A 30-man LTTE team that breached the 59 Division FDL launched a string of attack this morning killing 15 soldiers in the process. The team had landed in Security Forces dominated Mulaitivu from the Nanthikadal lagoon around 6 a.m. undetected by the Army.
The team launched attacks on an Army Bus, Tractor and two Tanks causing damage to the four vehicles. The team then called in artillery at the FDL and coordinated a strike at the 59 FDL breaching it for a period of time until the Special Forces and Commandos were called in to secure the area. 11 Tigers were also killed in the counter attack, which is still ongoing.
Meanwhile an LTTE plane made a landing around 1.5kms ahead of the 58 Division's FDL at Visuamadu North. A heavy barrage of MBRL fire was immediately directed to the area. No movement was observed from the area following the attack. The Plane had landed on a tar road, further confirming the Army's doubts that it was not always using the landing strips discovered in the area.
In another development, a group of Tiger explosives experts on a mission to blow up the Iranamadu Tank Bund were caught following a daring amphibious operation along with a large quantity of explosives. If the bund was blasted, it could have caused irreparable damage to the area and made the progress of the Army extremely difficult.

Anyway I have a question about Sethusamudram. I have heard many things about it but I am unclear what is was exactly intended for, and who benefits.
Sethu was originally touted by its supporters as a great strategic asset for India, enhancing both maritime security and commerce by creating a shortcut and bypassing Sri Lanka between the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. A pro-LTTE fellow had written along these lines.
Conversely, Sethu was seen in Sri Lanka in quite negative terms, as it would ruin the port industry in Colombo and potentially disrupt the ecosystem in the Palk Bay (one reason cited for the relatively less damage to western Sri Lanka from the tsunami was the Sethu bridge).
Therefore it was a bit surprising when Indian navy chief Adm. Suresh Mehta stated that large ships would not be able to use the Sethu canal, thus making the entire strategic value of the project irrelevant. It seems that Sethu would only be valuable for local (i.e. Tamil Nadu) commerce.

There is a small solution. The Sender will send an email with a small code in it (a 5 or more digit number or any phrase). Once the email is received from the intended party. The Intended Party should 'Challenge' the sender to reveal the Code in the mail on the public forum. Then the Sender should publish the Code. It allows you to identify the sender of the mail as the actual blogger. However, you should not use the same code twice, and you should ignore any mails coming with the code-word, once it was revealed on the open blog.
From your Blogger IDs, you would separate others from impersonators on the blog itself.
Nevertheless, in anonymous blogs, it says never reveal your true identity (if you think it is a good idea).
As an example, even a die-hard supporter of GOSL with years of Blogging history in this blog could actually be an LTTE as*hole pretending to be a patriot.

I have done what you recommend in the past, and will rigorously adopt the e-mail exchange identification procedure in the future as well.
The sole exception to the rule is when you have sufficient confidence over many years of blogging to recognize the "signature" of that individual, and have gone through an email ID process such as you advocate, and you want to work together on something that requires revealing who you really are.
Ideally, it would be good if we could establish a chain of trusted individuals who could meet people in person and vouch for them after checking against a list of criteria.

Similar thing was mentioned by ICRC spokesman too several days ago. Unfortunately publicity given by media for these is minimal. The SLG propaganda is mainly aimed at wining the incoming elections, but not to counter attack the claims by Pro-LTTP media. This is where we need the service form bors like ASthiri and Annda.

Tamils make up 12.6 percent of the country's 20 million population and have been caught up in the 37-year-old dirty war waged in their name by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Not all Tamils support the Tigers and there are half a dozen Tamil political parties militantly opposed to the Tigers, who are now boxed into a small area in the island's northeast after losing much of their territory.
Trader S. Kumaran blames politicians, military officials and hardline Buddhists for stirring up ethnic differences.
"Over the years they have said things publicly that give the idea that Tamils are terrorists, so therefore bad people... Their message is that we are not wanted," Kumaran said.
Wellawatte is still known for shops that sell Indian saris, traditional Jaffna sweets and affordable vegetarian food. Catchy Tamil and Hindi music blares from rows of shops, food outlets and communication booths.
The crowded tiny lanes are dotted with crowded apartment blocks and low-budget hotels which are popular among Tamils fleeing the fighting and seeking shelter in the capital before heading abroad.
But gone are the days when Tamils mingled freely, where women wore heavy gold jewellery and the distinctive "pottu," the red-dot on their foreheads which instantly identified them as a Tamil Hindu and is now rarely seen.
"We don't want trouble with the police, the army," said R. Selvarajah, who runs the low-budget Ideal Guest Inn. "If you write about us, take our pictures, they will detain us for weeks, sometimes for months," he said.
Some of the fears may be more perceived than real, but the Tamils are generally living on edge. Selvarajah feels there is an anti-Tamil sentiment despite the government's often-declared policy of national reconciliation.
Most Tamils here believe they are singled out and detained for longer at checkpoints, said Raja Letchchami, a woman who lives near the coast.
"I am waiting for a visa to Canada," Letchchami said, explaining that she had an elder brother who sought political asylum there five years ago.
"There is no freedom for us," she says with a shrug when asked what she felt ahead of Sri Lanka's 61st independence anniversary celebrations Wednesday.
"What is freedom when our houses are often checked and army people think we are Tigers?"
Opposition legislator Mano Ganeshan, who is also a Tamil, says the speed with which the military is gaining ground should be matched with political attempts to bring about a lasting peace.
"I see very high-speed activity in the war theatre, but no speed in the political theatre," Ganeshan said.
"Until a permanent solution is found, Tamils will feel vulnerable. At the moment, we feel like unwanted guests in this country."
For many years, the LTTE prohibited drinking, smoking and fraternizing with the opposite sex among their cadres. Now it seems, the fat man was imbibing in some premium quality spirits on the side. The recent photos of Parabhakarn's house shows an unopened bottle of CAMUS, French Cognac, in the refrigerator.

Anyway I have a question about Sethusamudram. I have heard many things about it but I am unclear what is was exactly intended for, and who benefits.....Is there anything else you can share on this topic?
Some general perspectives:
1. The Ram Setu project is one of may infrastructure projects that has gained momentum over the past decade. Indian Roads/ National highways is another example of the comparatively emphasis on infrastructure.
2. The project aims to link Indian east and west coasts by bypassing the current 'loop' that ships have to take around SL. There is a defence aspect to it as well, for Indian coastguard, Navy.
3. However, there are several objections to this project - maninly environmental (impact of a Tsunami), economic (is it worth it?), religious (The Ram bridge), technical (it is not feasible).
Plus the fact that people say that the b ridge is a man made formation - so it should be made a national monument, instead of our destroying it.
4. Typically big projects in India take years if not decades to implement. There's the usual inertia, litigation, clearances needed etc.
Whether the project will be implemented will be anyone's guess. At this stage, my sense is that it can go either way. Right now it is at a very early stage.

Please let me put my 2 cents in to this MIA interview. I think we should ignore it and it will die a natural death because she is cleverly using her minority and perhaps the refugee status to propergate her self as people in the Western world are gullible enough to fall for such stunts.
It was obvious to my non Sri Lankan friends who watched this interview to comment or realize as how on earth she could remember at the age of 6 the killings she witnessed. Yes, according to the photo this cannot be a M-16 range. M16 characteristically comes with a riffle grip angled almost 45 degrees towards buttstock (back) and the magazine is further in front of the grip.

5.0 is meant for anti aircraft action. It is mounted on most of the sea vessels of SLN. This is also see-to-air capability.
i guess you probably asking about missiles, right. It does on selected number of vessels.

Hell yes. Starting from small arms, to rockets and missiles, SLN has power for ground strike from see. They did have the capability for years.
SLN's primary job is to guard the see. Airforce and SLA has all the firepower to handle ground action. It's like you don't normally use bread knife to apply butter, although it can be done and will be done as the last resort.

who says cannot? SLN has exercised firepower from see to ground in many occasions in the history of this war. But now, SLA and SLAF has all the fire power to manage ground attacks.
It is just SLN was not required to attack ground recently.

here is how to counter her bull-shit generalised LTTE propaganda - always highlight that she was once banned from entering the USA because in one of her songs she was heard to be supporting terrorists. Ironically, the terrorists she was siding with were not the LTTE but the PLO. But this was enough for the US authorities to ban her from entering.
I thin this also goes to show the double-standards used by the west in defining terrorists. Like they say, one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, i suppose.
Anyhow, what i have noticed is she has toned down her pro-tiger rhetoric a lot since she signed on to a major American record label (Universal records, if i recall correctly) because she wouldn't want to be banned or face legal action in the future. In fact, i noticed in her recent TV interview that she was very careful not to come across as openly supporting the tigers but cleverly took the "genocide" route.
I've also noticed it's hard to find some of her old interviews with the British media like the Guardian and The Independent etc where she seemed quite happy to show her tiger stripes and milk her father and her family's past to sell her music. Of course, in the west they love a story like her's and find her exotic.
She is a very talented person but it's disgusting the way she is exploiting the Sri Lankan war by grossly generalising and twisting facts to sell her music. I hope the US authorities ban her again.

MULLAITTIVU: TIGER terrorists’ long list of bizarre network of underground bunkers, luxurious homes, storages, camp complexes, etc received a new dimension on Tuesday (3) morning when the troops uncovered a far-fetched colossal Torture Chamber cum an Open Prison of the LTTE in the west of VISUAMADU area, reminiscent of the yesteryear Nazi Era torture chambers, Auschwitz, the Jews death camp.
The entire LTTE Prison complex spreading over five acres in extent has been fenced with barbed wire rolls to a height of about 10 ft and includes tiny cells, made of concrete and cement with only thin openings for ventilation. All the metal doors to the chambers can be padlocked from the outside as the photos depict.
Bringing memories of age-old royal punishments (Dandukanda) meted out to traitors in our old kingdoms were a pair of metal handcuffs, found weilded to the ground with concrete, inside one of the dark Torture Chambers in the complex. (see photo)
The entire complex has been guarded through four turrets of about 30-40 ft from all four corners of the precincts. A huge canopy-type metal structure without any air openings appeared to be a heating chamber where LTTE traitors would have been confined to, from time to time, depending on the nature of their offence. Perhaps, it could have been heated using generators as a method of severe punishment thrust to those traitors by putting them into the chamber, the ground troops maintained.
