After holding the LTTE's 1st FDL for the last 3 days the SLA today officially declared it had taken control of the 1st Muhamalai and Kilali LTTE FDL. The SLA increased skirmished into the LTTE FDL for the last three to five days gaging and gradually working away at the LTTE's resistance until finally holding onto the newly captured 800m to 1km area by today morning.
Casualties to both sides are high with the SLA suffering around 300 casualties, including those killed and the walking wounded. Casualties to the LTTE could be less. The narrow corridor of terrain makes it difficult for either side to advance, but the objective of this latest venture into LTTE areas seems to be to force the Tigers concentrated defenses away from the 58 Division, which is now 6km west of Paranthan.

Multi-Pronged Offensives Help Troops Dominate More Land Swathes
VALIANT TROOPS of the 57 Division engaged a number of terrorist targets in the outskirts of KILINOCHCHI Sunday (23) during their daring offensives advancing towards the LTTE heartland.
The fighting erupted during Sunday (23) wee hours when the troops of 12 SLSR ( Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment) and 9 GR (Gajaba Regiment) launched a pre-dawn attack on terrorists in ADAMPAN, about 7.5 km west of KILINOCHCHI town centre. Terrorist concentrations in the area fell apart making them take to run for life. At the end of the five hour-long confrontations, 12 SLSR and 9 GR soldiers captured about 2 sq km patch earlier held by the terrorists.
Giving a different punch on the face, 3 GR troops in the meantime smashing terrorist strong points in PUDUMURIPPUKULAM area, west of KILINOCHCHI, fought a fierce battle using small arms and heavy weapons against the terrorists who withdrew towards further north. This round of fighting that commenced around 11.00 a.m. continued till about 1.00 p.m..
Meanwhile, 8 and 10 SLLI (Sri Lanka Light Infantry) troops advancing towards MURUKKANDY junction along the AKKARAYANKULAM road were also able to dominate a road stretch more than 1 km by Sunday (23) afternoon.
Similarly, troops of the 17 GW (Gamunu Watch), 12 GR and 8 SLSR operating under the Task Force 1, in offensives conducted during small hours Sunday (23), destroyed LTTE strong points built on the LTTE earth bund in the north of ADMAPAN.
Troops are consolidating those positions at the time this report was pasted.

i read your blog in one gasp. very intersting. thank you. you seem to know all the RIGHT terminology used in the trade!! some info you provide may be contested; i don't believe some. but overall i have to admit that it is very good.
i came to the following conclusions.
1. LTTE intel is VERY VERY labour intensive which directs us HOW TO HANDLE it.
2. much of its support services, co-ordination, planning takes place in LTTE controlled area. once this comes under SLDFs, LTTE intel wing will collapse.
3. although you seem to "say" the LTTE view that some operatives will not reveal "under any circumstances", i know this is BS. from my experience (not necessarily in SL), even the most uncooperative guys can be turned to VERY co-operative ones. one methos is the use of their family members. you know the rest. also getting info from females (given the opportunity to use the RIGHT methods) is easier than from males. the false myth about female black tigers being the most secretive is not true (you didn't state otherwise though).
access to family members, etc. depends on the area under SLDF control. when the whole island comes under their control, it will have a direct bearing on getting info from even the most difficult customers.
4. to attack a place, you don't need a complete model of that place. this is a time wasting exercise.
e.g. there is no need to design a replica of a t-55 to attack poonaryn and steal 2 t-55 tanks!!
5. LTTE uses "Segregation" tactics very well. but the weak side is it requires A LOT of individuals making the exposure risk HIGH. although one individual wouldn't know much, it provides a valuable lead as to the type of the attack, how many would be involved (roughly), where the attackers may be (roughly) and the time frames. this can lead to targeted "white van" operations which has been a remarkable success story in counter-terror warfare.
6. LTTE uses tamils in over 95% (a guess) of cases. the tamil community is fast shrinking due to migration. this will affect the potential candidates. it also helps counter-terror operators to target their efforts.
7. maintaining a general atmosphere of "hopelessness" of achieving an objective is the best way to tackle an insurgency group like the LTTE. this method is exactly different to how a communist insurgency group should be handled.
allowing political favours (including favourable political solutions for tamil elamists) will again spark hope of tamil elam even after the war is over. on the other hand if the post war situation creates a general atmosphere of "hopelessness" of achieving tamil elam, tamil people will be forced to either conform or migrate.

It is now several weeks for 57 battling in areas around Kokavil, Therumurikandi, Iranamadu and akkrayan with one week of fighting for 58 at west of Paranthan.
A slow progress and heavy tiger damages claimed by SLDF suggests several hundred of pussycat casualties with more than thousand MIA.
I wonder, how many fighters they got now?
Progress may be slow again due to newly built earth bund around the Kili but something is not exactly right with the info.
Several weeks ago, Daily Mirror claimed TF3 crossed A9 at Kokavil and their map indicated the area west to A9 at Kokavil up to Iranamadu tank south end as a cleared area. Pussycats must have recaptured the area because upto date defence maps are not showing it.
Now, after Mankulam take over, no news about the progress of TF3.
I have lot of unexplained puzzles on the activities from Omanthai to Kili along A9.
Anybody got a clear idea on the above? Imagination is killing me.

I think A9 is not under SLA and not under LTTE.

Few points:
1. I thought effecttively A9 road from Omanthai to Mankulam is ours and cats were withdrawn to Nedunkeni but defence maps still show TF2 is 2-3 km west of A9.
2. 57 has not moved to north along A9 at all according to the maps.
3. After clearing Akkarayan village 57 could have gone to Pooneryn-Paranthan road instead of Kili. I expected that becuase it will help 58 to clear laggon area much quicker.
Nothing happened as expected by 16th or 17 of this month.
If the area around Kili is heavily defended, why not try Mankulam axis. Cats cannot defend all fronts with equal vigour now!

1. Our guys apdate maps weekly or so. Even in that case I don't think they indicate exactly up to the boundary where SLA operates.
2. SLA strategy is to keep safe MSR root for Jaffna - A32. But still it is not 100% safe until EPS is falls as LTTE can target it by 130mm s. A9 covers A32 but A9remains open for LTTE attacks unti SLA clears few km s along east of A9 - not yet done.

One of the interesting developments in the 25 year old war with the LTTE is that some of the great western powers and our giant neigbour to the north put their bets on on both sides in this conflict. Military officials from Sri Lanka have had warm welcomes from their counterparts in UK, and USA.
According to the latest Situation Report, Maj Gen G. A. Chandrasiri and another high ranking army offical are presently visiting the Royal Military Academy of Sandhurst in Camberly, England. A few days ago, one of the largest and most senior military delegations from the SLA visited the USA on official invitation. As I write, they are back in Sri Lanka. Not sure how this will translate in terms of actual support but I believe there will be tangible benefits.

Weight lifting:
LTTE terrorists have been using forcibly recruited teenagers to move their heavy guns and equipment under the moon light for more than 25 year now. They must have best candidates for the weight lifting categories of 56kg and 62kg! I know mahen, peter and bahirav are champions of “clean and jerk”!
Long Jump:
Jumping from a trench to trench and from bunker to bunker tactically withdrawing for 25 years must have given enough training by now. These forcibly recruited teenagers must have learn the cons and pros about long jumping from their seniors only thing we have to teach them to make sure not to over step on the board.

I'm not that good bro, but among my expat friends I'm the best ( ooops here I go ) except for a teen who is the International school 2nd runner up or so ( still working on my stamina). Just to give you an idea of how good the locals are, the said teen was beaten by a 11 yo local boy who is being groomed for professional future. Local talent is really good.
I tend to watch the Asian chicks in-between games, seated at the right level, but level of course. Nice view when they pickup shuttles and bend forward to take drop shots. You may try this mate.( These Asians love hairy Sri Lankans too mate)

NEW DELHI - PRIME Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday said India was failing in its efforts to crush a Maoist rebellion plaguing vast swathes of the country.
Addressing a conference of senior police and security officials in New Delhi, Singh once again described the ultra-leftist insurgency as 'the most serious internal security threat' India was facing.
'It is evident that despite the efforts that have and are being made, the measures taken so far have not yielded desired results,' the premier was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India news agency.
'The inability of intelligence agencies and the police to obtain pinpointed and actionable intelligence and in time has enabled these outfits to carry out some high-profile attacks.'
Mr Singh was referring to audacious attacks by the revolutionaries this year including the slaughter in July of 21 elite police commandos in eastern Orissa state.
In March 2007, the rebels assassinated a federal MP and a few days later killed 55 policemen in twin attacks in eastern India.
The Maoist insurgency grew out of a peasant uprising in 1967 and rebels often target the overstretched and poorly trained security forces operating in the east of the country.
The rebels say they are fighting for the rights of neglected tribal people and landless farmers and that their ultimate goal is to capture India's cities and overthrow parliament.
The left-wing guerrillas are active in more than half of India's 29 states and the rebels use a heavily forested region in eastern Chhattisgarh state as their headquarters.
Mr Singh's government promised in July to create new, specialised commando units in the worst-hit states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa.
It has also pledged to create six jungle warfare and counter-insurgency schools.
At least 834 people were killed in Maoist-related violence nationwide last year.

Colombo, Nov 24 (PTI) Terming the Tamil Tigers as the world's "most innovative terror group," Sri Lankan government has claimed the outfit has developed "technologically superior suicide jacket," which it has sold to Middle Eastern suicide groups.
The defence ministry has also estimated that close to 400 LTTE male and female suicide bombers have lost their lives in various attacks since 1982.
"According to intelligence sources the suicide units of the LTTE cadres are the most innovative under the world's terror groups and have perfected a technologically superior suicide jacket with plastic explosives," an article on the defence ministry website said.
It said such jackets, which carry plastic explosives had been sold to suicide groups in West Asia, "probably for a price".
Quoting the LTTE local media sources in Kilinochchi, the article said from November 27, 1982 to November 20, 2008, 274 male suicide bombers and 104 female suicide bombers have died. PTI

In the past these included trade and security - at the time when India was in the Soviet bloc and Sri Lanka was courting the Americans
At the time Singapore was also envious of possible loss of trade position and covertly helped the separatist movement
Once we get rid of the LTTE these same interests will apply. Hence the need for a strong armed forces - in numbers and capability

i read somewhere today that taking Killi right now is a disadvantage politically, it can draw the attention of the likes of south india and others because it's the admin capital. there's no military advantage than a severe blow to the moral of cadres and diaspora - diaspora again is political.
best is to skirt around Killi and leave or take but don't announce

MBRL units should be at least 10 bcos we have about 40 RM-70s in the country.

If you can look at the hideouts/bunkers in areas we have already captured in google earth and see if there is a deviation from the rest of the landscape we might be able to locate such hideouts in areas still controlled by the ltte.

Our troops have also virtually surrounded the tiger heartland. So this kind of fighting is to be expected.

Media Center for National Security (MCNS) says that fierce fighting took place since 3 p.m. yesterday upto 7 a.m. today. LTTE has suffered heavy losses in this operation. Army too has suffered and a group of personnel have gone missing in action. An operation was launched this afternoon to look for them, said MCNS.
The operation precedes to the annual war hero felicitation speech that is scheduled on 26th of this month.''

I do not think this Mr Brown is Dulith Herath (the webmaster of LNP and the owner of Kapruka). This Mr Brown is a pretender, either pro Ponnaya (UNP) or pro Pig (ltte), I call them P&P collectively. If this is the real Brown, I don't see how he can attack the credibility of DW when "defence analysts" of LNP routinely cook up stories which even the Grimms Brothers would be proud of. There are valid reasons why we call them those names, I am not sure how long you have been a reader, but you only have to go back to the recent past to see how they insult us. When they refer to our country as "Sorry Lanka", "Shit Lanka", and kill and maim civilians both in the north and south routinely, we have no alternative to but to use filth back at them.
