside Sri Lanka to upload some Bull S***.
Hi OneSpirit
With regard to Long Range Recon, please read the deffinition of recon on google as follows.
Reconnaissance (also scouting) is military and the medical term denoting exploration conducted to gain information. ...
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reconnaisance
Our units do not I repeat just scout or explore, they do under cover operations, they actually take out the leaders after recon, so I do have a contradictin with that wording.

Making Water From Thin Air
Audrey Hudson Email 10.06.06
A company that developed technology capable of creating water out of thin air nearly anywhere in the world is now under contract to nourish U.S. soldiers serving in Iraq.
The water-harvesting technology was originally the brainchild of the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which sought ways to ensure sustainable water supplies for U.S. combat troops deployed in arid regions like Iraq.
"The program focused on creating water from the atmosphere using low-energy systems that could reduce the overall logistics burden for deployed forces and provide potable water within the reach of the war fighter any place, any time," said Darpa spokeswoman Jan Walker.
To achieve this end, Darpa gave millions to research companies like LexCarb and Sciperio to create a contraption that could capture water in the Mesopotamian desert.
But it was another company, Aqua Sciences, that developed a product on its own and was first to put a product on the market that can operate in harsh climates.
"People have been trying to figure out how to do this for years, and we just came out of left field in response to Darpa," said Abe Sher, chief executive officer of Aqua Sciences. "The atmosphere is a river full of water, even in the desert. It won't work absolutely everywhere, but it works virtually everywhere."

The conversation with this soldier took place when I was in hospital for dengue,on the left side was this soldier, same illness, so out of pure interest I questioned him regarding the battle, he says the army used to chase the cadres deep into the dense jungle, but after going in they had to turn round and come back as they hadn't water, but the cadres knew where the under water springs lyed so they couldn't hold the positions once they got in..I hope the army has found a remedy for this, thats one reason I feel this time the 59th is not going at all guns this time, they will take there time and make sure this time they have backup water when hunting them down.
hmmmmm...I hope the SLAF is not doing a "Paalu Geyi Walang Bindinava", by attacking already deserted buildings....

SCENARIOS-Where does Sri Lanka's war go if rebel capital falls?
Fri Oct 3, 2008 4:42pm IST Email | Print | Share | Single Page [-] Text [+]
By C. Bryson Hull
COLOMBO, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Sri Lankan soldiers on Friday were within 3.5 km (2 miles) of Kilinochchi, the headquarters town of the Tamil Tiger separatist rebels they have fought since 1983 in one of Asia's longest-running wars.
Here are some possible scenarios for what happens if the army takes Kilinochchi, a symbolic target:
MORALE, MARKET BOOST: Taking Kilinochchi would by no means mean an end to the war, but it would be a major political boost to President Mahinda Rajapaksa's government and also to the armed forces' morale. Most financial analysts expect a very short-term rally on the Colombo Stock Exchange .CSE. But it has generally moved on its own fundamentals since the war has been running so long and players are used to it. The rupee currency is unlikely to be affected, since the Central Bank routinely intervenes to prevent any rapid movement.
TIGER CENTRE SHIFTS EAST: If the army occupies the town, it will force the Tigers into hiding in the jungle -- to which they are very accustomed. It will also mean any Tiger administrative offices not destroyed in airstrikes will likely be forced to shift east to the rebel-held port of Mullaitivu. But soldiers are moving toward Mullaitivu from the south, and fighting there has been heavy in recent weeks.
ARMY MOVES DOWN FROM JAFFNA: If the army holds Kilinochchi, it will control all but about 40 km (25 miles) of the A9 road, the main north-south highway that goes through the narrow neck of the Jaffna Peninsula, the northernmost part of Sri Lanka. The army has been garrisoned there since 1995, but the Tigers are dug in across a short no-man's-land on the neck. It is heavily mined and Tiger artillery batteries there and southwest across the water at Pooneryn have inflicted heavy casualties on advancing troops. Should the army punch through the western port of Nachikuddah, where some of the bloodiest fighting of the last month has gone on, it would aim to hit Pooneryn and neutralise the artillery. Doing that would free troops in Jaffna to begin fighting their way down to squeeze the Tigers from two sides.
COUNTERATTACK: The Tigers could do what they have done after losing territory in the late 1980s and early 1990s, which is regroup in the jungles, then drive the army back while inflicting heavy casualties. But security analysts say there are several reasons that is less likely now. First, the army has grown to more than three times its size then, and gone from being a largely symbolic unit to a battle-hardened corps. Second, the military has improved its weaponry and adopted small-unit commando tactics that have proved an effective counter-insurgency strategy. Third, the rebels have been hit hard by the application of anti-terrorism financing laws around the world and interceptions of weapons shipments at sea by the Sri Lankan navy, with Indian assistance.
COLOMBO ATTACKS SPIKE: If the Tigers feel cornered in the conventional war, many analysts fear an increase in bomb blasts in the capital Colombo, more than 300 km to the southwest of the war zone. There have been six in the city since Aug. 30, when a bomb exploded in a market and injured 45 people. It was the worst of the series, but earlier bombs have killed hundreds over the years. However, the city is under heavy security and the government has no compunction about carrying out heavy-handed sweeps of Tamil areas to avert future attacks. (Editing by Jerry Norton)

Our LRRP guys need to travel light and hope they have got a solution for the water problem.
If you have seen the Discovery series "Man Agains Wild" hosted by Bear Grylls (Ex-Special Air Service, a special forces unit of the British army), he comes with fantastic solutions for dehydration problems in survival situations...some are bit extreme...but others are down right simple and common sense.
There are some plant species found in the wild which are good source for water.

CHENNAI: The AIADMK today pulled out of the one-day fast organised by the CPI to protest India’s military support to Sri Lanka, triggering speculation of a possible BJP-AIADMK alliance for the next elections.
The boycott the AIADMK had committed its support to the statewide agitation and party general secretary J Jayalalithaa had nominated organising secretary S Muthusamy to represent her at the fast in front of the State Guest House in Chennai has also raised doubts over the AIADMK being part of the third front that is emerging in the state’s political horizon.<<<<<<<<

ltte top brass never mingle with civillians anyway. how often do u see even staged pics of pottu or the fat man with civillians? ltte has created an environment where suffering civillians have nothing to lose. that is how they get people for suicide missions. but that also means an unhappy man/women might strangle the crap out their sole rep given the chance. if you look at sat pics all high profile ltte locations strictly off limits to civillians, with barbed wire fences, surroundings heavily mined. so slaf has every reason to pound the crap out of all ltte buildings.
civilian shield is more useful for ltte to deter artillery attacks from sla and launch their own artillery from relative safety.

They have nothing to show for the millions they poured into the Tamil war chest. Their money is useful still but only to construct more graveyards. The LTTE too has nowhere to go except into more graveyards. The tragedy facing the Tamils is that after fighting for 30-odd years we have nothing to show except graveyards. Our people have no proper food, clothing, shelter or water. Our people driven from place to place have no rest. No security. Nor the basic freedoms to live with dignity.".........:-( :-(

Exactly.
However... if not for the difficult, bitter but downright WISE decisions (despite the insults, lies and fabricated accusations) of the present leadership AND the supreme sacrifices made and are being made by our brave, world-class troops...
...the vultures called Tamil Diaspora aka LTTE shareholders... would have been still boasting of the might of the LTTE...
Thanks and appreciation should also go to the Sri Lankans everywhere who went through and going through... immense hardship due to LTTE's phony cause...
But...more needs to be done... specifically last LTTE pig has to dragged out... and fittingly Eelamized.
hmmmmmm......blackpanther... thats what I was also thinking..... lets be logical and be thoughtfull.... if I were the LTTE and my enemy had total air superiority with supersonic-bombers... then will I live or command my loyal bunch of suicide bombers or have meetings with my fellow commanders in multistory buildings in the plain sight of the UAVs in plain daylight???.. NOT AT ALL ... I will mostly not try to go out my bunker, or if I have to, then go out at night , or if I have to go out in the day time, I will either meet the others in a well hidden place with lots of tree cover..not in a building or a suspicious looking hut in the middle of the jungle........

Dear Frakster
not to contradict you, the new ones are the Mig-29s, while yes they are fast, even the Mig-27s are so, the LTTE does have little time to react when it comes, but personally I did some research and feel that SU27's are better.
Apino bro,
I would say yes and with better night capability.
Fantastis isn,t it????? They will have red tears flowing.
cheers bros.
gareth,
SLAF got its Mig 29s.You are right SUs are better than Migs.Bigger and better Avionics.
But costly. When you compare a Land cruiser and a Lexus.
Hmmmmmm.Mig 29s are more than enough for us.
Yeah your right
Anyway the SLAF bought the Mig29s's, which are capable of carrying out a dog fight aswell as have the capability of bombing land targets aswell, better than the existing once on performance, no just the wiki article was a bit goofy with the performance, but the tale on indian airforce is a success, more like it

Dear Saman K,
Thanks once again.....fantastic indeed.
I hope SLAF guys are putting this in to good use.
For instance under thermal imaging any cooking fire, exhaust from generators should contrast against the cooler foliage cover during night time.
All depends on how powerful the optics being used. I have seen some systems which can even detect the heated barrel of a gun.
Systematic grid based scanning should eventually give away PuttyTatts burrows.....will need lot of patience.
Good hunting to our Bros @ SLAF

She was born and grew up in Wimbledon, a suburb in the southwestern part of London, and attended Wimbledon High School.[5] Her original surname was Karunakaran, but she shortened it to Karan as she believes the latter name suits her as an actress.[6]<<<<<

Thoughtful Guy,
lets finish off the LTTE militaryly at least and we will think about this later.I know exactly what you mean..exactly what you mean..If you dont believe me let me put it this way i know fellows(sinhalese)in colombo who have been making millions..due to an "education" monopoly...For some people in colombo.this war never exists..
Apino,
Let us finish this shitty war first bro..we will take it from there..
Then we can concentrate on education in style for ALL our peoples in SLanka.Right now for those of you who live overseas..if you meet our students overseas.. it may be an idea to help them as best as you can in order to guide them towards better results and with other problems since coming overseas to study is a completely different "kettle of fish".We are not doing this for gratitude or to get into their underwear..god willing they will remember us sometime in their lives hopefully. We have to look at the positive side of things..and not go back to the "style" of 1948.
Hey Apino
I think we Nuked them out of here Buddy! he he
thoughtful guy,
good point; was thinking along same lines.
i used to frequently use that phrase too!
but there is a difference in this instance. as we discussed b4, LTTE has its non-military infrastructure in and around kili. these MUST be made unusable. it also has a "fear-factor" to chase away tigers away from kili. chase-away is not a good strategy (only harvesting works) but SLA has a target to capture.
SLAF air raids also clearly show a SLIGHT deviation from the targets when the bombs hit. thereafter repeated attacks to BLAST the targets were NOT MADE. TN's photos DON'T show complete destruction of some targets; instead they simply look unusable.
the case of a tiger warehouse/storage is different. that may have damaged COMPLETELY and that is how it should be.
riyaz,
good suggestion. there is NO reason why anybody should get offended.
Dear Apino,
/*
a saying from my youth comes to my mind.....
"Hena Gahapang...Ganang Balapan"
*/
so does "kana palenna gahanawa" which my parents used to say often. :)
"On Thursday, the Air Force bombed the LTTE Headquarters in Kilinochchi. Whether any LTTE leaders perished in that raid, one may not know. The significance of that attack, in our book, is more political than military."

I got to know that Praba is talking to some computer genius, you know why?? he is looking for a reset button, to reset everything and start over..
hemantha,
thanks for the link. that's my point. PLUS the editorial contains some INTERSTING stuff about "national politics" as well.
Apino,
That was a cool picture. Man, you made my day. Can you help me to identify the following names:
1)Sampa
2)Damitha
3)Gorilla
4)Jane
By the way, Mano is Mano G?
Apino
Cool. Keep them coming.
Hi Folks,
SLAF attacke are based on "real time ground info", let us say accracy of the info is around 30% and engaging the intended target accurately is 70% with obtaining dsirable results is around 28%.
Therefore successful ratio is arount 1:3 or 4. We may have some good results by now. "Silence of the lambs" in Canada may be telling us something.
$1000 question is Why FF is silent? or who SLAF got this time? anticipation is killing me here.
Good Morning Bro True Sri Lankan
Thanks for the nice links. It was good reading them early in the morning.
Cheers
Apino
Dear Sam,
1)Sampa-- TNA MP Mr. R. Sampanthan
2)Damitha--Dumeetha Luthra of BBC ( actually I wanted to put Buerk monky, but could not get hold of pic)
3)Gorilla--Mervin Silva from swaps of Dehiwala...hope you know him
4)Jane--Louise Arbour, the United Nations ...
Bro Srilankan
Agree with your comment on Education and helping our students.

Tissa Ravindra of Rivira mentions that there will be a new offensive division Task Force 3 in addition to recently inducted 574 brigade.
Click here to read the article
My two cents is that it would be eauqally good to strengthen TF-1 to a level of a full scale division, by considering the tasks ahead of them. (Eg. Capturing Pooneryn etc and establishing defences in the vast captured area )
DW
Any news/ideas on this would be highly appreciated..
Rana,
FF ain't join me..
Apino,
Man, my ribs are aching so hard now. Please, no more of this kind of pictures till I am fully recovered. Keep up cool wok.
Sam
Where are these key board heros..
Are they joining here all the way from Kilinochchi..?? and got killed yesterday..??
Can't be.. becos FF has to be somewhere from CANADA or US.. I kept on his duty hours, he work in US hours..
Hey Sam,
what is that Apino's picture you talked this much.. give me the link..
history,
Here we go
Yes. we are terrorists. It tells why this war is going on. We have to know what has happened there. Unless we couldnt relaise the problems we will accuse each other.
A terrorist story
v4victory,
What you are really trying to say??
Are you pro LTTE and trying to say that they are not a terrorist out fit??
Or
Are you trying to say that some white chick made a good clip for the payment you gave..
What, what is your point??
Finally the long waited silence is broken, common guys, get ready, there is a one here now.....
What is happening, just got a one. Yes, I told him that clip is a nice art work.. but he went away.. I cannot bare this anymore.
Where is my friend FF??
Sam,,
Thanks for the link..
There, the Satellite is the one I like the most..
Hello history
I dont like the way the tigers go in which people die in both side. However there is a justification for their goal but the way is not correct.
Here some said that in the war is anything fair. I wont accept that.
What I'd like to sy that we, sinhalese and tamils, need to find the way where everyone can live peacefully.
At the end of the day, sri lanka is divided or not, we have to live together. Otherwise, always looklike pakistan and India.
What is the wayout?
Dear Rana:
"Therefore successful ratio is arount 1:3 or 4. We may have some good results by now. "Silence of the lambs" in Canada may be telling us something."
I was thinking the same thing man
Apino and History,
I am still laughing here. I like the satelite and Amdon pair together.
Has the thrust for Pooneryn stopped?
According to "Rivira" the new division 'Task Force 3' would join K'nochchi front by next week (with 57 and 58 divisions). Earlier I assumed that it would be deployed between 56 and 59 divisions. I was proven wrong.
Considering the recent advances made by 57 and 58, I think LTTE will withdraw from Nachchikuda within a week or so. (Again I may be wrong).
underground process against Army General SF . this what exactly LTTE wants . this stupid news saying foriegn news correspondents asking question abt one of statement abt sri lankan army general said.
so why these foriegn correspondents so concern abt sri lanka .what they do abt this sri lankan news .. is it for marketing ..will they sell sri lankan news ???
they all LTTE paid correspondents .
http://www.lankaenews.com/English/news.php?id=6476
i dnt knw why our people this much stupid to publish those unwanted things.
V4victory,
"{What I'd like to sy that we, sinhalese and tamils, need to find the way where everyone can live peacefully. What I'd like to sy that we, sinhalese and tamils, need to find the way where everyone can live peacefully."
Are you really blind? You don’t have to find a way, that already exists in Sri Lanka; Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims & Burghers are living in harmony & peacefully in non-LTTE dominated areas in the south. For your information more than 56% of the Tamil population in SL are living happily with Sinhalese, Muslims and Burghers. The only obstacle is the LTTE, so the only way is to eradicate LTTE barbarians from this world to create peace.
"Here some said that in the war is anything fair. I wont accept that."
Whether you accept it or not, there are no wars won by fighting fair & square in this world.
"What is the wayout?"
There’s way out, please take off the RED glasses and then you will see the world is not red. In other words, try to see the roses outside your window instead of dreaming of a magical rose garden over the horizon.
I know sum will contradict me
But the statement put forward for war by Blair was.
"The willingness for peace, is the readiness for war"
This is what I feel as well, if theres someone threatening the territorial integrity of my country,if dialogs do not work,if I have done everything thats possible to protect it and the only option to save my country is war, then I have to go for war.
All Eelamists
A must read, this is how much the Sri Lankan government and the Sri Lankan people love Sri Lankans,

MoratuSaman,
hellow mate, I think we got at least one, it may be Nadeson, pottu or the big fat arse himself. I don't know who! All signs of Tamilnut and Die-A$$- por's silence is telling me something is wrong there.
Well I hpe for the best!!
Task Force 3,
Hi Ho that is a good news~!
I don't like present FDL, it looks like a knicker of a hooker. I want them to start from west of A9, around Omanthai and conquer Vaginal lips and Pubic hair area of the Maduvadini bitch to make a straight line FDL from Mankulam to Nayaru, just to make sure east is safe.
Hellow Sam perera,
are you still angry with me bro?
Soory mate, I am not a guy to say everything is rosy or alright with this current regime just b'cause they are doing very well in the war front.
There are so many things happening in SL that I don't like.
Any way bro, you are a true sri lankan and that is good enough for me.
Afterall, what we all wants is our mother lands to be free and just b'cause I love SL so much.
